GT70 - Win7 / Win8 BIOS - Confused + Questions

I tried posting this in the BIOS forum but I didn't get any responses. I'm not sure if I should have posted here first.
I have a GT70 Dominator Pro 890. It came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. I don't want Windows 8.1; I'll be blanking the hard drive and installing Windows 7.
Since this computer has separate Windows 7 and Windows 8 BIOS's available for download, this leads me to think that I need to change the BIOS from the "Windows 8" version to the "Windows 7" version. But there seems to be conflicting information on the Internet about this. Some posts say you can and should do it, others say you can't and shouldn't do it.
So, my questions are:
1) Should I be changing / flashing the BIOS from the "Windows 8" version to the "Windows 7" version for running Windows 7, and
2) If not, should I continue to upgrade with the "Windows 8" BIOS version, even though I'm running Windows 7, and
3) Will Windows 7 have any issues or not run right since the computer is running the "Windows 8" BIOS version?
I *am* using two SATA drives in mirror RAID mode.
The other thing that confuses me, is how (even for each Win7 / Win8 BIOS version), there are again two different versions.
In the case of the GT70 Dominator 890 Pro, there is a version "50" for "WIN8 Default AHCI Mode", and version "70" for "WIN8 Default RAID Mode" (and a version 30 and a version 10 for the same two modes for Windows 7).
Wouldn't the Default AHCI mode or Default RAID mode be something that the user specifies in the BIOS? Why would there need to be a totally separate BIOS version for these two different modes? (I thought RAID already has AHCI enabled?)
Having four BIOS versions for the same computer is pretty distressing considering that I might brick it by installing the wrong one.

to 1: No
to 2: Yes
to 3: Should be fine

I have been reading in different places and came to know that I need to install SDK on one of the Win7, Win8 or Win8Pro; I tried getting more information on how to download, install & use the SDK from scratch but all my efforts went in vain.
Can anybody guide me in the correct path what I need to install and what sdk can I install to develop Windows App along with the Downloadable link either free or for purchase.

  • GT70-0NC custom bios questions (avoid GPU Throtthling and other stuff)

    Hi,
For a long time I wanted to have my own custom BIOS, but I wanted to know a few things about it's personalization :
First, is there a way to have a better fan behavior for a recurrent "cpu & gpu throttling" problem solving when I don't active the fan boost (that makes too much noise... so I can "game on" in silence with bad framerates... or I can enjoy an avionics turbine for good framerates) by changing my BIOS?
Secundo, my system have the raid unused (I got the 2 ssd's separated, first one for the system, the other one for my games, that gives me better loading times than the raid), so I would like to have a bios that wouldn't mind this, is that possible?
Troisièmement, I cannot give much for the donation, is there a respectful minimum? (mp if needed)
Then finally, I would like to have a custom image for the BIOS, what should I do to change it?
    BIOS infos :
    EC Version :1762EMS1 Ver 4.05
    BIOS Ver. : E1762IMS.30P
    IGFX VBIOS Ver. : 2126

Than you for reading, have a nice day.

yes its possible, but try MSI's version 1st:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162629.0
then based on this and your feedback we can set the FAN in desired new conditions.

not sure what you mean, if you don't use raid then just leave it as is. no need to switch to non raid version

    i have GT70 2OD-019US
i tried to update my graphic card driver from  http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-2OD.html#download
it didnt work it said not compatiable
im using latest beta driver from nvidia webiste
you guys have right stuff on the website
there is so much variation i didnt see GT70 2OD-019US link so i guess i could use downloads from GT70 20D
    maybe im wrong
download was hard to find and stuff not working
    support sucks

