GSM Phone capabilities on Windows 8.1 Pro system

Is it possible to have GSM phone (voice call) capability on a Windows 8.1 Pro system (e.g. a laptop/tablet with a GSM voice-capable mini PCI-E card such as Option's GTM671WFS)? And how would one go about getting it to work (assuming it is possible)? Is there
even any software that would support such functionality?
I'm asking because I work remote, and while I'm fine with a phone + desktop while at home I'd rather have a single work-device to lug around when on-the-road. As I always have both phone + laptop on me if I'm working, I figured I might as well see
if it would be possible to combine the two.
At this stage I'm considering battery life and other possible drawbacks as being irrelevant.
Anyhow, thanks in advance for any help in figuring this out.

Hello Yolanda,
I think there's been a bit of confusion as to my question. As far as I'm aware of, there's not a single GSM-capable WIndows (7, 8 or 8.1) "Pro" (ie full versions of Windows) tablet or laptop on the market atm (not with voice-call capability - at
least not advertised as such). Obviously, there are phones with Windows Phone 7,8 etc., but that's not what I'm interested in or looking at.
On the other hand, Skype, as far as I'm aware of, is not used to make calls on the GSM network, rather for calls over the internet - which again is not what I'm looking for.
What I'm asking is if it's possible (ie. if the full version of Windows somehow supports) regular GSM-network phonecalls, and if drivers and/or software exists to support this functionality - assuming one were to put in the necessary GSM-voice-call capable/supporting
mini PCI-E card (this being necessary as, afaik, there aren't any systems sold with this kind of card already built in). And, while I've seen such cards for sale, they're usually through wholesalers, (apparently) without drivers (at least not drivers that
I could find), nor have I been able to find software that makes use of such a card.
So, what all this boils down to is: Is it possible to, somehow, use my "full"-Windows laptop/tablet as if it were a regular phone, using the regular phone network, without needing an internet connection. I know - technically - the hardware exists,
but I haven't seen any drivers/software which seems to support it, and as as far as I know it's not built-in functionality in "full"-Windows.
Anyhow, hope this clarifies it.
Regards,
J.B.

How do I add my new iPhone4s to iCloud's "Find my iPhone"? I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?
Thank you in advance for your help.

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

  • I just installed Photoshop CC on new Windows 8.1 pro system and now it wont create new file or open existing files.

Ugh this is so frustrating and I suspect it is an easy fix I am too tired to figure out.
I just got a new PC and installed Creative Cloud and Photoshop CC, logged in and launched Photoshop. It launches fine, no error messages or anything. The tutorial window pops up and I close it. Then if I try to create a new file (the option window comes up) nothing happens after I submit the options. I mean nothing. No error message, no crash, no file canvas nothing. If I try to open an existing file it loads Photoshop as if it is going to open the file and Photoshop loads without any error messages but no file, again nothing.
    Please help.
I am so behind in my work lol.

After three or four tries, it just started working - I didn't change any settings or anything. I was just showing my friend how it wouldn't work and bam it opened a file finally...
    never seen this behavior before...

  • Installing Hyper-v Windows Server 2008 R2 on to Windows 8.1 Pro

I downloaded a 180 day trial hyper-v Windows 2008 R2 version to my Windows 8.1 Pro system.  I have 16 GB of Ram, and my system is an i7-4700HQ CPU @ 2.40Ghz.  Hyper-v manager is running, and I can click action, new virtual machine, and I can
give it a name.  I have chosen to install the virtual machine on my D: drive.  It is an empty 400GB basic partition, except the swap file is located here (system managed).  I used Generation1 for the virtual machine, and gave it a startup memory
of 2000MB, which was suggested on another website.  On configuring the network connection, I left it as Not Connected - plan to change later.  On connecting the virtual hard disk, I was not certain what to do between the 3 selections.  Default,
Create a virtual hard disk, Use an existing virtual hard disk, or Attach a virtual hard disk later.  I chose the default, "Create a virtual hard disk" because it is a new virtual machine.  On Installation Options, I tried the "Install
an operating system from a bootable  CD/DVD-ROM.  The 180 day trial was copied to this CD.  When starting the virtual machine, I received boot failed message, so I deleted the virtual machine in Hyper-v manager and associated folders on D.
I don't know what to do next?  Should I try to import a virtual machine from a configuration file somehow?

You cannot install Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on Windows 8.1  (it sounds like that is what you are trying to do).

