GT680R GPU overheating/ Random freezes/crashes

Hey thanks in advance for any help. I bought this laptop a little over a year ago, and most of the time it has be great. Every once in a while though I would be playing a game and the system would freeze up to the point that it would require me to force power down. Understandable, most likely was doing something stupid anyway. I reduced the graphics quality, and things worked again. Then while playing graphics intensive games after a few minute FPS would drop to an unplayable level I would alt-tab out and wait for things to cool down and then be good to go for another ten minute. Shitty but normal usage still worked, and maybe my computer just can't handle skyrim. The last few weeks however every time I try to play a round of lol, the temp of my GPU reaches >104°C causing my laptop to shutdown. Okay maybe I shouldn't play games on this PC at all;, Unfortunately when left on for long periods of time(over night) with nothing major running, the computer shuts it self down.
I do not think my symptoms are caused by viruses, I've run both Comodo and Mbam, with no result, and reformatted the laptop with no change. I am quite worried of the direction that things seem to be going, and would like some advice on how to proceed. I have been thinking about opening it up and checking for dust and fan blockage, but am new to the hardware side of computers (was a macfag). Sorry for the wall of text
my specs are MSI GT680R
Intel Core i7-2630QM
Nvidia Geforce GTX 460M 1.5 GDDR5
RAM DDR3 8GB(4GB*2)
TL;DR progressive crashes, framedrops, overheating( advice needed)

just cleaning dust out of it aint enuff to do the trick. apply new thermal paste, since its getting 104C plus then your thermal paste on gpu n cpu prbly dried out. go to nearest pc store and grab a some mid priced thermal paste and watch an instruction on how to apple thermal paste from youtube or read some forum about. when you just clean the dust out of your nb it will prbly drop max 10 decrees and apple new thermal paste to both cpu and gpu. it can drop 20-25 degrees. ITS advised to apple new thermal paste to both CPU and GPU once a year.  In addition, get  DUAL fanned nb cooler with 120mm or bigger fan
Well I opened it up and there was nothing, no dust no jammed fans, so I'm just trying to figure out the RMA system since I'm still under warranty. But it does sound like the thermal paste dried out.

  • Random freezes/crash - help please!

my macpro randomly freezes (spinning beachball) it happens using FireFox, iTunes etc. I'm unable to force quit the apps and I have to "crash" the computer. I ran "memtest" - checked out ok. I ran AHT - ok too.
I've read that usb devices can cause this problem (I have a Mbox2 for ProTools) but I need my usb devices (who doesn't?) I've found older posts with this problem - but I can't find a solution. Does 10.4.9 address this problem? (I haven't upgraded yet - awaiting ProTools qualification) any help would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks in advance
MacPro 2.66   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   3 gig of ram

If you are old like me, that is a high probability :>). But, it could be that Apple, when they shipped you your Mac Pro, used the delta update to get you to 10.4.8 and not the combo update. Several that post here are adamant that one use the Combo, so much so, that I have adopted that methodology. The download is not that much larger, and after the rush ceases, I install over the delta I got from Software update. It seems that issues are resolved from doing things that aren't related. But that seems to be a life constant..... for me anyway. The Combos can't hurt and are worth a try :>)

  • MacBook Pro randomnly freezes/crashes

I have a client (I'm a local tech just getting crash courses in Macs) who's MacBook Pro randomly freezes/crashes. I have ran a disk repair but the issue still persists. He has sent me quite a few different crash reports which I can't make heads or tails over really. They are really long - should I post them for assistance or is there any usual troubleshooting steps needed to be done?
I will post one, but all seem to vary and don't appear to be the same issue...
Please, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Chromium random and frequent freezes/crashes with KDE

