Grub loading correct disk problem
Hi,
i have this problem: grub, during the boot, often load the sATA disk (160GB) instead the pATA (master on the first channel) disk .
Accordingly the sistem crash when tries to load the root partition (on sda3) because the disk label sda isn't the pATA but the sATA.
Have some solution? The problem seems that the uuid disk was not find during the boot...
I have not idea to solve this problem.

Recovery Disk Problem - Receiving the correct disks.
Hardware: HP Envy Ultrabook 4-4043cl, 64 bit, OS Win 7
Problem: Two months ago I had ordered and paid for the recovery disks for the above laptop computer. This order was made online. Within five days, I received three disks which turned out to be the incorrect disks for my model of computer. Since then I have made four requests (phone calls) to HP Tech Support for appropriate disks. I supply the original order information and appropriate data about my laptop. These requests take approximately twenty minutes to complete. Each time I have been told that the correct disks will be sent immediately. However, I have yet to receive the recovery disks. During the last request, I asked for a confirmation number and a estimated date of delivery. The support person stated that they do not supply that information. However, the support person stated his supervisor would be informed and I would received a phone call from this supervisor. The call never came.
I have not been able to use my HP Envy for the last two months because of this problem. What must I do to get my recovery disks?Sorry for walking you through steps you have already tried, that I was not aware of. It struck me odd that no Windows disk would boot and/or could see or read the hdd and I was hoping to get to a solution to that.
The fact that Recovery Disks state the drive is unreadable is not the normal message you get when having wrong set..they usually give a message that the machine is not supported by the disks or something very similiar. I take it that you are still getting that message after prepping with Cyberlink utilty cd?

Time Machine fails with this error: "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Barbara’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use."

My time machine will not back up. I get a Time Machine Error message that reads: "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Backup/(myname)'sMacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.
I have not been able to back up for two weeks, I think this occurred after an update to the operating system, but I am unsure.
How do I correct this problem?Have you tried restarting the computer? Also, see Time Machine Error from this pages sidebar under More Like This.

Tried to Recover a P25-S507 w/ Factory Disk but getting "GRUB Loading" Error
I upgraded my laptop's hard drive from the factory 60 GB to 100 GB. I am trying to reinstall the OS from the Recovery DVD labeled "TOSHIBA Recovery and Applications/Drivers DVD Satellite P25 Series, TK119/CL1578-1". I have already partitioned the new drive for 32GB (for the OS) and 68GB (for data use).
During the recovery process, the two partitions are recognized and then proceeds with installing on the first partition. After the first partition is formatted and the information is loaded and completed, the computer states to remove the CD and press ENTER to restart the laptop.
During restart the TOSHIBA logo appears and then a blank screen shows up with "GRUB loading" message. Then nothing happens and the laptop restarts, again showing the TOSHIBA logo, then the "GRUB loading" message again. This same restart cycle continues until I have to manually power off.
I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. Did I miss a step? Please help... Thanks.GRUB is a Linux bootloader, so I guess Linux was installed on the hard drive at one time.
Boot from a disk that has fdisk.exe on it and run 'fdisk /mbr' to rewrite the master boot record. -
Hi I just updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
I write DVD's using Final Cut Pro, creating a DVD that plays HD and Standard Definition on one disk.
My problem is when I used load the disk on my G5 it would ask if you want High Definition or Standard Definition, now it just defaults to Standard Definition.(I'm using Apple's DVD Player)
Can I fix this problem?Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
IOFireWireAVC.kext
IOFireWireFamily.kext
IOFireWireIP.kext
IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar? -
My newspaper downloaded. the download of jigzone puzzle created multiple copies of the puzzle in the same window. I went to safari to see if it was the jigzone website but it downloaded correctly. How do I get rid of the beta version I downloaded this morning or correct this problem. I closed firefox and restarted the computer (IMAX) and problem persisted.

Is anyone having problems with Firefox today? My websites are not loading correctly
Firefox just isn't working right today. My home page (yahoo.com) will not load correctly, nor does a university site for a course that I am teaching online. I can do both of these if I use Internet Explorer.

