GT72 Adding SSD

Hello,
I have the GT72 2QE Dominator Pro (980m).
I bought the GT72 with 2x SSD in RAID 0. (2x 128gb).
Now i'm thinking about adding another SSD, but i can't seem to find the SSD that is stock anywhere.
If i'm right the SSD that's stock is:
Toshiba, THNSNJ128G8NU.
(source: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt72-dominator-pro-gtx-980m-owner%C2%92s-lounge.762800/ & software to see what components you have)
Is it possible to buy the SSD at msi by contacting them?
Or where can i buy them, since it's best to have the same types of SSD for RAID config, right?
Kind regards.
Ps. I live in the Netherlands (europe)

Maybe you can contact the service center of New Zealand first , they can give you the precisest information.
    Here is the information:

  • Pain-free way of adding SSD?

    Good day,
I run SJS DS 5.2 patch 4 on a Solaris x86 system. When this directory was first set up using idsconfig, no service search descriptors were added for the passwd service and rightfully enough, searches logged in the access log only refer to ou=people,o=mydomain.com,dc=mydomain,dc=com.
I've read of re-running idsconfig to add SSD's but that looks woefully mis-scoped; I'd like something more specific to be able to force searches for the passwd service to search another ou in the same o container.
I read about the serviceSearchDescriptor of the "default" profile and decided to set up the following on my test system:
    Attribute: serviceSearchDescriptor
    Value: passwd:ou=people,o=mydomain.com,dc=mydomain,dc=com;ou=otherPeople,o=mydomain.com,dc=mydomain,dc=com
Not only was I unable to log in using accounts from the otherPeople container, I also then lost the ability to log in using accounts from the people container.
I've scrapped this test system and am now rebuilding it but I'd like to know whether a pain-free way of adding SSDs exists. That excludes re-configuring using idsconfig.
    Cheers

    Ah well, no luck yet.
I'm running telnet 127.0.0.1 on the test machine using a test account edepa2 created under the additional container morepeople.
The DS access log on the test machine (pasted at the end of this post) shows that the morepeople container is beng searched and the entry edepa2 is being found but the telnet returns "login incorrect".
The serviceSearchDescriptor attribute is now set to:
    passwd:ou=people,o=mydomain.com,dc=mydomain,dc=com;ou=morepeople,o=mydomain.com,dc=mydomain,dc=com
    Any ideas?
    Cheers,
    Etienne

  • Adding ssd to an iMac early 2008

I have an iMac early 2008 with a hd by sata. I have also SuperDrive by pata/IDE. If I change the hd by a ssd by sata and a 1 tb hd by pata, I will increase the speed of my iMac? Another option is to install osx on a ext. FireWire 800 ssd with a box, which is the best option?

Adding the SSD for a boot/application volume will dramatically increase the speed of booting and application launching. Retrieving data from the pata hard drive will be slower than the existing SATA interface that your hard drive is on now. I don't know if that's enough of a speed hot to actually notice. The SSD will make the computer feel MUCH faster, I put one in my MacBook and it feels like a completely different machine, it's the single best upgrade I've ever done.
I don't know how much an SSD in an external FireWire enclosure will speed thins up but I'm considering the same thing as I don't want to open my iMac and risk messing something up.

  • Adding SSD to G400S

    I bought G400S with windows 8
can i added the SSD storage in this laptop?
if could, how should i done this without replacing the HDD?
i read about the PCIE slot for G400S, so i've been thinking about the mSATA PCIE SSD storage..would it fit?
    thank you

I dont think the G400s will have enough room for a Mini PCIE SSD but yea you can replace the HDD with an Msata SSD

