GT70 Dominator Occasional Short Lag (Gameplay Continues But Sound Stops?)

Hello. Just wanted to say that this is a great laptop overall. But soemthing's been bugging me.
Every so often, games seem to have trouble loading certain things. When I play Payday 2, for example, the computer seems to wait a few seconds before actually showing items in the inventory. Also, sometimes during games, the sound cuts out, then plays audio that was supposed to play before the sound cut out. I have not been able to pinpoint a thread with my issue, so I hope that it is fixable. I can try to post a video of my issue if need be.
Please help?

No no nononono I don't see $200-$400 as "inexpensive". I'm already in the hole around $1400 and I'm getting barely $35 a week. I'm already pushing the limit as it is, even more so spending under $100 on another hard drive.
HOWEVER!
I did some research into this particular brand of HDD and it seems that they are known for drives that go to sleep after an extremely short amount of time (most say around 30 seconds, a few even say eight seconds). A user (shinhikari) even posted a possible solution:
Quote
I've tried The Crystal Disk Info utility and I think it's the best workaround we have right now... Set the APM to 80h and the drive won't spin down... The latest Crystal Disk Utility has the option to set  APM automatically... so whenever you re-plug the HDD, it will automatically set the APM to 80h... That's it... this solve my problem and I don't think WD is coming up with a solution... so this is your best bet...
Okay here what I did,
Set the program to run on start up and be a resident:
Function -> Resident (ticked)
Function -> StartUp (ticked)
Set the APM from 60H to 80H:
Function -> Advance Feature -> AAM/APM Control -> Choose your WD drive from the dropdown menu -> set APM to 80h
Set the program to automatically set APM to 80h:
Function -> Advance Feature -> Auto AAM/APM Adaptation (ticked)
And lastly, set the program to auto detect newly connected drive:
Function -> Advance Feature -> Auto Dectection -> 30sec (you can make this faster if you want)
That's it... I hope this solve your problem as well
And here is the APM value as stated by Crystal Disk Info utility...
00h          Reserved
01h          Minimum power consumption with Standby
02h-7Fh  Intermediate power management levels with Standby
80h          Minimum power consumption without Standby
81h-FDh  Intermediate power management levels without Standby
FEh          Maximum performance
FFh          Reserved
So I think you can set the APM value to other value as needed...
In my opinion, if you are a heavy user, you can safely stay at 80h or above, it eliminate the need for the drive to go into standby... this logically reduce the mechanical wear of the drive...
But if you are not, you might want to set up the APM to 7FH or below... so it will still go into standby but after a longer idle time (not just a silly 8 seconds!)... I haven't tested this... but it is supposed to do as I think
Anyway do it at your own risk okay... I don't want to be held responsible
I have yet to test this out, but I'm feeling optimistic this time.

I want to listen to itunes through my 5.1 amp thru apple tv but the sound stops when when my television is switched off how can I stop this?
All I want to be on is my PC and my amp connected thru ATV via optical linkl

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes there have been a number of reports posted about this, it seems different people experience different results here with some finding the same as you, some finding that it won't work at all with the TV turned off and some finding that if music is sent from iTunes on the mac/pc that as long as the TV is on when the stream starts, the TV can be turned off afterwards.
My assumption here is that it depends on the TV itself, although that probably doesn't help all that much.

  • GT70 Dominator Audio/Sound Issue + FPS Lag + Crash

I just installed Titanfall on my 1tb HDD. When I play, half way through the match the audio gets distorted like it's cutting out & really scratchy. At the same the the game LAGS big time, FPS down and the ping shoots up. I get this 2/3 games. To get rid of it you have to exit the game and restart. You absolutely cannot play the game when it happens.
I thought it was just because of Titanfall.... but when I played League of Legends, it happens every other game too! It seems like it can't handle all the sounds? Or I have no clue. I did not modify any drivers or anything. Played these games straight out of the box.
I searched on the internet and there seems to be just a handful of people that this happens to and no real solution yet.

Hey, I don't know if you got this fixed or not but I just bought a brand new GT70 and I'm having the same exact problem...I am trying a few workarounds I have seen on other forums but jeez what a ridiculous amount of work to get a machine thats supposed to be for playing games to do what it was made to. I think the windows 7 rollback will be my last option but honestly windows 8-8.1 sucks so it's not a bad idea.

