Grouping tracks or using a stereo bus - help needed?

Hi,
Situation:
I am mixing a 4 song EP with each song made up of around around 50 tracks.
Aim:
I want to be able to automate the level of groups of tracks across the mix. For example; I want to bring the drums (comprising about 6 tracks) as a submix up a few db for the Chorus.
I also want to be able to apply effects to a whole group, like say compression to the whole drum mix as well as to each track - e.g. a little comp on the snare.
Problem:
I can't figure out how to do this in STP. There doesn't seem to be a mechanism to group tracks together or to create a submix.
I have tried using a bus but this doesn't really work so well because the pan positions of each of my individual drum stracks are not preserved when they come through the bus. Using this approach I seem to need to set the pan on each send, effectively setting it twice (once in say the kick drum track and again in the send from the kick drum track to the drum submix bus). The problem being that if I change the pan for a particular instrument in the main track area, I would need to change it in the send pan which is buried away.
Have I missed something here or would I need to move across to Logic to get this kind of functionality.

Even if I had money to spend I would not use anything else to master with. STPro has it all. I've never understood people who mix at one studio and master at another. The two are so interrelated. STPro lets you mix (EQ tracks, set effects like delay, reverb, etc., and balance the volumes and pans of all the tracks in the mix) and then master (set the compression and limiting, adjust the spacial reverb, adjust the comparative volume of all the songs in a project) with the ability to go back and fix the mix and remaster quickly.
You are VERY wise to stick with engineers who know your kind of music. Having said that, I can tell you what I use for mastering, but I do singer/songwriter acoustic guitar, vocal and harmonica primarily. Not even close to an indie band.
Mastering plugins:
Compressor - I tried other compression plugins and settled on this one. I use it on individual tracks because it affects the mix so much and I have to put more compression on some tracks (harp) than on others. This is SO important. This keeps the subtleties of the recording from dropping out when your listener is driving and playing the CD in the car.
Space Designer - This reverb works best for me. It doesn't add blank time at the end of the song like some reverb plugins. This takes a huge amount of time to learn, so find someone who does rock and get their suggestions of which IR (impulse response or "space") to use. I use Music Club and Vocals-Short for my stuff. The key on this is the wet/dry setting which is mysteriously called "Output" on the far right side. You set "direct" to 0 and back off "reverb" to a range of -20 to -5 to go from dry to wet reverb sounds.
Limiter - This is probably the most important. This not only sets the top level to make sure everything put together doesn't clip, it lets you pull up the volume on the "out" track to bring the total sound to 0 Db for a hot sound file. This means your listener doesn't have to turn the knob up very far on their cheap system to get good level, thus there is less system hiss. It is the other part of compression. Both are needed to master.
Comparing Volumes in Waveform Editor - This is indispensable. There is no easy way to compare the volume levels of different songs in a CD project without a quick way to go back and forth. So after mastering each song, export the mix to an .aif file. Then open all the .aif files in the waveform editor. Now you can compare levels by clicking back and forth. For my music, I can also SEE the comparitive levels in the waveforms. (Indie rock may look pretty solid.)
Sharing Mastering Presets - This is possible now with Macs for both plugin settings and GB software instruments. IE I can actually send you the presets I like and tell you which folder to put them in on your Mac. (I wish I could quit my job and do this full time. A website where people could post and download presets and software instrument settings would save our music and film community so much time.)

    Is there an action for Automator, which will allow me to get a text file of what is located in folder and ALL of it's subfolders ONLY? Not the files within the folders... Just the tree structure?

    am trying to make a music video for a uni project, one of the things I'm trying to do in the video is to fade in a word at a time in whilst keeping them all aligned properly as a sentence - is there an easy way to do this?

  • Stereo bus format conversion

    Hi there - In transferring a logic song from a G5 Power Mac (2.5GHz dual) using a DVD and loading it into a MacBook Pro (2GHz Intel dual, when opening up the song, the following message appears: "0 stereo audio tracks and / or 2 stereo bus objects have been converted into a new format". The result is that previously assigned stereo bus send controls are now mono - it is not possible to select stereo bus sends on a track in the environment window whether it is mono or stereo - as well, the previously defined stereo bus object is also mono.
    Has anyone else experienced this problem - some help would be greatly appreciated.

    maybe the target system doesn't have "Universal Trackmode" enabled.
    To enable it choose "Audio->Audio hardware & drivers..." and tick the box.
    now open the song again.

  • Question about stereo vs. mono tracks. (Very basic, but appreciate help)

    I’m still a little confused about Stereo Vs. Mono tracks when recording in Logic. (This might sound stupid, but I’m still getting confused by this stuff.)
    When first recording a track, do you guys usually do it in mono or stereo?
    Secondly, I’m still confused about the benefits or stereo tracks. Why not just record mono and then pan a track left or right when mixing? I’m just not getting the concept of stereo recording. I know these are very basic questions, but I’ve read numerous books and I’m still a little in the dark on this. Thanks for the help!

    Most of the things I record are done on mono tracks. Each piece of a kit goes to its own channel, then I pan things accordingly later (Overhead L & R, etc.).
    You only need to record in stereo if you actually have a source that is stereo, i.e. a keyboard with stereo fx and L&R outputs, but even then I usually just set up two mono tracks, one for L and one for R. I would do a similar thing if I was using a stereo pair to mic something.
    You can always make a mono track stereo later as well using a variety of plug-ins.

  • Overnight my contact list went from 1492 contacts to 52.. With help from Apple support I retrieved all of my contacts.  Here is the problem, I lost the groups.  None of my contacts are sorted into groups as they used to be which is very important for me.

