GTX 670 PE OC - Game Crashing

I have had this card for close to 6 months, and have just started experiencing issues with crashing. I constantly get the TDR error and sometimes have to actually force the computer to reboot otherwise the screen will just stay black. I can move the mouse and see the secondary display but nothing shows on the primary display but the taskbar and black screen.
My current setup is as follows
i5 3570K
16Gb Corsair 1600
MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming
670 PE OC
Corsair HX750
CM Hyper 212 Evo
Rosewill Blackhawk Case
I did run Memtest and found that I had some bad RAM, so I replaced it ran Memtest again and everything checked out fine. I also ran the Intel stress test for an hour and found no issues.
I had this card in an Asus P8P67-Pro before and had no issues whatsoever.
Also I just bought an Asus VG23PQE for my primary monitor, could the 120 - 144Hz display rates be causing the issue?
For example, last night I played Metro Last Light for over an hour with no issues, then suddenly the game crashes to a black screen. Cannot open task manager or anything, the black screen covers all applications. I have to either sign out and then sign back in using CTRL+ALT+DEL or manually reset the computer. Also if I sign out and then sign back in, if I try to relaunch the game it immediately crashes. I have to reboot the computer in order to play any games.
I was using driver 320.18 then I tried the latest Beta 320.49, then back to 306.xx and always have the same issues of crashing. Could it be the motherboard causing all the issues? Just getting really frustrated as this seems to keep happening regardless of what I try to do to fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I checked the pins extremely closely and they are spot on, I re seated the CPU and cooler and used Prolimatech PK-3 this time instead of Arctic Silver 5. As a side note I have to say that this thermal paste is quite a bit better than AC5. I am old school so I have been using Arctic Silver since the Williamette days with RDRAM when I would spread the stuff on the CPU heatsink. I tried this time just using the vertical line method.
Anyways, I think it is all down to the Nvidia driver causing the crashes, I actually have installed a MSI GTX770 Gaming and am no longer, thumbs crossed, having the issues. It seems that the 770 runs cooler at idle, and if I ramp up the fan speed it is much quieter than the 670. I think that the mobo is fine, again possibly the Nvidia drivers?
As a side note, flobelix I also have the 830 256Gb drive as my primary.

  • GTX 670 PE closing the games

I have a GTX 670 PE, which seems to not hold over that she already came from the factory, when I play the games after a while close with an error, I have another 670 of the same model and it works perfectly, the problem only occurs with her equally if I increase too much the clock.
I realized that the version of the bios is different.
    1° MSINV284MS.1A0 - 80.04.5 c. 00.29
    2° MSINV284MS.122 - 80.04.31.00.46
The 1° is the Board that is presenting problems. Which one is the latest bios? I wonder if you could be this the problem?

  • GTX 670 stopped working, successfully recovered issue

Not sure if anyone experienced the following and have solution but any advice would be great.
I recently purchased a GTX 670, did a format and everything was working fine but as of yesterday I keep getting 'Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver Version 314.22 has stopped working and recovered'. I get the error message as soon as I boot up, no applications or games loaded, it just crashes on desktop.
I download MSI Afterburner to check the temps and noticed that if I leave the PC idle the GPU will hit 99% and as soon as I click on the mouse, it will drop back down to idle and I will get the 'Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver Version 314.22 has stopped working and recovered'.
I tried the most recent drivers and the last 5 versions of Nvidia drivers but that made no different.
Nothing has been installed or uninstalled for the past week.
    Thanks