  • MSI GT70 dominator pro 890 For workstation

Ive posted this on the 'workstation' section, as it would fit better there, but my laptop is technically the gaming. So, yes it is a double post one in each forum.
Wanted to know if my laptop was good for rendering, if there were any tips or tricks for using my laptop for video editing, or any tips or tricks for using vegas pro 13 in general. Newbie to this program, normally use cyberlink powerdirector 12.

Question of the rendering process. If I have gpu accelerated turned on in normal preferences, but render using cpu only in the actual final render as options screen,, my 15 min movie takes about 22 min. Temps skyrocket cpu wise for first 5 seconds then calm to 90c (80c with turbo fan), gpu gets to 70c (60c with turbo fan). CPU is around 80% resourced, gpu core max, memory clock max, gpu load 15%.
But if I have same gpu acceleration on main preferences, and change to gpu rendering only under the actual final rendering as options, it takes 28 min, cpu is at 68% (80c max fan), gpu core and memory max, gpu load up from 15% to 30%, memory controller up from 3% to 11% (65c temps).
So what I see is that gpu rendering preferred options but render cpu only, uses some gpu but more cpu, and gives faster results, than total gpu rendering with more gpu power and less cpu.
Shouldn't gpu rendering be far quicker than cpu? I know my cpu is good, but thought that the 880m would definitely beat it out in rendering.

Normally I would like to say this is very good choice, but since MSI have real workstation, I recommend you check below link to find the real machine for OpenGL graphics works!!

Yup, great recommendation, and also what I thought and spent about 2 weeks researching before not buying. The most often supplied k2000m chip is crap. What it does for professional programs could be compared to the gtx 755m. The k3000 gpu is a decent mid range chip, but the k3000m is a low end. I'd compare it to the gtx 765m for gaming. Only real benefit would be specific drivers. The k4000m is the equivalent of the 870m but for professional. But isn't offered until you hit the $3000 mark. Reading so many reviews and watching several youtube videos showing side by side geoforce vs quaddro, and some programs like photoshop and vegas pro are actually rendered quicker on the geoforce. While Autodesk and maya were within a min of each other.
I know you probably saw this chart
I saw it to, which in the very beginning of my laptop search I thought I had found the perfect laptop. But after reading user forums, talking to/with people first hand, then watching some you tube showing side by side 780m vs 3100m rendering. I decided that until I could get the 4100m at a decent price, the 880m would suite me well.
The 'workstation' laptops are also 4700mq not the 4800-4810mq.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGP0ga6salw
    Heres one of photoshop comparison
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryf4b6BMjNk
heres a 2 year old maya comparison. While this one is a little off. I found one a few weeks ago that was perfect and I really should've short cutted it. But for maya and solid works, the geoforce is either right behind or right ahead for speed. But when it comes to quality, the quaddro's cant be touched.
When I use solidworks/maya for a project, normally its just something really quick. In which 100% detail isn't important, but speed is. If/when I need a perfect product, that's what the pc is for. My major projects even on a k4100m (the best mobile chip) it would take countless hours to render. My pc, dual titan black, would take 30-60 min. So I  could use laptop to start and work with project, the 880m does a great job at in project editing acceleration, then i save file/settings export. Load on pc, make sure everythings still good, and render on there. But typical large projects are better done on high dpi mouse, mechanical keyboard, and larger monitors.
I'm not slamming you at all. Thanks for the comment, typically you'd be 100% correct. And if i didn't have a full out rendering pc, that would be my only option. Plus, i hope you or anyone reading this learned a little something. Or if im wrong somewhere, i can be corrected and learn something.

  • GT70 dominator pro not as fast as expected?

I see reviews online of people running Diablo 3 at over 100FPS with the 880m..
Sometimes I'm seeing in the mid 50FPS range..
Temps have never been a problem.. I typically have the fan on high when I game..
My typical firestrike score is around 5200
    Ice Storm 88-90k
    Cloudgate 18-18.5k
    Skydiver around 16,300.
This is the gt70 dominator pro 889.

