Growing a tree

I know the people behind this commercial "   http://vimeo.com/7307911   " used xfrog and a couple of months to achieve this stunning result.
There's a lot of tools out there to render out full grown trees, BUT is i possible to make a naturally , growing tree in AE like the way the guys in the ad managed? ( VUE or Blender could be alternatives )
What comes to my mind is a model based upon a modified  "upside -down , inverted " ligthning-effect ,, or - any other suggestions here may be ??

timelapsing is not ! an option. my friend will release his new (  after 16 years awaiting period) cd  ( CD ? oh no - not theese days..)  and beeing his friend and when asked  i'm finding myself entitled to make his new promo video.  In my thinking  ( melody  commenting/touching  WORLD  CHANGE// FATHER WHAT WILL I EVER BECOME?)  )   treeing  / flowering would be a natural choice here - along both sides of the creek / winter_norwegian_small_river.
1/3 into it - looks like this : http://progresit.com/pinwiz.html  (sorry - no sound here (c)).
k vue9 xtreme is expensive and a overkill for my purpose  ( one  ( or maybe  several)  trees gowing from the snow )
i have no relevant  pay for this job - so - this is a 2d job in ae  and I need some input !

  • Creating a removeable subset of the iPhoto Database

My iPhoto library has grown to the size where I have to make CD/DVD Backups of the photos (and subsequently store the disk images on an external hard drive for further backup safety), just to have enough space to keep Mac OS X running smoothly.
Looking at these disc backups, it seems as if they just make a smaller iPhoto library, storing all the information, modified versions, and originals.
My question is, can I have sub-libraries on an external drive where I just need to plug in the drive, and can then access all the photos in that library and use them normally? It seems as if iPhoto is already able to do it with discs burned, but there is no other way to export photos in this manner.
I understand Apple needing to dumb down the abilities of iPhoto to keep inexperienced users from messing up their iPhoto libraries, but this feature seems as if it could be easily implemented without trouble.
Any ideas on how to do this?
    15" PowerBook G4 (DL Super Drive)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   1.5GB RAM, 80GB HD

Ok, how do I tell Apple that hard drive space, although cheap, does not grow on trees, especially in my PowerBook
I'm looking through the "rebuilt" library (which I had to do the "rebuild thumbnails" thing to, because it didn't get that right), and there are tons of pictures in the "modified" folder that I did absolutely no modifications to.
It turns out, iPhoto is making 2 copies of every portrait (camera turned 90°) image I take when it imports them into the library. This wastes about 3GB of my hard drive space...
And for some reason, when I did the rebuild thumbnails, it duplicated the thumbnails for movie files, so now there are 2 of each of those in the "modified" folder for each movie.
I used the iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild, then used the command+option menu to recreate the thumbnails.
Whatever is going on, Apple needs to fix it. My 10 mega-pixel camera already fills up my hard drive, and making needless copies of photos doesn't help it at all.
Overall, the iPhoto Library Manager seemed to work fine for me. I'd like to split the library now, but unfortunately, that's a "paid" feature, so I'm going to have to work around that (duplicate and prune...) Apple should give that guy some cash, and incorporate everything it does into iPhoto, just to make it easier for people.
Heck, I may just go ahead and spring for aperture (or Adobe Light Room), but seeing as my camera doesn't support RAW images (thank you Canon...), I'd be paying for a ton of features I won't ever use. I want to have the ability to easily manage my photos, and be able to export, print, make slideshows, open in iMovie, etc. iPhoto already does it all, it's just that if you want to store photos in more than once place, things get complicated.
Apple needs to make "iPhoto Advanced" or "Aperture Express"...

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Stuck on Windows Vista with Lenovo G550?