Have the same issue, but the steps taken to reproduce this error is slightly different, computer was working fine the day before and this issue only arised yesterday without me installing or doing anything to the computer in the time inbetween.
    PC specs
    Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H
Gskill 8GB ram (can't remember the model, at work now)
    MSI GTX 670 OC edition
    Intel I5 3570K i think
    Windows 8
    OS HDD - Crucial M4 128gb
    Steps :
1.)Was watch youtube on 1080p yesterday and after ~40 minutes; nearing the end of 40 mins, the video and sound slows to a crawl where each spoken word was produced one at a time
2.)Closed the browser (firefox)and the PC had stuttering issues - Cursor freezed for a good 20 seconds and then became normal again whereupon after 2-3 minutes of normal usage it freezes up again (Noticed that the CPU was running a full load after each freeze for a good 1-2 seconds)
3.)After 5-6 minutes of stuttering a windows notification comes up and says that Nvidia 314.22 kernel mode has crashed and has been recovered (Only able to reproduce this twice, it never appears again)
4.)Thereafter I launched a game to try to see if it was an isolated issue with the browser/plugin - less than 10 minutes of playthrough, the game hanged with looped sound and freezed screen, bringing up the Ctrl - Alt - Del menu and selecting task manager brings a black screen and the PC restarts on its own
5.)Proceeded to do a clean uninstall of the 314.22 drivers and installed the 306.97 driver provided by MSI
    6.)Updated the SSD firmware
7.)Same issue ingame after that, intermittent screen freezes where after close to 8 minutes of play, screen froze and sound looped
    Solutions tried but failed -
    1.)Updating SSD firmware
2.)Rolling back of drivers - the kernel mode recovery notification no longer appears but the pc just freezes and sound loop outright ingame
3.)Trying to locate the malware(Manual search for the file and using Malwarebytes)  - Iehighutil.exe but none found, gpu load and temp looks normal in gpu-z when the freezes occur
Have no idea why this error arised, nothing was installed/changed between the time it was fine and the error arose. Have read that it could be the windows update KB2807986 but i doubt so as that's for windows 7?
Power supply seems to be fine as well, have not run memtest on ram but i doubt its the ram - seeing as how the notification mentioned nvidia driver kernel mode.
Please help or try to provide solutions that are feasible if possible.
Thank you and sorry for the lengthy post.

  • MSI GTX 670 Power Edition/OC max temperature?

I've had a MSI GTX 670 Power Edition/OC working great since October 2012, no problems even with the most demanding games.
But now the summer heat has come (it's 40°C in the shade) and I've been getting crashes (classic TDR, no video signal, windows reboots) when the temperature of the GPU gets to about 80°C. If I leave the case open, it never reaches that temperature and works great.
I can't find the temperature specs for this card, but the reference GTX 670 should run up to 97°C.
Is this normal? What is your maximum stable temperature?
    P.S. I don't overclock, anything.
    Thank you

    Hi there,
the only think I could suggest is that ...
1st. do you have adequate cooling in your system..i.e. case fans etc, etc, and to ensure theres no obstruction to cooling fan on  vga card, always an alternative is to install what they call an exhaust blower fan place that directly underneath your card  and that will extract heat away, I had the same issue with my MSI 6570 card and as soon as I added an exhaust blower mine runs at 33oC and i'm pushing my card to the extreme and temp still stays the same... if that fail then your gpu cooling issnt running fast enough to supply adequate cool air...
I hope that will help you

  • MSI GTX 670 completely freezes please help

Hi. I posted my problem on the nvidia forums and they suggested I RMA my graphics card and get it replaced... I thought I would post it here to see if anyone could help me...
This issue has started about a few days ago and it has been bugging me because I can't play any pc games for longer than about a minute. Anyway, so the problem is, after about 10 seconds of playing any pc game(I'm using the game minecraft as an example) my computer COMPLETELY freezes and blue squares appear. There is nothing I can do other than switch off the power. Even my mouse pointer freezes. I don't think it's an 'overheating' problem because I let it cool down for 24 hours and the problem persists.
I took a picture with my iphone to show
As you can see, the blue squares appear and EVERYTHING is frozen... Even if i'm not playing a game, sometimes on occasions my screen goes black and comes back and says "display driver has stopped responding and has successfully recovered". But the main issue is that I can't play games or even watch youtube videos for longer than 10 seconds...
    I have a MSI GTX 670 and I have the 306.97 driver.
I have tried countless 'fixes' (for example, setting power management to prefer maximum performance in nvidia control panel) and others too..
Any replies will be GREATLY appreciated, thankyou

    brand, model PSU?
    Quote
I don't have another computer to test it in..
then you can RMA it and if the problem is not in the card the problem will persist.