You can install Server 2008 R2 in a VM.  Attaching the ISO to the VM and booting should work just fine - or download an evaluation VHD and then attach the evaluation VHD to your VM and boot.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro Sync Center Has Vanished

A few weeks ago I somehow inadvertently turned on a sync setting for a NAS folder that came across onto my small SSD on my Windows 8.1 Machine.
I remember that I was able to turn it off but noticed my SSD in use size was being reported as around +25GB more than what I actually could see on the drive. Having used third party software I could see a offline copy of the folder in question sitting
    on my C drive.
I cannot locate either Sync Center or Manage Offline Files on my Windows 8.1 Pro machine now, I have no idea why as I can see it on another Windows 8.1 Pro system I have.
I have in the meantime using advise on these forums to delete the CSC folder.
Anyone help me locate or reinstall sync center??

If the offline setting is enabled, even you delete the CSC folder, it will be recreated.

  • BUG - client-side iPad keyboard in MRD 8.1.5 is mis-mapped for remote VMware Player console on Windows 8.1 Pro

Client system: iPad 4 running iOS 8.1.1
    Client language/locale: US English
    Client app: MRD 8.1.5
Server system: 64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro
    Server language/locale: US English
Problem: client-side keyboard in MRD 8.1.5 does not work properly within VMware Player 6 console only
When interacting with VMs through the VMware Player 6 console app on the remote Windows 8.1 host, the client-side iPad keyboard for MRD 8.1.5 is not properly mapped. Letter keys and the top-row number keys send function keys or non-standard key scan codes
that aren't used by traditional PC keyboards. The spacebar sends the D key, and some keys send nothing at all. Many other keys work properly, including the client-side numeric keypad, and uppercase letters sent by using the Shift key (but not the iPad up-arrow
shift key). The only way to send the proper keystrokes to VMware Player from MRD 8.1.5 is to not use the client-side iPad keyboard and instead switch to the on-screen keyboard provided by the remote Windows server.
This problem only occurs within the VMware Player console app, and only with RDP connections that use the MRD 8.1.5 client on iOS. I do not encounter the problem with other iOS RD clients such as iFreeRDP by Thinstuff or Pocket Cloud Remote Desktop by Wyse.
    Steps to reproduce:
Connect to Windows 8.1 Pro system from the MRD 8.1.5 client for iOS 8.1.1
Using the client-side iPad keyboard within MRD 8.1.5, bring up the Run dialog by typing Windows-R
Launch Notepad by typing notepad.exe in the Run dialog and pressing Enter on the client-side iPad keyboard
Type some sample text in Notepad until you're confident that the client-side iPad keyboard is functioning properly
Launch VMware Player 6 and start up a VM (mine was Windows Server 2008)
Open the sign-on prompt in the VM by sending Ctrl-Alt-Ins from the client-side keyboard or by pressing the Ctrl-Alt-Del icon in VMware Player
Touch or click in the password field in the VM to ensure it has keyboard focus
Using the client-side keyboard, try to type letters or numbers in the password field, and notice that dots generally do not appear for most keypresses
Switch to the server-side on-screen keyboard and delete the contents of the password field if it is not already empty
Use the server-side on-screen keyboard to sign on to the VM
Inside the VM, open Notepad or some other text editor
Enter text into the editor from both the client-side and server-side keyboards to verify that only the server-side keyboard is functioning properly within the VM
This issue is the only problem I'm having with MRD for iOS, and I hope it is resolved soon.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro join to domain issues....

We bought some Windows 8.1 laptops and purchased the upgrade to the Pro version.  When I attempt to join the laptops to the domain, it prompts me for domain credentials, I enter them, and I get an error....
Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "mydomain.com" failed.
The name will remain "mydomain.com".  The error was:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
Of course, the domain DOES exist and we have plenty of Windows 7 workstations signed into it just fine.  I hit OK then login to the laptop using a domain account.  At this point, I get an error telling me that no logon servers are available to authenticate.
This is a Windows 2008 domain controlled environment.  Everything works fine otherwise for the Windows 7 systems, only these Windows 8.1 systems are having any issues.  The new laptops are even showing up in DNS on the domain controller.
Any ideas what I might be missing?  Is there something special about joining Windows 8.1 Pro systems to a domain?