  • Procedure for adding ssd to i7 mini

I am adding a 256gb SSD to a new i7 2.6Ghz Mini. I have the drive, tools and ribbon connector plus the video instructions.
I plan on keeping the Apple 1tb drive in place, so the current OS will be there. I will also expand the RAM to 16gb.
What I am unsure about is the recommended procedure to move the OS entirely to the SSD and set it up as the boot drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Other World Computing links to this information in the fine print on their 2012 Mini Data Doubler Kit video page.
Looks like it applies directly to my circumstances ... I guess the real question is what makes more sense, to run the SSD as a fast boot drive and the 1TB as on board storage or try to create a Fusion Drive with a bigger SSD than Apple provides. Fusion benchmarks looked pretty good, so will give that some consideration. Thanks All.
The “Fusion Drive” option for the 2012 Mac minis can cause some severe data loss if you’re not careful. It’s a bit of a “perfect storm,” but it’s worth noting if you’re adding an SSD as a second drive in your Mac mini.
This particular instance affects you only if:
You are upgrading a 2012 Mac mini.
That 2012 Mac mini shipped with Mac OS X 10.8.2
You are adding an SSD to this Mac mini as a second drive, alongside the existing Hard Drive using anOWC Data Doubler Kit.
If your installation involves all three factors, then you need to pay attention, as your installation will be affected. If one or more of these factors are not involved, then you don’t have to worry, you can proceed as normal. If you are one of the affected Mac mini owners, then installing an SSD is a little different. The preferred method is the “Internet Restore” method. Perform the following steps in order to format your SSD and transfer your OS and data from your original drive.
Make sure your data is backed up, just to be safe.
Install your SSD in your Mac mini, following the instructions.
Restart your computer and boot to the internal hard drive like normal.
You will likely get a dialog box stating that a drive is “unreadable.” Click the “Initialize” button to open Disk Utility. If you don’t get this warning, you can find Disk Utility at Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app
Select the SSD from the list on the left side of the Disk Utility window and Click on the Partition tab.
Select “1 partition” for the Volume Scheme, set the format to “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and give the drive a name. You can then click the “Apply” button to format the drive.
Once the drive is formatted and shows in the Finder, you can then shut down.
Make sure you’re connected to a network. While it’s preferable that you connect via Ethernet, you canconnect via AirPort; it will just be slower.
Restart to the OS X Recovery Partition by holding down Command-R until you get the Recovery Partition’s main window. It is very important to note that you should not use the version of Disk Utility in the Recovery Partition; it will see the two separate drives as a “damaged” Fusion drive and try to repair it; allowing it to do so will destroy your data.
Select the option to “Reinstall OS X” choosing the SSD to install the OS on. If you’re connecting via AirPort, you may be prompted to connect to your wireless network.
Follow the prompts to install. The actual downloading and installation process may take a while.
After the OS is installed, follow the prompts to set up your computer. When asked, choose the option to import your data from another drive and select your original drive as the source.
Once the migration is complete, your computer should boot to your SSD.
You can use the Disk Utility like you did before and format your original hard drive as desired.
You will now be able to use your Mac mini normally.
While the above method is the preferred way to do this, if you do not have an Internet connection, you won’t be able to reinstall your OS this way. In this instance, you will need to use the “External” method.
Install your SSD in an external enclosure (USB or FireWire) and connect it to your Mac mini.
    Boot to your Hard Drive.
Restart to the OS X Recovery Partition by holding down Command-R until you get the Recovery Partition’s main window.
Enter Disk Utility – since the SSD is in an external enclosure, you don’t need to worry about Disk Utility trying to create a Fusion drive.
Click on the SSD in the list on the left and select the Restore tab. Drag the original drive’s icon from the left onto the “Source” field. Do the same with the SSD into the “Destination” field.
Click the Restore button to copy all your data over to the SSD, then shut down.
Restart holding down the Option key. Select the SSD/External drive as your boot drive and continue.
Use the Disk Utility in Applications/Utilites to format your hard drive as desired.
Shutdown, remove your SSD from the external enclosure, and install it in your mini.
Once the SSD is installed, you should restart the mini and login. Go to to the Startup Disk preference pane and select your SSD as your boot drive.
You can now use your Mac mini normally.
No matter which method you use, once you have both an SSD and a platter-based drive installed in your Mac mini, you should not use the Disk Utility in your Recovery Partition on those drives; it will see those drives as a “broken” Fusion array and try to repair it, destroying your data in the process.

  • Adding ssd disc as system in GT70

I got gt70 0nd with single hdd disc. I bought ssd and want to make from it system main disc.
Unfortunetly msi is not delivering windows cd with computer, only recovery partition.
One way is to clone partition. Is this the only solution? I have read that this decrease performance of ssd disc(while best is fresh instalation with trim mechinism detected from start)..
Any ideas? Solutions? Any way to get working iso?

