GTX 570: Use EVGA or nVidia driver?

I'm building up my new video editing system and seem to remember reading some forum posts at one point where there was some discussion (or what it a strong recommendation?) to use one of these video drivers over the other.  What's the general consensus on this issue?
A couple of other minor questions (that are admittedly quite newbie)
1) I've got an ASUS P6X58D-E board and was planning to run 2 hard drives (Hitachi Deskstar / 2 TB 7200RPM SATA III 6 Gbps 64 MB Cache) as RAID 0 off the Marvel controller.  Will Windows 7 recognize the 3.8 GB okay, and what is the issue with the Marvel controller? I'm planning to use this drive to store all of my media (backing it up to my NAS) and wondering if there's a reliability issue that I should be concerned with.
2) Planning to use two 1TB Caviar Black drives in RAID 0 using the Intel ICH10R controller.  For this setup, I'm assuming that I should be setting the drive configuration in my ASUS BIOS to "RAID" (vs. AHCI), right?  And IIRC, whatever I choose I can't change it once I've installed the OS.
3) Do most of you let Win 7 install the 200MB mini-partition or do you prefer to do the trick where you hit "Cancel" when the installation process asks you if it's okay to create separate partitions?  I forgot about that and now have the annoying partition on one of my RAID disks (I was sure that the 640GB OS disk was plugged into the lowest numbered SATA port, sigh...).  Not a big deal to reinstall it at this point though . .
Thanks for any and all assistance !!
-Mike

Mike,
eVGA actually uses an Nvidia reference driver for its graphics cards. The link to the driver download actually redirects from the eVGA site to the Nvidia site. Do not use the driver that came with your eVGA card since it's seriously outdated and bug-ridden by the time you receive the card.
So in other words, get the latest WHQL driver from the Nvidia site.

    Hello Svet,
I need help with this please, if it is indeed a BIOS problem:

I found a new BIOS for it following the link from the Power Pro official site, but I have no idea if it would do the job.

Ok, from you're answer I understand that  flashing the GPU with a compatible vBIOS is either not a solution for the problem,
yes don't think that can help for this case
and also will be high risky to brick your card
and even if its not bricked[survive flashing] don't think that can change anything
eventually you can try flashing your system notebook BIOS to the latest version for your notebook,
to check if that can helps by chance.
For it you have to ask your notebook vendor [power notebooks]
to provide you with the latest BIOS for your NB
rather than this don't think any modded stuffs can help with this.

  • Hires monitor with nvidia driver busted? [nevermind. used wrong cable]

UPDATE: I'm an idiot. I screwed up connecting the cable and used a single channel DVI cable, despite being perfectly aware of the need to use dual. Swapped in the right cable and all's well.
I got a Dell u2711 monitor and expected it to just work. When I try to run it at 2560x1440 everything looks wrong; it's not just fonts, even the mouse cursor is somehow screwed up. Text is unreadable. Yes, I'm using the dual channel DVI cable.
The information xrandr reports appears correct:
        $ xrandr
        DVI-I-2 connected 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm
           2560x1440      60.0*+
    xdpyinfo says something else, though.
        $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
        screen #0:
          dimensions:    4240x1440 pixels (997x342 millimeters)
          resolution:    108x107 dots per inch
I thought maybe the disagremement on dimensions was the problem so I plopped
    this into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf
        Section "Monitor"
            Option    "UseEdidDpi"    "false"
            Identifier "Monitor0"
            DisplaySize 597 336
        EndSection
        Section "Screen"
            Identifier    "Screen0"
            Monitor       "Monitor0"
        EndSection
It did indeed change what xdpyinfo reports, but everything looks the same (squished and pixely). So it didn't work.
        $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
        screen #0:
          dimensions:    4240x1440 pixels (598x339 millimeters)
          resolution:    180x108 dots per inch
I'm using the binary nvidia driver. I tried starting up with the Nouveau driver but that didn't improve things.
    I'm using a GeForce GTX 460 graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814127510
I do not know what's going on here or how to fix it. Is there a known issue using the Dell U2711 monitor with xorg and nvidia? Google doesn't seem to know about it.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit recognizes 8 cores. 32-bit recognizes one physical cpu.
I've had very little trouble in two years. And now I do like Windows 7 but also eager for the RC.
I've been using the latest Nvidia. There is a method to the madness of how to uninstall/delete and install graphics drivers, or madness in the method. The W7 drivers are easier.
Nope. Something else. More sensitive to disk errors. You aren't running a program to boost fans. Something.
And some AV software is more prone to causing trouble. But all you need is a good AV/malware program, and even Norton AV 2009 is acceptable, or Avast or one of the others.

