Grub won't install after reformat from gentoo install (error 18)

Previously I had gentoo installed with grub in the / partition in sdb2 (hd1,1).  I got through the arch install after reformatting that jfs partition except grub wouldn't install because it said the "Selected Cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS".  I didn't change any partitioning so I don't understand how that would be possible.
I ran fdisk to fix the partition order, but it didn't have anything to fix.  Another oddity is that when I try to boot up, I get a grub command prompt with no errors, and that mapping is different (sdb is hd0).  I can't really change my partitions, because sdb1 is a 1.5+ tb partition and I don't have room to backup the data.

Well I found a workaround for my problem.  It's not ideal, but I installed grub to sdb1, which is a home partition instead of sdb2 (my /).

I use the free Unarchiver: http://unarchiver.c3.cx/unarchiver
I have just tested it on a self-extracting Windows Internet Explorer and it opened it first time on my Mac.
However, as you have been told, normally Windows executable files cannot be opened or used on Macs.

  • Can you do a "clean install" after an auto update install of 10.10?

Can you do a "clean install" after an auto update install of 10.10?
    If yes, how?

I suppose it depends on what you define as a “clean install."
You can erase the startup drive and install Yosemite in Recovery.
Boot into Recovery (cmd-r on startup).
From there, use Disk Utility to Erase the startup volume (Macintosh HD).
Quit Disk Utility, then Install OS X.
You should obviously have a backup prior to attempting this.

Delete of hide the existing iDVD application T and all files with "iDVD" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iDVD from the disk it came on originally.

  • IMac won't startup after restore from time machine

After I restore my backup from time machine ( twice ) mi iMac halt at startup and won't startup. It stuck at the apple logo forever.  I also restarted holding down command R safe mode and install OS X and it will startup okay but can't see my buck up files and applications here. Then I restore from time machine again using an earlier backup and it won't startup again. Please any help I will appreciate.

There could be a few reasons for this.
First what version of OS X do you have installed?
What version of OS X is the Time Machine Backup file from?
Did Reinstalling OS X from Recovery install the same version you had before reinstalling?
If you have not changed OS X versions then:
It sounds like there may be a bad file in the backup that is causing the computer to not startup after restoring it. This is especailly true if the computer boots just fine after a fresh installation of OS X, but without the Migrated Data being restored.
If that is the case, then the solution is not a quick one. You have to hunt down the bad file.
Moving Files Manually (Not in Migration Assistant)
Manually access your Time Machine backup folder from within Finder (you should see the backup drive in a Finder Window or on your Desktop). Once open, manually move data from the User folder (documents, music, movies, photos etc.) into their respective folders on the Mac. Reboot after each folder you move to see which folder contains the corrupted file then delete the affected folder/file after reinstalling OS X from Recovery.
If none of the files cause the computer to hang at startup after moving all your User data, then the issue is from within the System or Library folders.
NOTE: DO NOT manually move Applications, System, or System Library files over to the Mac. You can cause major issues with the current installation by doing so. It is safer to just reinstall all the Apps from wherever you got them so they can recreate their support files and such themselves.
    2- Using Migration Assistant
Basically, if you have discovered the affected file. You can just simply delete it from the backup folder.
Reinstall OS X after you have done that, and use Migration Assistant to automatically migrate the data over minus the affected file/folder.
Its a pain in the rear, but it will at least let you salvage most of your data.
Let me know what happens riorec!

  • IMovie won't open after downgrading from Lion to Snow Leopard

Okay iMovie 08' and 11' both worked absoloutly fine on my MacBook Pro (17" Core 2 Duo 2009 model) when I had Snow Leopard installed.
I then upgraded to Lion and iMovie 11' still worked fine but Lion had a lot of bugs so I decided to wipe and install Snow Leopard again. I then used the Migration Assistant to move my Apps from a Time Machine backup to my Mac. Everything worked okay except Java was broken. Everytime I launched a Java application it would say Java 1.5 not found. I managed to fix this with a lot of Googling.
But now I've come across another issue. I noticed that iWeb, iPhoto and iMovie will not open. The icons bounce in the dock and then they finish bouncing and it appears to have loaded, the top menubar says the application name and I can click on File, Edit from the top menu and all the normal options are presented to me. But the main interface of these programs simply does not open. I managed to fix iPhoto by reading online about removing a folder called ProKit.Framework in my Library and that worked for iPhoto perfectly it now comes up and loads like normal. But iWeb and iMovie still do not load. I don't really care about iWeb but I do care about iMovie not working as I use that all the time.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
    So far what I've tried:
    1. Remove all traces of anything iLife releated on my Hard Disk including pkg receipts, cache files, .pref files and so on
    2. Tried just reinstalling the entire iLife suite several times
    3. Tried installing Quicktime 7 from the Snow Leopard Optional Installs DVD
    4. Tried changing colour profiles on my Display (I read this worked for someone else, did nothing for me)
    5. Made a new user account on my Mac and tried to run iMovie from that account, same result it 'runs' but the interface doesn't show up.
Thanks for any help you can provide

I just thought I'd reply to say that I just fixed this by deleting the following folder and afterwards running software update.
    iLifeMediaBrowser in /Library/Application Support
It would appear that if you erase this folder and then reinstall iLife it does something that brings this folder back or recreates it. But if you run Software update after erasing it, it downloads this folder from Apple (about 2.5MB) and that fixes the problem completely.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • PDF files won't open after upgrade from 9 to 10 or 11

After upgrading from Reader 9 to Reader 10, I lost the ability to open PDF files on my Win 7 laptop.  Even the icons became blank white blocks. I reinstalled Reader 9 and it all worked as usual. In trying Reader 11, it happened again.  Any thoughts?