  • Trouble with GPU Acceleration in Premiere Pro CS6 (GTX 670)

I recently bought a new GTX 670 with the hopes that it would accelerate my video editing in Premiere. After using the "nVidia hack" to add it to the list of CUDA supported cards, I started up Premiere, enabled GPU acceleration in the general project preferences window, and was disappointed to find that my performance appeared to be identical to what I had experienced with my non compatible HD 6870s.
When I checked with MSI Afterburner, my GPU usage remained around 0%, even when playing through videos. I'm quite certain that my card was successfully added to the list, so I have no idea what's going on.
Is there any chance that I am misunderstanding what GPU acceleration is supposed to do? I'm very new to Premiere, so I don't know too much about it yet. The reason I bought my new card, aside from improved performance in 3D games, was to allow me to scrub through my project (comprised of 1080p AVI videos captured with FRAPS) without hiccups and poor FPS. Was this not a reasonable expectation for GPU rendering?
Here's a short list of my PC's specs if it's any help:
-Intel i5 2500k (currently not overclocked)
    -8GB DDR3 Dual Channel RAM (at 1600MHz)
    -1TB 7200RPM HDD
-nVidia GTX 670 OC 2GB VRAM
    -Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 Motherboard
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Did you go to project>project settings>general and verify that GPU (cuda) accleration is enabled? If it's set to software only then change it and see if that helps. If it's enabled my next question is what is the bitrate of your FRAPS videos? Because I have seen some fraps video's with bit-rates that are really high which would require a RAID array that is only holding video clips to playback smoothly. In your case it appears you have your OS and your apps and your footage all playing from the same 7200rpm drive. Which isn't really sufficent for 1080p editing. However it might be as simple as enabling it from within premiere pro like I mention earlier. If it's enabled though please check the bit-rate of your video you're attempting to edit with because I'm assuming that might be the issue.

  • Sound Card Problem, or Driver Problem? Games crash, when they didn't befo

Not sure what the problem is, but seems to be a sound problem of some sort. I have just re-installed Vista 64. And now when I try to play BF242, the game crashes before I even see any kind of gameplay. It also instantly crashes when I click on the audio options tab. I have installed the latest drivers from the site. I have even uninstalled them, and launched the game without any drivers, and the game runs perfectly fine, but only without sound.
But I've been able to play BF242 before, but it would evenutally crash after a while, but at least I was able to get into the game. So knowing that Ive been able to play before, and it played without any drivers, I dug up some drivers that I know I had working at one point when the game was playing. And it still crashes before it gets into the game.
So this makes me wonder, is this really a driver problem or a soundcard problem?
All sounds are perfectly fine elsware, music, movies, OS tones, web, etc. Crysis runs perfectly fine. Company of Heros Crashes, Quake Wars crashed about 0 mins into a game. Team Fortress 2 runs perfectly fine. Battlefield 2 instantly crashes.
    Here's my specs:
    Vista 64 Ultimate
    Asus P5W DH Deluxe
    Asus nVidia 8800 GTX
    4gig Corsair XMS2 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
Powersupply Antec True Power Trio TP3-550 550W ATX2V Power Supply with Three 2V Rails
Sound Blaster x-fi fatality (whatever the one that comes with the front computer interface)
Any help would be great. I'd hate to go buy a new sound card just to try it, unless I had a pretty good idea that it was the issue.

I think I found the problem. It was the physical card itself. I pulled my old Audialogy card out of my old machine, and swapped it. Now BF242 runs.
And mine never went to a black screen, and had to hard reset. It just dumped right to the desktop with a message "bf242.exe has stopped working."