Hi, I am experiencing a problem which is making me get really mad at Lenovo Customer Service and Microsoft at the same time. I am using a G550 with 1.8GHz Celeron CPU and 2GB DDR RAM with 250GB HDD and G4500 Graphics
    Here my Problem:
I was quite happy when buying my laptop, and couldnt wait to install Windows 7 on it. As I did so, I figured out very soon that there are major issues with Windows 7 on my laptop, and I was not able to run any of my software. Games wouldnt run, the programs would crash and I felt fooled in a way. That was why I then thought of XP, which was a very simple OS, but at least would run all of my software on this Notebook that I had just bought. So I installed XP and I could not find all the drivers I needed, I was not able to run my WIreless LAN-Network and in total XP is a 9 year old piece of software, which has many security issues, and wont be suiting a new Laptop in this price category. I mean I spent some 500 dollars on this notebook, and then I end up running XP on it? No thanks!
So I moved to Vista, which was my last hope, and which would at least run my applications, not crash and updatable. And at least I could really use the ease of this notebook on Vista. But one thing that really makes me crazily mad is, that I happen to have the worst performance with Windows Vista. I run SP2, the start procress needs like 40seconds without logon. Another additional 20 seconds for loading all the autostart programs (which are just CA Anti Virus and the usual system stuff). Do I have to be stuck on Windows Vista forever? I am experiencing so many problems with this operating system, but somehow its just more convenient than old dusty XP and new crashy windows7. Is it really this bad, that after spending hundreds of dollars on a new laptop I have to stick ot vista, in order to stay up to date and use my old programs which windows 7 just wont run?
I think its bit of an Ironie that Microsoft does not solve their incompatibility issues with lenovo laptops, and that Lenovo does not care about the problems their customers experience.
I was very well surprised when I bought this notebook until I realized the problems like:
Disk turning on and off al the time
    Incompatibility with Win7
Driver problems on old OS like XP
I think lenovo really ows us a statement, and Microsoft should really tell us what we are going to purchase before we buy it. Money doesnt grow on trees and I am not willing to spend a lot of money on OS and Notebooks that later wont run correctly.
    Whats your opinion on this?
    Mahdi
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi if you want to stay in vista...
Here you find some acceleration hints for vista ..
    Vista Tune Up
if you running more XP based programs (esp.. games) why not choose XP ?
but thats your own choice ....

  • Hp 8560w booting into black screen, seems to be booting without display

    Hi,
Ive got this elitebook 8650w from a friend who asked me to help him try to get it to run.
First thing noticable that something was wrong with this machine  is when it started shutting down/rebooting randomly,  i suspected overheating since it hadnt been cleaned and doing these shutdowns while it was running 3d games.
I told my friend he had to get it cleaned or it could sustain damage.
The next day the system started to reboot right after it completed windows logon, getting into a loop.
I suspected the temprature failsafe was doing this, because after the system did one cold start,it would boot to windows, reboot on its own and then wouldnt get through the boot process alltogether and just showed a black screen with the cooling fan running at top speed, capslock blinking.
It wasnt even showing the hp bios startup screen anymore.
I tried hooking up a monitor to the external vga,  but the monitor goes into standy and remains black.
I know it did boot onto windows eventhough it was showing a blackscreen because i could type in the logon password, wait a bit and then shutdown the system with pressing alt-f4, enter.
clearly the system boots but just the display isnt working. but it isnt giving off any beeps or showing anything on boot.
So i took out the cooling parts and cleaned it to redo the thermal paste.
the job had previously  been done by hp, and turned out to be done very very poorly,   half the GPU didnt even have thermal paste onit, a big airbubble prevented contact for more then 2/4th of the gpu surface.
i feared a burnout,  but the surface didnt show discoloration and it had been working like this since he got it.
Eventhough it was a poor job done, it didnt seem to be burnt and the temperature failsafe just saved it from burning out.
After thouroughly cleaning the big blobs of paste hp put there most of it ending up next to the gpu and cpu instead of onit, blobs big enough to cover atleast 4 of the same type gpu's/cpu's
I redid the thermal paste using arctic silver number 5, the way it should be done and then reinstalled the blocks and heatpipes.
It all went smoothly into place and i reassembled the parts taken off the laptop.
Confident i rebooted, nothing changed and the problem persisted, it seems to be booting, but the screen doesnt display a thing, and stays completely black.
Shining a light onto the screen doesnt reveal any unlit graphics due to a broken backlight or anything.
Since it went through this loop often and me and my friend have been pressing keys to see if it would boot into a bios screen or anything i suspected the bios might have gotten screwed up, so i decided to try and restore default bios.
But how to do that without a screen?   i tried locating a bios jumper to do this  but didnt find any.
Then i found a text the hp forom saying i could force factory setting by pressing f10  repeatedly  5x times during startup, then f5  for default and then f10 to safe and exit, enter.
I did try that a couple of times,  but the machine doesnt reboot as it should when you safe an exit bios, s i dont even know if i get into bios in reality.
Now ive come across a few known problems with this machine in my forumcrawling.
2 problems wich results in the same behaviour are : 1 a faulty mobo and 2 a faulty board for the webcam behind the top of the display somehow preventing the screen to work properly.
So , dear hp support -  are there any known problems and sulotions to them other then, drain power and boot again?
If this machine did appear on the market with some of em having a faulty mobo, like some mssges say, why is that not on the  official forum, and could i be dealing with such a machine,  how do i find out?
If im dealing with a broken display,  could that have been caused by a videocard overheating?
You can help me by telling me:
-Can i force bios default without having an active screen? if so,  how?  just pulling the battery and draining power didnt change a thing.
-Can i find out if GPU is broken  (the system does seem to boot in the dark on a cold start)
-Can i find out if the display is broken by blinking messages or someting?
-Are there other known problems with this machine that give these failures as a result?
Can it be theres a broken inverter for the backlight? i geuss not, the vga port would be working then.
    hopefull for an answer,
    A friend's computer fixer.

