Grouping TV Shows - ie TV Show Name Seasons Episodes

I am seeing in Apple TV under TV Shows:-
Stargate SG-1 - Season 1
Stargate SG-1 - Season 2
etc
The West Wing - Season 1
The West Wing - Season 2
etc
Is there anyway to get the TV Show to pull all the Seasons together and just show the TV Show, then the Seasons, then the episodes?
The way I am seeing it now with several TBs of TV shows this is going to be a very long scrolling list.
Any ideas? Can I group them somehow by changing an attribute in the meta data?
Thanks
Background just in case relevant
Just got a new Apple TV 2 - it connecting nicely to all the Macs in the house.
I am converting all my video and putting it into iTunes (10.0.1) using iFlicks (a tad flakey) and Elgato Turbo HD H.264 usb co-processor.
All going well, quicker if iFlicks were more stable and stop stalling without any indication it had done so.

For my test I had "Friends" and when I did the multiple item dialog and put a "1" in the season field it displays the season on the first level. So when I view by shows it has "Friends" with Season 1 in smaller font underneath. I just saw that and wanted to add it to my post
This is the way most people view their TV shows list. However, the original poster asked how to merge the various seasons for a single show together under a single TV show name--just the opposite of what you are doing (i.e., dividing the show by season). In my explanation, you select all episodes in all seasons for a single TV show, open the multi-file Info window and remove all of the season numbers in a single action. Thereafter, all episodes for that TV Show will then display under a single TV show name and, if the episode #s are correct, will be listed in their episode by season order but not place a "header" between seasons as is done on the TV1 menu when season IDs are included.
For me, it is six of one and a half dozen of the other. For instance, the original Doctor Who TV series has 26 seasons which would make 26 Doctor Who TV show entries in the TV show list making it easier to access individual episodes for each season. On the other hand, grouping all 26 seasons under a single TV show name makes it easier to select an individual TV show but makes it more difficult to access a single episode in the "season by episode" list which now contains over 500 individual episodes. Thus, each user must decide for himself/herself which work flow is more suited to their individual needs. My only reason for posting was to point out that both options are available for TV show lists and answers the OP's question.

  • Why is iTunes 7.6 no longer grouping TV shows by season / show?

I'm running iTunes 7.6 and have noticed that for the first time ever, purchased shows all within one season are now not grouped together.
This happens in "Cover Flow" view and in "Grouped with Artwork" view.
Some shows are unaffected. Others seem to be mainly stricken with the fact that iTunes is now thinking that the pilot episodes of some seasons are separate from the rest of the episodes within that season.

I had the same problem with a few shows, but was able to get around it. I selected the shows that should have been grouped together and hit Apple-I to bring up the Get Info window. In there, I put a checkmark in every field that would be universal for each show (artist, album artist, album, etc) and re-added the artwork for them.
Once that was done, they regrouped. Unfortunately, I need them grouped by show alone, now show and season. I have not found a way to group multiple seasons together.

  • Group TV Shows by name and multiple seasons?

I am looking for a way to group the TV Shows on my iPad by the Show name. So I am looking to organize my shows by the Show name. So let's say I have multiple seasons of South Park. Right now, it has an icon for Each Season of South Park. But is there a way to have A South Park icon, then when you click on it it will take you to all the icons for each season of South Park and the you click the season you want and then it takes to the show layout for that season. Possible?

OMG, I got it to work!  After posting here I did some more searching and found a similar post re Music Videos.  The answer there indicated that there have to be at least three episodes for the show to group.  I had been testing with just two episodes sync'ing.  I added one.  It still didn't work.  I read some more.  The answer had to be in the Info or Video settings.  The one field I hadn't put anything in was Artist. Since one of the posters mentioned in passing that his Artist field was populated correctly I decided that might be what I was missing.  After entering the show name in the Artist and Album Artist fields the grouping worked!
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to share their questions and answers.  Now I can keep my shows tidy.

  • TV shows.  Seasons not grouping together?

Hi guys!, have this really annoying problem, i have recorded all the episodes of "My Name Is Eeal", and marked them as TV Shows. But when they are in the TV Shows section, there are not all grouping together properly. The hole first season is fine, but season 3 & 4 are split op into to sections?
One with 3, and one with 13. The one with 13, are missing the episodes of the one with 3 in it:S
There all grouped the same, for eksample -S04E02/"Monkeys Take A Bath"/My Name Is Earl/Season 4/
So why arent they grouping together?
    Se pic´s below.

