Gtkpacman & apps that require root privileges

Hello everyone.
I'm very new to Linux, having been a long time with windows adjusting is taking some time. I've been playing with Arch in a virtual machine for a while and must say I'm quite impressed, but one of the biggest differences from windows, and admittedly the thing that gives me problems most often, is permissions.
I've installed Gtkpacman, but I get an error every time I try to start it from the drop down menu in Gnome. I get something along the lines of "Cannot execute child process gksu." I assume this is because my user account needs root privileges, as I can run it with a command from the terminal, but it seems like it's missing the point if I have to be in the terminal to run the pacman graphical frontend, right?
So what I'm wondering is how do I change the settings so that when I click gtkpacman from the menu it prompts for the user password like Ubuntu does? (<--Arch is totally better than Ubuntu in every way tho)
Thanks.

I think you have to install sudo checkout sudo wiki page you got there all info about sudo that you need.

  • Tasks that require ROOT for RAC DBA

Our Networking Team and Applications Team are going through some growing pains. We are trying to resolve what permissions should be given to a RAC DBA. Our RAC DBA is responsible for Oracle Clusterware, Oracle Automatic Storage
Management and Oracle RDBMS software. The OS, Server and Storage Subsystem are the responsibility of the System Administrator. We have the following Environment:
    Production and Test (RAC)
Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 update 2
Oracle Clusterware 11.2.0.2 -- Grid Infrastructure
    Oracle ASM 11.2.0.2
    Oracle Database 11.2.0.2 EE
    Development (Single Instance)
Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 update 2
Oracle ASM 11.2.0.2 -- Grid Infrastructure
    Oracle Database 11.2.0.2 EE
As the RAC DBA, I have identified the following areas that require ROOT for RAC and Single Instance DB's; however, I understand there may be more:
    diagcollection.pl
    - diagnostic tool for Oracle Clusterware and may be requested by Oracle Support
    ocrconfig
    - to repair ocr configuration issue (add, replace and remove requires root)
    srvctl modify
    - required root to change ip address
    tar
    - TAR Grid Infrastructure Directory structure preserving files with ROOT ownership
    cluvfy
    - cluvfy fix it scripts need to run as ROOT
    - some cluvfy commands under 11gr1 would only run properly for -post cfs check as ROOT in our last installation
    ASM Libraries
    - ROOT required to install and configure ASM libraries
    fdisk - l
    - this is used to see disks attached which is relevant when ASM disks are not mounted
    /etc/sysconfig/oracleasm
    - oracleasm loading configuration file
    /usr/sbin/oracleasm
    - to make disks available to ASMLIB (scandisks etc.)
    /usr/sbin/asmtool
    - asm config tool due to bug
    asm cluster file system
    - some commands require ROOT (mounting etc.)
    - acfsutil
    /var/log/messages
    - loading errors ohas and oracleasm would be logged here
    cvuqdisk
    - needs to be loaded for new install
    root.sh
    - script needed to run at install, upgrades and patching
    oraInstRoot.sh
    - script needed to run at install
    rootupgrade.sh
    - upgrade script
    roothas.pl
    - upgrade script
    ocrcheck
    - check for ocr corruption
    - corrupt check portion requires ROOT
    - oracle local registry
    Grid Infrstructure
    - .runInstaller from Grid Infrastructure
    - includes upgrades
    asm configuration assistant (asmca)
    - configuration of asm diskgroups
    - vol mgr for asm disks
    ocrconfig
    - ocr configuration tool
    - ocr import
    - ocr export
    - oracle local registry
    ocrdump
    - used to check ocr backup file
    - oracle local registry
    opatch
    - patching grid control requires ROOT
    crsctl
    - Startup and Shutdown Oracle Clusterware, Oracle ASM and Database/Instance
    - restore voting disk
    - restore ocr
    - set log for dynamic debugging
    - check install periodically
    srvctl
    - modify nodeapps (ex. ip address change)
    - add filesystem (acfs)
What other items would a RAC DBA need to have ROOT access for?

