GT70 GPU Upgrade from GTX675mx to GTX780m

Hello,
on my GT70 0ND, is it possible to upgrade my GPU from a GTX675mx to a GTX780m? (I know they do mechanically fit)
Are there any issues I should know?
My BIOS version is E1762IMS.50U if that matters...
Oh, and the GTX780m I can get my hands on is an MSI card.
Thanks for reply.

There should be many many other threads on here, several very recent as well, about upgrading cards. You're going an easier route than most as both cards in question are relatively new, and going msi to msi card as well.
Making sure the vbios is correct for the new card is I believe the only thing other than the swapping out. Im not sure how your cooling is compared to the newer gt70's but id try and find a tear down picture of youtube of the inside of the newer and compare to yours. The 675m is a lower power gpu, and cooling would also need ot be less, while the 780m is almost the top end power using card. So make sure cooling is the same, if not pick up new heatsinks as well.
The only thing is, msi doesn't cover swapping graphics, they don't say you cant, but they wash their hands of it and don't offer anything other than drivers. Its really a 50/50 if it will work, and you could end up with a brick and 2 bad gpu's.
That said, ive repasted my cpu/gpu several times now, its fairly simple if you know a few thigns about it. If I was in your shoes right now, I would try. But I am in no way telling you to, nor saying it will work. I cannot do that, nor will I really be able to help if it doesn't work.
But my advice, would be get the vbios drivers for a 780m, and double/triple check your cooling vs newer cooling.

  • MSI GT60 GPU upgrade from MSI ?

    Hi there,
So just recently I was browsing through the interwebs, when I came across a thread when a guy was walking about how he upgraded his MSI with nvidia 770m to 970m. Now he had to do a minor adjustment to the 970m graphics card (sand down something in the gpu, not sure what though :S, something with aluminum block ? ), anyways after he did that, he just put the gpu back in this laptop and did the bios update and his laptop is working perfectly. What I wanted to know is why doesn't MSI give us an option to upgrade legally, I mean something like what they are doing with the gt72 or the gt80 when they are providing buyers upgrade kits. I would love to upgrade my gpu on my laptop, and I would happily give my money to MSI if they can make an upgrade kit for the GT60's and the GT70's. I mean the GPU is MXM and the thread clearly shows that it is upgradable so why not? I know this is probably a dumb question, but I really wanted to know.

Cost should be the same as the GT72 upgrade as both the heatsink and GPU are both already available to MSI to release.  At this point though who cares.  You can get a 970m and 980m cheaper than what MSI is selling their kits for.  And the 700m and 800m heatsink can be easily modded to work with the new cards.  So no big loss if they don't ever release an official kit IMO.  Just DIY and be done with it.

  • MSI GT70 0NC - upgrade from i5-3230M to i7-3610QM?

    Hi Guys,
Can You upgrade MSI GT70 0NC from i5-3230M to i7-3610QM? Has anyone of You tried that? How does laptop perform after such change? Is it stable?
i5 is unfortunately not performing well, when I try to play with virtualisation, so I'm looking if I can simply get more powerfull i7 onboard. Then I'll add 16 GB of Kingston RAM + SSD drive, and it should perform well... I hope.

  • MSI GT70 202US upgraded to win 8.1. Lots of issues

    hi,
i recently upgraded my msi gt70 202us from win 7 to win 8.1 to increase the performance on BF4.
i am facing alot of problems. i just hate this lan card. bigfoot killer networks has the most unreliable hardware and drivers. i cant get the software or the drivers to install. upon trying to install the latest version Bigfoot Networks Killer Network Manager 6.1.0.603 (64Bit) i am getting an error saying
"Your hardware is not supported on this version of windows. The installer cannot continue"
although this version is compatible with win 8.1 as said on the website.
I am trying to just install the drivers and that is not working either.
I tried installing the earlier version, that didnt help either.
and i cannot get the keyboard backlight to work or the eject cd tray option. can someone please help me with this.
and on additional note i would like to update the bios aswell. can someone please help me with that too. I havent updated my bios ever, but i have upgraded from win 7 to 8.1. as i read somewhere upgrading the bios on my model which came with win 7 is not suitable. is there a safe way to update bios.

