  • GT70-2OD/2OC/2PE/2PC/GT60 EC mod to use 240w AC adapter?

    Hello,
I have searched high and low to see if someone has come up with a solution for this. These MSI gaming laptops have 'NOS' where it sucks power from the battery when power consumption approaches 180 watts. This can be very annoying if you have an overclocked Haswell extreme CPU and a 780m or 880m GPU both number crunching @ 100% concurrently and for extended periods of time. It cannot be sustained because the battery will drain down. The GT70-2OD Dragon laptop review on tomshardware goes over this in detail.
Is the limitation set in the firmware of the EC or BIOS to allow the laptop to suck more than 180 watts from it's DC jack? 240 watts would be perfect but also there are the voltage regulators and power lines to think of, what they are rated for.
But I'm wondering is there a definite solution to allow more than 180w or is that still in the research phase? As the Extreme CPUs get cheaper more people would want that mod.
Asus and Alienware did it right with 240W AC adapters, don't know why MSI cheaped out with 180w.
    Thank you

Considerably improved over the GT70, purchased from Ken at GenTech PC, I am one of the first official GT72 owners on the planet.
So, what improvements does the GT72 bring to the table?
     1. Improved chassis design.
     2. Larger touchpad, smooth and seamless with the palm rest.
     3. A large, cool to the touch, glass-like polymer palm rest.
     4. More USB 3.0 ports.
     5. A 230W PA.
     6. A 1080p webcam
     7. Revised Steelseries keyboard, flex-free, with brighter back-lighting.
     8. Dual fan cooling solution, with improved chassis vent design, a better fan control profile, ergo.....
     9. Better overall temps, with quieter operation.
     10. Re-designed chassis, and finally a new model designation.
     11. Gone is the problematic capacitance touch bar, replaced with positive touch switches.
     12. Gone is finicky Optimus switching, replaced with a simple dedicated GPU switch.
     13. mSATA SuperRAID 2, is replaced with M.2 SuperRAID 3, increasing speed, and the capacity of the RAID set. ( M.2 should improve significantly with the Intel 9-Series chipset)
     14. Killer Doubleshot Pro, wherein Ethernet and Wireless can be used independently, or simultaneously for improved bandwidth.
     15. And finally, due to the overall re-design, a more intuitive gaming experience.