    Overnight my contact list went from 1492 to 52.  With help from Apple I retrieved the missing contacts using Time Machine.  The problems is that the contacts are not in groups as they used to be.  Any suggestions?  I really need them grouped for business reasons.
    Also, there are no longer pictures associated with each contact.
    thanks for any help anyone can give me getting contacts back into the groups that I had established.  By the way, the group names are still there, but they are all empty.

    No. You can do it if you have Find My iPhone installed/enabled on your iPhone though, but only if the phone is still turned on

    Unfortunately if you did not set up 'Find My iPhone', there is no way to remotely track or wipe the device.

  • Stereo bus not stereo?

    I use Logic to score animated shorts.  I'm working on one where all the action takes place in a warehouse, so I want to blanket all the sound effects in a little reverb.  My basic set up is:
    music tracks-> bus 1 -> stereo out
    fx tracks -> bus 2 -> stereo out
    (these are outputs not sends)
    My problem is once I run FX into that bus then suddenly everything is mono.  I have all kinds of automated pans going on as the action on screen takes place and if I set any individual track to the normal stereo out it works perfectly.  But putting them through the bus makes everything mono and I can't figure out why.  Bus is clearly labeled as stereo.  I assume there's a better way of doing this but it works really well for me to create all the music and send that through one bus and all the fx through another.  Any advice?

    Thanks for the quick responses!  I thought about the reverb throwing it off but here's a screenshot of a sound effect panned hard left, then going into the bus and coming out straight up the middle (notice the lines that show where the levels just were:  all left channel on the plunger track, totally even on the bus track):
    I've got dozens of tracks, some mono some stereo, some wavs and some virtual instruments all going through the same bus.  I'm not sure about how to set up tracks like you mentioned aside from making them mono or stereo and panning them.  For reference here's another shot of my mixer (there are a ton of tracks so here's just the end of it):

  • Stereo buses

    A colleague and I were discussing stereo buses and we've noted an oddity. We are both running 7.2.3, I have both Express and Pro on my machine, I'm not sure if he has both. When I am in the audio environment, select one of the buses and click "channel" I get fewer choices than he does. His include track stereo, aux stereo, and bus stereo. I don't see these options. We can't figure out the difference. Any ideas?

    This is one of Logic's many flaws in regards to signal flow of busses, Bus Objects, and Auxes. There are numerous posts on this topic that should be easy to find and research. In the meantime, in order to keep your respective panning on individual tracks when you bus, there are 2 options:
    1. bus to a stereo Bus Object
    2. if you need to bus to a stereo Aux Object, you will need to use the Direction Mixer Plug-in on each track to retain your desired panning.

    But this doesn't seem to solve my larger problem: I
    don't have control over the stereo send. That is, I
    can't pan the signal to a stereo bus. Worse, the
    "stereo" bus doesn't inheret the pan position of the
    track. That is, if I pan the instrument track hard
    left, then send it to bus 1-2 using an auxiliary, the
    signal is equal strength in bus 1-2. A design flaw?
    Any suggestions?

  • How to display grouped tracks tree-like?

    I imported lots of classical CDs and I grouped some works using the 'Grouping' field of the song information dialog. The grouping I added appears in the column 'Grouping' , but however, I'd like to have the groupings displayed in a tree-like structure. I know iTunes can do that, because I have seen it in the music store (on some classical CDs).
    Unfortunately, the help files and FAQs don't tell a lot about grouping.
    How can I enable the tree-like display of groupings in my library?
    FYI: I am using iTunes 6.0.1 on Mac OS X 10.0.3

    I'd like to have the groupings displayed in a tree-like structure. I know iTunes can do that, because I have seen it in the music store (on some classical CDs).
    Ohh! That would be Folder Structure then. A useful feature in other circumstances of running tracks together while in Party Shuffle or Shuffling a list. iTMS can obviously do it, but apparently not iTunes.

    Grouping seems another way of making a regular or smart playlist, but would not affect how those songs get displayed in viewing the library. The word "grouping" gives the impression of doing somethiing more I think.

    Previously I have had no issues simply using Adobe Audition 3 for simple stereo recording and editing of a stereo feed taken from a mixer... well nearly no issues....  :-)
    Today, I'm having a bad day or else it's because I'm getting used to being retired.. :-)  ......
    Query :    How do I put two mono tracks into the usual stereo view in Edit view so they both display correctly there?
    Put simply I have two mono wav files. Let's call them Left_wav and Right_wav.
    I cannot seem to get them imported into a new clean Edit view (Normal stereo track layout) so that Left_wav is on the top half and Right_wav is on the bottom half.
    Whenever I try, I just get either Left_wav or Right_wav taking up the whole of the edit view. i.e. it just shows one track.
    Can anyone familiar with Audition 3 kindly help? I'd appreciate a simple step by step... I just can't see where I've been going wrong, and it's driving me bananas :-).

    There are various ways to do this in Audition 3. here's one.
    Open both mono files separately in Edit view. Then convert Left_wav to Stereo by going to Edit/Convert Sample Type and under Channels select Stereo with Left Mix at 100% and Right Mix at 0%. This will give you a new stereo file with Left_wav on the top channel. Next go to the Right_wav and copy to the clipboard using Edit/Copy. Return to your new stereo file and enable Edit Right channel only in Edit/Edit Channel/Edit Right Channel. Then make sure that the cursor is at start of the stereo file and Paste Right_wav into the bottom channel of the new stereo file. Finally Save As.

    I purchased an M Audio Fast Track to use with Garageband.  I'm running OS 10.7.2 Lion.  The M Audio website says its compatible with Lion.  Both my vocals and guitar, bass only record in mono even though I've got the audio input set to stereo.  I set the input in GB Preferences for the M Audio DAW.  The Garageband software instruments record in stereo but they're not going through the DAW.  Am I doing something wrong?  BTW, I'm a beginner so...and help will be appreciated.