    Hello folks,
as sated on the topic I keep on getting random and frequent crashes with either Chromium and Chrome with KDE 4.13.3.
The freeze/crash doesn't happen when doing a specific task and can occur at anytime.
The way it happens is that Chromium freeze up and than if I minimize the window and maximize it again the Chromium window just disappears and at that point all I can do is killing it manually.
The wiki suggests that libcanberra-pulse is the reason that cause those freezes and should be removed, however after a quick look up into the system it doesn't seem that I have it installed.
    [latrina@chromebookC720 ~]$ sudo pacman -Q |grep libcanberra
    libcanberra 0.30-4
Here's the output of the crash .
    Thanks

I will reply to myself.. I am not sure anymore that this is an issue that has to do specifically with KDE, since according to this guy it might be something related with libglx.
A quick look at my Xorg.0.log tells me that glx is loaded correctly.
    [ 302.233] (II) LoadModule: "glx"
    [ 302.234] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so
    [ 302.235] (II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
I am going to shoot a noob question here, is this a generic open source driver or do I need a specific one for my graphic card? I do have a intel i915.
Also what's the package that handles libglx*? I'd try removing it and install it again. I mean until yesterday I had Chrome and Chromium perfectly working on Arch and the same kernel, than I had to replace the ssd with a bigger one and I decided to start from scratch with just what I needed, and here you have it both Chrome and Chromium miss behaving ..

  • Intermittent random freezing (mid 2012 MBP)

For the past year or so my Macbook Pro (mid 2012) has suffered from random freezes which require a hard reset.
Often these will occur only roughly once a week, but in the last couple of days (incidently since updating to 10.9.3, although such bursts have occured in the past and then settled down) it has been happening 4 to 5 times a day, getting to the point of being seriously disruptive.
I have, over the past few months, made several attempts to find the cause in vain. I am an experienced Mac user with a good understanding of computers, and I've never found a problem so mysterious to me. I'll break down first the symptoms and then what I have done to tye and find the cause.
Symptoms: Normally I will first notice that web pages aren't loading, but I can switch apps without problem. However, if I try and close an app or open another, that app then starts to hang. Progressively, everything starts to hang and I can no longer even switch apps, and everything gives me a spinning beachball. Eventually, even sound/music cuts out. Only a hard reset (holding down the power key) saves it.
Diagnosis: I have run all types of hardware checks, from apple's built in tests (fsck), RAM tests such as memtest, and third party testing suites which have checked the HD, RAM, CPU, GPU etc. All of them have come back 100% clean. I have repaired permissions, which also has no effect.
This made me think it could be a software issue. However, the crashes display no discernable pattern, and are completely (as far as I can see) un-reproducible. They have occured while I have been using a wide range of apps, and don't seem to be triggered by any particular action; e.g. they can occur while I am blankly reading a webpage or a pdf document. Further, the console shows absolutely nothing. The log messages appear completely normal, sometimes there are even no messages corresponding to within several minutes of the crash.
I haven't been able to verify if it is restricted to my user name, since generally the crashes are so intermittent I would have to use another username for several days, if not weeks, to really check this - something than is not practical given that I need the laptop to work on.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the issue, or anything further I could try to diagnose it? I am reluctant to take it to an applestore, as it is out of warranty and I can't think of any tests they could try that I have not.

An Apple store genius bar appointment and evaluation is for FREE!  You have no idea what type of tests they may have, so make an appointment.
Thanks for pointing that out. Until very recently I lived in a country where there are no Apple stores nor Genius bars, so I wasn't aware of that.
I've tried safe boot, but as I said the problem is intermittent enough that it's not clear if it helps, and working continuously in safe boot to see isn't really an option.
No - there are no kernel panics, just the unexplained freezes.