I brought it into the Apple Store and I was completely denied of the 8600m GT recall. I am not paying $800 for a **** logic board replacement! Seriously, what the ****!?
I find this problem just as bad as the 8600m GT failures because this isn't the only forum I've been too that have people complaining about the same thing.
I don't know what to do anymore. Money doesn't grow on trees and I need a working laptop for school.
If anyone has any other suggestions please don't hesitate to let us know here.
Good luck to the rest of you!

  • Stock market short selling ( what a cool way to make money )

    Hi
This was on BBC internet today...
There are also proposals for new guidelines on short selling, including requiring managers to regularly disclose information on important short positions to national authorities.
Short selling is a technique that sees investors borrow an asset, such as shares, currencies or oil contracts, from another investor and then sell that asset in the relevant market hoping the price will fall.
The aim is to buy back the asset at a lower price and return it to its owner, pocketing the difference.
On Monday, a key committee of Euro MPs backed a directive that may lead to greater supervision of the hedge fund industry.
Finance ministers must now negotiate with the European parliament over the legislation. Talks will begin on 31 May before a final vote in July.
If I remember right...in 1971 at Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Smith...this is what happened:  Keep in mind there was only one "baby bond" or baby stock house...where you could have an account for less than about $10,000...in other words, all accounts were institutional, corporate etc...not individuals unless they were fairly wealthy....certainly not joe blow from next door.  Right off the bat I gotta say I can't cover "who owns the exchanges - the deregulation of banks and the effect on trading and underwriting...hedge funds and so on....it's very different today than it used to be...
But anyway, this is a day in the life of Bob The Buy-In-Clerk at Merrill in 1971...
Bob looks at a computer printout of fanned pages with a list of failed trades...
    What's a failed trade ?
You make a trade on the exchange...buying 10 shares of ATT at $10---   Being the seller.  You are a broker ( Kidder and Peabody ).  You have a customer that wanted to sell the ATT.  You do that for him.  You get a commission.  You have the shares in your vault because your customer didn't want them in his house. You sold to Merrill because THEY have a customer that wanted ATT.  Merrill will keep the shares in their vault so the customer doesn't have to keep them in his house.
Simple....BUT NOW WHAT ?  You have 5 days ( 5 business days ) to complete the trade.  5 Days for Kidder and Peabody to get a guy on a bicycle to run the 10 shares over to Merrill and hand them over through a window that looks like a bank teller's window....  ( THIS IS CALLED OVER THE COUNTER ...the window...which is where that term comes from re: trading between brokers that doesn't go through the exchanges )
If somebody goes to get the ATT from the vault at Kidder Peabody and discovers they are not there then what ?  Perhaps there was a death in the family of the customer and the shares are being broken up according to the estate settlement / last will ......like a piece of paper that says 30 shares on it needs to get broken into 3 pieces of paper that says 10 on them...This is called legal transfer...
Point being....whoops, the shares are at the bank being reprinted and the old one destroyed...( bank being the underwriter with the plates to make prints ) so you can't deliver the stuff.... After 5 days of not getting the ATT from Peabody it becomes a FAILED Trade...and Merrill is now within it's legal right to buy the shares it needs from someone else....another broker.....
If the price has gone down Merrill can buy the 10 shares and still collect ( from Peabody ) the money (difference) paid originally. Merrill keeps the difference, not their customer .......If the price has gone up Merrill still collects the difference but since you had to pay more you don't have any left over to keep for yourself....you just get the shares to your customer.....So buying and selling on failed trades ( a very common practice since it's unavoidable for legitimate reasons ) was the genesis of "selling short"......
Everyone knows you have 5 days to make a trade good.  Everyone knows that with credit from the broker and some nice deregulation..(naked short sell....you don't need to actually own the stock at all !!!  Like a miracle !!! Sell stuff you don't even have ....How cool is THAT ! ).you can make a trade (SELL ) betting the price will go down within 5 days...then buy it for less than you bought if for !   Like finding money growing on trees !!!!!
5 days was in 1971...  I have no idea how much time people have now in that market, and if it's over the counter it's not even going through the SEC dictated 5 day thing....so I'm out of luck about knowing much about what goes on nowadays....and I don't miss it a bit...
What used to be a function of making good on trades has turned into a betting system all it's own....not to make good on trades, but just to make the money tree shake....and so there's the down tick rule and up tick rule...haha....
Now the result to someone like Mr. Long Term investor like me...of short selling...and result to the Doggy Biscuit Company Inc....
I have stock in Doggy Biscuit...it's a nice company...with some cash on hand but some debt as well...it has a line of credit from a nice big bank. It's line of credit is based on it's assets ( worth )...It has a few shares of this and that on it's books ( other doggy products it has invested in )....
There is some bad news about some distribution system ( UPS goes on strike and now many companies like Doggy Biscuit can't get certain stuff to make the biscuits and has trouble delivering said biscuits...)...and some people who hear about it figure they will sell Doggy Biscuit short...yipee...almost guaranteed money off the money tree !!!!  Share prices go down....Doggy Biscuit can't understand why it's going down so fast and so far !!!  This isn't a deal breaker...the strike will end, the dogs will get the biscuits....it's just a little burp in the quarter....but Doggy Biscuit, thanks to all the many short sellers ( yippeeee  ....free money !!!! ) Doggy Biscuit tanks out losing 50% of it's worth in a couple days.  It's line of credit shrinks.  It gets called ( margin call ) on some debt and has to sell it's stock in the other doggy products at a loss....and Doggy Biscuit is on the ropes.  Mr. Long Term investor like me now has Doggy Biscuit stock worth about one half what I bought it for....I have lost tons of money on the share price....
That is the wonderful world of short selling.... lets do more of it !!!!!!!!!!

