GT70 takes longer to shut down with Windows 8.1
Hello all,
Hope at this time I am not the only one experiencing my laptop taking longer to shutdown before 8.1. I am wondering what I can do to lessen my shut down time for my laptop. I have a GT70-0ne. The shut down process before I upgraded took less then three minutes but now that I upgraded to 8.1 takes around five to six or even longer. I have read several ways to get rid of the longer shut down period is two make two accounts and delete one, change the performance options, and last revert back to regular windows 8. Hope to hear some advice on the best option to resolve the issue.
Lots of things can prevent Windows from shutting down. Even when I forgot to close my document file, Windows just won't shut down and won't log me off, instead it just dim the background and pop up some options.
Having Malwarebytes and Kaspersky running is not ideal, because they will likely to conflict with each other. Turn off 1 of them.
It can also means your hard disk fragmentation is high. Try to defrag your harddisk once in a while.
It could be one annoying features that Windows try to compensate its sluggish OS called hybrid shutdown (this is to hibernate your computer instead really shut down, so your computer can boot up faster in the next time you turn it on). You can google it.

Recently OSX takes longer to Shut Down is this a sign of impending failure?
Just in the last week or so OSX 10.5.1 is taking a longer time to Shut Down.
When I first got OSX Leopard the desktop icons would first disappear and then the whole thing would Shut Down about 4 or 5 seconds later.
Now, all the desktop icons disappear as soon as I hit Shut Down but the purple screen behind them is left lingering for a good 30 seconds before it finally closes and the little spinning wheel keeps rotating so something seems to be causing it to hang in the Shut Down mode.
Is this a sign of impending doom?
I only installed it about 3 months ago, and up until this started, it's been fine.
No other problems are apparent.annaesthetised wrote:

Does it make any difference if you manually quit all applications first?
I'm not sure if this would show you anything useful, but you might launch the Console utility and look for messages from the time of the shutdown process. -

In the last two days starting at 2:30 pm eastern time my firefox shuts down with my internet exployer and it will not open for 8 to 12 hours. Ive never seen this before. I deleted firefox from my control panel and reloaded it 4 times in 2 days and it still does not work right.
Simple, You have a hardware problem that only Apple can fix. So you need to take it back in to an Apple store and have it fixed by Apple. If it is still within it's one year warranty period it will be free.
If you khaven't bought the Apple care Extended Warranty, Applecare, then I suggest you do that before the standard one year warranty runs out. You can't buy it after that one year warranty runs out and to fix any Mac out of warranty is Very Expensive. -
Hp 300-1223 window 7 want shut down with power also the screen black
all in one 300-1223 that want shut down with the power button every still run's and the scrren stay black when power up .Using window's7. Help please
It could be the power supply, shorted device of any kind attached (bad printer, flash drive, keyboard, mouse, network connection), memory problem, video card fan not spinning and the video card could have overheated, bad capacitors (rounded or leaking a brown or dark substance). The first think you should do is make sure it is not under warrantee. If it is, contact HP. If it isn't, remove the cover and inspect the board for bad capacitors, fans not turning, disconnect all non essential items like the hard drive, DVD, floppy if you have one, all external devices (yes the monitor) and turn on the computer. Does it appear to stay on? If yes, shut it down by holding in the power button for 5 or more seconds or flipping the power switch on the power supply or pulling the plug. Connect the monitor and then one item at a time leaving the hard drive with your important data as the last item. If it didn't stay on. Try to use only one piece of memory and try each memory slot, try the next piece etc. If that doesn't work, the best guess is the power supply (if you have an ohm meter - test the power supply first). You can run a anti-virus/adware/spyware check by removing the drive and attaching it as a 2nd drive on another machine. You could also run a check disk while it is there. I like to download the hard drive manufacturer's disk certification test iso image and make a bootable cd. Boot off the cd and test your drive. It can fix bad sectors and some minor drive problems.