  • IMac Freezing/crashing, please help. Tried everything! :(

    Hello Fellow MacTalkers,
I am writing this post to ask you for a help with an issue that is very frustrating to resolve.
To begin with, I have purchased my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHZ, 3GB, Leopard running notebook about 7 months ago.
Until recently I have discovered that my computer is crashing randomly.
I am not a very tech oriented person, who knows much about console, logs and sorting out the hardware / software related issues.
About 2 months ago I started to experience some random freezes on my computer. Those freezes were occurring on different type of situations so it was hard for me to identify what could be causing the problem. The most common freezing that I have encountered, was and is that my computer screen just freezes and I can't perform any reset or rescue. Simply hard reset.
I started to think that this could be a cause of getting an extra 1GB memory that I purchased from Apple store, and that the memory could be faulty. But just to make sure I have done a clean re-instal of my os. making sure that I have all my permissions everything that could be a "common" cause of any weird behaviors on a mac sorted.
After the reinstall it got even worse.
I decided to take my computer to Apple authorized centre in Sydney broadway NextByte shop.
I explained the problem, asked if that would be possible to check some sort of console logs and track back what could be the cause of the problem that I am experiencing.
I left my computer for 2 weeks in service. And after that 2 weeks they have replied to me saying that they have detected no faulty with the hardware what so ever. I keep on persisting that I understand that the service people have done all the tests on external peripherals, checked the system performance through some kind of testing tools and it resulted with no problem. I rang the Apple complaints department asking if they could do anything about it as I am very worried that this issue won't disappear. They have informed me that there is nothing thay can do and they are basically sending my back home.
I collected my computer 2 days ago and started setting up some programs like adobe and all my apps. At first it was running all well, but then it started (leopard or hardware) to freeze again. On no particular occasion. I had to crashes in 3 hours.
I remembered the time of the crash and after the reboot, I checked my console and here is what I could find:
    12/05/08 11:00:07 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10b260.mdworker[1036]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault
I don't know if that is related to this post in any way, but as I said at the beginning I have no technical knowledge on where to investigate it further.
I would like to ask you for your recommendation on what should I do next.
I hope there is nothing that I am doing wrong with my computer as I am keeping it organized nad well maintained.
I thought also that that could be overheating related issue so I bought a notebook cooler, but that doesn't seemed to resolve the problem.
I am running out of ideas. Apple won't help me in solving the problem, I am also not sure how should I approach this case from the legal perspective. Can I go to fair traiding institution and ask them for help to enforce apple on returning my money for laptop, should I perform any tasks on my computer to fix the problem with some software.
Help, I am really running out of ideas. I am doing graphic design daily and this problem is driving me crazy.
I would appreciate your feedback or any suggestions on what should I do next.
Sorry for my cracked english. Im still learning my lingo in Australia
PLEASE PLEASE, help me on this one.
    Kind Regards,
    Michael Saganowski

For what its worth, it sounds like the Leopard woes I was having before I left and went back to Tiger. I was in leopard for three months and I had too many problems to list here, but some common ones were Random system freezes/crashes (especially in itunes coverflow), Finder freezing, Adobe CS3 crashing and being generally buggy, not being able to run Final Cut Pro and After Effects at the same time.
My advice to you, check your memory if you feel like it could be the problem. If your memory is OK, then wait for the 10.5.3 update which is supposed to be out really soon (like within a couple of weeks or so from what I hear.)

Since I built this system, I've been getting random freezes that force me to have to manually power off and back on the entire system.  I have no idea what's causing it and I've tried everything under the sun that I can think of to resolve it to no avail.  I posted about this a while back in another forum, but I'm hoping I'll have better luck here.
    Symptoms:
Entire system will completely freeze.  No input is recognized, keyboard controls do not function (numlock, caps lock, etc.), cannot switch to another TTY, nothing.  There appears to be no rhyme or reason to when the freezes occur.  Sometimes the machine will be sitting idle and freeze in the middle of the night and I'll come in in the morning and find it frozen, other times I'll be in the middle of using it and it will freeze (as just happened).  Every time I have to hold down the power button to shut off, then turn it back on.
    What I've tried so far:
    Swapping out all the RAM
Completely wiping the entire system and re-installing from the ground up (twice now I've done this)
Unplugging various USB devices and seeing if leaving those unplugged helps (it does not).
I'm at my wits end.  This has been going on for months and I have no idea what to do at this point. This is the most stumped I've ever been.
The thing that drives me the most nuts is that I have an almost *identical* system at home (the one that's freezing is my work computer).  Same CPU, same motherboard, same SSD partitions and layout, virtually the exact same software installed as well.  The only differences are a different GPU, different band of RAM, different brand of SSD, and a different case.  The specs from my home computer are in my signature and I can provide exact hardware info on the work system if anyone thinks it'll help.
I'm willing to provide whatever information anyone can suggest to help troubleshoot the issue.  I've got a bunch of log output from journalctl from various times it's crashed, but I haven't been able to make sense of it with regards to finding patterns or useful troubleshooting information.  Below is the most recent log from a few minutes before and after the crash.  You'll see the reboot at 17:51:40
    (sudo journalctl --since 17:45:00)