More cool info about the marketplace:
    http://www.investopedia.com/university/futures/default.asp
Found the above link tutorial on futures market...very good tutorial...
below is a segment of one section that applies more or less to my amazement over the proposed idea of a futures market in motion pictures...
After you read it , think of the possibilities of "influencing" the marketing and success / failure of a particular movie ( with movie stars...a rich source of material for publication ---news items etc )....  and or the overall health of a studio ( distributer - independent productions etc )  It boggles the mind...The effect of piracy in certain countries etc...
How far does the futures market for the price of grain, for example ( leading to the spot market and actual delivery of commodity ) skew off into the realm  of whacky speculation when considering world wide distribution of a movie making a certain profit or not....   and who in the world could possibly oversee that kind of derrivative or settle disputes ?

    portion of tutorial below
    Speculators
Other market participants, however, do not aim to minimize risk but rather to benefit from the inherently risky nature of the futures market. These are the speculators, and they aim to profit from the very price change that hedgers are protecting themselves against. Hedgers want to minimize their risk no matter what they're investing in, while speculators want to increase their risk and therefore maximize their profits.
In the futures market, a speculator buying a contract low in order to sell high in the future would most likely be buying that contract from a hedger selling a contract low in anticipation of declining prices in the future.
Unlike the hedger, the speculator does not actually seek to own the commodity in question. Rather, he or she will enter the market seeking profits by offsetting rising and declining prices through the buying and selling of contracts.
    Trader
    Short
    Long
    The Hedger
Secure a price now to protect against future declining prices
Secure a price now to protect against future rising prices
    The Speculator
Secure a price now in anticipation of declining prices
Secure a price now in anticipation of rising prices
In a fast-paced market into which information is continuously being fed, speculators and hedgers bounce off of - and benefit from - each other. The closer it gets to the time of the contract's expiration, the more solid the information entering the market will be regarding the commodity in question. Thus, all can expect a more accurate reflection of supply and demand and the corresponding price.

  • Clone monitor for macbook

    Hi
Question 1: Regarding incident and immediate ability to function.
I have a Nov. 2007 Macbook that (now) has a broken monitor (display forcibly bent).  Visually the monitor is 100% unusable, the computer appears to function okay but without visual, it is difficult to diagnose completely.  Is it possible to plug the computer into the back of a small tv VGA input to clone the display?  I have the Mac Display to VGA adapter and VGA cable.  The TV recognizes the VGA input as an extended display but not a clone display.
    Question 2:  Regarding permanant repair
With money not growing on trees and the computer not covered by warranty and not officially supported by Apple, What are the best and cheapest options for getting the monitor fixed or replaced?  I have access to an electronics shop, some expertise in the area, and I'm willing to do as much work as possible myself. Where can I get used MacBook displays cheap?