I'd like to say at the outset that this is a scenario and I am NOT in anyway choosing who does what. A simple -- not so simple -- discussion of roles and responsibilities and associated privileges. If you say that the System Administrator is managing the Grid Infrastructure then this would include all Clusterware and Storage Management (ASM) activities. The System Administrator would manage the OCR and Voting Disks, backups, integrity checks etc. The DBA would then only be responsible for adding the storage within the database itself like assigning tablespaces that reference ASM Disk Groups. This doesn't mean that the DBA can't see the ASM information in the database. The major challenge seems to give your DBA access to the OS, networking and storage tools to preliminarily investigate what they believe to be a OS, networking or storage issue. Without this crossover, your System Administrator may be doing work that is unnecessary. A DBA should have clear understandings of what performance the storage system, cpu, memory and networking should be providing and access to the tools that allow them to understand what side of the fence an issue resides.
There seem to be choices for an organization.
    1) Is there a position called RAC DBA or is the RAC portion managed by the System Administrator.
    2) If a RAC DBA exists then what should the System Administrator be responsible for
    3) What access is need for an existing RAC DBA?
    4) How will access privileges be given to the RAC DBA?
    5) other considerations regarding security?
I agree that there needs to be crossover regarding handling workload and issues. The agreements on roles and responsibilities shouldn't stop the crossover but they should help in understanding who is ultimately responsible for certain areas of the system and application.
If this isn't happening at organizations then how is it handled? or not handled?

  • HT4623 I want to install an app that requires iOS5 and my iphone is 4.2.6 How do I Update my software for my iphone 4?

I want to install an app that requires iOS 5 update. How do I update the software on my phone when I do not have the icon in settings for update software? Please help!

Connect your iPhone to iTunes, and find Software Update in the main interface pane. It should prompt you to install iOS 5.1.1.

My ipod 5th gen says it is connected to the internet and i can go on apps that require an internet connection but whe i try to use the weather or another app that uses your current location it cant find me???

If you open the Maps app where does that say you are located?
For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

  • HT1414 How do I get apps that require iOS 5 on my Iphone 4S with the latest version of 6.0.1 currently installed on it?  I cannot install many of the apps I want to use and am not sure what to do.  Thank you.

I am not very good at navigating the Iphone so please be patient.  I have an Iphone 4S with the latest 6.0.1 and I would like to be able to download some of the apps that require iOS 5 on my iphone.  How do I do that.  When I look for the iOS 5 update it is no longer available.  I found that it is supposed to be available on Itunes.  I have not found it on Itunes.  All help is appreciated.  Thank you.

Well, no. It's because that the iPod 4th Gen has iOS 6 and the apps need iOS 7. I suggest that you get the new iPod 5 because it has iOS 7. Also the iPod 4 does not have enough CPU or RAM. The new iPod 5 has enough CPU and RAM to store iOS 7 apps.
    Thanks!

YOu can try resetting your network or a reboot.  To reboot hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release.  Wait for the phone to boot back up,  you won't lose any data.

  • Updating apps that require a newer version of IOS

I've decided to hold of on updating my iPad until the WiFi/4.2.1 issues are worked out. Since then I've ran into an issue with two apps that required 4.2 or higher. No big deal there. They download then don't install, and when I connect to iTunes, it says my IOS needs to be updated for the app.
My question is when you go into the update page of the App Store on the iPad, does it only show updates in which you are able to install the update on your running version of IOS? I was hoping it would allow me to "click" the app that it says there is an update for, but that doesn't work. So far I've searched for the app again to check it's requirements. Works but time-consuming.
Basically, I don't want to update something then it go "this version requires a newer IOS." and then it just leave me without my app. I'm not sure if that's how it would behave, but I don't want something to happen with one of the apps I use regularly.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the thing... I work in IT. There's a reason why a good admin doesn't turn on "Automatic Updates" because sometimes updates don't work. Perhaps the issues with WiFi are only a batch of iPads, perhaps it's only with certain routers, or perhaps it's trolls. I don't know... but until I'm satisfied with the results people are getting with the update OR I have no choice, I'm not updating. There's no dishonor in waiting for a patch if it is not critical and you can get by without it for the time being. Right now, there's too much uncertainty for me to make my iPad an expensive way to play Angry Birds. If I can't connect to the Internet with it, it's not very useful to me.
If and when an app needs an update that doesn't work with 3.2.2, it just won't get updated. If I get to that point where I have to update, I'll cross my fingers and go for it.
That said, if someone has an answer to my question about the apps and their behavior in the Update portion of the App Store, that would be great.