Warranty is not voided opening the case to add an SSD or replacing/adding HDD, upgrading RAM. As long as you don't damage anything doing it warranty is fine. Sticker is just there to make clear that touching the inside is a sensitive thing to do that could ending up with a dead machine without warranty. If you want to reassure contact MSI: >>How to contact MSI.<<.
Next time don't hijack other topics or post in all caps: >>Please read and comply with the Forum Rules.<<
Apologies, should have just asked about changing drives, but the seals do clearly state that the warrantee is void if the seal is broken. The documentation also states that the computer has to be returned to do this. I'll contact MSI as you advise.
This is for basic GT70 and I'm trying to do the same thing, install  SSD for system drive, best buy had 130GB SSDs for $89.00. Thanks for  your feedback.

  • GT72 2QD SSD Size?

Hi, can anyone please tell me the size of the SSD slot in the GT72 2QD? Will it take 2280?
    Thanks.

    Sorry finally found the answer.
    The GT72 2QD takes 2280 sized M.2 Sata SSD.

  • Native apps lost when adding SSD; transfer between drives?

I recently added a SSD and lost iPhoto and iWeb that came with the Mac originally.  I have the original drive as a second drive, but I would like to run them from the SSD with the files on the 2nd drive.  How can I transfer the app's from my original drive to the new SSD?  I guess I really want to backup just the iPhoto, iMovie and iWeb apps and restore them to the new SSD, leaving the files on the old drive and point the app's to the big photo and video files on the old drive that I'm just using for storage.  Problem is I don't have the original install disks and I'm too cheap to buy the app's from the app store.  Any ideas?

iPhoto and iWeb are part of the pre-bundled software that came with your computer. They will be on the original discs. Since you don't have them you will not be able to reinstall the applications. You will need to purchase replacements from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
For Mac App Store: Apple - Support - Mac App Store.
For iTunes: Apple - Support - iTunes.
Transferring the installed applications from your old drive to the SSD could probably be done using Migration Assistant. However, instead of migrating everything, just migrate Applications and support files.

  • Added SSD but now it freezes regularly

    Hi,
I've added the SSD and moved the HDD to the optical bay.  All appears to have gone well, it is definitely quick, but it freezes pretty regularly.  I did it this afternoon and it has frozen about 6 times, each time requiring a reboot.
The approach I took was to lone the HDD to the SSD after installing and as I say, it seems to have worked other than the freezing.
    Anyone experienced this?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    - First reset the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - If still problem,  connect the iPod to your computer. If iTunes sees the iPod restore the iPod via iTunes.
    - If iPod not shown in iTunes, see if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow it to show in iTunes so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
If it still cylce one and off, disconnect the iPod and let the battery fully drain. Then charge and try again.

  • Adding SSD cache to Envy 4t-1000

Hello, a couple months ago I purchased an Envy 4t-1000 laptop, I have since then installed an additional 4GB of RAM and have began to wonder wether it would be possible to add an SSD (in addition to my current Hard drive). I know Envy laptops can be configured to include such an SSD cache when purchased directly from HP but would it be possible for me to add it myself? Also, does anyone know the specifics (i.e. size) of the SSDs used on 4t-1000s? Thank you for any help.

See the solution here for some help and yes you may do it your self.
     http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/New-HP-M7-How-to/td-p/1729315
Laptop hard drivers are pretty much a standard size of 2.5 inches. Some of the larger ones are thicker because they contain more platters, but when dealing with and SSD that doesn't really apply here any way.
Post in this thread if you have any questions.
The SSD is put in place of the standard drive and your old one can be then used a storage in the secondary bay.
If you buy the drive from HP chances are that it will come with the caddy and cable.
If you purchase a retail one you will then have to buy a caddy and cable. If you need help with this I will need your full model number.

  • Mac Mini – can't see Internal HD after adding SSD-.

I have installed a SSD in my brand new Mac Mini – it was shipped with the 1TB drive.
I booted up and got the blinking Question Mark Folder.
    • So, I booted up with option held down; I could see the SSD and the Apple 1TB (which has Mavericks system installed).
    • No problem I thought – it probably needed me to choose the start up disk
    • Opened Disk Utility; I can see both drives; that's good! I thought I'd format the SSD while I was here, so I did.
    • Quit out of Disk Utility to get Start Up Disk options – both discs missing. Oh, dear.
    • So booted up again and did an internet recovery; putting a system (Mountain Lion) onto the new SSD (whereas before it was an empty, erased Disk).
    • This took an hour over the net but it worked. I booted up with it and it very fast – but the Apple internal 1TB is missing.
    Weird part:
    • Opened Disk Utility on the computer; I can see only see the new SSD; so I opened  Disk Utility to see if I could view the internal, nope - not there.
    • So I thought I would be scientific and boot up again holding OPTION down; opened disk Utility; and viola – there's both drives; each with a system and OK according to Disk Utility.
So in a nut shell – when I boot up with Disk Utility holding OPTION I can see the internal BUT when I am booted up as normal with the new SSD; and open Disk Utility; I can't see the internal.
Shall I just erase the 1TB internal and start again? I spent a bit of time Migrating my old machine to this 1TB; so would like to not to have to do that gain.
    Thanks
    Barry