    Initial thoughts......
Well, here it is..... the MSI GT72-2PE Dominator Pro-007US, and the photos below do not do it justice. It's Bold, it's Bad, it's Fast, it's Powerful, and honestly, there is not much, not to like about this notebook. If there is one thing I feel could have been better, it would be the display. The Chi Mei CMN1735 has good brightness, color, and contrast, but lacks decent viewing angles.
Anyhow, I have already spent a lot of time with tweaking, photos, benchmarks, etc., so I am going to cut-to-the-chase, and try to make this as short as possible.
As to performance, the benchmarks below attest to the GT72's awesomeness, so what about noise, and the redesigned dual-fan cooling solution? Simply put, it is quieter than the GT70, has a better fan profile, and temps are well managed. Given the hardware, of course you will hear the fans spin up when the system is stressed, but it is not at all disturbing..... and when doing common task, the fans are only noticed if you get close and cozy with the system. Ambient room temperature was 78F, and the system's idle temps were CPU@38C, and GPU@36C. Without the use of Cooler Booster ('stock' fan profile only), during benchmarks the CPU reached 78C, and the GPU averaged 80C, peaking to 82C during the 3DMark Sky Diver benchmark. The palm rest remains cool to the touch, it's polymer is smooth as glass, and it's surface is seamless across the touchpad. Only a mild warmth rises from the keyboard.
The Steelseries keyboard is indeed flex-free, keys are very positive and responsive, and the back-lighting is brighter..... which I attribute to the keyboard's re-design. Looks awesome!
So what about SuperRAID 3, is it fast? Oh YEAH! Performance exceeds SuperRAID 2, as expected, and the system boots to desktop in as little as 6 to 7 seconds. HD Tune Pro reports an average read time for the Toshiba M.2 SSD's, as 1535MB/s..... while the previous SuperRAID 2 Sandisk X100 mSATA SSD's was an average of 1411MB/s. On the other hand, SuperRAID 3 really shines in the Crystal Disk Mark scores. To best evaluate the 'Real-World' performance of SuperRAID 3, I used the PCMark 8 Storage Test. For those unfamiliar with this benchmark, the performance score of 5014 is very respectible. The duration of this grueling benchmark is generally 1 to 3 hours, and the GT72 sped through in just 1 hour and 8 minutes. All in all, I applaud MSI's use of the new M.2 SSD's, but I think performance will most improve with future 9-Series Intel chipsets.
With all the attributes I've mentioned above, it is when gaming, that you understand the mastery of it's intuitive design. The re-designed flex-free keyboard, the large smooth & heat-free palm rest, the spatial Dynaudio speakers, and vivid display, all lend to an immersive gaming experience. So much so, I found myself playing my test game, far longer than originally intended.
To run the GT72 through it's paces, I chose the recently released, AMD optimized title, Sniper Elite III, by Rebellion. With settings max'ed to 'Ultra', the GTX-880M smoothly sliced through the frames like a hot knife to butter, with frame-rates from 54 to 82Fps, averaging at 65Fps. Game play was extremely smooth and fluid, and never a hic-cup or artifact.
To represent the 'Out-of-the-Box' experience, I played with the stock fan profile, and Cooler Booster was never used. Like with my benchmark testing, the fan noise was not disturbing, and game audio though the Dynaudio speakers easily comes to the forefront. Fan noise was never a distraction. Temps of the GPU peaked to 82C, but averaged 64C, and the CPU peaked at 68C, averaging 54C. Again, with hardware like this, and without the use of Cooler Booster, these temps are outstanding.... and the new dual fan design is a success!
Initially I intended my game session to be an hour..... in no time it became 3+ hours, and playing on this notebook is simply FUN!
The look and feel is very stylish, and smooth finish is actually somewhat fingerprint resistant. Overall, with these great looks, it's fully loaded system specs, and stellar performance scores, the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro not only entitles bragging rights..... it DEMANDS them!
All of this has me VERY excited for the upcoming next-gen 9-Series, Maxwell, X-treme Edition GT72! Can't wait!
    Enjoy!

  • Adding mSATA/mSSd to a MSI GT70 2OD-407US

    Hi,
I'm a new owner of an MSI GT70 (wife finally let me buy one). I'm not at all new to modding computers of varies calipers. I honestly haven't been in the game in 3 years and coming back up the ladder because the technology has changed. I've kinda been in a geeks purgatory(married and in the ARMY), so life's been really busy for me and has not allowed me to keep up with current tech.
My Question. Modding my GT70 2OD-497US:
MAXing RAM to 16GBs, Easy. that's a no brainer.
where I need help is adding mSata/mSSD to my MSI to use it as a boot drive for the Window 7 Home Premium it comes with.. Thinking about add 128/256GB as boot and recovery as well as other important files and using the 1 TB 7200RPM HDD as pure storage to run programs, videos, movies, and music off of. (I'm not a big gamer)
I have not received my MSI yet and won't touch it for another month or so. I have plenty of time to figure it out. This question been raking my brain for a week, so that's why I'm post for some help.
Any information no matter if you're "talking above my head or not" is highly appreciative. If I think I don't know what you're talking about I will ask questions and do tons of research.. I used to be at the top of the GEEK food chain, but starting at the bottom now. I don't mind admitting that. The Army and marriage takes a lot of my time.
Add-on to message: I do not know if the GT70 2OD-407US comes with the msata slot board, it should, but can't seem to verify. If not I can buy one.