Since you have already isolated it down to your home network, if following Steve's instructions do not fix your issue, contact your Internet Service Provider or Router Manufacturer and make sure your network is set up according to this information: iOS and OS X: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

  • I need to buy an app that requires OS X version 10.10 and my computer doesn't have it. What should I do? I need "Numbers" app ASAP

Please, I need to update my computer in order to buy an app; what should I do? Thanks!

In the Mac App Store under Updates you should see a banner to update to OS X Yosemite, or you can search for Yosemite in the App Store and update in the event that you don't see it listed under the Updates page. Once your computer has updated, you will be able to install Numbers and other apps that require OS X 10.10.
    Have a great day.

  • Help ! I am connected to my WIFI and receiving email but I cannot use any apps that require  internet  including Safari, What do I need to do?

I am having a problem with  Internet  on my ipad, I am connected to my WIFI and am receiving emails but any App that requires internet connection will not work, this includes Safari. Everything worked fine until yesterday.

I too, am having this problem. I have the new iPad. I have a full strength wifi signal (currently at home and with my personal hotspot) but apps that need the internet including google chrome and safari do not search. Safari says "safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding." other apps just spin like it is searching for a signal or something. Frustrating, because it was working, it seems to have taken this route after uploading some new apps, but can't pinpoint. Help! Please!

  • HT4623 Twice I have connected my IPad to my computer and requested the upgrade to IOS 5.01 and twice I have not for some reason received the upgrade.   What is going on and what am I doing wrong? I can't get some Olympic apps that require it.

I do not seem to be upgrading to IOS 5.01 correctly - twice I have connected to my computer and received notification that all current upgrades are being added but when I try to download apps that require 5.01 I am told that I do not have a system that is upgraded for this.  What is the problem and how do I remedy it?

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. After you update to iOS 5.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • "Network service error" game apps that require internet connection working fine, internet signal strong. Safari working, but YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and App Store won't work?! Tried resetting network settings but problem persists?

Safari working fine, as are game apps that require internet connection.
I can not get AppStore, YouTube app, Facebook app or twitter app to load anything as 'network service error" comes up.
I have the latest update 7.2 and have tried resetting network settings, anyone else have this problem?! How do I fix it?

I did try that one. But for some reason it still does not help. The strange thing stays that I can acces Twitter and other Apps. But still nos Safari/App Store. Only when I am on Wi-Fi.

  • Is there a way to download apps that require ios 7 on my ios 6 iPod Touch?

So I came across this forum as many others, just trying to find some answers as to why I can't or how I could get ios 7 on my 4th gen ipod touch... So I guess the answer is no, not possible and I suppose I can understand the reason as someone stated in another thread that it is because Apple does not want their users to have a bad experience and the 4th gen does not have the CPU nor the Ram for it to provide a usable and good experience... which leads me to the root of the problem. Read on...
You see, I don't really care about ios 7 and any of its features, what I do care about is that I can no longer download some apps now because there is this popup that tells me that the app only supports ios 7 and I need to update my device to the latest software, ios 7. So how then is my Apple experience,  a positive experience if I am no longer allowed to download apps that I could before the ios 7 update even existed? a
Perhaps I'm wrong? Maybe there is a way for me to download and still use these apps. If that is the case, I would love to learn how.
Honestly, this is something that really makes me nervous as I am strongly considering switching from Android (After years of Apple hating) to my first Apple iPhone. But I would really hate to get me an iPhone 5s, only to find out that in a year I could no longer download apps because a new update will not work on my phone? Is that a possibility?

    Try This...
Close All Open Apps...  Perform a Reset... Try again...