Mac OS X takes very long to shut down because processes are still alive
Hello everyone!
Since the latest update to Safari 5.0.1, iTunes 9.2.1 and Trackpad Update, the system takes unusual long to shut down.
The screen gets the usual blue, a spinning wheel appears and is there for about 20-30 seconds.
Before the updates, it was about 5-10 seconds.
When booting in verbose mode, it tells me at shutdown that some core system processes (among them launchd and other boot stuff) are still alive (or, as the OS says, "PID XXXX is still alive").
The only thing to workaround (which isn't the solution for forever!) is to run "sudo shutdown -s 0" on the console.
Is there a way to avoid this waiting for still-alive processes?
Thanks in advance!I have just restored my hard drive and now I too have this same situation. Have you been able to resolve it. If so would you be good enough to tell me how.
Cheers, -
Shutting down (with warning). Now dead.
I have read about other people's issues and this one seems slightly different:
My 15" G4 PowerBook Titanium seemed to be running fine. The battery (not included in the recall) had a normal charge. But then it was like I pressed the power button and that window poped up asking "are you sure you want to shut down"? I would race to say NO and some times it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. But then it would start back up so I didn't take it in (or take it seriously).
This went on for about a month until one day it shut down - with a sound. It sounded like one of those Emergency Broadcast System beeps. You know, long and steady.
I removed the battery and it started up for a second. Then it shut down agian (with out a sound this time).
It is about 3.5 yrs old and not under warranty anymore.
Anyone got any ideas?
G4 PB 15" Mac OS X (10.3.1)If you go to http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx and search on 'battery' you should find a battery status program that will tell you how many cycles you have. (I don't believe Panther included battery cycles in the system profiler).
If you haven't already, you should read this Apple article http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html . Lithium batteries should be discharged about once a month.
If you took the battery out and the system doesn't work with the power adapter plugged in, either the power adapter isn't working, or there is a logic board-related issue. Run your Apple hardware test to see if that indicates a problem. Insert your first OS X CD, reboot holding the option key down, choose Apple hardware test, follow directions, and choose the extended test. Does it indicate any issues? You can also use TechTools deluxe or Pro if you happen to have one of those programs.
Sometimes resetting the Power Management Unit will help. Directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449 -
How to auto boot after shutting down bootcamp Windows?
I have an instructional lab of 30 20" imacs that are running dual-boot, 10.5 & XP SP3. They have bootpicker installed to simplify the selection of which OS to boot to and auto-select Windows at 60 sec. (This is for new computer users and English as a second language users that are not familiar with the dual-boot setups.)
In both OS's we run deepfreeze to protect the configurations from change. I have set the Energy Saver settings in the Mac OS to start or wake at 7am weekdays. Deepfreeze for Windows is set to shut off the Macs at 10PM. This is also set by Deepfreeze in the Mac OS but since they primarily run Windows in this classroom the Mac's are shut down from the Windows side.
After making the auto start setting and shutting them down from Windows once they will no longer auto start the next day or ever again after that. I have tried using pmset to remedy this and have tossed the plist for the settings numerous times. Same thing every time. One auto boot and then none after. I would use a script from ARD to wake them but they are not in the same subnet as my ARD setup and my network group will not configure our switching to allow for it.
Does anyone know how to make the Macs boot consistently, automatically, every day I wish them to boot after being shut down from Windows by Deepfreeze.Supply pertinent information for quicker answers

Brand new K8T NEO-V board restarts instead of shutting down from Windows
Tonight I installed the brand new board from MSI. It is a replacement for a defective one. When I click on shut down in Windows XP Pro, it shuts down and then immediately powers back up.
ALL the parts are the same as before, the only change is the replacement motherboard. The new one is the exact same model as the old one, so nothing has changed. The old one powered off fine, it's problem was that the USB ports stopped working. I changed nothing in Windows either. I am using the defaults on the BIOS. Made sure to set it to defaults to try to fix this problem.
I also unhooked the reset and power buttons to see if perhaps they were defective. Also pulled out all the cards except the video. None of those things made any difference. It was a long-shot, but I tried them anyway.
Since setting the BIOS to default settings didn't help, I went into the power management section of BIOS and turned all the wake up features to disable. That also made no difference.
When I searched for this problem on the forum, I found two references about a year ago. They seem to have the exact same problem so I tried to do what the suggestions for those were. That made no difference. There was a reference to APC or something like that in Windows control panel. I am not familiar with whatever it said and I could not find it in the control panel. It should be set to power down when I tell it to though. I am not aware of any setting in Windows that would make it not power down and stay off.
It can not possibly be the other parts because they all worked fine with the other motherboard, but here is the list anyway. The power supply is an Antec 500 watt, AMD 300+ CPU, 2 sticks of 1GB RAM, Seagate 300GB PATA hard drive, ATI APG video card.