  • [Solved] Switch from nvidia driver to nouveau - libgl is seg faulting

    Hello,
I recently tried to switch my desktop from using the proprietary nvidia driver to nouveua after having the proprietary driver crash randomly.
I followed the wiki page for this (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/nouveau) where I removed the nvidia driver packages and installed xf86-video-nouveau. I also regenerated the ramdisk image. After all of this I was unable to get xfce to load, although I can get X to successfully start running twm.
The problem seems to be because libGL.so.1 is causing many things segfault. (emacs, xfce4-session). For example, if I run emacs through gdb from the console, the backtrace is from /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.
Any suggestions on things I can try to stop the seg faulting and get a usable system again?
    Thanks

  • Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

After today's update of the Linux kernel to 3.10, I can not start X using the proprietary nvidia driver on my IdeaPad Y500 laptop (MBG2BMH with GeForce GT650M GPU).
When I try to do this, it takes a second or two in the "loading GLX" state, after which the screen goes black. My fan goes to max and after a few seconds, the system dies.
    X logs don't show much:
    [ 49.888] (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling 2D acceleration
[ 56.164] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:1:0:0. Please

[ 56.164] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
I will add a kernel log after rebooting, because I seem to have lost it.
I think the relevant message read "GPU fell off the bus", which I think indicates a crash of the GPU driver.
After rolling back to 3.9.9, the issue is gone.
My xorg.conf (and xorg.conf.d) does not contain anything special (only a DPI fix). I tried removing it, but the issue is still there.
EDIT: I seem to be unable to get a kernel log for these sessions.
Journalctl simply does not show the failing session.
I don't know why I did get a log before. It happened on a linux-ck build with a couple of modifications, a while back (and the logs seem to be gone).
I'll try again later, making sure I sync.

  • Has anyone got the B500 to work with Ubuntu? (nvidia driver problems)

In two weeks, I have been completely unable to get the nvidia driver working with the B500 on Linux. No matter what I try to do, the X server doesn't start, and my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file ends with "fatal server error: no screens found." I have tried feeding a custom modeline to xorg.conf, explicitly calling an EDID file which I extracted from the Windows installation, using the upstream nvidia driver installer, using the official repository driver, and probably a bunch of other stuff that I'm not recalling right now.
    Versions I've tried this on:
    Kubuntu 10.04, 32- and 64-bit
    Ubuntu 10.04, 32-bit
    Kubuntu 9.10, 32-and 64-bit
I am stumped. Has anyone successfully gotten this to work?
    best,
    -p.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Solved with the kind assistance of paulricardomc on the Ubuntu Forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1477507
    Short version of the fix:
    1. Extract the edid from the Windows partition using softMCCS, saving as edid.bin
    2. Save the edid.bin file in /etc/X11 (or wherever you like)
    3. Include the following in the device section of your xorg.conf:
    "Option"  "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0"
    "Option" "CustomEDID" "DFP-0:/etc/X11/edid.bin"
Fire up X and you're good to go.

  • Nvidia driver crashes X and freezes system

I've installed Arch Linux last night and the nvidia driver I installed crashes X a few seconds after I start it.
At the moment I'm using Nouveau without a problem but I'm not satisfied with the performance so I'd like to use the official nvidia driver. So far I tried the one in the package database (270), the beta one from the AUR (280) and two older ones, (250 & 260). Neither of the latter would install, I'm guessing because of old kernel version?
So basically the problem is that whenever I start X it works for a couple of seconds (less than 10) and then my system freezes to a black screen. When I boot gdm the same thing happens, everything works including input and sound but shortly after seeing the login screen the black screen appears again.
    Here's an X error log: http://pastie.org/2248178
    So any ideas?

Well the new driver changes the way the GPU throttles. Accoding to Nvidia's update notes, it will throttle up or down allot faster based on load. I have also noticed the DPC latency has significantly dropped on those hardware changes as well and along with the repeated interrupts for state change requests. Did you uninstall the previous drivers first?

  • Linux 3.2.8 - older nvidia driver needs a rebuild

For those still using an older nvidia driver - this version needs a rebuild, eg.  NVIDIA-Linux-x86-285.05.09

In the search link I gave above: b43-firmware-latest is for kernel 3.2+ and b43-firmware is for <3.2.  That is the, ahem, AUR search link good sir.   If someone is using b43-firmware however, they may not catch that they need to remove that and migrate to b43-firmware-latest when kernel 3.2 hits.
I actually have a Broadcom 4311 in my laptop.  I never use it and use a wired connection instead simply because no driver I've tried has been stable enough - mostly frequent disconnects/non-responsive - so when 3.2 hits I may just try it again with b43-firmware-latest and see if it's better!