I don't have any tv shows but with music it is easy to have a space or a zero instead of the letter "O" which will make iTunes think your 3 tracks are a different season. Get info on a track and copy "Season 4" from one of the main group onto the "Season 4" of the grouping and see if it gets it back together again. I have even seen things that seemed identical but perhaps there was some subtle font difference and this pasting trick resolved the problem.

  • Make Messages app show names and pictures by default in groups

Is there any way to make the Messages app show names and pictures by default in groups? It's kind of annoying to have to set that every time. I'm hoping Yosemite may add this option.

    Hi,
    It should stay set.
    Should be this Menu item.
To get the options to be dark and usable then Messages window need to be "front".
The Buddy Names item above is for the name display in the Buddy Lists.
If it is not sticking then check that you have Read and Write Permissions to the com.apple.ichat.plist in ~/Library/Preferences.
Since Lion this Folder has been hidden.
Use the Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder and copy and past the ~/Library/Preferences
FInd the File then Right click it and chose Get Info.
In the info Panel, near the bottom, your shortname should appear with (me) next to it.
You should have Read and Write permissions.

    Grouping TV shows together
OK I've ripped my lost DVD to my apple TV now how do I get all episodes to appear in one folder or heading?

Your 'movies' will probably appear under movies even though they're TV Shows.
If the filenames are similar hopefully they'll be next to each other.
Right click on the first and choose Get Info.
In the Info tab enter the name to appear on screen.
Next click the Video Tab, and edit to TV Show from the dropdown, add Show name, and I tend to add season, and episode number/IDs though I'm not convinced it helps sorting on AppleTV. Clcik ok to update or Next if the files lie adjacent to each other so the next one is the next episode. Once you've done ok they'll move to TV Shows category and will appear under the Show name. I tend to label the episode names with a number myself, eg 01 - Intro, 02 - The Next Installment, 03 - Middle, 04 - Penultimate, 05 - The Finale.

  • Grouping TV Shows problem

My TV shows are not being grouped and put in folders even though I have the oganize media box checked. I also tried doing it manually and filling all the feilds but they still are all over the place as single entities. eg: TV show 1 season 1 ep 1 -16 do not show up in the same folder or group in iTune. so i wind up with a list a mile long in iTunes for individual episodes.
This is happening with TV i have not purchased through iTunes. They all play fine in iTunes and Apple TV but are just all over the place.
    Hope that made sense
    Any ideas?

Well this is weird... I've spent plenty of time on these forums explaining how to link things together - see http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp - but I didn't think it would be this hard to split things up if you wanted to. I've been trying to make some episodes from two different seasons of a TV Show appear as two separate entries in the iPhone's Video menu but they insist on linking up under the one cover. In iTunes they appear as distinct shows, *<Show> 1* and *<Show> 2* yet once on the iPhone they get all linked up under *<Show> 1*. I've tried various combinations of setting & clearing season numbers, using distinct show names and album titles yet I can't break them up, let alone get the Show > Season > Episode breakdown that you are after. I'm assuming that the iPhone cuts off the show name when it hits a number so I'm just testing *<Show> First Season* & *<Show> Second Season* to see if that works.

    Nope that doesn't work either...

  • Why do tv shows sort by season not the show then season 1,2,3 ect

Why do tv shows sort by season not the show then season 1,2,3 ect

I was able to get everything in one spot on the iPad....I went into Get Info and made Artist, Album Artist, Album, Grouping, Show, Sort Artist, Sort Album Artist, Sort Album and Sort Show the name of the show. Sure that was overkill....but one of those helped!
Now a few of my shows that were out of wack say "Season X" under the box art. How do I get rid of that?

  • My episodes from the same show and season are separated

In iTunes, I have several episodes from The Vampire Diaries, where if I look at them in the "Album List" view, they are separated, as you can see below.
Everything is the info is exactly the same, this has happened before, with misspellings, but now they are spelt exactly the same, and correctly, and yet they are still separated, I tried deleting them and re-inserting them, but it still separates them.
    Can anyone help? Thanks

Tips on grouping & sorting TV Shows...
Set the Media Kind to TV Show, give them a consistent Show name and also use this value in the Album field.
Set Artist & Album Artist to something like <Show> Cast in case iTunes/iPod starts treating them like an album instead of a TV show.
TV Shows can be subdivided into seasons by putting 1,2,3 etc. in the Season field of the Video tab of Get Info. Alternatively multiple seasons can be collapsed into one show by clearing such values.
TV Shows within a season/show are ordered alphabetically on the value of Episode ID. These are usually given in the form s##e## where ## is two digits with a leading zero if required.
I recommend using global episode numbers, so the first show of the second series of a show with 6 episodes in season one is episode 7 (s02e07). This makes it easy to set or clear the season numbers without affecting the order. I also recommend setting Disc No. to Season No. and Track No. to Episode No. as various builds of iOS/iTunes have it seems, at times, sorted on these other fields instead of Episode ID.