Have you played around with overclocking?
Ive played with cpu overclocking. Got 4.0 on 4 cores during boost only. Had what I thought was a great overclock, ran realbench benchmark and intel tuning utility benchmark and got a worse score. No idea why, so I just left voltage stock, and upped boost clocks.
My gpu (I think all) run around the 90c mark while max settings gaming. So any gpu overclock will just bring the thermal limit quicker. But the msi 880m seems to automatically boost to 980mhz ish, which is higher than the normal 940mhz. With throttling, normally I just see it throttle the boost and bring me down to lik e920mhz. No biggie. If I turn on max fan boost, then typically still run high 80's c, but don't feel the need. I seldom play games, I use more for 3d and video rendering which was main point in buying laptop. But when I do game, its titanfall and/or borderlands 2. Both those games are pretty much max settings, 60fps with dips down to 40's while the whole screen is blowing up with explosions and such. But don't notice any lag or anything, so no complaints. My g750 js/jm models were quieter during gaming, but that said, the msi is noticeable fan, and seems every 20 seconds or so the fan kicks in higher for like 5 seconds then back down. Normally during daytime cant notice, but at night while in bed with wife, then that's where the fan noise starts to worry me. Ive only had this laptop for less than a week, but after the last few nights of rendering (which leads like absolutely no fan noise) and gaming (noticeable fan noise but not disturbing).

  • Maximum External Display Size for GT70 Dominator Pro 889?

Hey all, new to the forums. I tried googling the subject question but cant seem to find anything. Just got my GT70 Dominator Pro 889, it has the 17.3 inch display, GTX 880 8 GB, 16 GB RAM, i7-4810, and a TB HD with a 128 GB SSD. I figured I'd test it out on my Samsung 60 inch LED TV. It has a refresh rate of 120 HZ and is full HD 1920x1080. I assumed the laptop could handle it but this would be the first time I tried something like this, I always used to use desktops that I build for gaming till now. I ran Max Payne 3 all graphics to the max. Now on just the laptop screen I get insanely solid frame rates, no question about that. I tried using my big screen and the game chugs and struggles with FPS under 20. My question is is my TV wayyyy too big to handle gaming from the laptop or is there something I'm missing? I know this is meant to have an additional 3 screens running at once but I figured why not with the TV but I'm aware 60 inches is a lot of ground to cover.

    Hi,
What I think is that it's mainly because it's @120Hz, rather than standard 60. 1920x1080 should be easily handled, as even with my low end notebook (nvidia gt315, i3) I was using my TV @1920x1080 with 60Hz and the only fps drop was around 5 in game like Modern Warfare 2.
Also: it is capable of 3 screens, but not really for such heavy gaming. Even highest end GPU won't handle game at highest settings and with 3 screens; lower video settings a bit from highest and see how it goes. Also make sure that NB's screen is not going to be used while you use TV.

  • Where can I find GT70 Dominator Drivers

Does anyone know where I can find the drivers to MSI's laptops? I'm looking for latest Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 drivers for this GT70 Dom. Because I'm really considering dumping the Windows 8.1 OS and going to Windows 7. I keep trying to go to the support link on MSI's website, selecting the notebook and type of notebook and then GT70 Dominator, and when I hit Download link, it keeps taking me to the "Register your Product" page. I already registered and logged into the MSI support site. But no drivers in there.

    Greetings.
I don't have the Dragon Edition. Mine is the GT70 Dominator 2PC.
See when I go to support and select my latop options I hit "Download" and it's lacking any download options.
However when I go through your link, I see the option to select OS type from the Drivers tab. So through your link, I hit Support, and select my Laptop and now I can see drivers for the Dominator 2PC. So it seems your link works but MSI's link does not.

  • MSI GT70 Dominator GPU Throttling Issues

Hello everyone, I'm new to these forums, but figured someone on here might have an answer to my problems. I received my GT70 Dominator yesterday, and am having serious trouble getting it to run Titanfall properly. By default I used the Nvidia Experience recommended settings which were 1080p, and High across the board. This made sense because I bought this laptop to replace my desktop which has a Core i5 2400, 8GB Ram, and a GTX 760 in it. My GT70 has the Core i7 4800HQ, 16GB Ram, and the GTX 870M. The laptop's CPU should be more powerful, and the GPU should be within 10%. Titanfall runs at the same settings on my Desktop Flawlessly, but the framerate drop on this laptop is HUGE. The game will start around 60FPS, but will almost immediately start dropping in to the 20's. The FPS fluctuate constantly.
I've tried running MSI Afterburner to see exactly what speeds the GPU is running at under load. Unfortuantely it can't display the info yet (the 870m must be too new.) I tried GPUZ then, and it just says the GPU's specs (doesn't show moment to moment actual numbers.) However the MSI Kombustor software does display the Core speed and Throttle speeds. The Core Speeds almost instantly go down to 888Mhz, and drop off from there. The Throttle speeds go from 754Mhz, to 724Mhz. This is before the GPU even hits the 80C tempature limit. I've never seen this GPU over 900Mhz where 941Mhz should be it's baseclock (which I always thought was the minimum.) Running at 724Mhz whould net between a 20-25% performance drop, and would make sense why Titanfall can't keep up with my Desktop performance.
Has anyone else come across this issue? Has anyone found a way to disable, or change the throttling settings? If I can't fix this then the laptop really doesn't perform at the level I need it to.

