GT780dxr add 2nd hard drive - AHCI mode

I have a gt780dxr with one drive, ocz vertex 3, 2nd bay is empty.  The bios is set in raid mode which is correct.
I am trying to add a 2nd hard drive and it isn't recognized in the bios.  It is seated properly and does work as I can use it on other laptops.
I have 3 questions.
1. Is there anything special that needs to be done when installing a 2nd drive on this system?
2. I tried to change the bios to ahci mode and get bsod.  Is this normal?  Should I be able to move from one setting to another.  I really don't care about the change but thought it may be needed to install the 2nd hard drivve.
3. There is a rubber block to keep the 2nd drive seated properly.  I don't think it is sufficient.  Any other ideas or where I can get a hard drive caddy/enclosure.
Thanks
Jim

I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference. Simply make sure the boot order is correct in the BIOS.
I'm not familiar with hard drive mounting in notebooks so can't comment much. If you post a picture of the bay with the drive in I may think of something if I can.
The fit surprised me also, the samsung is 9.5mm and the bay is 12.5mm, i believe.  Plus there is nothing really to hold it in.  I will work on a picture.  I guess I could get some styrofoam and put it in there to keep in place?  Any other products that would be safe?
The more important question...
There is no issue with the interface speed?  I know there is 6gb and 3gb?  Not sure if both controllers are 6gb?

I need to add a second drive to my powermac g5. I have the stock 80gb drive in there and want to get the largest, fastest drive the g5 will accept for the second slot. Does anyone know what the largest drive size i can put in there is? 500gb acceptable? Any recommendations on which one to buy/where?

You could put your install disc on a USB Flash drive with Disk Utility. Also, here is the USB optical drive enclosure I bought. He raised the price a few bucks. Mine ran $10.00 with the shipping.

Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same. • Looking for a 2nd hard drive on DV9700

I want to add a 2nd hard drive to my HP dv9728ca. Are there any specs I should look for? Right now I have a 160GB hd, and the manual ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295898.pdf ) seems to indicate my only choices are 120GB or 160GB. According to the service manual, if I want a 200GB or 250GB, I can't use my 160GB anymore. The possible options are as follows : 250x2 (5400), 200x2 (4200), 160x2 (5400), 160+120 (5400), 120x2 (5400 or 7200, but both the same). Now I've upgraded computers before, even built some from scratch, and I've never seen this type of requirement. Is this for real? I've read a post from someone saying he had trouble with his new drive which was bigger than his original one. What about the 1.5GB/sec vs 3.0GB/sec? My understanding is that the 3.0 is downward compatible, but some seem to pretend you have to set a jumper on the drive to bring it down to 1.5. Any help would be appreciated. And what if I add a 7200rpm drive instead of 5400rpm? I don't see how these should cause any trouble, but from looking around it seems HP motherboards are very specific as to what they'll let you do. I already purchased the caddy kit, all I need is the hard drive, but I don't want to end up with one that's not compatible.
If anyone's added an additional hard drive to a dv9700 series laptop, please let me know what model you chose (brand, capacity vs what you had, 5400/7200, 8MB/16MB).

Hi, I have dv9730ca laptop myself and I have 2 160GB seagate 5400rpm 8MB hdd's, they have an external data transfer rate of 300MB/sec and an internal data transfer rate of 1.1GB/sec. They do get up to around 55oC (i use cpuid - hwmonitor to check this out) and I have heard using the 7200rpm hdd's can increase the heat output so I would recommend using the 5400rpm hdd's instead. The best way I have found to get over the heat issue from any laptop is to use a targus chillmat, it has 2 fans and runs off a usb port. I hope this info helps you out

  • Rescue and Recovery 4.5 Incremental backup reverts to LOCAL when i have 2nd hard drive

    I have 2 hard drives.
    Installed R & R 4.50.
Set 2nd hard drive as Store Location.
Initial "scheduled" full back up goes to my D drive. (This does NOT use the windows task scheduler).
During next Incremental  backup (set by the back up at this time setting), it reverts back to local drive,
and does another FULL backup to my C drive  folder RRbackups.
Problem is windows Task Scheduler is NOT set, under TVT folder  task, to backup up to 2nd hard drive.
I edited Task Scheduler to change folder TVT, task launchRnR, actions  from:
    start a program %R%/rrcmd.exe BACKUP location=L name=Scheduled   scheduled
    to:
    start a program %R%/rrcmd.exe BACKUP location=S name=Scheduled   scheduled
otherwise, all works fine. Such a Major bug. Anyone else having this problem?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I recently Reinstalled R and R 4.50. Same bug as i noted.  The entry in the  windows task scheduler is INCORRECT.
For those backing up to a 2nd hard drive, use my Solution.  The initial BASE backup will go to the correct
backup location.  Subsequent Incrementals use the Task scheduler to kick off the backup .. I do not know what
the parmeter is to point to a USB drive.  Location = S is the correct parmeter to back up to a 2nd hard drive.
    Control Panel>Administrative tools>task scheduler>tvt folder
Entry "LaunchRnR" select this entry.  Right click this entry. Properties.  Choose the Actions tab. Then EDIT.
You will see ADD arguments(optional);  entry block will contain
    BACKUP location=L name=Scheduled scheduled
Change location=L to location=S.  Click OK.  Next run should go to 2nd hard drive. Major Flaw!
    ===
During Initial 1st time run of R&R, it will ask. you have NOT taken a backup, back up now?  Reply NO.
If you reply YES, it will go to your C drive, since you have not changed your backup location.
If you replied YES, you have a base backup on your C drive.  If this happens, Delete the base back up.
Go to set schedule parm, choose time and day, and location 2nd drive.  It will then ask do you want to back up.
Reply YES, IT will go to the 2nd hard drive.  THEN the bug shows up when incrementals start.
Change windows task scheduler as noted above.