    Hi 66 Firebird,
    I have similar issue.
I can see my Samsung 840 Pro 256 SSD and original 1TB hard drive in Internet recovery mode. But it did not allowed to format 1TB drive.  As soon as software installed into SSD and booted from it, my 1TB vanishes.
    Do you have any luck?
What did you to get your 1TB back?

  • Best use adding SSD to speed up Photoshop?

This is actually a multiple question post.
My aim is to try and cut down some time on Photoshop, mainly when using big files (over 2 or 3Gb) not only when reading and saving but most importantly applying adjustments or modifying image.
Almost every other day my daily working files go to 2 or 3Gb each and its painfully slowing me down the time it takes to sometimes apply some transformations let alone the process of saving as safeguard with regularly over the day.
Today was working on a 10Gb file and it would take Photoshop close to 15min just to open the file...flattening the image would take around that too and saving a little over 25min.
I know on Mac's its a pain in the back to move the system swap files to another disk (although theres an app that supposedly does that for you (Xupport).
I just find it hard to find out what best use I could make for a SSD I would add to my existing configuration that could speed up Photoshop on Mac:
    1. Install system and apps?
    2. Use system swap and leave system+apps in other HDD?
    3. Use for Photoshop scratch disk?
    4. Any of the above in same SSD?
    Other pertinent data:
Every project once completed is moved to a backup USB disk so the durability/reliability of SSD isnt really a problem althought I aware SSD has some issues regarding tearing over multiple re-writting over time.
    Mac Pro dual quad-core 2.8 (MacOSX 16.2 + Photoshop CS4)
    8Gb DDR2 Ram (soon to be 12Gb)
1 SATA  320Gb for data in use + system +apps
1 SATA 500gb for  general purpose data and backups before going to external HDD plus Photoshop scratch disk
Ty in advance for any help.

You have plenty of system to throw at Photoshop. The application ought not to slow down to the point of un-usability but I'm certainly not working with images at that size.
Here are the techniques I have used to make almost all applications faster:
Add more RAM. That way, any application you use won't have to be swapped out to disk if you are running lots of applications.
Move OS X's swap drive to something faster.
In the case of Photoshop, move Photoshop's swap drive to something faster with lots of space
Get a hotter graphics card that your applications will take advantage of.
With respect to #1, Adobe's Photoshop is a 32-bit application. Photoshop will benefit from your Mac not using its swapfile as additional RAM but Photoshop will not see any more than 4GB of RAM and will probably see a lot less than that (most 32-bit applications use something like 2GB).
With respect to #2, here's how to do this:
Edit the file com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist, located in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons. Replace the/var/vm path with the full path to your swap partition. In my case, the entire plist ends up looking like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
                    <key>Label</key>
                    <string>com.apple.dynamic_pager</string>
                    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
                    <array>
                         <string>/sbin/dynamic_pager</string>
                         <string>-F</string>
                         <string>/Volumes/Swap/.vm/swapfile</string>
                    </array>
                    <key>OnDemand</key>
                    <false/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
Save and reboot, then check your new swap location is being used with this command:
    ps -wax | grep dynamic_pager -m1
Finally, you probably want to clear out any old swapfiles from /var/vm:
    sudo rm -rf /var/vm/swapfile*
If you have two SSDs, use one for OS X, the other for Photoshop. And remember, for an 8 GB file, Photoshop will want a lot more than 8GB as its pagefile.
You will want to experiment to see what methods work best for you.
    Good luck.

  • Adding SSD to MBP?