bretware and Hans, thank you for the replys. The BIOS was already set to power off after a power failure so I did not need to change it. I tried booting into safe mode and shutting off; same results. The network adapter is a VIA chipset, rather than the Realtek; the wakeup setting is unchecked and grayed out because I unchecked the option to power the adapter off when it is not used; that also made no difference.
I will now tear the machine apart, yet again, and breadboard it on the bench with a different power supply. I sent an urgent e-mail to MSI, hopefully they will respond in the next couple of hours. -
Computer shuts down with charge on battery and no warning
without warning and plenty of charge on my battery my mac book pro shuts down? if it just sits there in sleep unplugged it seems to run fine, but if its unplugged and i try to use it (with a charged battery) it shuts down with out warning. started about 3 months ago. Is the battery just old..?
It is almost certainly a sign that your battery is dying, timskins.
The problem is that when batteries deteriorate their internal resistance increases and they are no longer able to deliver power when it is demanded, even though they still have the ability to store it. They may chug along providing low power for quite a bit longer, but when your computer suddenly needs a bit more (because of increased CPU or GPU demand, or the HD spinning up or whatever) it is unable to provide it and the computer shuts down unexpectedly.
Think of it like driving a car with a bad fuel pump. Your car is driving along a highway with a full tank of gas. Its running smoothly enough. You put your foot down to accelerate up a hill or overtake a another vehicle and the engine dies because the fuel pump can't meet the greater demand for gas. The tank is still pretty full but the fuel can't be pumped in fast enough to keep it running in a high demand situation, so it shuts down.
See the section dealing with increasing internal resistance in batteries at http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-31.htm for more about such things, or http://www.buchmann.ca/Chap9-page1.asp for a longer, more technical, account.
Once this starts happening the only options are to get a new battery or to avoid any work that makes much demand on power (like visiting a "Flash" based website or, when it gets bad enough, even spinning up the HD from a stationary situation.) Unfortunately even with light use the battery will soon reach a point where the regular peaks of CPU and HD use will become too much for it and you will suffer more and more unexpected shutdowns until the battery is replaced.
My suggestion would be that you take the battery to an AASP or Apple Store, where they can quickly "stress test" the battery for you to make certain that in your case this is, indeed, the problem.

My computer shuts down with no error messege when i try to burn an audio cd
please help me my computer shuts down with no error message. If it helps i am using windows XP.
Put a standard audio CD in your drive and take a look at what is listed by Windows Explorer. You should notice something familiar. Take the CD that iTunes created and put it in a standard CD player. Does it work?