  • GT70 20D BSoD on win 8.1 - Nvidia driver

    Hello,
I have several BSod (blue screen of death) under windows 8.1. (around one every days) i try to run driver verifier on ALL the drivers, one by one (it's take me few hours) and finally discover
that it's the driver for nvidia (nvlddmkm.sys exactly) that do all the time the BSoD ! (in driver verifier it's do BSoD few seconds after windows start)
I try everything possible, uninstalling nvidia driver (no more bsod but not perfect solution because compatible vga driver is used in place), using the last nvidia
driver (9.18.13.3182 but it's not work) and even the beta driver (not work either)
What the solution i have now ? is someone really have one GT70 20D and win8.1 with the laster nvidia driver without any BSoD ??
Also my win8.1 is a clean install from iso DVD
    thanks by advance

    Quote from: loki5100 on 03-January-14, 21:53:52
but i can't go to windows 8 ! the only previous version i can go (supported by our company) it's windows 7 ! but on the website on msi they said we can not update the bios with a windows 7 version when the bios was originally with a windows 8 version :( this can brick the laptop they say ... so what i can do ???
and sorry but when i read here :
    http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT70-2OD.html
    it's clearly say it's work with Windows 8.1 !
So i buy it regarding this ! but it's false advertising because it's never work on windows 8.1 !
it's msi that choose to work with nvidia, so it's their responsibility to say that it's not compatible with windows 8.1 !
anyone with the windows 8.1 can try driver verifer on the nvidia driver to see that it's immediately crash after few minutes
First off, calm down. You're being rather irrational.
The BIOS doesn't matter if it's a Windows 7 or a Windows 8 BIOS. It will work with the OS. You can install Windows 7 perfectly fine on a GT70 20D with it having a Windows 8 or 8.1 BIOS. The bios doesn't effect the OS. The reason they state information regarding the OS is that GT70 0NX's can come with both Windows 7 or Windows 8 pre-installed. Those notebooks can only upgrade to the same BIOS that corresponds to the OS originally installed.
That being said, you don't seem to understand what I said. MSI cannot control NVidia's drivers. If the NVidia drivers don't work well with Windows 8.1, that doesn't mean the notebook is incompatible. The notebook runs Windows 8.1 just fine. The problem lies more with NVidia and the drivers provided for Windows 8.1. I've been over this a million times on many different websites, getting mad at MSI over NVidia's drivers is the same as getting mad at Microsoft for printer manufacturer's not putting out updated printer drivers for Windows 8.1. Microsoft can't control what those manufacturer's do. Get mad at them.
As zipper has said, it does work, but look at what he did...he went through many different versions of both the Intel and NVidia drivers. Most likely you will have to do the same. This is not something we can do for you, you're going to have to do it on your own.

  • Nvidia driver problems

I am a newbie to Arch Linux migrating from Ubuntu. Arch Linux seemed like the perfect operating system and sounded like it would be 'fun' to try and get it working. Unfortunetly I'm used to things working mostly out of the box (ie Ubuntu). I have gotten most things to work fairly well, except for two things: fonts and nvidia drivers. When I finally got xorg/enlightenment to just work, I remembered I would have to get nvidia drivers to get my full resolution (1680x1050) and to play some games. I went to the wiki, and followed the instructions exactly. No luck. I then tried just using 'nvidia-xconfig' to make my xorg configuration. No dice. I also have no idea how to get fonts to work, xorg reports lots of missing files and I have no clue what to do. I would like the default ubuntu fonts to work in firefox . My video card is a GeForce 7950GT. Here is my Xorg.0.log: http://pastebin.ca/raw/635972 (this is the one that is produced when I use the 'nvidia-xconfig' configuration) and here is my lspci: http://pastebin.ca/raw/635979 here is the xorg.conf made with 'hwd -xa': http://pastebin.ca/raw/635981 (which works) and heres the xorg.conf make with 'nvidia-xconfig': http://pastebin.ca/raw/635982 (which produces the errors in the log I listed)
    Thanks,
    DJ