My thinking is that Plasma is not "playing" nicely with nvidia, I have two systems in my pc, one with kde4 and the other one (my testing system) with plasma, kde4 runs as it should, no lags, no freezes, no redrawing problems, fast and smooth. My plasma system is really not there, I tweak both systems the same, 20-nvidia.config on the xorg.d folder created by the nvidia settings, same where I also tweak all settings to juice my video card to its fullest (a really weak one by the way, a fanless gt430) and the triple buffering enabled for kde. I do have freezes with Plasma that lock the whole system, no keyboard input, and its been more or less the same since its release (for me that is), I am keep waiting to see if the "next" release would do, 5.3 still not yet. I also notice that compositing effects makes things worst, for example, snapping a window to a corner or to maximize when wobbly effect is on is a sure shot for a freeze for my system, I just update today the linux kernel and the nvidia driver, would see if that helps a little. My advice, for a stable system stick to kde4 still.
Edit: Note, I have a good old amd phenom 6 cores and I always run it with some over-clocking, never have issues with that on my previous install or my main system.

  • RMBP freezing / crashing (not chrome related)

Hi, about 3 weeks ago my rMBP started to freeze randomly and i couldn't find anywhere on the internet nothing related to that, only the chrome / mountain lion conflicts, but... i'm not using google chrome, so why's that? This last freeze I got the log from the moments between the freeze, i'm hoping anyone here could help me with this by looking at the reports. thanks!

This frequently occurs becasue it is being used someplace else.  It could be Bridge that is trying to build the cache, or it could be Windows indexing files.  Many turn Windows indexing off for this reason.
    2.  Freezing / Crashing.  I have never experienced photoshop freezing or crashing as much as I have with this update.  This happens during save (when it actually does save.) Though it only happens rarely, it happens enough to get me into some trouble when I loose all the work I have done since the last save.  (Happened 4 times in about 16 hours of use)
Are you saving over a network?  Best to save locally and copy to network.
Also, CS6 puts a lot of stain on GPU driver.  For ATI the best driver is 12.8 and 13.3 v 6 beta (not sure if this is out of beta or not).  The ones inbetween are not so good.
Note, if PS crashes it will save a copy on scratch disk if you have this option turned on in preferences.
If it actually crashes, as opposed to freezing, check out the Event Log and look for Faulting Module.

  • Random Freeze

Hey Everyone I have a MacBook Pro 17" from Mid 2009 that is suffering from random freezing. I have tried re-installing the OS on several versions to try resolve the issue but this did not work. I am currently running Mac OSX 10.6.4.
    What happens is this:
The computer will randomly begin to slow down and then gradually stop and freeze. If music is playing it begins to stutter and repeat, like what you get when a CD jumps in a CD player. All senesces become unresponsive such as the keyboard, the ambient light sensor, trackpad etc. I did try to close the lid to hibernate but nothing happens it continues to remain frozen. I even tried plugging/unplugging the power adapter.
To solve the issue I have to hard reboot, by holding down the power button.
The issue happens completely randomly, maybe a few times a week if not more. I have noticed that programs randomly crash too or freeze, especially Safari 5.
Any ideas and what it could be or what I could do?
    Thanks!
    Nick