OK; took a couple of more days than planned to get back on site.  We're continuing to do testing, but here's the IPConfig /ALL that was requested.  10.0.0.1 is the gateway, 10.0.0.10 is the DC.  The laptop is "Me-L" and the domain is "mydomain.com".

    I need advice on this.
    Thanks.

You need to run PowerShell as Administrator. You should be able to do so by right clicking the PowerShell link and selecting "Run as Administrator" as regularly it will be run with regular user privileges.

  • My HP Pavailion 15-n020tu Stuck at Booting in Windows 8.1 Pro when I enable Hyper-V?

    Hi,
I'm using HP Pavailion 15-n020tu Stuck at Booting in Windows 8.1 Pro when I enable Hyper-V. And I have to enable Hyper-V to test my Windows Phone Apps in MS Visual Studio? Mty friend Dell Laptop does not facing this problem with same configuration which I have. Then why me are facing this problem?
    Help Me?
I tried on Windows 8 Pro but again same problem.
So many things I tried updating Windows, Updating drivers but failed.

    Hello @Vikas_Kumawat80,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand that you are looking to enable Virtualization on your notebook computer, and I would be happy to be of assistance!
While I do not have any experience with Virtualization, I do recommend taking a look at this resource on How to Enable and Use Client Hyper-V, as well as Run virtual machines on Windows 8.1 with Client Hyper‑V. I am not certain if this processor has hardware virtualization support, it appears that Windows 8.1 pro and enterprise may have built in capabilities.
If you require further assistance on this, you might have to contact Microsoft on the topic.
    I hope this helps!

  • Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade = No Wifi Network USB N+ "working normally"

    Hello,
I used the Microsoft store to download the Windows 8.1 Pro upgrade.
After I got everything started, there is no WiFi connection.
I don't mean it is having trouble connecting to Wi-Fi, I mean it shows no Wi-Fi at all. The "troubleshooter" only wants me to connect a cable to the network. The wireless signal graph shows a RED X overlaid on it and does not pick up any wifi signals-
not only that, but it does not even LOOK for WiFi signals.
Device manager shows my Belkin USB N+ wireless network adapter as working normally.
Using suggestions from an 8.1 preview problem I have tried disabling/re-enabling, re-installing updated drivers from Belkin.com to no avail. The computer thinks the device is working normally. What the computer thinks the device is supposed to be doing while
    working normally is anyone's guess.
There is nothing wrong with my Wi-Fi. Every other computer and cell phone that uses the connection is fine. This is a Windows 8.1 issue. Please help!
[Someone suggested updating BIOS. Not sure why, the computer was working PERFECTLY until the Windows 8.1 Pro free upgrade. ]
edit: this is 32 bit Win 8.1 (I assume it doesn't upgrade from 32 to 64 bit just because my system is capable of it) on a Zt systems PC with Core2 Quad processor and 4GB Ram if that makes any difference.

I have had the exact same problem as you have.  contacted Microsoft techs but they could not solve the problem at all and had me revert back to windows 8 pro which now recognizes the wireless.  I suggest you go back to windows 8 if you need to
    use the wireless.

  • Windows 7 Professional downgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro OEM

    Hi,
I purchased new computers for a small business with Windows 8.1 Pro OEM licenses and disks. I was intending to install windows 7 Pro using downgrade rights but when I enter the product key that came with Windows 8.1 it gives me an error with "Invalid
    Character".
How can I activate Windows 7 Pro using downgrade rights from Windows 8.1 Pro?
    Thank you.
    André Gomes

You cannot use a Windows 8.1 product key with a Windows 7 installation.  You must "activate by phone" and hold on to speak with a Microsoft Activation
Specialist and explain your desire to invoke your downgrade rights to Windows 7.  The Microsoft Activation Specialist will then review your request and if approved, will issue you an activation code for Windows 7.