If your laptop came with Windows 7 then you should install Windows 7 BIOS only. However if you want all keys work then install Firmware for Windows 8.
    Again, James, you are wrong.
Re-read your sentence again (if you can understand your own sentences).....
They do NOT need to install the Firmware (or EC firmware) in order for it to work in Windows 8. They need to stay with the Windows 7 EC firmware that originally came installed on their laptop. SCM and everything else work just fine under Windows 8 (and 8.1.....if it works at all) using the EC firmware for Windows 7. How do I know this? I have a Windows 7 based GT70 with everything working fine in Windows 8. Not only this, but it's been said over and over and over. Apparently still hasn't sunk in yet though for some people.
Its ok, these things can get very confusing for some people.

  • Photoshop Crashes after GPU Upgrade

I just recently upgraded my GPU from an nVidia GTX 460 to an AMD Radeon R9 290, and since then I've been experiencing problems with Photoshop.
Just after I upgraded my GPU, I did a clean uninstall of my old drivers, installed my new drivers (which I also updated to the latest version [13.12] just today), and tried using Photoshop.
At first, I was prompted with an error dialog saying that Photoshop could not detect my graphics card, so it has disabled OpenGL support.
I ignored the error, and proceeded to editing an image, but after a few actions Photoshop crashed, prompting me with the 'Photoshop has stopped working' windows dialog.
After restarting Photoshop, I went to Edit -> Preferences -> Performance and checked the GPU Settings box, which was now grayed out.
When hovering over it, Photoshop displayed a notification saying that there is a problem with my Display Driver, and that I should re-install it.
I re-installed my graphics driver, tried several different versions too, re-installed Photoshop, did a clean uninstall (with the help of the Adobe Clean tool) and re-install, but none of these actions helped.
While I was in safe mode (for cleaning up my GPU drivers), I launched Photoshop and realized that even though it told me that there was an error with my drivers, it would work just fine, without crashing after executing a few actions.
I also checked the Help -> System Info dialog for possibly obtaining additional information about the error, but the only relevant thing I can see is 'The GPU Sniffer crashed on XX/XX/XXXX at XX:XX:XX'.
I find this weird, because when I manually run the sniffer, it simply exits after printing 'snifferStart="XXXX-XX-XX_XX:XX:XX"'.
The last thing I tried doing was renaming sniffer.exe to something different.
This resulted in Photoshop re-enabling the GPU Settings box (but obviously saying that there is no GPU detected), and getting rid of the weird crashes.
However, it also resulted in various other glitches, like the main view not updating, the layer previews not properly working, etc.
Finally, I should note that I tried using both Photoshop CS6 (which I initially had installed), and a trial version of Photoshop CC.
My system specs are the following:
    OS: Windows 8.1 (64 bit)
    RAM: 16GB DDR3
    CPU: Intel i5 3570K
    GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290
Secondary GPU (Onboard): Intel HD 4000 Series
Currently Installed Photoshop Version: Photoshop CC 14.1.2 (x64)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

I noticed the same problem if I had my two R9 290s in Crossfire mode. If I turn off Crossfire, I get no error.
HOWEVER, as I have just upgraded from 2 GTX580s, and I do a lot of professional digital painting, I noticed using my Wacom Intuos5 (I usew the Cintiq 24HD with GTX580 at work), there was heaps of lag in painting with a standard brush. If I just did a slow stroke, the 'paint' would be lagging behind the brush 5-10mm onscreen. I tried setting the 'Use Graphics Processor' down to Normal and Basic, and it got worse. I turned 'Use Graphics Processor' off completely and there is no real discernible lag, feels very natural as with the Nvidia cards. However, because this is turned off, I loose any GPU 'accelerated' advantages like animated zoom etc.
    My setup:
    Catalyst Software Suite: 13.12
    Display Driver ver. 13.11
    OpenGL(tm) Driver ver. 6.14.10.12618
    Catalyst Control Center ver. 2013.1206.1603.28764