im confused just as you are.
I like to keep my stuff updated to the latest so i went to nvidia website
download the driver for geforce gtx 780m
i tried to install the driver but it wont let me install cuz it's not compatible with my card
so i went to the link above download the oem graphic card driver which im not too clear it's right one for my laptop
cuz it's doesn't say gtx 780 it says something like nvidia n14 chipset i have no idea what it mean
i installed it cuz that's all i can find for my laptop. it let me install but my geforce card doesn't work
my laptop switch over to intel graphic card and my nvidia card has red x on it under device tree
fortunately i found the latest beta nvidia work on my laptop otherwise i could ended up with non working video card
    the title
all the downloads im not sure they are right stuff for my laptop
i updated bios, firmware, and some of the driver
they are working so far i haven't found any problem with them
the graphic card driver make me think that maybe the stuff i updated might not be right for my laptop
im confused with many gt 70 series
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win8-win7-64bit-326.80-beta-driver.html
    Try that driver.
The problem with the 320.49 'release' drivers is that they don't include the proper information to work with the newer GTX7XXM video cards on MSI laptops. You need to download the latest beta drivers, as they have the proper information to work. The next release, whatever that might be, should work just fine then.
As far as the other drivers...
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-2OC.html#download
should have all the drivers you need. You can try going to the individual manufacturer website to update them too, such as Intel for the Intel iGPU.

  • MSI GE70 2OC BIOS update questions

Hi all, I have the GE70 2OC model with a Windows 7 installed on a HDD drive.
I want to replace the HDD for SSD and install Windows 8.1.
I thought that I might use this opportunity to update BIOS because that was recommended to me to fix throttling issues while gaming. But here is where I have a problem. On this site:
    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GE70-2OC.html#down-bios
there are different versions to choose and I don't know which one to choose. Right now I have the E1757IMS.509 version.
There is a warning not to crossflash the bios, for example from Win 7 version to Win 8 version because it may result in bricking the system.
    1. But which one do I have now? Is it the Win7 or Win8 version? I only know the number that I wrote above... Could you tell me which one to choose?
    2. Should I update the BIOS before replacing the disk and installing system or after?
    3. Maybe I should firstly replace the disk, install Windows 8.1 and then update the BIOS version to the one dedicated for Win 8.1?
    4. Which tool should I use to flash the BIOS so that the ME and EC firmware is also updated? Or is it a separate thing to do? I've read the stickies in BIOS section of forum but I'm completely confused, in every post there is something else written or recommended.
    5. Does it even make sense to update the BIOS? I mean, will it actually help with the throttling or was I wrongly informed? (I was told to do that by the moderator of Polish MSI forum but it doesn't make much sense to me...).
Thank you for your help in advance.

  • How to remove windows 7 safely from my dual boot win7/win8 pc ?

i have a pc which is dual boot with windows 7 ultimate 64 bit & windows 8 pro 64 bit, my pc had four drives C: D: E: F:, windows 7 is on "D:" drive & windows 8 is on C: drive(i had set win8 as current & default OS), now when i opened
disk management i found that the D: drive where win7 is residing is marked as
system, active, primary partition, now i don't want win7 anymore , i want only win8 on my pc, i want to format & get back clean empty D drive to use for other stuff (i don't want to delete the D drive partition), can any one explain me the steps
    needed to achieve this safely.

Since you've selected as default OS as Windows 8.1 you can go to disk management console and format the drive as required.
You can remove the Win 7 entry from boot loader:
    To launch msconfig:
    Click Start
In the Search text box, type msconfig
Launch msconfig by selecting it from the search results above the search text box.
    After msconfig is launched:
    Go to the Boot tab
Slect the boot entry you want to delete.
Click the Delete button and then click OK.

  • File sharing: Win7-Win8 vs Win8-Win8

1st... I have searched for help at Microsoft and, other than several people discussing this in the Microsoft forums, I do not find any actual answers
My wife's new computer runs Win8 while I am still on Win7 (both 64bit Pro versions, with all updates from Microsoft)
I am "in charge" of making backup copies of her important files, which I (try to) do from my computer via setting her folders up with File Sharing
The problem is that "some" of her sub-folders in My Documents do not update when she creates a new file (maybe all sub-folders, I have not looked at every one)
So, my question... is there anyone here with two Win8 computers connected through a router (mine is DSL modem with 4 Ethernet plugs) where File Sharing settings work properly?
This is enough of an annoyance that I am considering upgrading my computer to Win8, even though my current Win7 works perfectly in every other way
    ADDED
Also, I have always performed a clean install in the past... But, to save time and keep all my settings... how is the Win8 upgrade over Win7 process?