I believe i located the problem, my eyes are so tired right now! :s
i was searching all over the net and installing all my info a apps back to the system when i noticed my CPU is running at 14% - 17% max but the temperature is at 75 degrees celsius and the only thing i do now is transferring stuff over the network and from my previous time machine backup...
so i believe is something with the temperature sensor 50% or the CPU cooling 95%.... I will note the behavior and run to the service point tomorrow to ask them to fix it...
Download iStat Pro widget "its free" and run few apps heavy apps that use the processor heavily... see if something happens from your dashboard... i will finish my transfers now and run a benchmark test to stress the CPUs and GPU at the same time...
I feel so sad for both of us because a 1 year old MBP is doing such problems...

  • 8800 GTX Randomly Freeze, Sound Continues (Card verified to be the issue)

So I just built a new system a few weeks ago:
MOBO: MSI P35 Platinum Rev 1.1
    Video: MSI NX8800GTX-T2D768E-HD OC
Core: Intel e6850 Core 2 Duo
    Case: Antec P180 Case
PSU: Antec True Power Trio TP3-550
So I can play a game for maybe 2 or 3 days straight(for hours on end), no problems at all.
Then out of nowhere, I get freezing after maybe 5 - 20 minutes of play.
The freeze is a full-video freeze, but the sound continues to play in the background.
I can't alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete out of it, though I can ping the computer from a different box. There is no BSOD or error message of any kind.
The only way to get out of it is to hit the restart button on the computer.
After I restart the computer, and game, I play for another 10 minutes and get another freeze.
The cycle just continues after that, freeze after freeze.
The next day, I try to play again...and once again no freezes at all for several days.
I am using NVIDIA 162.18 drivers, but I have tried some older and newer ones.
This is on a fresh Windows XP Pro SP2 install, with newest drivers, and a few games.
I am under the assumption that the TP3-550 is plenty to run this video card.
It has the 2 six-pin PCI-E leads, and the motherboard accepts an additional 12V molex for additional power.
I also assume that if power was the issue, the freezes would occur at a regular interval.
What could be the issue? How do I go from no freezes at all one day, to every 15 minutes the next? I am thinking driver issues, but this card has been out for quite some time.
I've had the freezes occur in Company of Heroes, Fable, and Warrior Within
GPU Temp is running at 60 idle, 71 - 74C under load.
Though I have had it crash at 61, and 72 so I don't think that temp is the factor.
I know people sometimes have issues with the 8800 series freezing. It just irks me that it works great for days at a time, then randomly freezes.
Do I RMA it? Or just deal with the occasional freeze?

    Ok,
I now have 2 things. A better description of the problem, and results from a different machine.
I tested my 8800GTX(factory OC settings) on an AMD single core processor, Asus Mobo, and an Antec TP3 - 650 power supply (the same power supply as mine, but 100 more watts).
I ran human head on his box and encountered the exact same result (as below) within 5 minutes.
The nature of this freeze is as follows.
    1. Running human head for 5 - 30 minutes at factory settings, causes the crash to happen 100% of the time.
    2. Randomly, I will hear the audio pause for a second or two, and the graphics freeze immediately.
    3. The music than starts back up, and continues to play, but the graphics remain frozen.
    4. The mouse can be moved around the screen, and hitting the cntl-alt-del combo causes the mouse arrow to turn to an hourglass.
    5. The hardrive lights continue to flicker.
    6. 2 to 3 minutes later, I get a BSOD with a minidump, and the system immediately reboots.
I have yet to analyze the minidump, but I assume that it will be irrelevant.
What irks me is that I was able to verify this issue on 2 systems at this time, and I have already RMA'd the board to msi once. They were not able to verify it, though they say that they ran 3Dmark06 on it over several passes.
My problem is that 3Dmark allows pauses between tests, which may clear the memory, or allow it to cool, or whatever it does. Human head does not have this feature.
So now I have to pay for the shipping, and basically demand a new one, whether or not they can verify it using 3D mark.
The only other thing I can guess is that the True Power 3 550(and possibly the 650), is not powerful enough to power this card.
I would think that the 2X 18A(and 2X 19A on the 650) would be enough though, and my friend was running his test on much lesser system.
I'm out of options, and hope that I am not stuck with this faulty card.