  • Incredibly terrible overclocks with MSI GTX 670 PE/OC

Been using my GTX 670 PE/OC for about a month now. Since the card was supposedly made with overclocking in mind, I decided to give overclocking a try. To my astonishment, the card is perhaps the worst card I've ever had for overclocking. Using MSI afterburner with voltage turned all the way up and power limit at 114%, I could barely overclock to +20 on the core and +600 on the memory. Even at that overclock, BF3 is crashing all the time, especially when I'm doing well. Its incredibly frustrating. The only reason on got the Power Edition from MSI was because it was supposedly designed with overclocking in mind. Had I known it would be so terrible at overclocking, I wouldn't have gotten it. Am I overclocking this card wrong or is this card a dud?

Overclocking is a matter of the individual sample. One might clock great while another of the same model won't. A great board design is useless if the gpu is just a bad draw. The memory doing + 600 Mhz is an absoluely astonishing clockrate only very few GTX670 or 680s would make.
Note that overvolting the GPU is locked due to Nvidia forcing MSI to and any set voltage will result in no more than 1.175v unless you have an unlocked vbios and the right Afterburner version (2.2.3 or 2.2.5 beta 1). Please read >>How to use MSI Afterburner<<

  • MSI Afterburner 2.2.4 - Voltage oc nerf for GTX 670 PE / GTX 680 Lightning

Looks like Nvidia has given MSI a bashing for allowing voltage adjustments with these cards.
Disappointing as the actual box states:
    Quote from: mikeo, OcUK Forums
Yet another new version just released:
    http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm#
    MSI Afterburner Version 2.2.4 (2012/9/18)
    -    Added new graphics cards support
    -    Change the NVIDIA Kepler series voltage control mode
And it's the 2nd item that is maybe of interest to those of us with Kepler based GPU's! Basically the GPU core voltage has been now locked for all cards (including the 680 Lightening and the 670 PE) to 1.175v. This by all accounts was by the direction of Nvidia/MSI themselves.
Suggested reading is the last few posts on this thread at Guru3D (post #67 onwards):
    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=364858
    One quote from Unwinder:
it will be standard 1175mV, similar to all other 680 on the market. Advanced core voltage control of Lightning will be totally disabled, so it won't be different comparing to any other 680.
Though there are still two ways round this.
    1) Continue to use version 2.2.3
    2) Use 2.2.4 (or later when it becomes available) but use the work around that Unwinder gives in a later post.
Looks like Nvidia is continuing to put the pressure on to prevent any sort of meaningful voltage adjustment.

Quote from: flobelix on 22-September-12, 02:52:20
Sadly Nvidia really dictated this cut down. MSI had to follow. I keep on using 2.2.3 which keeps everything as it should. Poor 660ti users have no choice as only 2.2.4 supports this model. Right now there is no workaround for that gpu.
It's a shame really, I already have a GTX 670 that does 1340/7406, but on Thursday I decided to buy the MSI GTX 670 OC PE, having read this:
Quote from: HardwareCanucks - MSI GTX 670 Power Edition OC Review
MSI’s cards have continually impressed us with their willingness to overclock to impressive levels. With a bit of coaxing via MSI’s AfterBurner software to maximize the Power Limit and add 100mV to the core and memory voltage (PLL was also increased by 50mV) the GPU hit an impressive 1388MHz while the memory petered out at 6524MHz. Both of those clock speeds are personal bests but we have a feeling like there’s more in the tank should MSI decide to release a GTX 670 Lightning.
For those of you wondering, at these speeds, the actual Boost clock we typically observed in games was between 1450MHz and 1465MHz.
    Source
I got my MSI GTX 670 OC PE on Friday, will see what it can do tomorrow, even at factory clocks it should be on par with a reference GTX 680, I only game at 1920x1200 anyway, so it will be great.

