Grub2 and the new kernel (3.x.x)

It is recommended to adapt the bootloader to the new kernel. While with grub the procedure is easy, grub2 isn't just as obvious.
I use generated /boot/grub/grub.cfg, so the only editable file should be /etc/default/grub. I can't see where to put new names (vmlinuz-linux, etc.), though.

You don't have to put the new names at all... that's the point behind grub2's update script. Just delete the symlinks in /boot and regenerate your grub.cfg and you're done.

I have trouble understanding the whole deal behind Intel's video drivers and the new kernel. What doesn't work and why? Could someone please try to explain what the problem is in a way so that a newbie like me can understand it?

Intel and Linux are transitioning to a new graphics system. We're in the middle of the transition, so everything's kinda suckish right now. Old kernel and drivers are better, development kernel and drivers are almost as good, and they will get much better soon.

Wvdial and the new kernel 2.6

Hello,
I need to know hows called the /dev/ttyS0 serial port in the new 2.6 kernel, as wvdial reports an Input/output error when trying to dial, and i think this might have changed as the "/dev/hda to /dev/discs/disc0" thing...
Someone knows how are called the /dev/ttyS(0-3) ports now?

The problem its solved, look at the bottom of the thread.
The problem wasnt the port, i had to update pacman/wvstreams/openssl/wvdial/ppp and the kernel to the last versions to make it work (manually downloaded the packages from the ftp and installed throw pacman -A package or -U)

openssl-0.9.7d-1
ppp-2.4.2-1
wvdial-1.54.0-2
wvstreams-3.75.0-1

I made it work 8) i played with modprobe and lsmod until i discovered how to see the available modules, once i managed to do this i loaded:
modprobe ppp_async
As i knew my connection was asyncronic and there where this other options:
ppp_generic, ppp_synctty, ppp_deflate and others in the form of pppoe for ADSL.
Just loading the ppp_async module was enough, as it seems the kernel has ppp_generic built in (this was reported to me at boot time when i included it in rc.conf), and the other two are not necesary for the connection to work, but im loading the three of them (ppp_async, ppp_deflate, ppp_syncttty) at boot time in the _modules_ line in /etc/rc.conf (i left out only ppp_generic) and everything is working pretty well till now.

Mh? I don't see a problem using 0.7.2 ftp install cd. Also not when editing grub file.

iCloud should still help you reduce some hard drive space. Just select "optimize" in the icloud tab in Mac Photo App preferences.
Granted, not the same as completely offloading your library to a back-up drive at your location.

When I downloaded Foxfire the home page came up with "Meet Mozilla Foxfire" then below that it shows "Become a Firefox Expert in 8 Easy Steps". I would like to delete this and in lieu of that show recent highlights and the news. I have no problem with the tool bars they are fine just the home page.

Yes you can copy the content to your new machine and use Home Sharing to keep the content identical
Connect the two machines via an ethernet cable it is 3 times faster than Wifi. Turn wifi off on one machine to enforce ethernet connection
In System Preferences, Sharing turn on File Sharing
Then
Copy the music/itunes folder from the Macbook pro to the music/ folder on the imac
Both machines should now have the same library
Disconnect H the ethernet cable
Set up Home Sharing and under Settings at the bottom of the Home Sharing page. Select to transfer new purchases.
Do the same on the other machine.
Then when you r machines are connected by wifi and each time you start itunes it will transfer your new purchases

which pkg else should I remove?
your kernel. i'd recommend you to do that first:
cp /boot/System.map26 /boot/System.map26.old
cp /boot/vmlinuz26 /boot/vmlinuz26.old
in case of problem with your newly installed kernel, edit the grub entry at boot according to the new back-up names above.
then simply:
pacman -Uf kernel26-snapshot-2.6.31-rc6-git6-i686.pkg.tar.gz
also, why has mkinitcpio been removed? reinstall it before installing your new kernel.

Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be helpful.

Currently I have Netware 6.5.7 SB suite/ has GroupWise.
I want to move to the Linux platform with OES2/NOWS.
The "Boss" wants to keep the current domain: [email protected]
He wants to change it to a new web site domain name:
[email protected]
I already have the web site redirected.
Type in old domain name and it goes to new domain name.
He will however drop the old domain in a few months after all customers make
the change.
I am sure that this happens to many companies that change their domain name.
How can I do this?
Can I use my old server (GroupWise/Netware) with the old domain email
addresses and the new Linux server with the new domain address at the same
time?
Alternatively, could somehow redirect all mail from the old email address to
the new one?
The problem is, I have a lot of email on the older Netware server that I
still need.
Could it be transferred to the Linux server?
Any advice that you can provide will be appreciated very much.

N95 and the New Ford Focus (post 09/08) Sony Bluet...

I have a really annoying problem with my N95 and the New Ford Focus (post 09/08) Sony Bluetooth system. The phone connects no problem at all and I can make and receive calls. Selecting some of the directory information on the Sony system such as phone book or missed calls shows that the Sony system is trying to read these from the phone without much success. Even after 20 minutes it seems to have either hung or states that the function is sometimes unavailable. I would be reasonably happy if this was the only problem I had was experiencing but I find than within 10 - 25 minutes of connecting the phone it disconnects from the Sony system. The disconnection seems to be caused by the Sony Bluetooth system as any other functions such as the CD or USB reset themselves which is itself annoying.
I have tried connecting the phone manually, reducing the items in my address book from 150 to 50 to nothing, pairing, un pairing all to no effect.
The Ford connectivity site says that the N95 is fully compatible from 09/08 no I am struggling slightly to understand what the problem might be.
My O2 N95 version is 21.0.016 which is higher than the version Ford has tested but they also mention that there are no incompatible versions of the OS.
Has anybody else experienced these problems or aware of a fix?

Hi and Thank you for your question, I agree we would not be in this situation if ford and nokia would take customers seriously...anyways what you need to do is first in my country south africa the bluetooth for the focus is not an option at all, then you will be required to buy the kit from ford, which include several items that comes separately e.g the stalk for the steering control that has a voice button, a bluetooth module and a mic and a cable to interlink everything, from there onwards, get someone or yourself to fit the kit in the car once that is done you will then need to go back to your dealership/shop and request then to reprogramme the car with a IDS Machine with the SRM module....please read further for more instructions...