  • Pavilion Elite e9180f freezes, crashes, BSOD

I am one of the many unhappy customers who bought this piece of junk (Pavilion Elite e9180f) and waited too long to return it because in my naivete, I thought it was some kind of simple software issue.  Nope!  It's definitely something wrong with the hardware, because the freezes and crashes have been happening since day 1, right when I took the thing out of the box.
Yeah, the system is fast and runs Windows Vista great, when it's actually WORKING, which is usually only guaranteed for about the first 5 minutes after you power the system on and boot windows.  After that, it's just buying time before it crashes again.  Forget trying to get anything done on this computer.  Forget about asking this PC to play a video or music file without the files "stuttering" during playback.  Even my 7 year old Sony Vaio which is running XP can handle playing an MP3 file without stuttering and crashing!
Like everyone else, the freezes and crashes happen either one of two ways:
    1) The machine begins to "stutter", stutter more, then freeze/crash.  When I say stutter, I mean I move the mouse, the pointer graphic will hesitate on the screen and lag behind.  If you start to play a video or music file, this manifests in an audible "stutter".  The stuttering gets worse and worse as minutes pass until eventually it freezes for good, blasting that 1/50th second moment of audio into infinity.  You have to reboot immediately if you don't want to go deaf or be driven mad.
    2)  I will be doing nothing at the time (example, I close all programs out and leave Windows sitting on the main desktop screen), I'll walk out of the room for a minute, then come back and find I can't move the mouse. This system will often lock-up without any warning!
Sometimes I'll get a BSOD or error screen, sometimes I won't (in which case your only option is to do a cold re-boot.)  When I do get the BSOD, the error is ALWAYS the "did not get a response from the secondary processor" yada yada.  I wish HP would just admit they shipped this model out with a bad processor/motherboard/whatever and do an official recall.  I have owned PCs for the last 13 years and this is the worst and most consistently disappointing experience I have ever had.
What is the hardware issue?  Which part is the lemon part?  The motherboard?  The processor?  The BSODs seem to indicate a bad processor.  I do have the Pegatron Truckee version 1.03 motherboard.  Is that the problem?
P.S.  I have contacted HP on many occasions about this, literally stayed on the phone for hours with "customer support" (according to one HP rep, 80% of their customer service reps are based outside of the United States...good luck getting any "technical" help from them) to no avail.  I did talk to one nice tech support guy in Canada who said "it sounds like your unit has a bad processor", so he had HP send me a box to ship my unit to their repair center so they can replace the processor.  However, I have also had HP reps tell me it could be anything from the memory to the hard drive.  Multiple HP reps claimed to me that they have "received no complaints" about this system.  One guy told me he "thought he got an email last week" regarding "something" about the system, but couldn't remember what it was and he put me on hold while he searched for the email.  He never found it.  What a joke.
EDIT:  Just to clarify, the crashing issue has been happening since day one, but initially I thought it was an issue with Vista.  I had never owned or used Vista before, so I thought maybe Vista was just unstable.  Nope.  I know several people who own Vista and have never experienced these issues.  I have downloaded every update from Microsoft/Windows Update.  I have upgraded to Vista SP2 with all the latest drivers and software for all of my hardware.  No luck.  It is definitely a hardware issue.  Thank god HP's warranty is good for 1 year (I bought my Elite in July).
Message Edited by Doonyman on 09-24-2009 02:58 AM