  • IPod Touch 64GB Model, (3.1.2), way to sort TV Shows by season?

Is there a way to sort the TV Shows by season after you go into the TV Show's name? As an example, on my iTouch I bought and got Futurama Seasons 1-5, when going to videos a huge list appears, but at the bottom the Show's name shows up, when I tap it, it brings up a list of all the episodes throughout Futurama, which is sorted by episode number, rather than season, then episode number. Is there a way to fix this, or will I have to wait for a future update for this to be fixed.

I'd love to see Apple bring back this feature. Apple vastly underestimates how many hours of video can fit in 64GB. With my encoding settings (which make use of the newer iPod's support for more advanced H.264 encoding settings, namely B-frames), I can fit about 250 hours of video on my iPod (if I got rid of my music and apps).
Hopefully Apple will do something about this. It's hard to find specific episodes when they don't sort by season. To make matters worse, because there's no Season grouping, the sorting order for episodes gets messed up. All episode 1's from the various seasons get put together, then the episode 2's, etc.
There are several other threads on these forums discussing this issue. I called Apple's tech support line, where I was assured that the issue would get fixed in future firmware. But, at the same time, it doesn't sound like the tech support guys really have a good way of communicating with the firmware developers, so I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, I recommend going to Apple's feedback at www.apple.com/feedback/ and asking them to bring back this feature.

  • Guide TV Show Names

Who progams the TV show names on the guide?  The DVR does not work correctly because of the wording on the guide.  For example MTV Real World, instead of it saying just Real World our guides say Real World "San diego" then "Chicago" or whatever city the show is in during that season, but now our DVR thinks it is a totally different show and will not record it.  Same thing happened with Party Down South our guides call the new cast Party Down South 2 so the DVR did not record the show.  I checked Direct TV, and Time Warner Guides and neither of them have this issue.  The shows say Real World and Party Down South.  This happens on other channels as well any time the guide gets too "detailed."

Like most things in life, it's marketing's fault and they most only care about their 'brand approval synergy' or somesuch drivel.
... and don't EVEN get me started on the latest nonense of slapping pop-ups or 'social content' into existing content and trying to pass them off as new episodes. i.e, Naked and Afraid becoming Naked and Afraid Pop-Up Edition, The Little Couple becoming The Little Couple Big Updates)

  • I purchased a season of a tv program. my library use to show how many episodes were in there. now nothing. when i click on the picture the episodes show up but with 2

My library in itunes use to show how many episodes of Eureka season 5 i have. Now there is no number in the top right picture of the TV show. When I click on the picture it shows what episodes are in there but it has 2 # 13's. How do I correct this if at all possible?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
    1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
    2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
    4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/ Library/ Caches...
    5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help: As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How can I group TV shows together??

    Hey guys,
I've got a bit of an annoyance. Is there any way I can group my TV shows together, by show.
So heres how I've got it now:
    http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/6848/itunestz.png
I want to have it so they aren't grouped by season, they are grouped by show. I'm envisioning sort of a "folder" which is named Doctor Who (for example), then you go into that and it shows you the seasons.
Anyone have any ideas for this?
    Thanks!!

ah ok. I tried this out, and while its not exactly what i want, it still works... just not how i want!! thanks anyway!!
Yep... best I can offer. Drop a line to iTunes Feedback to tell them how you'd like it to work.

  • Contact Groups are showing as "null"

On my iPhone5 and iPad some of my Contact Groups are showing as "null".  This is new.  It didn't start until yesterday.  iCloud.com does not reflect this.  Everythings seems to be okay there.  What can I do to change this?

I have this same issue.  Whenever I create a group via the iCloud web interface, it shows up named "null" on my iPhone and iPad.
I found a workaround, but it only applies to people who:
    - Are using a Windows PC
    - Have MS Outlook installed
    - Have iCloud control panel installed
    - Have iCloud control panel configured to sync contacts with Outlook
In Outlook, open Contacts, then from the ribbon choose "iCloud, Create New Group".
At least for me, this works...  Once created in Outlook, the group quickly syncs and shows up with the correct name on the iCloud web interface, iphone, and ipad.  After that, I can manage membership of the group either through the iCloud web interface or Outlook, and everything works as it should.