So lets back this up with a number of facts.
I can't find any information about the GT70 2OD-497US so....
Does the notebook come with an SSD?
If it does, then you will have the "Super Raid" adapter that lets you put mSATA drives into the laptop.
If it does NOT, then you will NOT have the "Super Raid" adapter, and you will not be able to put mSATA drives into the laptop.....without attaining a Super Raid adapter. This is difficult. MSI will NOT sell them. If you are LUCKY, you might be able to talk to a distributor or company that offers customized MSI notebooks into selling you just the adapter, but I'm not sure they will. If they will not, you're pretty much SoL. Supposedly there was a chinese company selling the adapters, but I don't recall the name or if they still are.
In all honesty, if you don't have the adapter, I would just order a regular 2.5" SSD drive instead and live with it.
A couple of other things I can suggest.
Get at a minimum a 240/256GB SSD. You'll find that after installing Windows and such you only have roughly 75 gigs maybe left on your 128GB SSD. And I just don't think that's enough. The 240/256GB drives are cheap enough now that you shouldn't have any problems getting it.
When you partition your SSD, only partition it for about 85% of the total space (so 85% of 256GB = 215 GB). Leave the rest of it unpartitioned. This is called over-provisioning, and will help to maintain the overall speed of the SSD (read/write speed) during the entire life of the SSD. The reason it does this is because it provides more space for TRIM to work, even if you completely fill the partition you created. If you had fully partitioned the drive, and almost filled it, the speed would start to deteriorate because there isn't enough 'space' to do TRIM anymore and it has to work harder to do it, causing your overall read/write speed to decrease. This is especially bad on Samsung drives.  (for more information, go search around on www.anandtech.com, plenty of good information and benchmarks to backup my statements)
Other than those tips, you should be good to go.....BUT!
The VERY FIRST THING YOU DO AFTER LOGGING INTO YOUR NEW NOTEBOOK? Please please please create the backup DVD's! MSI does not provide backup media inside the box. You need to make these on your own using the included MSI Burn Recovery software.

  • GT70 2OD downloads bios driver firmware

    i have GT70 2OD-019US
i tried to update my graphic card driver from  http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-2OD.html#download
it didnt work it said not compatiable
im using latest beta driver from nvidia webiste
you guys have right stuff on the website
there is so much variation i didnt see GT70 2OD-019US link so i guess i could use downloads from GT70 20D
    maybe im wrong
download was hard to find and stuff not working
    support sucks

Quote from: spacealien on 17-September-13, 04:21:57
im confused just as you are.
I like to keep my stuff updated to the latest so i went to nvidia website
download the driver for geforce gtx 780m
i tried to install the driver but it wont let me install cuz it's not compatible with my card
so i went to the link above download the oem graphic card driver which im not too clear it's right one for my laptop
cuz it's doesn't say gtx 780 it says something like nvidia n14 chipset i have no idea what it mean
i installed it cuz that's all i can find for my laptop. it let me install but my geforce card doesn't work
my laptop switch over to intel graphic card and my nvidia card has red x on it under device tree
fortunately i found the latest beta nvidia work on my laptop otherwise i could ended up with non working video card
    the title
all the downloads im not sure they are right stuff for my laptop
i updated bios, firmware, and some of the driver
they are working so far i haven't found any problem with them
the graphic card driver make me think that maybe the stuff i updated might not be right for my laptop
im confused with many gt 70 series
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-64bit-326.80-beta-driver.html
    Try that driver.
The problem with the 320.49 'release' drivers is that they don't include the proper information to work with the newer GTX7XXM video cards on MSI laptops. You need to download the latest beta drivers, as they have the proper information to work. The next release, whatever that might be, should work just fine then.
As far as the other drivers...
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-2OC.html#download
should have all the drivers you need. You can try going to the individual manufacturer website to update them too, such as Intel for the Intel iGPU.

  • 1763 gt70 2od What is barebones?