Unfortunately I have to add my disastrous encounter with HP's E9180F a true lemon HP is selling. I must take some responsibility for not carefully researching this model before I purchased, but I trusted the HP name and got stung- big time.
    The scoundrel  :
HP and its Pavilion Elite e9180f
    Windows 7 64bit
motherboard - Pegatron  Truckee ver 1.03
    BIOS ver  5.22Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
    Memory 9206 MB Ram
As so many others have reported my HP E9180f started locking up and going to BSOD right out of the box. My first freeze-up came when I was doing the Windows update process. At first I didn't think much about it but I started getting random freezes a couple time a day. At that point I went online to see if others had experienced the same problem and perhaps had a fix. What I found was very troubling;  I found extensive documentation describing my exact problems and what was really horrifying was the reports of how ridiculous HP's help services were treating people with the problem. At first I didn't totally believe what I was reading on HP's own customer forum; I do now.
    ·         I've went through the total recovery process three times now, HP techs have spent hours remotely running my computer, (yes it did lock up on them to)
    ·         I had to upgraded the BIOS. (HP tech tried, said he had, but he hadn't)
    ·         I was directed to clear the BIOS (luckily for me I had the tools
    ·         Updated all drivers again and again.
    ·         Next I was asked to remove the video card, memory, and motherboard power cable and reseat them. I declined because I didn't want to give HP any reason to void my HP 2 year House Call Care Pack which covers this unit. When I invited HP to send a service tech out to perform these tasks, they said that house call only covers part replacement, we weren't replacing a part. I couldn't believe what I was told. Are you feeling my frustration?
Keep in mind that each time HP requests that I make changes, they then ask me to test the system, which I did and each time with the same result, BSOD
I'm heading into my fifth week of working with HP to fix this problem. and I still haven't even been able to get my case moved up to a senior case manager, what a joke HP's help process is.
     One conversation I loved was;
HP tech: "I'll have a senior case manager call you within 24 hours."
Skeptical me: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    Silence, no response.
Me again: "What should I do if I don't get a call?"
    HP tech: "That's an impossibility."
Guess what? The impossibility became reality (I bet you guessed) .
HP's last stall tactic was to have me fax them my proof of purchase and invoice and call back in 24 hours. Where have I heard that before? Apparently nothing can go forward until they receive it. So I faxed them the stuff within 10 minutes, and when I called back 24 hours later, guess what, you're right it wasn't on their system yet. I asked couldn't I be escalated to a senior case manager  (it's apparent that only a senior case manager can do anything). "No," was the tech's reply, "call back again later".
Please if anyone out there knows the secrete to getting a senior case manager, or an HP tech support number here in the U.S. so I can get this thing fixed I'd love to know it.
    Fast becoming HP never again.

  • Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

    Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

    I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
    Problem solved!
    Edit:

I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.
    Thanks guys!

  • 13" Macbook pro random freezing after upgrading hard drive.

    i have a 2010 mbp 13" 2.4
I upgraded the hhd from the 250 to a 320 5400 RPM drive i cleared the cache did a clean install of osx 10.6 grabbed all the updates and then rolled my time machine to restore all my files.
But now it randomly freezes for about 4-7 seconds. It's extremely annoying and i can't figure out why. Short of a clean install any ideas on what might fix this?
    Thanks

The AHT does test the graphics chips. Run the extended version and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. Also, there may be a crash log in Console. Try to run something processor intensive so the Mac freezes, and then run the AHT. Heat could be a factor.
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, make an appointment at the Genius Bar and bring in your Mac for evaluation. They would probably have a more comprehensive hardware test they could run. If you get any error codes, bring those along.
It sounds like you could have some sort of hardware problem here. Since you are under warranty, it might be time to let Apple diagnose and fix it. It sounds like you may have had video issues during the first week of ownership with the original hard drive, and these may actually be independent of the hard drive.
    Good luck!