[Resolved] Stuck on "Grub Loading" Screen.
Hello everyone!
I have been attempting to set up a dual boot Windows 8/Arch Linux system.
I have installed Windows 8 and Arch Linux, and I have correctly set up and configured Grub.
I have been having a very puzzling problem however, which stems from my BIOS settings.
Whenever I set my boot sequence to "Hard Disk, CDROM" and attempt to boot, my system hangs on the "Grub Loading" screen indefinitely.
However, when I set the boot sequence to "CDROM, Hard Disk", the system goes to the "Loading Operating System ..." screen, scans the CDROM for bootable partitions, fails to find them (Presumably. No actual error message it outputted), then successfully loads Grub.
I have searched the web and the wiki for an answer, but because all of my queries are interpreted as changing the boot order of the OSes listed in Grub, I have been unable to find an answer.
While this is not a critical problem, I wish to have it configured as "Hard Disk, CDROM" because otherwise it adds about 10-15 seconds to the boot time as it has to scan the CDROM before proceeding.
Can anyone help me with this problem?
ADDITIONAL INFO:
I am using AHCI, with three hard drives. Both operating systems are installed to the first one (an SSD), with:
/dev/sda1 - SYSTEM_RESERVED
/dev/sda2 - Windows 8
/dev/sda3 - /boot

Sorry for not including grub-related information. I just thought that it wouldn't be needed considering grub works fine (sees Arch and Windows 8) when the bios boot order is correct, and within VirtualBox (Win 8 host, Arch guest) it also works fine. -
Footage changes once color project is loaded from disk
Hi all,
I have a big problem in Color 1.0.4.
I send a 20 minute edit from FCP to Color. All is fine. The edit is the first part of a marriage service. A shoot taken with two camera.
I did originally put the sequence together using Multi-Cam, but then I replaced all the clips with the originals as I had problems when I first went into color with this.
The problem is that one of the angles appears to have lost the information as to where the INOUT points are...This happens once the color project has been loaded from disk. (ALL is fine until I shut Color and reload the project). The sections in the sequence where this camera is used always plays the source file for that camera from the beginning. (A shot from outside the church!) This is causing me all sorts of problems and I cannot seem to get past this. I need to save the work and then re-open in FCP to see what the grade looks like as I don't have an external monitor.
Any help with this would be appreciated.
The thumbnails show the correct footage from the camera. Adding a section to the render queue results in a render of 1 frame. Even though the IN and OUT points on the Color timeline show roughly 20 seconds, the render view shows an in and out point one frame apart...

I know I get this sort of behavior on my external monitor if I've got a Kona export settings mismatch, but not on the timeline.
When you observe the application running back to "first frame" on park, but finds the correct images on play, sort of infers that there is a broken reference somewhere in how FCP is recalling the media.
Bad container? frame rate mismatch?
But before you re-edit, can you save the effort to this point by "Baking out" a movie of the sequence?
It would be at least interesting to know if QT finds the right media at your edit points. At that point, a fairly straightforward movie could be razored and sent to COLOR...

Cannot load recovery disk...even with new HD
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satelite M55-S135.
I'm currently having this problem:
My hard drive was making very loud clickey noises. Very shortly after this started, my computer flashed the blue screen of death, and then gave me the PXE-E61 error message of "Media Test Failure, Check Cable." My friends said the hard drive (HD) was fried. So i bought a new one. I put it in, made sure it was set to "Master" on the jumpers. Turned it on, got the same error message. I can't get windows to load. So then I thought, oh that's because there's no Windows installed! I went into BIOS and made SURE that it was recognizing the new HD, which it does. I then made it load from CD/DVD, the recovery disk starts up all fine and dandy, then I get the huge "Wrong Machine" error and I feel like I've had this before, and I see a gazillion other people have had. I know for a fact this is the correct disk. I took it out, clean it, inserted it back and tried again. Still didn't work. I saw another person who had this issue, and they suggested trying to prompt it this way instead: Q: > cd\base > os.bat
I tried this, still didn't work, because then it says it cannot find ghost.err. I put the disk into another laptop, and loaded it, and I made sure it detected it and saw all the correct subfolders and everything, etc. so there is nothing wrong with the disk. I'm not really sure where else to go from here. So I would appreciate any assistance. Oh, I've also seen many references to downloading some utility from the downloads section on the toshiba website but how am I even supposed to get to that on my broken laptop if my computer is broke and windows won't load?