Hm, according to your xorg log, your nvidia kernel module isn't being loaded.  What happens when you try to issue
    sudo modprobe nvidia
?  What's the error message?  More detail can be garnered by running
    dmesg | tail
    immediately after the modprobe.
Also, since I'm not too hip on nvidia lore, and I'm not too sure how new or old a 7950GT is, it's worth mentioning: we have three nvidia packages in our repos:  nvidia (newer cards), nvidia-96xx (not-too-new cards), nvidia-71xx (older cards) - you might want to make sure you've installed the correct one.
-edit- Ack, you edited your post on me.  Your hwd -xa config file works because it's using the 'vesa' driver, which is basically the one-size-fits-all driver that works for everything.  The other one isn't working because it's trying to use the proprietary nvidia driver, but as I mentioned above, the kernel module isn't loading properly. -/edit-

  • Problem with Matrox Mini, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570, Premiere 5.5.2 and After Effects CS5.5

    Hello,
We have a couple video workstation PC's in our office.
Premiere and After Effects have been crashing lately with increasing frequency - about every two minutes now.
    Here is the setup:
    Hardware
Matrox Mini - Matrox Utility release 5.5.1
Nvidia GeForce GTX 570 - Driver release 275.33
Intel Xeon X5660 2.8 GHz processors
    24 GB Ram
    Software
    Adobe CS5.5, specifically...
    After Effects 10.5.0.253
    Premiere 5.5.2
    Windows 7 64-bit
We have two 21" LCD monitors in dual display running from the computer, and the Matrox Mini outputs a preview signal to a 15" CRT.
The crashes occur when I have After Effects and Premiere open at the same time. I am editing in a Matrox 720p29.97 timeline in Premiere. I imported several compositions from AE into Premiere through Dynamic Link and am matching audio with the animations in comps. When I switch back to AE to make an edit in the comp, After Effects generates a crash warning and then gives me the opportunity to save the project under a new name. After saving, it closes down completely. The Matrox WYSIWYG Control Panel in the system tray crashes during AE's crash, disabling the preview to the CRT from Premiere and AE. Since the Premiere sequence is a Matrox preset - in order to have output to the CRT - this freezes the timeline; the video and audio no longer play. When I save and then try to close Premiere, Premiere freezes and will not close without a force quit via the Task Manager.
In order to deal with this temporarily, I am editing in an AVCHD 720p30 sequence preset in Premiere, which doesn't send a preview feed to the CRT, obviously, since it's not a Matrox preset and the CRT is connected via the Matrox Mini. It's more than a minor inconvenience, since I use the CRT for color accuracy.
It is frustrating, since we did not have this problem until the recent CS5.5.2 update. We have tried changing drivers for the GTX 570 and changing the Matrox utility software to other versions, but no luck.
Is there a combination of GTX 570 drivers, Matrox software releases, and AE/Premiere settings that will make this work? I know there are "Known Issue" posts with Nvidia cards on Matrox's website, which include the GTX 570, but, again, this problem started with the Adobe CS5.5.2 update.
Any help here would be great, and I am willing to provide more information about the system and our crashes if it helps find a solution for the community, as I know this is not an isolated problem after reading Nvidia's, Matrox's, and Adobe's forums. I just can't find a hollistic solution on any of the individual manufacturer's forums.
    Thank You.
    Jordan

I've been running with Matrox for years, starting with the Axio LE. I do 75% broadcast work and find that the Matrox works very well with my kind of workflow. Monitoring is critical and since we have to deal with 3rd. party solutions, Matrox was my pick dating way back to 2006. Sure I've had frustrations with it, but I've made far more money off Matrox than frustration.
       Here's my nearly crash-free setup:
    Gigabyte GZ-X58A-OC moboard
Intel 990X (only overclocking to 4.0)
    24Gb of Kingston HyperX Ram
    GTX580 Graphics Card
    Matrox MXO2-LE w/Max
Crucial 240Gb Sata III drive (the one that has a nearly perfect score on Newegg's site)
    2 x 2Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
    2 x 1Tb WD Blacks Raid 0
Win 7 Ultimatte (it's a high-end version of Windows that's great for keying!)
    CS5.5 Suite
    Boris Red 5
    Boris Continuum Complete 8
Trapcode Shine, Form, 3d Stroke, Starglow, and Particular
    Optical Flares by Video CoPilot
The reason I list all of that software, is that it all seems to get along together, including with Matrox! So, I can't say I highly endorse Matrox because I've never tried Black Magic or running an external monitor off of my video card.
I use After Effects with all sorts of plug ins and rarely have crashes. If I put in a long day I'll have the usual crashes here and there (mainly with PremierePro), but nothing that has required evan a soft reboot of the computer.
My frustration with Matrox is mainly the delay that often comes with Adobe coming out with a new release and Matrox taking 2 or 3 months to catch up, though when Adobe went from 5 to 5.5, there was no delay at all.
I think that a lot of the people who trash Matrox probably haven't used a Matrox product in years. But before you listen to me, I must confess that I was an early adopter (and advocate) of SSDs and even today, many people on this forum think they're still a waste of money!
I'll close by simply saying that I've not left Matrox after 5+ years, but keep in mind I haven't had the bad experiences that so many others seem to have had, but again, perhaps they had those bad experiences long ago.

