  • X305-Q705 - GPU and CPU upgrades possible?

    Question 1:
I know that on some models have 2 GPUs.
How can I upgrade the 9700M GTS and can I use crossfire or SLI?
    Question 2:
What is the CPU I can buy for my laptop?
    Many thanks,
    Zyon

Raver. What makes you think SLI is restricted to desktops only? There are plenty of notebooks out there with dual GPUs in SLI configuration including higher spec versions of this one. The x305-q706 has dual 9700m GTS's in SLI
This notebook will support most dual and quad Penryn processors upto QX9300. but upgrading will be trouble because the motherboard has to be removed first because there is no easy access to the CPU from underneath the notebook.
But ravers right with not needing to upgrade, It has plenty of power at the moment.

Which process takes the longest in FCPX (requiring the most work from the GPU and CPU)?  Is it rendering or sharing?  I realize each machine will give different times but I'm speaking in generalities.
    Thanks!

I'm not going  to try to answer your question in generalities; just too many moving parts to take into account.
But here are three links to articles and/or videos that you may find useful.

  • Photoshop CS6 Running Slow After GPU/RAM/CPU Upgrade?

    Hi all,
I recently upgraded my Mac Pro 1,1 with the following:
CPU Upgrade to 2 x 2.66GHz Quad Core
    RAM Upgrade to 14GB
GFX Upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024mb VRAM
Everything seems fine. My temperatures are normal and things are seemingly speedy.
My problem is that Photoshop CS6 seems to run a little slow. I'm only working on web files (72dpi) that are yes, sometimes quite long in length (5000px high), but that has never been an issue.
    Some problems I've noticed:
When I click to edit text, it may take 2 seconds before I can start editing it
When I scroll upwards it chugs a little
If I grab an object/shape and drag it around too quick, it might lag a little
I'm not sure how to explain it really, but for the couple hundred dollars I spent on upgrading my maching, I wouldn't expect any of these things to be an issue.
Here are my photoshop performance settings:
Any suggestions would help. No trolls please.

Something to try:  Reset Photoshop's preferences to defaults.
Press and hold Command - Shift - Option immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop.  If you get the keys down quickly enough - and you have to be very quick - you'll get a prompt asking you to confirm deleting your current preferences.  Once you confirm that, Photoshop will start up with a default set of parameters, though you will still find you can select your named workspaces and (I believe) your Actions will all still be there.
Try immediately to see if the problem recurs.  Then methodically make your preferred preferences changes, quit Photoshop, and restart, then test to see that the problem hasn't recurred.
With some luck, you'll have cleared up the sluggishness, and will have been able to make all your preferences changes you like without it recurring.
    This really can work.

  • OS X Tiger and CPU Upgrades

I have a 400 MHz G4. I primarily use it for FCP 2 and music but have been having problems seeing my Que Fire firewire cdrw. I have thought about a CPU upgrade and want to add a DVD+-RW to copy projects out to DVD's instead of tapes. With the trouble of having to hack a driver in 9.2 to get a DVD unit to work - would it be easier to upgrade to OS X Tiger to get around the DVD issues and get new features but am I only going to have more issues because of the upgraded CPU. The Apple specs say OS X is not compatible with upgrades but the manufacturers of the cpu upgrades say they are. Several of the new OS X DVD units I've looked at require at least 500MHz. (I posted earlier on the OS 9 forum - my old cdrw works on a new FW equipped laptop with Tiger.) I'm trying to get some more life out of my old G4 because I can't afford to buy a new G5. Any suggestions???? Thanks

You will triple the stated clock speed, but in no way
will the machine run 3 times as fast. You'll be lucky
to notice much change at all.
Yes you're right, in real world terms the machine won't be 3 times as fast, as you're still stuck with the same 100MHz system bus and memory etc, but I think that saying you'll be lucky to notice much change at all is a little unfair.
I recently upgraded the processor in one of my Macs and the difference was very noticeable, from reduced boot/rendering/encoding times to greater all round responsiveness.
If you're moving from OS 9 to OS X and you don't upgrade the processor, I expect OS X will feel pretty sluggish in comparison, although like you say more RAM will help.

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

  • L530 BIOS and CPU upgrade problems

I recently upgraded the cpu in my E520 from a 2520M to a 2760QM. Though the cpu was not officially supported, it worked perfectly without so much as a bios update. It even benchmarks above passmark's average.
Smash cut to ebay a couple weeks later where I picked up a L530 and a 3720QM in an attempt to pull the same trick on an Ivy Bridge system. I installed the new cpu and it didn't post. Just some beep errors.
After doing quite a lot of research and buying a spi programmer I have tried the following:
    Updating the BIOS (beep errors)
    Updating the microcodes (beep errors)
Flashing a coreboot rom based on the T530 (would not even power on)
And flashing a rom with all microcode related data replaced with W530 code (still booted old processor, but gave beep errors with the 3720QM)
So this leaves me with a question. What could I be missing? The sockets and chipsets are compatible. It has got to be a BIOS problem. Is there a CPU whitelist I am not aware of?
I have not really been able to find any further information and any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • HP Probook 4710s RAM and CPU upgrade!( where to get them?)