I have used it that way on the AIr, yes,... however right now im using said monitor via HDMI to a MAC MINI.
HDMI being the desirable connection given that I can use this dongle to hook it to my AIR or PRO.., or straight connecti an AppleTV to the Monitor.      I have a dongle like this to connect to my AIR

  • Why do ipod touchs only last 1 year?

My best friend has as ipod and it's lasted for like two years now. I've had to buy 2 ipod's in the time she's had her's. Why arn't mine lasting as long as her's? I've heard somewhere that normal iPod touches only last 1 year.. WHY?? It's not like money grows off trees. And iPod touches arn't cheep either.. so please help. (FYI I'm having to buy my 3rd iPod touch now because my screen is all white. )

Maybe it's overheating from all the spellchecking it's required to do.
I've had mine 2.5 years and it still works great. Make sure you let the battery go real low once in a while and give it a nice full recharge. Make sure you don't drop it. Make sure you don't put it in water. Make sure you connect it to your Mac/PC once in a while, back it up, and restore it to original factory condition. the only issue I have is that the battery doesn't last as long as it used to, but it's still pretty good.

  • I Lost £2.5pence once again & I made no download.

Yesterday I just got £5 top up, and today I just clicked on app store by mistake & I've lost £2.5pence. Like what the heck they say you can get free apps but its not really like what the heck they're eating my money. Just getting annoyed now. Someone please tell me is there any way of accessing app store for free, because for me money doesn't grow on trees. Would really appreciate it.

You should check in the App Store, not the Apple Store. With OS X 10.6.6 and later (you have 10.6.8), it should be shown as an icon in the Dock:
Forcing the machine to shutdown by holding in the power button should not be done as a regular means of shutting down; the issue preventing the normal shutdown from wotking as intended should be addressed. This is commonly a matter of trashing the applicable preference files and restarting. I no longer have access to a 10.6 system, but perhaps someone who does can suggest which files to look for and where.

  • Hdcam workflow

    Hi all,
I'll have a project comes in as hdcam source but the final is sd dvd so I am thinking of this workflow:

2- same as option 1 but consolidate the project & recapture as full hd & pump to hdcam for back up.
3- capture as full hd. but don't know if my sonic sata enclosures can handle it. I have 1 promax 5bay sata enclosure & 1 sonic 5bay enlosure. thinking raid them together with 1Tgb then i'd have 10Tgb there.
    please help.

As long as you have the proper equipment (HD capture card, high speed drives, HD broadcast monitor) and the skills needed to online, then you should be fine. If not...then you are just shooting yourself in the foot. This isn't a MONEY GROWS ON TREES thing. If you think money grows on trees here in CA, you got another thing comin! Just figure that it'll be cheaper to hire someone with the proper equipment to work on this for a couple days, rather than go out and buy, or rent, the equipment needed to do this...possibly doing something wrong...and ending up hiring someone anyway to fix it.
You won't believe how often I or someone else is hired to come fix something that was done incorrectly.
This isn't to say that you don't have the experience. There is no way of knowing this from the short postings you have made. But unfamiliarity with the online process indicates a lack of knowledge in this area, and we just want to give you fair warning.

  • Spotify are stealing money from me and I can't stop it!

For 6-months now I've been trying to cancel a Spotify account that I didn't think I'd ever setup.  I once went part way through a setup process but never followed through and have hence never ever used the service. I have been unable to login or retrieve any user details and hence, cannot cancel thgis subscription myself.  I have had no response to help requests and have been left with no option but to get my bank to help Barclays.  They have sent a notice asking it to be stopped but to no avail and are hence now escalating legally. This is nothing short of theft.

Thank you, but this happened last year. After 6 months (yes I filed my first request around March '14, and after continuous efforts I only stopped getting charged in October'14) my issue was resolved. Yes I CONSTANTLY replied to my support emails, I did everything I possibly could to get them to hear me, but I never heard from them, and of course nothing was ever done for me until months and months later. Never even got an apology.
I only posted here b/c I was reviewing my finances recently and was reminded of this travesty. I felt the need to tell that story so that its further reaffirmed that alot of people have experienced this sort of thing, and I can't express how messed up it is. You can't steal money from cusomers. It destroys our trust. I will never subscribe to Spotify again. I've had friends who expressed interest in doing so, but I had to warn them to only do it if they are 200% on board for it, because if they ever decide to cancel they can expect to lose more than $50 (yes that adds up for us recent graduates) Fortunately they listen, because yes, money doesn't grow on trees, and customers don't deserve to be treated like that.

