GS30+Gaming Dock introduced by Le Parisien (France)

Just saw this.
GS30 + Gaming Dock introduced by the french media, "Le Parisien".
Quates translated in English
"To experience the latest PC, it's better to have a powerful computer, a big machine placed on your desk. But it's impossible to carry around with! Luckily, there are more and more small portable PCs which are powerful and light weighted launched by ASUS, Acer or Alienware who recently just introduced its Alienware 13. Interestingly, the brand MSI propose the GS30, a laptop with a <<dock>>, a square dock  where you may put the GS30 on top. This dock reserves a place for 3D graphic cards (extra purchase required). As a result, you may use the laptop itself away from home or multiplying its power by installing the laptop onto the dock and play games at home."

  • MSI GS30 Shadow & Gaming Dock

GS30 Shadow - The Gaming Dock
The GS30 Shadow was just launched at CES, and already there are questions going around, mainly related to the Gaming Dock. For those of you still unfamiliar with the GS30 Shadow, it's a slim 13.3” notebook with a high-end Core i7 CPU with Iris Pro graphics, Super RAID with a bunch of SSDs – with no real gaming capabilities of its own.
The Gaming Dock though, changes all this. You simply dock the notebook into it and through magic (a PCI-E 3.0 x16 connector), you can hook up any desktop graphics to your GS30. The dock holds said PCI-E connector, a bunch of USB ports, a Killer LAN port, audio jacks, a 3.5” HDD as well as speakers in the front panel. The idea is that you have everything plugged in at home (including external monitor(s), keyboard and mouse) and simply pop in the GS30 when you get back home from work or school.
Obviously there are technical limitations as well, that we want to highlight. You can't use the built-in monitor on the GS30, because all PCI-E signals are being sent to the gaming dock when plugged in. This also extends to the keyboard, touchpad and speakers, meaning you must have these separately on your desk. It's sort of the point of the Gaming Dock, using the keyboard on top of the dock would most likely be uncomfortable, but we still want to make it clear.
All in all, we're excited to have launched the GS30 Shadow with it's full-bandwidth Gaming Dock, as it fuses full-powered desktop graphics where you want it (at home) with a properly mobile notebook for the road.

Now the official youtube channel is offering an introducing video
    let's check it out!

  • PC Gamer published one review for MSI GS30 2M shadow with gaming dock

MSI’s GS30, with its Gaming Dock, is the first to actually deliver on the promise of using a normal desktop graphics card bolstering a thin ‘n’ light, non-gaming notebook.—Dave James
    Highlights:
1.You can switch between thin ‘n’ light laptop to gaming desktop in a trice
2.The dock’s connection to the notebook is a full x16 lane PCIe 3.0 socket.
3.It’s a beefy quad-core, octo-thread processor of Intel Haswell ilk running between 2.8GHz and 3.5GHz
4.There’s also a huge 16GB of DDR3 memory inside that little package too
5.With the CPU and Iris Pro graphics it’s a powerful little thing in its own right.

  • Playtech took a look at the MSI GS30 Shadow with Gaming Dock

Playtech, the MSI reseller in New Zealand took a look at the MSI GS30 Shadow with Gaming Dock.
    The overall impression was positive
So.....another MSI notebook to consider .....
my gosh....how difficult to make a purchase decision....
    Quotes
"The GS30 was described as thin and light impressing them with its look and overall build quality. The CPU, 1080p antiglare display, RAM and storage were all high points in the tiny package.
Playtech TV also loved the touchpad and keyboard on the GS30 Shadow making for easy use. The Gaming Dock was easy to use and using both the MSI GTX960 and MSI GTX980 cards to do benchmarks they were thoroughly impressed with the scores across the board.
MSI Dragon Centre, SoundBlaster Cinema and the System Control software were all bonuses making for easy use, overall they felt the laptop was well built with a great screen, keyboard and touchpad. While the entire package was a cool, interesting idea which can be appealing for users who want a super portable notebook during the day and a high performance gaming desktop at home."

Docking is a brilliant idea, but my boyfriend is gamer and an engineer, he is trying to look for independent laptop for its high performance. Does anyone know where can I find independent one from docking?

GS30 Shadow and Gaming Dock internals
The GS30 Shadow is a light, slim machine with a high-powered, high-voltage Intel Core i7 CPU and the usual stuff you find in an MSI Gaming notebook. One thing it does lack though, is a dedicated graphics card, instead it comes with a PCI-E 3.0 x16 connector and a sizeable dock, the Gaming Dock, in which you’ll be able to fit a full desktop graphics card and a few other goodies.
To tell you more about the GS30 Shadow and the Gaming Dock, we’ve created a little video to walk you through the combo and what you can expect hardware-wise.