Probably my old HD was not defective, the problem is with the S-ATA bus interface.
After moving the new internal disk to an external Firewire case, the iMac did boot correctly and no more freezing after OSX updates; before that I also used a new cable (the one connecting the HD to the bus), with no luck.
So, I think the errors of the AHT and Apple Diagnostic are not so helpful, given that it's impossible to know if the broken part is the HD, the cable or the interface on the MB (and all the tests of the motherboard passed ok).
It did cost me a lot anyway: new HD, a good Firewire/USB case, new SuperDrive and a few ours of work of a technician (today I could stay with him to learn how to open the iMac).

Using: Suspend2kernel Grub Loading takes 20+ seconds
Hi!
Is it normal for resuming from suspend2 patched kernel to take 20 seconds at the "GRUB loading...." stage?
Kind of defeats the whole purpose of hibernation if its meant to take that long....
This happens almost every time. Atomic copy and stuff is quite snappy though.
Any ideas?No it doesn't happen with the stock kernel and suspend2 works fine here. Successful resumes practically every single time. I suppose that means hibernate scripts are configured right.

From arch wiki,
Do never use a different kernel to resume than you used to suspend! If pacman updates your kernel, don't suspend before you have rebooted properly.
Could this be related to the issue?
I'm thinking of reinstalling grub completely since I have had weird grub problems long before this... -
System freezes due to hard disk problems only on Linux (not windows)
Intro/context:
Recently i've bought (about 2 months) a new laptop, a Lenovo G50-70, which came with Windows 8.1. As i had no interest on that OS, i formatted the disk and installed only Arch Linux. During that time i experienced system freezes which i had no idea why they were happening. As time went by, i found disk errors on system logs related to hard drive. I searched those errors and almost everything i found was that my hard drive had problems, so i decided to use my warranty. But first, i installed the original OS back again. And after using it a couple of weeks, i didn't experiencie any problem with my hard drive (on Linux it was really frequent). Now i've installed Arch Linux back, along with original Windows 8.1, having dual boot. There is no disk problem when using Windows, but when on Arch, i have the same errors and problems i used to have. So i assume it may be related to kernel or some confniguration issue.
I also haven't noticed any relation between system freezes and system use. I mean, it can happen either under light or heavy use.
tl dr: system freezes randomly for some minutes when using linux due to hard drive problems. The problem doesn't happen on windows.
What i've done so far:
The first period i was on Arch, i run smart (long and short), fsck, and hdparm tests. And nothing (no errors). Searched for bad blocks, and nothing. When back on windows, i also run tests on hdd and found no problems, except some sector reallocation not-that-nice indicators. These problems occured at the end of the first arch installation period. But still i currently experience no problem on windows.
I've also tried setting libata: noncq, 3.0G, noacpi, noapic kernel parameters, and had no result.
Changed BIOS setting from AHCI to Legacy, and no result. Also updated BIOS and no result.
I found no firmware update for this hard drive.
So i don't know what other thing i can try. I want to emphasize that there is no problem, no freezing, when running Windows, so i don't think it's a hard drive issue.

Now, i'm not 100% sure about this, but i think problems began when using my current user. Disk is partitioned the following way:

So, i believe problems, for some reason, are related (and were related), both before and now, to the /home partition, /dev/sda8 in this ocassion.
Because of this, i booted into systemd rescue mode, like root, rw, and unmounted /home partition. Despite root-only limitations, i used the system for a couple of hours, started lxqt, browsed the web mainly, and experienced no problem at all.
Now i booted normally, with my regular user, and these problems are experienced just like before (and almost instantly, like 3 or 5 minutes after starting system use).
dmesg this time showed a some different log, though it's not the first time i see this. I just didn't saved that kind of log before.

There are some sda8 (home) related messages. I also found these messages first time Arch was installed (i think also related to home partition).