  • This is my experience with MSI, and their NVIDIA GTX 570 reference card.

Hello my name is James king.
and This is my experience with MSI, and their NVIDIA GTX 570  reference card.
(5/27/12) Day one. I update my driver from Beta 301.24 To WHQL 301.42. and as you would expect, it worked. so i restart and go play kerbal space program (if you haven't played this go, play it now i love it) 5 minutes later it starts artifacting, eg. textures stretching, random green spots. "ugh" so i start troubleshooting, reinstall revert and so on. later i give up and go play  Portal 2, i load the game opening screen i see lots (100-250) of little flickering green dots. first instincts says its the cable, test nope. then maybe the screen, test nope. i keep testing  throughout the night, to no avail.
(5/28/12) so to the internet, for help. 3 hours later nothing, but people with bad cards.                 at opening i call NVIDIA Tech Support, they say to call MSI so i do. 3 calls no pick up, 4th call      and i get a "Support technician" who is no help, says to fill out a RMA form online.                    and so i do more troubleshooting for the rest of the day. and i give up, and go to bed.
(5/29/12)  i fill out a RMA form, end of day i get an email from MSI that says; "Dear Valued Customer [email] your RMA is pending approval, and you will get an email within 1 weak with shipping information.
(6/1/12) shipping information, instructions, but no shipping label.
(6/4/12) i ship the card, via UPS
(6/12/12) after using the most round about route eg. it got to MSI.

(6/13/12) email from MSI, says they got it.
(6/14/12) email from MSI, says it is in procesing.
(6/20/12) email from MSI, saying they shipped it and that [this] is the tracking number.
(6/26/12) end of day. i receive the card, and see the case is badly scratched. i install it in my pc and hey it worked (for now). watch some YouTube, and go to play skyrim. start up load my save and i make one step, and my pc hard freezes. "sigh" half an hour later, i give up and go play minecraft 10 minutes in, and it hard freezes. so now more troubleshooting,5 hours later no luck.
(6/27/12) i have called MSI Tech Support 2 times, when they picked up the phone they say to call customer service. 7 calls later no pickup.
and that is it MSI have sent my on the run around too long.

So are you asking us for help with your PC issues or simply complaining to us about your RMA which we on this forum have nothing to do with. We are MSI product users here the same as you and we are helping each other out with problems on their PCs with their MSI parts. If you need what help we can offer assisting you with a problem then start a new topic and we'll do the best we can to help you.

  • MSI GTX 570 (N570GTX-M2D12D5) - Display driver stopped responding

    Problem:
Upon watching videos and playing games, artifacts begin to show and green blotches sometimes appear.  After a couple seconds the video slows down and crawls to a stop.  After another couple seconds the screen goes blank, then after 2-3 seconds the video comes back and I get a balloon notification, "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"
    Attempted Fixes:
-Updated Gigabyte Motherboard BIOS to the latest revision (F7, need to try F8a beta)
-Updated Video Card BIOS to latest revision (KJ1)
-Installed MSI's latest video card driver (285.62)
-Installed NVIDIA's latest video card driver (285.62 WHQL)
-Installed NVIDIA's latest beta video card driver (295.51 beta)
-Removed all but essential hardware (booted using only CPU/Memory/Mainboard/SSD+HDD/Video Card)
-Tested other graphics cards (9800GX2 worked fine, very similar power requirements as GTX 570)
    -Verified PSU's requirements Seasonic X650 650-Watt PSU (High-efficiency, 54A on +12V)
--Minimum 550W or greater system power supply (with a minimum 12V current rating of 38A)
    -No overclocking
    -Increased northbridge voltage
    -Increased GPU voltage
-RMA'd my first GPU, got my 2nd GPU and it too has the same problem.
-Increased timeout per Microsoft's KB article:
    -Clean install of Windows 7 64-bit SP1
I think it's incompatible with Gigabyte motherboards... I cannot find any other logical connection, even after updating both BIOS (Video & Mainboard)
Should I RMA?  Can MSI refund me?  I'm sick of this problem and I'm not convinced an RMA will fix it.
    My specs:

is the card OC edition, if yes have you tried to remove the factory OC?

do you use BIOS defaults settings? [no any OC]
test the card into another computer