Thank you for your reply. Allow me to clarify.
After installing Reader 10 or 11, the icons for PDFs on my desktop changed from the typical PDF icon to a blank white icon like when the extension of a file has been changed or omitted. Double clicking the icon no longer opens the PDF file. Yes, Reader opens but I no longer was able to open any preexisting PDF files using the new version of Reader. I did try changing away from protected mode to no avail.
I do not have a screen shot as I have downgraded to Reader 9. I have scanned thoroughly for malware and viruses and none have been found.
Thank you again. I look forward to your further comments.

  • C6150 won't print after upgrade from Vista to Win 7

    Hello.
I have a C6150 AIO that worked fine under Vista.  Since I've upgraded to Win 7, I cannot get a printout from any application or the Windows test print.  The HP Solution Center test print works fine.
    -  Printer is hooked up wirelessly
    -  I've installed the latest driver from HP that is supposed to be Win 7 ready
    -  I've also installed the patch they recommend after upgrading from Vista
There is no error.  Print job shows up briefly in the print manager window, then disappears as though it printed.  I'm at a loss, any help would be appreciated.

I hope I have now sorted this problem.....
After numerous atems to install HP Windows 7 drivers & apps and failing I decided to restore the PCs to the day before I first installed the Drivers etc.
Then I unistall HP software and reinstalled the new drivers etc. This I had to do a couple of times on the Laptop (restore 3 days back).
After installing the HP software you can print a test page, print OK. Then goto printer properties and ty to print a test page from there, if this is unsuccessful  restore system and start again.  Most it took me was three attemps.
Now allI have to do is hope that the windows updates dont mess it all up again!
Hope this helps you......... Good luck

  • Installing after reformat?

Hi, Im going to try and keep things simple here because the
    situation is fairly complicated!
Essentially, I need to reformat my PC which has my
installation of Dreamweaver 8 on it. If I reformat and do a clean
install of windows xp, will I be able to install dreamweaver using
my existing product key? With Windows XP, when you clean install it
recognises you are installing on the same piece of hardware and I
was wondering if Dreamweaver and other Adobe/Macromedia worked in
    the same way.
I don't want to attempt to install Dreamweaver and find that
because I have already activated the product it refuses to let me
install it! I cannot uninstall the usual way which I believe would
normally de-activate the software and allow you to install it
again, because my computer is almost completely unusable!
Thanks for any help you can give me.

You should be OK - Dreamweaver8 doesn't have the same
    'activate/deactivate'
system that DW2004 had. I've moved mine from machine to
    machine in the past
    without problems.
Worst case scenario, you may just have to call Adobe and
    prove you own the
software; but I've never needed to do that.

  • Keyboard won't work after  attempted 2.1 install

I have XPSP2 installed on its on HD. I used Boot Camp Beta. When I upgraded to Leopard I installed BC 2.0 and everything worked perfectly. When BC 2.1 was announced, I made sure all firmware and other upgrades were in order and then ran the upgrade as an exe from the desktop. I got error messages concerning the apple keyboard (standard Mac). Subsequent to installation the keyboard would not work at all and Device Manager stated the keyboard drivers were not installed. After several failed attempts, I uninstalled 2.1 and attempted to reinstall 2.0 from the Leopard disc. The keyboard still does not work and Device Manager shows drivers not installed. I tried installing 2.0 and 2.1 in Safe Mode and I can't. I tried to repair the existing XP using the the install disc and that causes an error message. I am at a loss as to what to do.
    Help

I have a similar issue. I updated to 7.1.2 last night. Now my Bluetooth audio doesn't work.
The iPhone appears to be paired with my Bluetooth enabled car stereo, but will not play any music.
Initially the stereo said 'Bluetooth connection failed' but then I disconnected and re-paired; now both the stereo and iPhone say 'connected' but still no audio.
If I press play on the phone or stereo, there's no response.
I can confirm that my Bluetooth keyboard pairs fine and I can type, change the brightness and volume but I cannot pause or play music.
My guess is that there was a change to the iOS Bluetooth Audio functionality. One that's introduced an incompatibility with one or several of the Bluetooth audio profiles: iOS: Supported Bluetooth profiles

  • Samsung 4500 Printer won't print after restoring from Time Machine

My HD drive went down, and was replaced with a new one (1TB).  Restored via Time Machine.  But the printer (Samsung) won't print now.  I get an error that a software update is required.  I tried the System Preferences route; then I went to Samsung and downloaded a driver (once), that didn't work.  I found another note that someone was having a similar problem, and tried this download
    http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCX-4500W
Installed OK, but still no printer.
It worked fine until the software changes (I was using Mountain Lion before and after the HD failure).
But now, I have no printer.
Any suggestions besides buying a new printer?

  • Iphoto won't start after installation from dvd

    Hi.
I installed iphoto 11 from the DVD.
Then, before running it for the first time, I used software update to check for latest updates. I installed them.
Finally I run iPhoto. A window appears telling that if I want to run iPhoto i must install latest version upgrade.
I run software update again but it finds nothing!
    What can I do?
    Regards
    Alberto

Download and apply the iPhoto 9.1 updater and then the 9.3 updater. If that doesn't work delete the application and reinstall it and then go the 9.1 and 9.3 route.

  • Updates marked to be installed after reboot aren't installed

Just installed Solaris 10 on my hp laptop. Downloaded the available updates. After a reboot, there are still two listed to be installed 'after a reboot.' Rebooting again, I see the same thing. Suggestions?

    rpotala,
if you are trying to install OS X onto an erased disk or onto a newly formatted disk, and your Mac originally came from the factory with Lion or newer installed, then you will need Internet access to perform an OS X Internet Recovery.
If your Mac originally came from the factory with Snow Leopard or older installed, then you will need to install Mac OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your Mac.