Hello, i have a HP probook 4710s, and I also make motorbike videos and general videos with a GoPro Hero 3+, and its full HD at 1080p and 60fps. My laptop can't play this. I can watch full HD videos on youtube for example, but when i try to play it on windows media player the video shatters and lags and I simply can't watch it. I found what seems to be a solution, Some people said i have to upgrade the CPU to a dual core 2.0ghz.. The problem is I don't know much about computers, so can you talk with me like a total noob, please? ANd i also need to know where I can buy the CPU and the RAM online!!!

    Hello Blackdavid.
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure, I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums, since this is a commercial product. You can click here for the link.

  • GPU and CPU high temperatures on Sony VAIO VPCEA1S1E

    Hi,
I have a problem with my Sony VAIO VPCEA1S1E (with Intel Core i3 330M and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 inside). The temperatures of CPU and GPU are higher under Linux than under Windows. As a result the fan is much more noisy.
    Under Windows
When the system is idle the temperatures are about:
    GPU: 52-58°C
    CPU1: 42-50°C
    CPU2: 36-45°C
In System Monitor tool there are 4 CPUs displayed and two of them (CPU1 and CPU3) remain suspended most of the time (while CPU0 and CPU2 are running all the time). The cooling fan is silent. This is OK.
    Under Linux
When the system is idle the temperatures are about:
    GPU: 67-69°C
    CPU1: 55-57°C
    CPU2: 35-57°C
I use xf86-video-ati driver and 2.6.36.2-1 kernel version. I also use cpufreq and powertop output looks as follows:

I've also tried using Power Management tips for Radeon from Arch Wiki but the only option I could set in /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method file was dynpm and it made no effect.
It seems to me that the main problem is power management of the Radeon card as it interrupts CPUs very often and heats most. I suspect that the CPU temperatures may be increased because of the Radeon ones (but I may be wrong).
I hope someone can help with the issue...

I tried replacing xf86-video-ati with catalyst driver and it helped indeed Thanks Mektub!
@kismet010: Did you run aticonfig --initial (as root) after installing catalyst? It's very important. Before I run it the temperatures (and fan noise) were the same as with xf86-video-ati. Actually there are some more configuration steps that have to be taken after installing catalyst - check ATI Catalyst @ ArchWiki.
Now I'm bothering with dual head configuration because catalyst incorrectly sets the primary screen (i.e. the other way round as xf86-video-ati does) but it's for another thread.

  • MSI GX60 1AC THX utilities and cpu upgrade

Hello, I've recently bought clean gx60 without OS. I've made clean install of windows 8 from my dreamspark student account under uefi. I've installed all the drivers from product site. The first problem encounterd was with realtek driver for audio, when i run the setup, it didn't run, then i clicked for troubleshooting, it said program is incompatible. So i installed it, by device manager update driver. Another same problem is with two utilities for THX, they won't run, and windows says they are incompatible. So in this matter any help would be appreciated, becouse i want to benefit from this tools.
Another question is if I can but new amd processor a10-5750m and install it in this laptop eventually, or it can't work.
    Cheers

Hello again. So I've managed to find out, that my bios was 105 version for non.win8 systems, so i've updated it to 109 from official site. So now is the question. Does this mean for me, that even so i've installed win8 i lack some of features in for example boot procedure? Should I reinstall the system to windows 7 or reinstall windows 8 under bios not uefi.? Or maybe there is a way to install bios for windows 8 which is uploaded on product site, despite that they're telling that it shouldn't be done?

  • Is it bad for Fans and CPU?

    Hey guys,
I'm currently using a mid-2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro with 2.6 GHz + 16GB of ram. I've been really wanting to use the SETI home application. This application basically uses your CPU's power and GPU's power at 100% (unless you're doing something else)
Obviously, with CPU + GPU at 100%, the fans are going to kick on. My question is, is it bad to run the computer at 100% capacity for GPU and CPU? Will this damage the fans over time?
I'm talking about leaving the computer on for hours at a time and letting it do its thing. There's a very good chance it will be hot for several hours with the fans on for several hours.
On a previous Retina MacBook Pro I owned, I tried this and processor reached 212 degrees F (boiling point for water) and 180 F for GPU. Fans were on all the time.
Is this bad and how bad is it?
    Thanks a lot.