Went to http://search.microsoft.com/search.aspx?mkt=en-US&setlang=en-US and entered various search terms
Creating and joining a homegroup is explained, and is SUPPOSED to be easy... except when it doesn't work right... part of which is conflicting information on creating the homegroup in W8 and then joining from W7... or the reverse
I think I'm going to have to wait for a day when my wife is going to be out running errands, so I can make a backup http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-linux.htm of both of our boot drives, to be able to restore if I can't get a W8-to-W7 homegroup working properly
Then, last resort, is running the W8 upgrade on my computer so we are both using the save OS
Grin... all of this so I don't have to walk across the office and copy from a 2nd level My Documents--Plans folder to a 1st level folder to make copies of her files

  • Windows 7 - BIOS update question - Satellite A350-13A

    Hi,
I have the Toshiba A350-13A for Poland.
It came with Vista 32 bit system. I would like to install there Windows 7 64 bit.
So I have a question for BIOS update.
In my toshiba model driver section for WIN7 there is only a 32 bit BIOS for OS independent, but in the Vista section there is a 64 bit BIOS.
So shall I stay with the 32 bit BIOS or update to Vista 64 bit BIOS?
    best regards.

    Hi
Do you have any performance or notebook issues using the 32bit BIOS?
If everything is working properly then leave the 32bit BIOS on your notebook.
I would recommend updating the BIOS only if some serious problems would appear
    Cheers

  • Some bios related questions

ill make this as short as possible..im new to the 939 socket..and this k8n neo2 F...theres a few thing in bios i dont understand..and the manuall only tells you how to change them...not what the actually do
1st:spectrum spread...atm its disabled..i cannot enable it( i dont know y)whats this feature do?
2nd:HT frequency...atm its at 5x..what does this do..and what do the values mean(what is best to have set)
and 3rd:Adjust CPU ratio...its set to "Startup" but i have x4 and x20 as options..what does this function do for me..and whats best to have?
sorry if this n noob questions..but i wont go messing with things there i dont understand

Simple questions require a simple answer.
However, simple questions are more often cause for confusion also.
1: the spectrum checks for interferences made to your harddrive that can cause damaged data.Think of it like holding a magnetic source in front of your monitor, the screen will warp.
When overclocking it's disabled by default and greyed out.
Most users have this disabled (I have from the first pc that used this feature)
2:HT frequency=hyper transport bus.You got a 200mhz system and this bus can run at 1000.
Hence,5x200=1000   I have read that anything above 800 will show little to zero performance decrease.
So 4x200=800 and still fine, but if you plan to set a higher frequency for the cpu (starts at 200mhz) this sum is not x200 anymore but what you set.So setting the cpu at 250 means your multiplier (cpu ratio) multiplies with this.
So if your multiplier is 10 you get 10x250mhz=2500mhz.
But now the HT bus also kicks in,so you get 5x250 (instead of 5x200 which was default) =1250 <> no boot or bsod (blue screen of death)
Set it at 4x and you get 4x250= a perfect 1000 again.
3: cpu ratio is the multiplier build in the cpu.You can lower it on most modern cpu's.But the higher ones are usually locked.
To make things simple (a rather comprehensive answer opposed to my first line) everything travels over the all important cpu bus,and that's 200mhz by default(msi gives 201 after boot) so anything else multiplies with that. That's why the HT is at 5x and the cpu at 10x if you got for example a 2Ghz cpu.
    You have multiplier 12x200mhz=2.4Ghz
Your multipliers are unlocked so you can set manually lower and higher values. But this cpu is supposed to run at 2.4 so setting this higher gives you more mhz. but most likely you also need more vcore to make it work.
Keep it at auto and if you plan on overclocking it's best to read some threads about that first.
    Goodluck.