Hello, I have MacBook Pro and whenever I start Aperature 3 it stays on for about 5 minutes then it shuts down with an error of shutting down unexpected... anything??
Also does anyone know how to take something from one picture and add it to another in aperature?
Thank you!!!I had the exact same problem. Here is what an Apple Support person told me to do - and it worked like a charm!
Go to your APPLICATIONS Folder. Find a folder within that folder called TOOLBARS. Remove the ENTIRE folder. Once you remove that folder, your Aperture should work perfectly.
There is something in that folder that you don't need that messes with Aperture. Try it. Mine worked perfectly! -
Hi,
Our MacBook Pro has started to shut down with about 40% battery left. After it has shut down, I press the button underneath the computer and 2 our of 5 lights light up on the battery. I wouldn't mind if it just went to sleep but I totally have to restart it and lose everything I have been working on when it died. The computer used to go to sleep when the battery got to 0%, then I could plug it in and keep working.
I don't know if it's a software issue or a battery issue or a firmware issue.
Any tips would be MUCH appreciated.
Thanks a lot.I have read so many articles across the internet with people experiencing this problem. This is the conclusion I came to.
I could not calibrate my battery as my system would hard power down before it got anywhere close to draining the battery entirely. The last 10 cycles on my battery were attempts at calibrating. The most common cause would be because the battery in our macbook pro does contain something close to the charge being reported by the computer, but cannot deliver it. Your fuel gauge is probably not incorrect, especially when the leds on the battery itself show a charge that should be capable of running the machine. Even if it is not calibrated correctly. The internal resistance of the battery itself has compromised the batteries ability to deliver the amperage necessary to run our machines. After finally realizing this, I turned my screen brightness all the way down, and sat all my power settings to max battery life without allowing the machine to go asleep. Then, I went to sleep myself =). In the morning it appeared as though I had a successful calibration and the machine did not power down hard. Depending on how bad of shape your battery is in, this may or may not work. Either way, it didn't matter much. Even with my fuel gauge being correct, if my screen brightness was cranked up and I was doing anything somewhat processor intensive, my battery failed to provide the needed amperage and powered down my system hard again.
The battery really does have the amount of power it says, it just cannot deliver it as fast as needed. At a slower rate, it will work. A replacement battery is needed. I cannot explain the strange jumps/dips in storage capacity but would guess these numbers are a guide, and more than one environmental factor can change this number. Also, once the internal resistance builds up inside the battery and the inability to calibrate happens, it compunds the problem.
My machine is a first gen intel macbook pro. A few months after I bought it, I had battery problems and apple replaced my battery. My machine is 31 months old, it's battery is somewhere around 27. I tried to get apple to replace my battery and they told me no. I was 40% healthy @ 207 cycles. Many people complain about this but it seems reasonable to me, I didn't argue. I do believe my battery failed prematurely, however, it was due to a few factors and I do not think it was the batteries fault. My machine was one of those nice overheating first generation macbook pros. To make the matter worse, one of my internal fans stopped working. I knew this as my istat pro program showed me 1 fan @ zero rpm. I figured I had applecare and had work to do, so continued to use the computer for several months. I did quite a bit of video encoding and processor intensive work. When I would get to work in the morning, my granite desktop was really cold, however, after a half hour or so with the macbook pro running the heat would dissipate through it and warm it up nice and comfortable! lol, some may not think this is funny, but it worked well for me. I frequently had over 180 degree cpu temps and the bar above the keyboard being too hot to lay your hand on and keep it there. I am sure some of this excess heat contributed to the premature failure of my battery. The type of batteries in our machines are killed by heat, charge amount, cycles and age. Probably in that order for most users. So, can I blame apple because my unit ran hotter than it should have because their fan failed! eh, maybe, but I am happy with this laptop overall. I have never had a single laptop for more than 15 months and have had this one for over 30 now.
I ran across this site somewhere, it may have been another user on these forums, I cannot remember. http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-19.htm On this page, it talks about our batteries, the effects of heat and level of charge in combination with age. At 77 degrees F., charged to 100% (which is very typical of our machines, or close to it) after one year the battery is 80% as good as it was when it was new. At 32 degrees it is as 94% as good as new after one year. Jump up to 104 F. and the battery is only 65% as good as new after 1 year. Sometimes my computer is running for days and sometimes the environment is warm. Add that to the heat produced by the machine itself and I bet the battery sustained 100 degree temperatures for long periods of time. Just for fun, at 140 degrees and 100% charge in our lithium ion batteries, after only 3 months the capacity is only 60% of its new capacity.
Anyways, that is my battery story. Sum up. The inability to calibrate is due to the batteries increased internal resistance and inability to deliver the charge at a rate needed by your computer even though it appears healthy, or somewhat healthy. You may be able to calibrate by making your laptop drain less power, turn screen brightness all the way down, turn airport & bluetooth off, let hard disk sleep, and let it go. But that will not stop the hard shut down problem, although the fuel gauge will be more accurate. Think of it like this. a 100 gallon fuel tank on a car full of gas. The fuel gauge is correct, it is full. However, the fuel line connecting the fuel tank to the engine is made of a space age material that shrinks as it ages and is exposed to heat. Eventually the fuel line shrinks to the size of a coffee stirrer or small straw. When the motor is turned off the fuel seeps into the small straw. Start the motor, it begins to sip the fuel from the straw. Rev it up (encode video), the motor demands more gas but cannot get it. The motor stalls out (your computer shuts off). Same idea somewhat. Sorry so long

Best 5GHZ n-only configuration for AEBS?
Hi all, I'm trying to find the best configuration for my AEBS. I have a number of MBPs and MBs in my house but they all get terrible range. The speed is good when it's within about 30-40 feet, but it just drops off right after that. I've got a good a
