Grub dies on every reboot

I have a fresh installation of Arch Linux on an Acer Aspire One netbook. Every time I reboot, the MBR gets hosed and I need to reinstall grub manually. Is there a way to diagnose this?
By hosed, I mean that grub repeats "Loading stage1.5" endessly.
Thanks!

Perhaps you misconstrue my suggestion.
I am not suggesting to install grub which the user has done and I assume he corrects the grub failure at boot prompt in order to boot.  If he does this, the grub will be corrected for that boot-up only and will fail when rebooting.
My advice was to fix the /etc/boot/grub entry while he is booted to reflect the same fixes he made in order to boot.
Perhaps I have misinterpreted what the user meant when he skipped all the details and reported that grub would fail upon reboot every time.
Thus, grub repair entries at prompt do not become permanent until /etc/boot/grub has been modified accordingly.

  • Keyboard Pairing On Every Reboot

    Hi,
I know there are a LOT of similar posts on this but I can't seem to find one that addresses the issue of the OS requesting I pair the keyboard after every reboot. I have the logitec edge and it works beautifully once set up. I have to press the discover button and re-pair every time, though. I know, I could have bigger problems but it's still a big of a nuisance. The magic mouse paired on first boot up and never needed to be repaired after a reboot.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • Have to reinstall Flash after every reboot.

Windows 7 - IE9 - Flash version 11.0.1.152 - Plugins and OS up to date - ESET Smart Securty 4
I get prompted to install new version of Flash after a reboot, so it happens at least once a day.
I install Flash and it installs just fine and works until the PC boots up again.
I tried some of the following:
    - Use Adobe Flash Uninstall program before installing
    - Using standalone install program
    - Checked ActiveX Filter and it was off...turning it on causes
this same behavior, but the problem I have has nothing to do with the filter
Not sure when this started, but the user didn't have this problem until recently.
I am using ESET Smart Security 4. On all our systems, and his PC is the only
one that is having a problem. Need some pretty hard evidence before I bother
with uninstalling ESET just to see if that would help.
The part that is really strange...if I go to manage add-on's while it is working,
I see the Flash player there and Adobe's name there and that it is enabled.
After I reboot and go into the add-on manager, Flash is still there and still
enabled, but it now says "Unknown" instead of "Adobe" and is no longer
listed near the other Adobe programs. But then, when I reinstall it, that gets
"fixed" and now says Adobe again. So it almost seems like an IE9 problem
and possibly a corruption problem. No known problems with the PC. I suppose
that reloading the PC from scratch would fix the problem...at least I hope it would,
but I'm also not ready to do major surgery if there is an easier fix.

    sorry no hablo ingless

I also downloaded that Nirsoft tool, and on my (64-bit) system I also only see the ocx and exe registered.  But everything works well on my system. So I currently have no other ideas.  Hopefully someone from the Adobe team will have a look at this topic.

  • Prevent the Internet Security Suite from scanning after every reboot

My Verizon Internet Security Suite is evidently set to scan everything after every reboot of the computer.  My computer is rather slow anyway.  But that ties up all the resources for about 15 minutes whenever I reboot the computer.  It keeps tabs on things in real time.  It's not necessary to scan after every reboot.  Can I turn that setting OFF?

Hi Hermhart, Yes there should be an option to set that to off. try this link to see if this helps & let us know thanks Brett.

    2. Copy file "libxml2.dll"
    3. Open new windows explorer, to to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    4. Paste file "libxml2.dll" to the location.

  • "Application opened for the first time" warning after every reboot

Hello, I have a problem with Lion 10.7.5. The system does not remember that I already opened applications before. After every reboot, every time I open an application it displays the warning as if it's the first time I'm opening it. Anyone knows how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help.

In my case, the problem disappeared after I installed the 10.7.5 supplemental update.

  • Server stucks at Applying Computer Settings after every reboot

    Hello!
On one of our sites containing around 15 servers, whenever a terminal server is rebooted, it gets stuck on Applying Computer Settings for around 15 minutes. If it is un-joined from the domain then no issue. Moreover, once it is done with this delay, no time
delay is observed in user login. But after every reboot, 15 - 20 mins delay is always observed. Domain is the same at other sites and no issue is being observed else where.