    (1)  Has anyone experienced an issue with the rear panel e-sata connections not working after the 1.4 bios update? The "front panel" connection still works, but not those on the rear panel.
    (2)  Why does the English language site only show bios versions 1.2 and 1.3 for download?  I had to get my 1.4 from a German language site if my memory serves me.  And isn't this the bios being used in the overclocking competition?
    (3)  If 1.4 is STILL in beta, any idea what is taking so long to make it official (maybe this e-sata problem, as well as other problems)?  Perhaps this board got lost in the shuffling in of all of MSI's newer boards?  I expected more frequent bios revisions (i.e., better support) than what I've seen so far.
    (4)  Sometimes, when I was using 1.3, my computer would freeze and throw an "02" code...which isn't in the manual (this was my reason for trying 1.4).  Any ideas?
    Thanks.

The board itself does not have a "front panel". Your case has that and the eSATA-Connector of the case feeds to one of the internal SATA Ports of the board.  Can you check which one it is connected to?  I am asking because there are actually three different SATA Controllers on the mainboard:
    - Intel ICH10R --> controlling the 6 SATA Ports that are angled to the back
    - Marvell® 88SE9128 --> controlling the 2 SATA-III ports
    - JMicron JMB362 --> controlling the "native" eSATA Port at the back panel
Basically that means that whatever internal SATA Port your front panel eSATA-Port of the case is connected to, it would be hooked up to a different controller than the native eSATA Port on the back panel.  Regarding the back panel port:  Make sure that the JMicron Controller is enabled in BIOS Setup and also make sure that it is set to operate in AHCI Mode.

This is where you are on the wrong track already:
Firstly, no MSI Product site (regardless) will offer BETA Releases for download.  That is why the only thing you find on the product sites for any board are Final Releases.
Secondly, you are probably talking about the German MSI Forum when you say "German language site".  Well, that is a user forum and yes, it has an ongoing thread to offer BETA Releases for download.  The German MSI Forum is a user-to-user forum, just as this forum here.  And in case you haven't noticed, this is a user-to-user forum as well, not MSI Technical Support.  AND(!) we have a BETA BIOS Thread for the MS-7666 board here as well, which can be found here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=140522.0
Thirdly, BETA BIOS Releases can always be obtained by contacting MSI Technical Support directly: http://support.msi.com/
    Quote
I had to get my 1.4 from a German language site if my memory serves me.
You are being somewhat imprecise when it comes to pointing to your actual BIOS Version.  An "1.4" Final release does not exist yet.  You are then talking about vA7666IMS.148 [=v1.4b8] in your thread title and then about v1.4b10 in your signature.  So, which one are you referring to?
    Quote
    (3)  If 1.4 is STILL in beta, any idea what is taking so long to make it official (maybe this e-sata problem, as well as other problems)?
Again, there is no 1.4 version yet.  There have been eleven (11) BETA Releases of the v1.4bxx-series so far.  There is no time plan for releasing final versions.  Nobody (not even MSI) will be able to answer the question when a final version will be released.
Also, at this point, it does not seem that it is definate that the eSATA problem you mentioned is even BIOS Version related.  Not only are you the only user that seems to have an issue with the back panel eSATA Port, but it is also possible that you forgot to enable something in BIOS Setup, or perhaps there some sort of defect with the port itself which cannot be fixed on the BIOS Level.

I expected more frequent bios revisions (i.e., better support) than what I've seen so far.
Again, there have already been 11 BETA Releases since the v1.3 final release.  These BETA Releases address numerous problems.  If you have any specific BIOS related problems that have not been addressed so far, then you need to contact MSI Technical Support and report the problem that needs fixing. MSI Technical Support does not have a crystal ball.  Stop expecting and do communicate: ---> http://support.msi.com/

    (4)  Sometimes, when I was using 1.3, my computer would freeze and throw an "02" code...which isn't in the manual (this was my reason for trying 1.4).  Any ideas?
Again, there is no v1.4 version yet.  Be more specific about which version you are actually using.  The main question is if you are still having this issue with v1.4b"whatever" or not.