    Quote from: hch;100907
NV changed the way GPU works on GTX TITAN and GTX 700 Series, maybe try to increasing the temperature target with some third-party software, then you can raise the performance.
Sorry GTX 870M doesn't work with this.
But the dropping behavior seems normal, cause it will start dropping when hits its temperature limit. that's probably why it acted this way.
Think you can try the methods other mentioned maybe it's the setting or driver version.

  • MSI's Latest- The GT70 Dominator Dragon-1886! Should I Buy?

Recently, I've been searching around for some gaming laptops to use as a desktop replacement. I've already cut out:
-Sager: Haven't seen many reviews, though it's VERY cheap and VERY powerful, I don't trust buying from a rather, smaller, company, than the other widely trusted brands(ASUS, MSI, Lenovo)
    and
-ASUS: Much more expensive than what you're paying for in hardware, though it has great cooling and build quality, the price/performance ratio doesn't cut it.
Obviously, Alienware is gone. As is Toshiba, Dell, XP, and unfortunately Lenovo (Lenovo makes pretty good gaming laptops, but not for me).
That leaves one top notch quality company left, MSI. Everyone knows MSI makes laptops designed specifically for gaming. They also know that they throw in insanely powerful specs at a cheap cost.
Now, I've heard all the talk about the cooling issues with MSI. I don't find that to be 100% relevant. The thing is, for the specs, MSI gaming laptops stay pretty cool, and with some better thermal paste, a cooling pad, and Turbo Boost on, you can cool the laptop temps dramatically by up to     20°C. Not only that, what I love about MSI is that they have incredible ventilation. It dissipates all of the heat away from crucial components, and the keyboard also stays nice and cool, too. I'm pretty sure I'm okay with cooling for now.
My budget is $1400, and I'll stretch the extra $50 at the MOST. The laptop I've been looking into is a bit different than the others. It is a GT70 Dominator 895, except with a 4810MQ and a red chassis. It's referred to as the GT70 Dominator Dragon-1886. I've found literally ZERO reviews on it, so here are the links:
    http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GT70-DOMINATOR-DRAGON-1886-17-3-Inch/dp/B00LJEJZSY/ref=pd_sim_sbs_pc_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=1KEM9PDSET0Y57QYCJ8F

So, at $1450, it comes packed with an Intel i7 4810MQ, a GTX 870m with 3GB VRAM, 8GB upgradeable RAM, a 1TB HDD, along with Windows 8.1, a 17.3" screen, and a 1080p HD screen resolution. I'll add an SSD later along with 16 more gigs of RAM to maximize the experience.
Now, you may be wondering why I didn't just go $50 cheaper and get the NORMAL GT70. The reason is because that at almost $1500, at the price you're paying, anyone deserves some eye candy with it. I love the red color to the chassis, along with the 4810MQ CPU. Sure the 4810MQ isn't that much better than the 4800MQ (about 3-5% better), but I don't care.
Now, I'd love to hear you're opinions on the MSI GT70 Dominator Dragon-1886. Should I bite the bullet and grab it? If I do, which I've basically just convinced myself I would, I'll put a review up on Youtube and add a nice, well written out response on Amazon and/or Newegg. I'll update this post in about January and give you the links to the review. Maybe, if I save the money to buy a high quality camera and do an unboxing. I hope by that time there'll be some reviews.
Also, it comes with a free mouse and mouse pad.
Leave your thoughts below. Please, do not address the fact that desktops are better, or ASUS is more bang for buck, etc. I've made up my mind. I just want to know what you guys think. Sorry for the long post! Had to get it in one try :P
    Cheers!