Yeah that didn't work. I get a message about .asoundrc being old or corrupted so Alsamixer basically ignores it.
I assume you changed the 'XFi' (my preferred sound card) to 'STX'

The following may work for you as a shortcut to testing, instead of fully uninstalling each of those programs. It may also fail for some, but that's the worst that will happen, and it may save you a lot of time.
For any of the possible culprit kernel extensions, it is not necessary to completely uninstall the parent program.
You can temporarily uninstall any .kext, which may be causing the problem, by doing the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
    sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

  • Reinstalling Audio drivers after every reboot

    Hi,
    I have a P750 PSAY3A-02J001 which i gor in australia.
Recently I had to buy a new hard drive (as the old was scratched) and have windows 7 reinstalled. This was done in England.
After this I then restored from my external Hard drive.
After this restore i saw a lot of icons shaped like a clamp which all seemed to refer to specific Toshiba settings. I have opened and installed all of these and they appear to be working okay except for the Audio drivers.
After every reboot I have no sound when playing movies etc and have to reinstall the drivers again.
I have saved the folder on my desktop (for ease to reinstall every time) however Im wondering if the Laptop is not starting up this driver or its being saved in the wrong spot? any way to fix this?
Also I was attempting to use the Toshiba doanloads section to update everything however under my Model P750 there is no PSAY3A-02J001 (my model doesnt seem to exsist?)
    Many thanks in advance

    Satellite P750/02J (PSAY3A-02J001)
You didn't find your machine listed here because this site is only for US computers.
Downloads for your Aussie model are here.
After this I then restored from my external Hard drive.
Please tell us all about that backup image. Exactly which application are you using?

What is the make and specific model of the new hard drive? If it uses advanced-format technology, that may be the source of the trouble.

  • Can I restore the computer after every reboot?

    Hi!
I am renting a place for weekend getaway and would like to provide a fully working iMac. That said, I don't want every week to go there and fix the mac if something go bad or user mess up the computer, install virus and such.
I stayed at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel in Amsterdam. They had an Imac in the room that, at every reboot, wiped out what you had done and went back to your initial state.
That is EXACTLY what I am looking for with minor tweek. I would like to be able to remote-trigger the restore via the web. The process need to be virus proof.
Any super wiz can walk me trough how I can do such a thing on my iMac? I am ready to pay for consulting if needed.
And if by any chance you know a software that also do it for PC, please tell me as I include a 3x 27 inchs screen / SSD Raid-0 fully rig gaming pc in the weekend rent. =)
    Bests!
    - Andrea
    PS: Sorry for my english.

    Thank you!
But the Guess account can be wipe automatically? How about if they install and app? Or install documents on the harddrive?
I need to clean all that, no one knows what they will leave on the computer and the next person to rent the place could have some surprise. =)
On the DoubleTree, I wasnt limited to install my app and do my work, wich was great. But as soon as I reboot, everything was gone. (Ram disk??)

  • Synaptics Touchpad Tap Scroll settings changed back to defaults on every reboot. Windows 10

After the Windows 10 upgrade my Synaptics Touchpad setings seem to be reset to factory defaults on every reboot.  I go in and change to deselect Tap and Scroll gesture options, save, and everything works as expected.  If I reboot my pc... all of my changes are erased. I go to Start >Settings > Mouse and Touchpad > Additional Mouse Options > Device Settings > Settings Right after boot:  MultiFinger Gestures (selected)  Scrolling (deselected)  Tapping (selected)  Buttons (selected) After change manually and saved:
MultiFinger Gestures (deselected)  Scrolling (deselected)  Tapping (deselected)  Buttons (selected) Rebooted again... and back to initial defaults (Arg!!!)  Can anyone suggest a fix?