  • Graphics instability and crashing after upgrade from FF 32 to 33

Soon after upgrading from 32.0.3 to 33 (Windows 7), I was seeing occasional flicker-like split-second black flashes. (I *think* this was mostly when opening new pages, but I don't recall for sure...maybe also when scrolling). Then a few minutes later I was scrolling a page with my laptop touchpad and the screen flashed completely black, stayed that way for about a second, and then came back up with a Windows message that Intel Graphics had recovered from a crash. (Which is doubly interesting given that FF set to use my discrete NVIDIA graphics on this computer.). I haven't seen anything like this happen in the nine months I've had this laptop, with or without FF open. There was also a message that FF had crashed.
Then I restarted FF, and all was going OK, except that I believe I still saw a few split-second "in the blink of an eye" black screens as I opened new pages. But then I went to Google Maps, and was dragging a map upwards. But instead of the lower portion of the map moving into view, I only got a blank white screen. The further up I dragged the map, the more of the the screen that was blank white, until it was completely white. Then FF crashed again.
I thought the new FF native H.264 might be causing the issue so I disabled it and restarted FF. But then I went back to Google Maps, tried the same thing and had the same issue (but no associated crash, although I closed FF very soon after I saw the odd graphics behavior recurring so maybe I didn't give it enough "time to crash").
I re-installed 32.0.3 and all the issues went away. FWIW, I've had occasional crashes and slowdowns with 32 and other recent versions. (I could recover from the slowdowns just by restarting FF.) Most of those issues seemed to be associated with Adobe Flash. That behavior was an occasional annoyance but nothing of the magnitude of what happened when I tried FF 33. I don't know if this latter observation adds anything, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. Fyi, the laptop has 2.4 Ghz CPU (Intel i7) and 16GB memory.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Today when I noted that Lenovo still hadn't released an updated driver specifically for the Intel Graphics, I went back and installed a Lenovo NVIDIA Optimus update that I had tried 4 or 5 months ago but had subsequently reversed because it had created problems with Firefox. (Specifically, it was causing Firefox context menus to render slowly and incompletely.) Not only does the NVIDIA update no longer cause the FF context menu problem, it seems to have *solved* the problem I posted about here. It updated the NVIDIA driver ("GPU #2" above) from version 9.18.13.1269 to version 9.18.13.3302.
This makes some intuitive sense, since -- as I said above -- I have Optimus set to use the NVIDIA graphics with Firefox instead of Intel. (I had thought that, based on what I read in Lenovo support, the NVIDIA Optimus update might install a new Intel Graphics driver as well, but the Intel driver is still shown as the same version listed above (8.15.10.2725). (I don't know whether or not these driver numbers might be Lenovo-specific.)
Anyway, the NVIDIA Optimus update fixed my problem, so thanks for pointing me in the direction of graphics drivers. (I suppose there's also a small possibility that something had simply gone awry with my first update to FF 33, and that what really solved things was simply reinstallingl...)

After Upgrade from Lightroom 5.7 to 6.0 Lightroom becomes extremely slow. Especially after using face recognition feature. Switching off GPU acceleration doesn't help. Some note: Hardware specs couldn't be the problem, since 5.7 was reasonably fast (Core i7, Nvidea Quadro 600). Any ideas?

Are you applying a Develop preset in the Import settings? If so try setting it to None:
If the import is still slow try turning of GPU support in LR Preferences:

  • Upgrading from Premiere Elements 7 to 9 - compatibility problems

I have recently upgraded Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements from versions 7 to 9.  In slideshows created in version 7 there is a problem in Premiere Elements version 9.   Perfectly OK in V7, when using the Sceneline to view a slideshow only part of the project can be seen.  In a slideshow of 300 slides, when scrolling right as far as it will go, only the first 60 or so slides can be seen. I have contacted Adobe support but their "solutions" have made no difference.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi,
They did not seem to understand the problem.   I sent them a  screen print
but I still did not receive a reasonable solution.  They asked  me to
download another version of NVIDIA, change the Premiere preferences,  change the
3D settings, switch off GPU playback, recreate PluginCaches, disable
graphics hardware acceleration.   All of this had not affect on the  problem
whatsoever.  I have also reinstalled Premiere Elements twice - no  effect!
In the past I have had versions 5 and 7 with no problems with the
upgrades.   Upgrading from 7 to 9 has been very problematical and I  will think
twice before upgrading again in the future. I think that there  is a problem
with Premiere Elements itself and all this interfering with  graphics software
is a waste of time and "passing the buck".
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • S20, need upgraded PSU to support GPU upgrade, recomendations?