So I'm getting some positive reviews here :D I'm hoping that I'm making the right choice on this laptop. It seems very powerful for me. But I have a question: Would you guys prefer that red chassis? I really love the stealthy black on the others, but I also love the style of the red one. What do you orefer? And just to let you know, as I'm spending $1500, I'll be showing off a bit (hint).
And if you didn't realize dblkk, it's me from tomshardware.com

  • MSI GT70 Dominator FPS problems.

I recently bought the the MSI GT70 Dominator, and Ive been having some issues with frame rate. Unturned only runs at 25 fps sometimes, and I can't get minecraft over 30fps. League of Legends sometimes dips below 30 fps on max settings, but also sometimes gets above 60fps. Why are my frame rates so unpredictable, and why cant I get minecraft over 30 fps??
    Thanks for the help

Do you have GTX 880M? If so you should use 327.23 Drivers. If it is working fine with them then it is famous 880M bug. I suggest you to RMA laptop then and wait couple months to buy GT72 with 880MX or whatever GPU but not 880M.
And you need to google proper modded inf file for this new GPU in 327.23. Search at laptopvideo2go or ask somebody at some forums to add 880M IDs
However  if those drivers will not help and you already tried "launch with high performance Gnvidia GPU" then check temperatures. If it goes above 80-90 then it is throttling issues. Overheating.

    Hi there
I have just bought the latest GT70 Dominator Pro 3 days ago and problems already start to occur.
This morning the keyboards started acting funny as steelseries app will launch and led will light up under my keyboard, but the keys are not working, i have to restart the laptop 2-3 times for it to work.
Also the touch buttons at the top with fan(ramp up fan speed) and airplane mode, all the soft buttons stoped working, they were all fine yesterday. Maybe there is a bug or something but for a topend expensive gaming notebook I didnt expect something like this to happen!
Can anyone here help me to sort this out before I run to MSI to make a complaint.

  • GT70 Dominator Pro GPU question...

Well, this might be a stupid question, and I apologize ahead of time, I am still trying to learn computers and hopefully one day build one.  Either way, I have a GT70 Dominator Pro 2PE, running with NVidia 880M 8G GPU, was curious if this thing was able to fit and support running SLI 880M's.  I kinda want to upgrade.  I know one 880M is amazing and I run every single game i've come across on Ultra, I just want more power really.
    CPU: Intel i-7 4910MQ
    16G Kingston Ram
    256G Crucial Raid-0 SSD with 1TB HD
ANY help would be appreciated on this matter, thank you all in advance!!  Oh and, if it is able to support SLI, would it be plug and play or is some serious config required??

Thank you both for the replies!  They have been helpful for sure.  The main reason I did not go Alienware(I have a desktop from them) is because they were 1200.00 more for a computer with not near the spec's that I have with the MSi.  This computer is an absolute beast, as i'm sure you can see in my first post with the spec's.
As far as SLI, maybe I will save it for the desktop that I'm going to build and just use this for on the go gaming.  Shame that MSI didn't make it so it could handle SLI.
Random question, as new GPU's come out, will I be able to upgrade my GPU or am I stuck with this??  Also, I currently have to SSD's in Raid 0 but I've been thinking about adding the third SSD option they have on their site, would something like that be plug and play since I'm already in raid 0??
Once again, thanks for the replies, they have been super helpful!!

  • MSI GT70 Dominator Temperatures

Hello I recently bought a MSI GT70 Dominator with Intel i7-4810 MQ & GTX870M and i am really worried about the temperatures it is producing.
I am using the MSI Gaming Center program that came with the laptop to view temps and i discovered today that after playing GTA IV (with modifications) that the cpu temp was at 90C!
The GPU was around there too but it lowered quickly down to 50C and the cpu temp is still sitting at 70C right now..
I remember when i first got this thing it used to sit at 40c idle cpu and like 35c GPU
When i turn it on it stays at 40c cpu and 35c gpu but if i play GTA IV the temps go up fast.
I do not have a laptop cooler? would that help in this situation?
I just got it in May
    Thanks!

Honestly, you should be sitting at around 40C if your room temperature is 25C, when you're at your desktop.
During games, going up to 85C or 90C isn't terrible, but it shouldn't really get any higher than 90C, even with the newer 4th gen Core i7's and GTX7xx/GTX8xx cards.
You might consider doing a repaste job on the heatsink compound for the CPU and GPU. That can play a very significant part in keeping your temperatures lower. Just make sure you use a good silver based compound (like arctic silver MX5 for example), these will provide better cooling than normal heatsink compound.