You're doing what some could call a burn-in run. Where you get everything hot and sustain that usage for long periods of time. The Mac can handle that, I have used older MBP's for the IT field and they had to process tons of data, they got hot, but I let them cool down at night.
The fans won't get damaged, its a solid-state motor, unless you stick something in the fan...
The thermal paste on the CPU/GPU may degrade quicker though. That is my one hesitation about dedicating this machine to that.
I should note, that the heat and the power consumption is going to take it's toll on your electric bill too.
85 watts * ~6 run hours per day = about $40 more on the bill.

  • CPU and Motherboard upgrade for Premiere Elements 11

Hi all. Been perusing the Premiere Elements and Pro forums but still have a few questions.
I’m upgrading Premiere Elements from PrE9 to PrE11 and am upgrading some of my desktop’s hardware at the same time. I could use some advice about choosing a CPU, graphics card, and motherboard. The goal of this upgrade is to considerably speedup transcoding without breaking the bank. The budget’s a bit flexible but I’d like to keep it at or under $500 for the motherboard/CPU combo.
The computer will be used for editing and transcoding AVCHD videos. The videos are shot in either 1080i or 1080p using a Panasonic HDC-TM700.
I’m processing about 2-3 hours of video per week and my current system takes a long time to transcode. For example, it takes well over 3 hours to convert 1 hour of AVCHD video to wmv. An Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 with 3 GB of RAM was fine for the occasional video, but it’s too slow for what’s currently needing to be processed.
    New CPU:
At this point I’m looking at the following processors:
    i5 3570K
    Ivy Bridge
    No hyper threading
    i7 2600K
    Sandy Bridge
    hyper threading
    i7 3770K
    Ivy Bridge
    hyper threading
    Questions:
) Does PrE11 make use of hyper threading?
) If PrE11 doesn’t use hyper threading is there much of anything to be gained by getting the i7? The i5 is about $90- $100 cheaper than the i7 CPUs and seems pretty quick.
    New Motherboard:
I’ve had good luck overclocking Asus motherboards, so I’m leaning towards getting another one, but am open to alternatives.
The choice of board will depend mainly on Intel’s northbridge chip:
    Ivy Bridge       –  Z77 chip
    Sandy Bridge  –  Z68 chip
    Question:
) Are there any other northbridge chip/CPU combos I should be looking at?
    Current Graphics Card:
    nVidia Geforce 8400 GS 512 MB DDR2
Drivers are up to date and downloaded from nVidia.
    Question:
) Since PrE11 doesn’t use the graphics card’s GPU, will it be okay to continue using this card for the new build? I’m not a gamer and this card works just fine for the current build.
    Additional hardware/software details:
    PSU: Seasonic X660
HDD: Four 1TB 7200 rpm drives
    Memory: 16 GB DDR3 RAM
OS: Win7 64 bit or Win8 64 bit (haven’t decided yet whether to go with Win 7 or 8)
Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

I have been going through the same process. Yes PE does support multiple threads and definatley go with the ivybridge i7 cpu. Asus is also the board I'm going with. They have made OCing much easier but be careful of high temps that leads to early failure of the cpu . Most of them let you have a maximum of 32 gig of ram and with memory so cheap check out upgrading to a higher grade memory. This can be overclocked as well. One of the ivy bridge cpus has 6 cores but cost $500 plus and requires a more expensive MB as well. too expensive for me though. I believe the built in graphics processor in the i7 k series the HD4000 is enough for PE. For about $650 I got an i7 at Microcenter for $229 and I think they just lowered the price to $200 an Asus MB at Newegg for $140 and 16gig ram for $70 also check out SSD drives in the 128 gig range are about $100 which you could use for you C: drive maybe take it up to 256 gig for more. They are getting pretty cheap
    Good luck with your build.

  • Cpu and motherboard upgrade

I want to upgrade my cpu to a good one so I need a mother board and the cpu my budget is 150 or should I build my own pc I have a gpu in my pic at the moment any suggestions

    hi,
firstly you need to be clear as to whether you want any future upgrades or not(namely a graphics card,in the case of which a power supply upgrade would also be needed)
assuming you only need a cpu and mobo upgrade i must say that 150$ is a little low for upgrading both...a decent cpu comes at that price...
for the cpu id recommend, firstly ,something from intel as they last longer than their amd counterparts...you could look at the following-
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD6300WMHKBOX-FX-6300-6-Core-Processor/dp/B009O7YORK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electron... you REALLY want something from amd this is it)
intel core i3-3210,4150(i'd go for this)
as for the mobo...if you want the intel cpu it has to be an lga 1150 socket type...at a lower price range, the
    Intel DH87RL 4th Generation
mobo is quite good, the MSI B85M-G43 Motherboard is also worth a look(this one is my recommendation)
for an amd it has to be of the am3 socket type-the
Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Motherboard is what id get
youll have to stretch to around 200 at the least
this is just an outline...anything else you need, just ask