  • Activation from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 Pro

I  generally use Windows 7 Home Premium in my Acer 4738Z and my old Acer is broken.
so I buy a new Acer E1-410 (and bla-bla in a nutshell) my new Acer E1-410 can't use Windows 7 it must uses

But FINALLY I can install my new Acer E1-410 in Windows 7 Home Premium (with flash bios to active thier Legacy IDE Boot) and UPGRADE to Windows 8 Pro. (FINISH).
I already ask Microsoft Indonesia by phone to check my product key on windows 8 Pro genuine they said yes it's "only upgradeable" and YES it is genuine.
    and finally these my problem:
They said to I CAN FREELY Upgrade to Windows 8.1 by Microsoft Store
so I wanted to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro to why not ?? You give me free :) ,...
But without any knowledge how to that (My Windows Store doesn't have store icon
to Upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro).
So I google2xxxx  how to UPGRADE to Windows 8.1 Pro
finally I desperate and I download Windows 8.1 Pro ISO (maybe/must be pirate one) from torrent
and fresh/clean install to Windows 8.1 Pro (WITHOUT UPGRADE form Windows 7.1 -> Windows 8 Pro)
OFCOURSE !!! I KNOW IT CAN'T BE ACTIVATE with my older Windows 8 Pro Product Key
    So i ask you :
    1. What are the disadvantages if I NOT activated my Windows 8.1 Pro ?
    2. It's true i can uses all application (on desktop) without any disadvantages ?

    Hi,
There are many limitations when the windows is not activated, for example, personalization settings section is disabled as below:
    The disabled settings include:
•Your lock screen wallpaper and apps
    •Start Screen color and background
    •Your account picture
You need to activate Windows before you can personalize your PC and every couple of hours, you'll see a full-screen activation request:
The application is available to use, but I suggest to run the genuine Windows and activate it, because it is legally protected.

  • Clean Windows 8.1 Pro install over Windows 8.1 SL

    Hi,
I have a Lenovo H520g desktop, which came with Windows 8 Single Language installed. The machine is currently updated to Windows 8.1 Single Language.
As I am a software developer, I need to use Windows 8.1 Pro, because the SL version doesn't have Hyper-V, which is necessary to run the Windows Phone SDK emulator.
For the reason explained above, I would like hear the advice of an official Microsoft representative on the matter discussed on this topic.
I do know I can update from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Pro by using the "Add features to Windows 8.1" item on the Windows 8.1 Control Panel and buying the Windows 8,.1 Pro Pack. Nevertheless, I prefer buying the full retail version of Windows 8.1
Pro on a DVD from a local Microsoft reseller. I need a quick way to restore my machine in the case of a HDD failure and having the full retail DVD is definitely the best way to do that. If I upgrade by buying the Windows 8.1 Pro Pack, should my HDD ever failure,
I'll have to do the Lenovo restore procedure (which would restore the computer to Windows 8 SL), then upgrade to Windows 8.1 and only after that I could apply the Windows 8.1 Pro Pack.
My question is: will I be able to do a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro on my computer? Of course I'm aware I'll have to delete the partition Windows 8.1 is currently installed on. No problem with that.
But what about the license key? I've read that computers that come with Windows 8 pre-installed have the Windows license key embedded on the BIOS. Will I be able to start the standard Windows 8.1 Pro installation from the DVD and use the license key that comes
    with the DVD?
It's very important for me being absolutely sure I'll be able to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 Pro on my Lenovo desktop. The Windows 8.1 Pro full retail DVD is rather expensive here in Brazil (about US$ 320).
    Cheers,

    Hi PauloBR1,
If you upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro by Windows 8.1 Pro Pack, you can use
System Image Backup feature to backup your system. Also, you can use this feature to restore your system quickly.
    In addition,britishdhez is right.
We can use the Retail license key to active the Windows 8.1 Pro.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro Crashes When Enabling Hyper-V

So I bought a new HP Envy Desktop specifically for Windows Phone Development and ironically I can't get Hyper-V running. The machine just hangs on startup and eventually Windows 8.1 Pro x64 just crashes after multiple attempts after enabling Hyper-V in Windows
Programs/Features.  It's a Intel i5 with 12GB of RAM and virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.  I've read through multiple threads over the last several days and tried the following:
    - Updating all local drivers and Windows updates
    - Disabling Bluetooth
    - Uninstalling Avira AV
    - Someone also suggested disabling USB 3.0 support but I don't see an option to do this in my BIOS.
I've wasted a lot of time on this and I would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks

    Hi ericvanburen,
I found similar issue with HP Envy Desktop in HP forum , it might be due to blue tooth driver .
And I quoted the genneral solution here :
    1. Enter into BIOS setup and set Virtualization as disabled and reboot system.
    2. After booting windows 8, enter into Control panel and remove bluetooth driver.
    3. Download and install Ralink Bluetooth driver version 9.2.101.10 (SP59632)
    4. Reboot system and enable Virtualization Technology again.