    Hello All,
I'm trying to track down a suitible PSU upgrade from the 625w AcBel, that was stock on my S20, to something in the 850w rangs (800 - 900). The 10-pin EPS (CPU power supply) on the MoBo is making finding anything aftermarket difficult. I see that the C20 has an 800w PSU. I'm trying to find out if it is compatible and if so the part #. The IBM Phone system has been a little les that productive so far.
Any product recomendation would be greatly appreciated (aftermarket or manufacturer spec).
Thanks for your time - NHC
BTW - The new GPU I'm trying to power is just a AMD 6970, it's crashing after about 45 min. of strenuous use. All drivers are updated, temps are good, and system checks all come up positive. Hence my hypothesis of being slihtly underpwered. The PSU calc. I ran came up with an estimated requirement of 560w so running the old 625 is cutting things a bit close.
    Thanks again
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I can just about guarantee you that power is not your problem.  From what I can find, the 6790 requires 2 x 6pin power connectors.  These connectors supply ~75W each.  With 75W from the board (by spec), this card theoretically maxes out at 225W.  Based on the specs of the card, I would say the max power is actually well below that.
S20 can easily support a 225W card, along with another standard 75W card as well.  So power on this rail is plentiful, and is unlikely to be the cause of your problem....especially since I don't think your card is anywhere near 225W.
As Erik stated, drivers is where you want to focus.  Desktop/gaming cards aren't workstation class cards, are are well known to be more buggy/crash-prone (though ideally not as bad as what you're experiencing).

  • K7N420 upgrade from 98SE to 2000Pro

I am running the K7N420 pro with XP2000+.  I can't seem to get the upgrade to Windows 2000 Pro from Win 98 SE to work.  I get imcompatible hardware errors of the NVIDIA GeForce 2 Integrated GPU, etc.  All errors have to do with the NVIDIA portion.  I am using the MSI drivers and utilities disk, can't find files.  I down loaded upgrades from MSI site, no help.
FYI, I am upgrading because of a random problem of warp time mode when entering the internet.  MSI's response was that the K7N420 was not designed to operate with Win98SE.
    Thanks

Several things could be preventing you from getting a good install, such as an incomplete driver set installation, etc. Right now your PC may be in an unstable state to do a good installation. The safest way to proceed (after backing up and vital info on the drive) would be to format the drive and install win2000 cleanly. You don't have to install 98 first, win2K should just ask you for the 98 disk during installaiton if you're doing an upgrade install. Win2K will then install a standard set of Windows drivers. Then you should update to the Nforce2 driver set.
    Good luck!

As per the specification of the GPU shared by you the minimum requirements is :
    Thermal and Power Specs:
    Maximum GPU Temperature (in C): 95 C
    Graphics Card Power (W)   : 60 W
    Minimum System Power Requirement (W): 300 W
As the system PSU is very low hence the PSU and also the Motherboard needs to be upgraded. I would also suggest you to visit the nearest service center for further details.

  • Will upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion create problems within Premiere projects?

I'm looking at the probability of upgrading from Mac OSX 10.6 to 10.8 (Mountain Lion).  I have to if I want to install or upgrade just about anything at this point.
I was hoping to wait until the latest Premiere project was finished to avoid creating possible discrepancies between how the project plays back before and after the upgrade.  I'll skip the details and just say that it might be best if I do the upgrade now and install a new GPU to help with the massive amounts of rendering/playback needed.  Will upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion cause any likely problems?  No other Adobe apps are involved with this project.
I'm running a Mac Pro 5,1 and Adobe CS6.  I have two separate clone drives of my current boot disk as well as a Time Machine back up.  So I can go back if I really need to.  I'll also make sure the project is saved manually elsewhere.