  • RMA status for my locked up zen mi

so i finally sent in my creative zen micro.... had the infamous "CREATIVE" screen lockup.. and under the status it said "HANG" whats that mean?!
it cost me $32 CDN to send it to oklahoma .... what a rip off... people think money grows on trees or something? I have another question.. can I return my micro directly back to Creative.... cauze it was bought in portugal and i li've in canada.. so i can't exactly hop on the next plane and return it. If i do return it, will i get the same amount i paid in euros or converted into canadian?Message Edited by euro_chick on 07-4-2005 04:2 AM

I think both of these questions are best addressed to Creative support.
"Hang" might mean some kind of player lockup, but could mean something else.
I doubt very much Creative will allow the player to be returned to them.

it just lectures you on what it is, but not how its used. Its like me writing a book about apples, about their color, how they grow from trees, how they fall to the ground. But I never ONCE EVER tell you its food and that you eat it. How is this good documentation?
picknumber = random() % 5; is this correct? further, how do I ensure this is an absolute number? sorry just a frustrated at Objective C syntax, and weak sauce documentation.

If I try to place anything in random( <<>> ) I get a too many operations error. So random(4) get me that error. I had to ask my coding buddy how this works, but he's an old schooler coder back in the machine language days plus he took all these mathematical computer courses. For those that haven't been to these classes (dunno if they even exist anymore, all the mathematics classes I took involved calculus and I never did learn about the MOD function. Or that is was expressed as %).
I will break it down for you. random() in Objective C generates an Integer of 0-2 power of 32. Or about 4billion. Its an Integer so its going to be an Absolute Value number. Using the MOD function "%" is telling random() to divide that number by n and return an Integer remainder, NOT a remainder remainder (like a fraction).
so for instance 5/4 = 1.25 but using MOD the remainder it is actually 1. Since 4 goes into 5 only once, 5-4 = 1, our remainder AFTER 4 has been subtracted is 1.
random() % 4 is telling random to generate a number between 0-4billion divided by 4, return the remainder.
So no matter what number it generates its going to return a random value between 0 and 3. Here's how
    0 / 4 = 0 (since 0/4 = 0 with NO remainder) so result = 0
    1 / 4 = 1 (not sure how supply math example here)
    2 / 4 = 2 (not sure how supply math example here)
    3 / 4 = 3 (not sure how supply math example here)
    4 / 4 = 0 (since 4/4 = 1 with NO remainder) so result = 0
    5 / 4 = 1 (since 5/4 = 1 with 1 remainder) so result = 1
    6 / 4 = 2 (since 6/4 = 1 with 2 remainder) so result = 2
    7 / 4 = 3 (since 7/4 = 1 with 3 remainder) so result = 3
    8 / 4 = 0 (since 8/4 = 2 with NO remainder) so result = 0
    9
    10
    11
    12
    etc....
Tod is correct I will have add +1 get a random number of 1-4. so the proper code would look like this
    picknumber = 1 + random() % 4;

  • WILL NOT RUN ON MY MAC

I have a Power PC mac and have used Firefox many years now. Why are you abandoning my platform? Do you think money grows on trees? I'm on a fixed income!

    For older Macs that aren't supported in Firefox 4.0, try TenFourFox for Power PC's running Mac 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 . <br />

  • IBooks publishing process

    Hi,
I just started the submission process to publish on iBooks.  I entered various details, such as:
    Book title
    Publisher name
    US EIN (tax identification)
And then it took me to a screen that suggested my application would be reviewed.  At this stage, I haven't submitted the actual content.  I'm presuming that I've not missed anything, and that this initial stage exists for some reason.
Can anyone shed some light on how long this stage takes?
I have a UK publishing company, with ISBNs in place, and of course, a cracking book.
    Thanks,
    Venice A Fulton

    Hello Patrick,
I can only assume that it's a random glitch, as three months is enough time for you to grow a tree and make a paper copy!  Could you start the entire process again, or is it preventing you somehow?
I would say that there's a possibility that the iBookstore only accepts some books, but regardless, some notification of this would be likely.  Perhaps this was sent, and ended up in a junk email folder.
As a side note, the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing process is relatively easier, although, with low barriers to entry, comes less quality, and vice versa.
    Hope this helps,
    Venice A Fulton