  • Got my GS30. Fans are loud =(

    Hi,
    New to forum, first post.
Got the GS30 with the gaming dock today (released early in Sweden for some reason, dont know why).
Anyway I was planning to make a full review but now I'm contemplating sending it back instead and dont want to unpack more than necessary.
The reason I want to resend is that the idle fan is annoyingly high. With the computer just sitting beside me doing nothing the fan keep going on and off. The first level is OK but it often reaches second level which is really annoying and every once in a while it goes to 3rd gear and scares the cat... The CPU temp reached 75C at IDLE, that is just not good enough.
The fan-speed is not adjustable in bios or with any included software. I think it could work if the fan was constantly running at a really low speed but as it is set up now it's really disturbing.
I bought the GS30 because I saw it as the best of two worlds. A really powerful ultrabook for work and then a really nice gaming rig for home. I dont want to have a separate comp at home for gaming and I want a portable, silent and fast computer for work.
I will decide in the weekend weither to resend, if anyone has any tips on what can be done about the fan that would be really awsome. (or if MSI has planned to update BIOS or sumthin).
If I do end up keeping the rig I'll unpack and make a review.
Some quick impressions of the laptop itself:
    * really nice keyboard
    * nice build quality overall IMO
    * diodes on the front looks nice but is nothing for the office, hoping that it is adjustable
    * I like the screen (but Im not really picky in that regard)
    Ok.

Wow... You have it already?! nice! I am kinda envy you here
what about sharing some testing pictures or snapshots with us?
It would be appreciated if you do it, thank you very much!

  • CES 2015: New Notebook Launches

A lot of you will be familiar with the new gaming notebooks launched by MSI, as we've already been making some noise about the GT80 SLI Titan as well as the GS30 Shadow beforehand. However, we want to clarify what's what and what's new, going into 2015:
    GT80 SLI Titan
The new top of the range offering, a true desktop replacement with a standard keycap size mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Brown switches. 18.4” 1080P screen with a PLS panel driven by two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M (with plenty of external outputs for higher-res external monitors), and the usual Super RAID features, tons of RAM and even an Intel Core i7-4980HQ if you wish. Plenty of cooling capacity ensures the GT80 stays cool, employing a total of 8 heatpipes, while still keeping the weight down to 4.5kg, which is less than other systems in this size range.
Just like the GT72 Dominator, you're given plenty of upgrade options with the GT80, where you can upgrade SSDs, HDD, RAM yourself, while the graphics cards are upgradable via select service partners around the world.
    GS30 Shadow with Gaming Dock
The GS30 Shadow itself is a very slim and light notebook, with Crystal Well CPUs from Intel and a couple of SSDs in Super RAID. Its built-in graphics comes courtesy of the CPU and Iris Pro, leaving all the graphics power to be provided through the Gaming Dock – connected via a full PCI-E 3.0 x16 docking mechanism, fitting a standard PCI-E desktop graphics card in the dock.
The Gaming Dock also features a 3.5” SATA HDD, USB 3.0, LAN and Audio I/O, so you can leave everything plugged in at home (external monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers) and just grab the GS30 to go when needed.
    GE62 Apache
An all new model to sit below the GT and GS range, the GE62 moves slightly upfield from its predecessor GE60. With NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M and 970M graphics and better cooling, the performance is higher than the one of the GE60, while also being a lot more stylish and contemporary thanks to its new design.
The GE62 also receives a fully backlit SteelSeries keyboard complete with SteelSeries Engine 3.0 as well as a massively improved battery life.

Here come the gaming laptops for the next era! GT80 got swag. Want one!!

  • Best Buy and the Aorus x7

Does BestBuy plan on carrying this awesome looking laptop? I'm in the market for something similar, and really would love to use my BB card and earn some sweet rewards on it!
Here's a link just in case:
    http://www.aorus.com/x7.aspx

holy smokes is that a SLI laptop o.0
I'd hate to see the heat that thing gives off! I would love to see more hi-tech gaming machines introduced to BestBuy. Even though I do have to question why the hard drive is so little for a gaming machine.
I am not affiliated with Best Buy nor have I ever been employed by Best Buy. All of my thoughts and posts are of my own opinion and personal experience.
I may not always know the right answer, but I will always tell you what I do know. I also do free computer analysis and consultation via private message.