  • MSI P35 Neo-F (MS-7360): Computer randomly freezes while playing games

    Hi there,
I have reached the end of my technical knowledge right now and I'm not even sure if this area of the forum is appropriate. The problem:
While playing higher-end games like Crysis 2, Anno 1404, Mass Effect 2 etc. my computer randomly freezes and the last few milliseconds of sound are being looped on my speakers (kind of like a buzzing sound).
By "freezing" I mean that my computer becomes unresponsive to any action other than pressing the Reset-Button or holding down the Power-Up-Button (no reaction to Ctrl+Alt+Del, Alt+F4, Alt+Tab, no mouse movement... you get it).
There's no exact timing as to when these freezes occur. The fastest freeze happened after less than a minute of playing a game, slowes one (just today after switching to my newer case with better cooling) took about 2 hours.
This freeze only occurs while my System is under load. No freezes while browsing the web, using office programs, listening to music or watching videos.
    System Specs:
        Mainboard: MSI P35 Neo-F (MSI-7360)
        CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600 @2.4GHz
        RAM: 4x 1GB DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2
Graphics: Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti, 1GB GDDR5 VRAM
PSU: Antec High Current Gamer 620W (upgraded from Xilence XP600, 600W)
New CPU Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13 Pro (upgraded from OEM Intel Boxed Cooler)
New Case: Zalman Z9 Plus w/ 4x 120 mm Fans (Upgraded from a Case with only 1x 250mm side Fan)
        2 Western Digital HDD (1x 2TB, 1x320 GB)
1 DVD Reader/Burner (unimportant for that error I guess)
        OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit
        2 Screens: 1x 24" Asus VS248H and 1x 21" LG Flatron Wide W2240T
Since this error is bugging me for quite a while now and since this is not the first forum I'm trying to get help from, here's a list of steps i already took to get rid of it, obviously to no good use:
reinstalled games where the freeze occurred
updated all Drivers (including cleaning old versions in safe mode; also tried older drivers)
        updated BIOS to v1.A0
        Reinstalled Windows
bought new Case and CPU Cooler to improve Air Flow/Cooling
checked Seating of all components (took out, cleaned, reapplied thermal grease where neccessary, re-inserted)
cleaned old case of dust (obviously no problem in the new case, which is 2 days "old")
ran 7 sequences of Memtes86+ without any errors
ran Prime95 without any errors for about 45 Minutes
ran Furmark for 15 Minutes under full load (burn-in test) without any problems, even though my graphics card hit the 100°C frequency-cut level
ran Furmark and Prime95 simultaneously without any problems
took records of component temperatures and system voltages without noticing anything unusual (at least not after i switched to the newer PSU, which is about 1 Month old - yet didn't resolve the problem)
tested with cyclic removal of 1 RAM device to further rule out RAM malfunction
tested with only 2 RAM devices in dual channel mode (Slots 1 and 3)
tried to reduce RAM clock (800 MHz --> 667 MHz) to no avail
checked S.M.A.R.T. values of HDDs, no issues reported
        tested without any background programs
raised/lowered voltages to RAM, CPU and Chipset in BIOS to increase logic circuit stability/decrease heat production
I need to mention: After I transferred my system to the new case, i was able to play longer than average compared to my old case. So I am guessing that improper cooling was part of the problem, yet improving cooling obviously didn't resolve it.
Since these freezes are really annoying and nobody could help me resolve this so far, I'm hoping to find some new ways of narrowing down the problem or even getting rid of it here.
    Regards
    Sebb

Lets be realistic. A system with a 560TI is recommended to have a around 31Amps under full load, a CX500 would be sufficient.
Have you monitored your CPU and memory utilisation ?
As suggested before, test the GPU in another computer to see if the behaviour is the same.
Whew, I thought for a second there that my common sense had left me when I saw that 60-Amp-Post ^^
Yes, I monitored CPU and RAM usage, there is no recognizeable pattern to be seen and it almost never happens under full load.
I will see if a friend of mine can test my GPU on his computer, and I will test it underclocked right away.
Though one more question regarding that: Should I only underclock GPU Core Clock or both Core and RAM clock?