  • Msi gtx 670 PE throttling

    Hi!
I have a weird issue with my card. During for example 3dmark 11, this card throttles down gpu mhz. Even with stock clocks.
Power target never goes over 103%, even if i put it to the max 114%. Temperature never goes over 65ºC so that doesn't cause this.
Gpu mhz jumps all over the place :(
I don't understand what holds this card back??
Thanks, hopefully somebody understands my bad english!
    Immppa from finland

    Hello,
I have the same issue with my GTX 670 PE/OC.
The GPU is throttling everytime when the power reach ~100% (my temp are very low, like ~57° maximum with aggresive profil fan)
If the power is less than ~100%, the GPU is not throttling.
The problem is that on mostly all game, the power is above 100% with all details maxed out @ 1920*1080 (Guild Wars 2 / Crysis 2 / Far Cry 3 / Borderlands 2 ...)
On 3dmark 11, the card doesn't throttle only on the 4th bench !
Tested on Kombustor and it's worse, throttling on all test with a power of ~103-105% except two of them who the power are ~80-95% !
It's a real problem with a card who is designed for overclocking and max performance ... :/
I have the latest nvidia driver (310.70 WHQL) and it's a fresh install of windows 8 pro)

@SVet, I can do that if I get any issue. Just installed the card on a new machine and was thinking preventitive. I had heard that the N580GTX/OC had stabilitiy issues that required bios upgrades. Before I start crashing my machine, I was hoping to just go with a bios change that has worked for someone else.
It can't be used as each VGA is unique and require custom attention if issue occur.

  • GTX 670 Power Edition OC versions ?

    Hello.
Today I've got a question about the MSI GTX 670 Power Edition OC graphics card.
I'm about to buy this card but I've found that there are two version of it: MSI GTX 670 PE/OC and MSI GTX 670 PE/OC G ( notice a "G" at the end ).
The question is, what that "G" in the model name means, what are the differences ?
    Greetz, `NX.

I mean, I was wondering if going with Radeon 7970 wouldn't be a better idea
But I'm not sure of Radeons.
depends on your plans to use the card for! some games like Far Cry 3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs, Medal of Honor Warfighter , dragon age and some more respond better to AMD cards while alot of others are more geared towards Nvidia ones!
so what do you plan to do with your graphics card? generally Nvidia ones are better all round but it depends on what your doing with them to which way is better!

  • GTX 670 fps drops problem

    Hi,
I have problem with my new graphic card and don't know if it is driver issue or if it is defective graphic card or some other component is bottleneck ? Can you please help me?
    My PC
CPU: AMD Phenom II 1090T 3,2 GHz (is bottleneck?)
MB: ASUS M4N68T updated BIOS few days
GPU: MSI N670GTX-PM2D2GD5/OC installed 301.42 WHQL drivers and also tried older drivers from CD

    RAM: Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1600MHz 2x2GB +2x4GB
Monitor: LG W2242SM connected by VGA adapter (playing on 1680x1050)
    My problem is:
In games like battlefield 2, Crysis 2, ArmaII, Alice Madness Returns, Dragon age, Skyrim my fps drops very often.
For example in Battlefield 3 (Gulf of Oman) I start game with 80fps (setting: ULTRA 1680x1050) and after 2 minutes fps drop to about 30-20 or even 17 fps. I first thought it was only big scene with many details but when i stayed in same place about 1 minute it returned to 75fps but scene was still same.
    I tried:
    - Change details to High - even worse , Medium and Low - still remain,
    - Turn off- blur, v-sync - problem still remains
    - turn off anti aliasing - Problem remains
    - in nvidia control panel turn v-sync off and power management set to maximum performence, in windows too
    - re install drivers - clean installation ( i try all drivers available from MSI site and Nvidia too
    - Re install windows (windows 7 professional 64-bit)
    - uninstall MSI afterburner, than install newer one.
I took screenshot from MSI afterburner where you can see huge GPU usage drop in game.
    Thank you for any help