  • HELP-2nd hard drive

How do I get Solaris to recognize and use my 2nd hard drive.
It is installed and recoegnized by the BIOS, the previous OS had no difficulty seeing it.
It's not that Solaris cant' it's that I don't know how to tell it to.

Run "devfsadm -v". This instructs the solaris kernel to
search for new hardware using all available drivers.
Device nodes for new hardware are created.
The -v option will print the names of the new device nodes.
(Instead of using devfsadm, you can also perform a
"reconfiguration boot", i.e. boot with the flag "-r").
Next, you can run the "format" utility. Format should
offer a menu with all recognized disks, including the new
one. Select the new HDD from the menu. Inside "format"
you can create fdisk partitions (for solaris x86 you need a
"Solaris" fdisk partition). Once you have a solaris fdisk
partition, you can subdivide the solaris fdisk partition into multiple "slices" using format's partition menu.
When you're satisfied with the slice setup, "label" the disk.
The next step is to create filesystems on the slices using
the "newfs" command. The new slices with the fresh
    filesystem can now me mounted.
To automatically mount the new slices on a reboot, add
    appropriate lines to /etc/vfstab.

  • Can't access 2nd hard drive - " ..you do not have sufficient privileges"

I recently performed an Erase & Install on my PowerPC G5. Everything is fine with the main HD, but not with my 2nd hard drive; I can't access it (The folder "Hard Drive 2" could not be opened becuase you do not have the sufficient privileges).
The icon for it appears on my desktop with a lock on it, but when I hit Control-I to Get Info there is no option to Unlock the volume. Furthermore, under Sharing & Permissions all Privileges are listed as "Custom" and amongst the usual Names (system, admin, everyone" there are 2 additional headings, both (unknown). When I try to change any of the settings to Read & Write (or anything, for that matter), the change does not stick and it reverts back to Custom immediately.
Lastly, when I try to add myself to the Name list, it also does not stick and i remain un-added. I have checked the "Ignore ownership on this volume" box with no changed results.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

That a little Unix insight is useful from time to time with OS X is a bit of a blessing, considering the alternatives.

  • Size allowed for 2nd hard drive.

I have an old G5 2.0 ( A1117) and want to add a 2nd hard drive. Is there a limit to how big a hard drive I can install?
I ask because I also have a G4 and there is a limit on the size that it will accept.

    WARNING!!!
It might be, that the the person who told me this, meant this for 3TB external drives. Because here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=17109770#post17109770 you see, that it doesn't work internally in a G4.

  • Help. Can I go to a 1TB 2nd hard drive in my HP Pavilion dv8000 (also listed as a dv8333cl ?)

    hello-
I have an HP dv8000 notebook computer running windows xp-sp2.  I upgraded my 2nd hard drive (not the windows xp/boot drive - just document/family photo & video storage)  to a Hitachi 320 GB drive 4 years ago.  it works great but I"m almost out of space.
    item/specs -  320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145227
I would like to change it out for a newer Hitachi 1TB drive - as I am now approaching a full drive for photos, videos, docs.
    such as this one -  1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 6.0Gb/s
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145584
It is listed as having a speed of 6.0 gb/s instead of 3.0 gb/s and It says it's 'Advanced Format'.    Any reason my windows xp-sp2 laptop won't be able to use this drive?
In searching around the web it seems that my version of windows xp with sp2 as well as my bios may be the controlling factors.  In entering my product number on the HP Software and Drivers page it indicates my bios is up to date (only available update is for an AMD processor).  I may update to SP3 - though further research indicates XP with SP2 has no trouble 'seeing' a 1TB drive.
This compatibility doc from Hitachi that mentions these drives are compatible with some HP DV computers - but not mine specifically (dv8000 or dv8333cl) - and it also lists my motherboard/chipset as being compatible - Intel 945PM Express (I'm not sure about the express part but I'm pretty sure I have the Intel 945PM).
    http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/5E27D1BA34214ECB8825797B00282A2F/$file/TS5K1000_Compat...
If not the Hitachi - due to the Advanced Format issue - how about a seagate or western digital 1TB drive such as:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178006
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136927
I'm running windows xp with SP2 - it's very stable, my dv8000/8333cl is a centrino dual core intel 1.83ghz, i've upgraded to 2GB of Ram installed, Also I just recovered from a 'black screen' by 'reflowing' (tearing down computer and heating up the Invidia GPU to 350 degrees for a bit to 'reflow' the solder connections to my motherboard)  my nvidia Geforce GO 7600 GPU chip and cleaned/re-engineered the heat sink with custom copper heat shims  - so my HP laptop is running great and I want to keep it going for a long time.
What are the downsides to popping in a 1TB secondary drive to see if it will be 'seen' and if I can partition and format it for use as my storage drive?  Any thoughts?  Thanks much!

Seems like my 32 bit windows xp will recognize and use up to 3-3.5GB of the 4GB of RAM.  And since memory is pretty cheap now I'm going to try this also.
Anyone have any success going beyond the stated 2GB max for memory?
My Intel 945 PM motherboard/chipset lists max memory as 4GB - so it will only be limited by the 32 bit windows xp?
    Thanks for any thoughts.