Hello! I just wanted to share a solution to this issue. I've been having this issue ever since I started the Windows 10 insider program so it's sad that Microsoft didn't fix it before release. Anyway let's get started! The first thing you will want to do is uninstall the Synaptics Driver. Right click on the start button and click programs and features. Find the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver and uninstall it. You will eventually need to restart your PC but do not do that yet otherwise it will just reinstall itself. Next your going to want to Hide the update from Windows Update. To do this on Windows 10 you need to download a tool which can be found here. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 Run the tool it will begin detecting problems and searching for updates. You will get two options, Hide Updates or Show hidden updates. Click on Hide updates and on the list you will see the Synaptics Driver, place a checkmark on it and then click next. Let the wizard finish and you've successfully hidden the Synaptics pointing device driver. Next open settings and click on Update & security, click recovery on your left, and then click restart now under advanced startup. Next click on troubleshoot. Then at the choose an option screen, click advanced options, click on startup settings, and click restart. Once your computer restarts you'll see startup settings. Press the number 7 to disable driver signature enforcement. Your computer will now boot up. Login and open your web browser and go to this link http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php Download the latest synaptic's driver for Windows 8 and install it. Once installed, you maybe prompted to reboot so go ahead and reboot the computer. After that, go into your mouse settings and configure your touchpad to your liking. You will not have to worry about losing your settings after restarting the pc anymore. I suggest keeping the tool that allows you to hide or show hidden updates as it is quite handy.
    Summary:
    1.) Uninstall the Synaptics Driver
2.) Hide the Driver Update for Synaptics using this tool: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930
3.) Go to Settings, Update & security, recovery, advanced start [restart now]
4.) Click troubleshoot, advanced options, startup settings [restart now]
5.) Press the number 7 to disable driver signature enforcement
6.) Download the latest synaptic's driver for Windows 8 from the website. http://www.synaptics.com/en/drivers.php
7.) Reboot the computer if necessary.
8.) Configure your mouse settings to your liking.

  • Firewall resets rules on every reboot

    Hello folks!
Not so long time ago, I had a problem with my FW, which I solved by flushing the rules from the console - solved my issue temporarily.
Whether the FW is turn on or off, when I run nmap, it renders all my running services as being 'filtered'. So, what I do on every reboot is to first start the console and run the ipfw flush, in order to fix this - on every reboot.
Once again - the state of the FW is of no difference.
No third party FW app running, such as waterroof etc; everything updated. Haven't played with the kext files, basically absolutely nothing. Cant remember the last time I installed something new - I am just using it as it is and found out about this when a need arose to access my stuff remotely, as well as sharing in an ethernet network.
Hope someone can see why s this happening. Thank you for reading.

    The problem was solved.
What happened is that my iPhoto Folder is located on an external hard drive, nad it seems that by the time the computer OS X loads the external hard Drive is not running yet (differentely from the previous OS version).
To solve the problem, I copied the picture I wanted to use as background into my local hard drive, and then I loaded it as background !
    Thanks for the help.

  • Gnome resets all panel settings on every reboot

    Hi guys,
Ive been running Arch with gnome for a few months now, linux in general for a couple years, and I've come across this issue today.
Upon starting up the computer, gnome panel is completely reset (my applets and icons are all gone, and in its place is the default setup of the panels on a fresh install).  So i thought this was odd, reconfigured it to how i like it, and on next restart, its back to default again.
If there is any log files or conf's that may be helpful to you smart folks, please let me know ill supply them.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for taking a stab,
I checked the permissions and i own everything in ~/.gconf
Today as i booted up, the panels didnt go their defaults, but actually disappeared!.  the bottom panel is gone, and the top panel is shrunk to just the gnome menu.  When i right click and go to the properties, it does say "these properties are locked down"... however my user name is the owner of conf files.
How is it possible that I'm getting random settings for the panels on every reboot?

  • After upgrading to Firefox 9.0.1, on first run after every reboot, the following warning apears for every installed Add-on. "Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on"

After upgrading to Firefox 9.0.1, on first run after every reboot, the following warning appears for every installed Add-on.
"Another program on your computer would like to modify Firefox with the following add-on"
So, i have to "Enable" my installed Add-ons on each reboot.
Would you please help me !
P.S.: I found that these files (and some others) will be deleted on each reboot, and it happens on computer start up (not at shut down)!
    extensions.ini
    extensions.sqlite
    extensions.sqlite-journal
And as i mentioned, i have the same anti virus on my laptop and desktop, but i have not any problem on laptop.

Do you have security software that acts like a sandbox or uses virtualization to restore files on a next boot?
    See also:

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to do a compatibility check or see if there is a compatibility update available.