I want to buy a new MBP (15", 2.2 GHz model) for University.
I wish to put an SSD in it, for performance and durability.  After some reading online, I found that Intel's SSDs generally have higher reliability (at least, in the tests I saw) than Toshiba's (which I believe Apple uses), so I wish to get a 320-Series Intel X25-M SSD, likely at 160 GB.
Before I make the purchases, though, I have a few questions:
    1) How difficult is it to install an SSD at home, replacing the built-in HDD?  If it is difficult, could I get it installed at the Apple Store?
    2) Is there a defined standard for laptop disk size/connections?  Is there some specific identifier I need to look for to ensure that the SSD I purchase will work with an MBP?
    3) Would it be advisable to use only an SSD and no HDD?  (I've heard horror stories about SSDs crashing.  Obviously, I back up files, but it'd still be a massive pain to have to replace a drive and restore a backup.)
    4) Does TRIM support make a significant difference in terms of performance? Should I wait for Lion to bring TRIM to Intel drives, or get a drive direct from Apple that already supports TRIM with Snow Leopard?
    Thanks very much in advance!

There are a lot of messages in this forum on that matter of the SSD.
If you buy the MBP 2011 from Apple with the ssd option, you will have the MBP with a SSD (probably Samsung) WITH TRIM SUPPORT (in Mac OS10.6.7).
If you want to buy the cheapest version HDD in it and replace the HDD for a SSD afterwards, it is simple to do that, The best way is to buy with OWC: they deliver with tools and good instructions. Also the MBP Manual gives instructions to do that; also iFixit has good instructions. Good SSD with Trim support are Crucial, Vertex, Mercury, etc.
If you do not want to reinstal OS after installation, have an external holder (like Icy Box) to put your SSD in before installing it and clone the actual HDD to the SSD; then build it in.
If Trim support is not done automatically (check with System Profiler), you can do it easily with the program Trim Enabler (which hacks the IOAHCIFamily.kext file).
    have fun,

  • Adding SSD to ASA 5555X or 5525X - general questions

I am prep'ing two HA pairs of ASAs for FirePOWER. I have (hot) installed the SSDs (two in 5555X and one in 5525X) and did not see the SSDs in SHOW INVENTORY. Upon reading the instructions in the ASA hardware guide, it says that you must reload the ASA to recognize the SSD. I reloaded the non-active 5525X and the SSD still did not show up in SHOW INVENTORY.
    Questions:
    1) when you install the SSD, is the old non-SSD drive still active? (Yes, because the non-active ASA reloaded with no problem, but please verify)
The instructions say to "image" the SSD. My thought was that the FirePOWER image would be the only image I would put on the SSD and I would continue to use the non-SSD for other files like the ASA and ASDM images.
    2) Can you use both the non-SSD and SSD drives in a single ASA?
    3) Do I need to move the files from the non-SSD to the SSD? From the instructions, it seems both are referred to as DISK0: so I'm not sure how to reference both drives individually. How would I load the FirePOWER image onto the SSD if both non-SSD and SSD are referenced as Disk0:?
The SSDs lights are illuminated after the drives were installed.
    Thanks.

I do believe ASA 9.1(1) is required as a minimum. See the matrix in Table 3 in the ASA compatibility matrix.
Also the release notes for ASA 9.1 note under "New Features in ASA 9.1(1)" that they introduced support for the SSD-based CX SSP.
You have to move up to at least 9.2(2.4) for for FirePOWER Service module.

  • Adding SSD to DV7 6178us

I just installed a 256gb Crucial M4 in the second bay.  Cable hooked up, looks fine.  Device manager shows the drive, lists it as working properly in location 1.   However, it is not shown or listed in My Computer along with all the other drives.
My end goal is to use the SSD as my operating system drive and move the original HDD to the second bay for data.  I read that I need to enable AHCI in the bios, however I did not see that option.  Right now I have the SSD installed in the second bay, recognized by device manager, and that's it.
Any suggestions, or links for good tips?

    Hi,
AHCI is enabled by default in an HP bios.
You probably need to format the new SSD - try the following.
Hold down the Windows Key and press R.  Into the Run Box type compmgmt.msc and hit enter.  Click Disk Management in the left pane and let the drives load up.  Right click on your new SDD and select Format to start the Wizard and choose a 'simple new volume'.  Windows 7 will assign a Volume Label so if your happy with this, just leave the default one.  File system is normally NTFS.  Allocation Unit Size should be left as the default value.  Select the option to perform a Quick Format if it is not already selected.  Leave any other settings as default and click Ok and Ok again to start the process.
When this has completed, your new SDD should now appear when you look under Computer.
    Regards,
    DP-K