  • Icon madness

Every time I think the Mac OS is the best OS in the world it throws a curve and does something totally irrational. Through inattention I managed to drag my home folder and my documents folder out of the dock. So I go to replace them and weird icons appear. The documents folder is no longer a regular folder icon but has pages sticking out the top of it. The home folder reverts to that nasty habit of showing, not the familiar house icon, but a tiny thumbnail of the first document in my home folder as it would appear in list view. This doesn't make any sense but later for that: my question is, how do I convert those icons to regular icons? I tried Finder>View>and unchecked Show Icon Preview, but that didn't work. Can't I just change them back to the way they were?

What you've got is the insane default behavior of folders in the Dock, introduced in Leopard. What you need to do is control click on the icon in the Dock, then you will get a menu, select "Display as Folder" and "View Content as List." Your folder will then be a folder, displaying the folders's icon, rather than the first icon of the contents of the folder (and I always wonder who in the world ever thought that was a good idea), and when you click it you'll get a pop-up list of the contents.

  • My bottom toolbar is now translucent - how do I restore it?

My bottom toolbar is now translucent - how do I restore it to it's former display?

Are you using Mavericks?  Mountain Lion Dock was translucent but Mavericks dock introduced a frost effect which made the dock almost opaque.
This article describes a Terminal command that can restore translucency in Mavericks and how then to restore it back to oaque.  If you are using Mavericks, you can try the latter to get rid of the translucency.

  • My GS30 life with not 1, but 2 docking stations.

Recently I purchased an MS30 with included docking station, plus a spare docking station, plus  GTX 760 + GTX 970 graphics cards.
Reason being, I wanted a superlightweight PC for work with plenty of grunt, that I could use at work and home without having to use 2 seperate machines.
At work I have the unit with the GTX760 with dual screen plus various accessories, and at home the GTX970 single large screen plus accessories.
This system works pretty great, really. There is a slight pause of a few extra seconds on boot when you first connect the main notebook into a dock after it running on the other one, as it has to essentially 'reinstall' the new video card, even though it's been plugged into that dock before. Other than that, everything works flawlessly.
A couple of notes for those considering buying a GS30, from a bit over a month and a half of using it for 8 hours a day at work then 2-4 hours at home :
    - Lots of reviews say the setup is noisy. Out of the box, it is. But you can chop the noise a massive amount by opening the docking station, and looking for a little switch with LOW-MED-HIGH written above it. It's the fan speed controller, and by default it's on HIGH. Switch it to LOW, and in all but the most heavy overclocked load times the unit will be no noisier than any other home desktop machine or even many notebooks.
    - Some complaints in reviews I read mentioned that the inbuilt screen doesn't work when it's docked. This was true, as docking disabled the inbuilt Iris Pro video - however I applied the latest BIOS update v105 which apparently removes that limitation, and it now allows you to use both external monitors and the internal screen when docked. Only complication I've found so far is f.lux doesn't like the dual simultaneous video cards and flickers like mad when it's loaded.
    - Lots of people have said re the GS30 that it's expensive for the performance you get, compared to buying a seperate laptop and desktop. Maybe they're right, but there's something very handy about just having to worry about 1 PC no matter where you are. Plus the boss paid for it
    - MSI - Please add the option to disable the front light strips on both the laptop and the dock! The laptop light pulses in sleep mode, so obviously it's controllable and not hardwired to always be on.
    - Overall, extremely pleased. When I'm at home I can game on a nice 27" screen, I can then undock my notebook and carry on working on the couch  on an ultralight notebook while watching a TV show with my wife, and then plug it in at work and do some extremely intensive calculations - all without the GS30 breaking a sweat.

Looks like I jumped the gun on this one. While the screen worked on the dock for 1 or 2 boots, now it either totally fails to initialise and causes boot issues, or it activates and by doing so disables the video output via the external monitor. Highly annoying. And only problematic since v105.

  • GS30 Dock Availabilty

Bought the GS30 2M Shadow, wich I love to pieces!
Now the issue at hand.. I teach 3D as part of my proffession, and I feel the intel graphics within the laptop itself is kinda low.. So instead of bringing my whole setup to work, I was wondering if there is anywhere to find an extra dock for work?
Hope anyone can help me with this issue, since I have not been able to find it my self.
    - Thomas

The dock is not available separately currently, I'm afraid. It might become in the future, but for now, it's not.