So I am confused to the line of computers. I am a happy owner of a Gt70-2od.
Which is the GTX780m, 16gb of ram, 4700 i7 blah blah.
I cannot find any detailed information about this computer.
I have read something that it is a bare-bones computer?
    Or it isn't?
    What does that even mean?
I wanted to know about getting a modded or unlocked bios for this computer, so I can get a better power supply and bump up gpu and cpu numbers.
Also wanted to know if redoing paste on my computer will void the warranty along with putting more ram in and getting a new hard drive.
I love my computer, i just don't know as much as I can about it.

if its a 2OD its no barebones computer as that term means it has NO RAM (that has 16GB installed), HDD/SSD (Has Drives installed already) no OS (has Windows 8.1 installed) so its not a barebones its a gaming laptop that's pre-built!

  • MSI GT70 2OD Nvidia Drivers

Is there a reason why MSI GT70 2OD owners are unable to upgrade to the latest Nvidia Drivers for their 780M?
Other brands with the 780M seem to be able to upgrade (Alienware, Clevo etc), but the drivers won't work with the MSI Laptop.
Will we only be able to get drivers from MSI for this laptop, or in the future will we be able to install drivers from Nvidia?

Quote from: Svet on 04-July-13, 18:49:08
nvidia should add support for MSI's as well with next updates.
Svet is 100% accurate with this.
When the GT70's originally came out with the GTX6XX cards in them, they didn't have support from NVidia for a few driver releases. I expect that within the next few driver releases, support will be added.
Most likely, it should be possible to make the new drivers work if you did some INF editing though.....

  • Can I install Windows 7 on a GT70 2OD-019US that came with Windows 8?

I have a GT70 2OD-019US, that came with Windows 8. I want to install Windows 7 instead, and forget about the trauma of Win8.
My Win 8 isn't the type that offers the downgrade.
I just want to know can (and how) I install Win 7 Home Premium from a legit disc.
I'm reasonably tech savvy, but a beginner when it comes to playing around with the OS.
    Notebook spec below.
Thanks in advance for all assistance!

Thanks Nichrome and darkhawk. I'll try booting from the disc using Legacy.
I hadn't heard of Start8 - it looks good, if I end up keeping Win8 it'll be worth the few bucks to make it feel like Win7.
It's what I did, and honestly, outside of the 'looks' of Windows 8, it makes it feel like Windows 7 enough that it's worth the $5.

    BTW MSI site stated this
"If the notebook you purchased has Win7 Bios installed, please DON'T attempt to update using Windows 8 bios (or vice versa). Failure to abide may result in bricking your system."
Since this laptop came with no OS and installed windows 7 on it is it save to flash 70W?
    Just wanna know for sure.

Yes it is,but you may need to use attached archive. [.1xx and .3xx and Win7 BIOSes, your current one is Win8 BIOS]
by extract all files then executing FLASHWIN64.BAT
once flashing is done change Sata mode from RAID[default] to AHCI

  • MSI GT70 2OD eSATA Port

I might be asking a stupid question here but where is the eSATA port on the MSI GT70 2OD?
On the MSI website under specification it states (sorry can't seem to post a hyperlink):
    eSATA                          1
    eSATA/USB  Combo     1
If it is one of the USB ports, what type of adapter do I need to use eSATA (without loosing performance by running under USB)

    http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-770m
According to that it is supported.
I'm not certain how well it will work, but it should. I would assume it does over Display Port, but I honestly have no idea as I don't have any.

  • MSi GT70 2OD GPU

    Hi guys.
I´m new here, but I have one question.
Is it possible to change GPU on MSi GT70 2OD notebook? I whould like to change from GTX780M to GTX980M.

It will most likely work fine.  You can get a 980M for $720 and a 970M for $450.  Either card will probably work.  The 970m works fine in my system (a GT60 2OD 780m).  No reason a 980m wouldn't also work fine.  You will need to do a small heatsink mod with a dremel or rotary tool.  Took me about 5 minutes.
Eventually you will be able to find official MSI 970m heatsinks on eBay or forums from other users.  You can then purchase that and have an official MSI heatsink.
There is a thread I created over at notebook review forums under MSI section showing the mod required and how I did it.  Goodluck with your upgrading.
