GTX 680 Lightning very slow

Hello there,
I'm stuck with the installation of the graphic card MSI GTX 680 Lightning, which is very, very slow. For sake of comparison, it does not score even 9000 in 3D Mark, while my previous Radeon 5770 reached 17000 without any problem.
I tried several actions:
Remove drivers with drive sweeper under safe mode.
Installed updated drivers.
Reinstalled Win 7 64 bits
None of that make any difference. If I return to the previous card, the system works well again.
My PC is:
Processor: Intel Quad Core i7-960 (chipset Intel X58 (Tylersburg 36S) + ICH10R)
Mobo: XFX MB-X58I-CH19
Memory: 12 GB (Kingston 4096 MB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM triple channel)
HDs: SATA 3 Gb/s SAMSUNG HD321KJ and SATA 6 Gb/s ST2000DL003-9VT166
PSU: Corsair TX850
Operational System: Windows 7 64 bits Ultimate
Graphic card: MSI N680GTX Lightning 2 GB GDDR5 PCI-E 3
Does anybody have any idea on what should I do to make it work?
Could it be some incompatibility with my mobo?
Best regards,
Antonio Intini

What does gpuz say? (Can you post a screen shot)
Have you installed Afterburner? Is it throttling or anything when using kombuster?
Can you upload a copy of your vbios somewhere for svet to take a look?
<<<NVFLASH>>>
with syntax from cmd:
nvflash -b myrom.rom [ENTER]
then upload myrom.rom somewhere and give a link to it
Are you using the newest applicable bios for your mobo? (Since the booting is an issue this may be easy)
**EDIT: I have been having issue with LUCID MVP since I installed my 680 (not lightning though) I am not sure if that mobo is equiped, might want to try uninstalling if it is and see if it is better.
Hello Xmad,
I updated my BIOS today with the latest file from XFX. Good news: the processor speed is now OK, though SM2 and SM3 in 3dMark are still bad:
Overall score: 11715 (target 19200, but it was not above 8000 before the BIOS update)
SM2 score: 3791 (target 7300)
SM3 score: 5530 (target 10000)
CPU score: 4836 (target 4700) -> great!
I tried to use NVFlash, but it does not run in Win 7 64bits - do you have a version for 64 bits?
Apparently the graphic card works well with Kombustor benchmarkings:

Any suggestion of a next step?

    Thank you!

    Here you go: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=163242.0;attach=10606
.102 is the normal vbios and .112 is LN2.
Decompress the provided .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Then flash the desired file included with Nvflash for dos: http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/nvflash_download.html
To do so rename the included file to .rom and create a dos bootstick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0)
Put nvflash and the vbios file on it and boot from the stick. Then type nvflash -4 -5 -6 gop.rom (if renamed vbios that way) and hit enter. Confirm the questions and let the tool flash.

  • Gtx 680 lightning

ok hello all! i have just recently bought a new gtx 680 lightning 2 weeks ago for $400 the temps were fine from what i can remember 60c now all of a sudden the temps are rising, now i have just done a kombuster benchmark to see whats going on so i did 100% fan speed and it was hitting 80c  this is alot more than its done before when i did it at the start with my own fan curve it would hit 65c max but it hit 84c  with my fan curve so im not sure whats going on could it be the TIM?

it will not void the warranty unless you damage it but if your careful your warranty will be fine!
do not use Arctic silver 5 (contains silver) as its electrically conductive (if any of it gets between the small components and shorts them your warranty is done for as that's called user error as you used something conductive that shorted it out)! as a possible alternative use some Arctic MX-2 or MX-4 as they are ceramic and non conductive to electricity so are safe (will not short out anything even if it gets on stuff as contains no metal)!

  • MSI GTX 680 Lightning compatibility with Windows 64/ Asus P6T Deluxe MB

I purchased a GTX 680 Lightning on Dec. 16.  I've been having random PC lockups and Driver hangs/restarts. Here's what I have done so far to try and remedy the problem:
-started with MSI Afterburner version 2.2.5 BETA and Nvidia ( MSI provided ) drivers 301.42, and standard bios .
-upgraded to various newer versions of NVidia drivers, BETA and WHQL. Usually the newer drivers become even more unstable.
    -Upgraded to Afterburner 2.3
-I had the original bios versions first shipped with the card, I have since updated the BIOS:
            from 80.04.09.00.F7  --> 80.04.28.00.39
            from 80.04.09.00.F8  --> 80.04.28.00.3A  ( LN2 )
-NVidia control panel settings left at default, with Global/all profiles set to "prefer maximum performance".
-I originally had a GTX295 installed, so all drivers etc. were fully removed, followed by clean install of 301.40
-Afterburner 2.3.0 is installed, Core voltage is set to +12mv, and the power limit is set to 178%
-memtest run for hours on my memory, zero faults.
-furmark run for hours, no crashes
-3dmark run repeatedly with varying overclock settings in Afterburner, no crashes
The updated LN2 BIOS seems to be sllightly more stable, but I still see random crashes when running Windows media player, VLC Player, Internet Explorer. Its definately a problem between windows multimedia and the Nvidia drivers.  I can play Skyrim maxxed out, for hours, yet when I first login to the computer and run IE, it sometimes locks up.
I've had the driver stop and recover while Afterburner is monitoring on-screen, and sometimes the CPU load will spike to 100% at the crash, yet sometimes it does not. GPU power voltage always sits at 0.987 or 1.212V. matching the power spec expected for the LN2 BIOS.
I've had GPU-Z cause at least 1 lockup, with the screen blanking red. Only 1.
My next step will be to try updated drivers again, now that the bios has been updated. I may also downgrade Afterburner to 2.2.5 BETA.
Does anyone have any other recommendations I can try?  Can someone point me to the latest BIOS version for the card ( or can i try that hybrid BIOS now available? )
At what point do I give up and RMA the card?
    Card S/N is 602-V283-02SB1206030939
    Windows 7 Professional 64
    Corsair 12GB mem, matched sticks
69 GB SSD for the OS, a Raptor 320GB disk for the rest
Antec True Power Quattro 1000W power supply
    Asus P6T Deluxe MB   ( not v2 )
    Intel I7 cpu 2.93 Ghz

I'm going on 3 days of stable performance. I made 2 changes:
    1) core voltage in MSI afterburner upped to +87mV, power limit at 150%.
    2) I have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard, and am running the UPU-6 engine. This utility is designed to let the motherboard auto-switch from max power savings -> medium power savings -> max performance ( 100% CPU ) -> turbo mode (O/C CPU ).   I had this set on Auto, and I have re-set it manually to max-performance.
I think the EPU-6 engine was the problem, I am waiting for a few more days stability to prove the theory.
EUP-6 will lower your clock speed when idling, and then bump up your performance when you start doing things.  In my case I would go from playing a game ( Skyrim) to running IE, and EPU-6 would change modes DOWN.  In reverse, I would be doing nothing. then run IE or media player, and EPU-6 would change modes UP. Those state changes are where I think I was getting blackscreens and lockups.
I still don't understand it exactly, I think the combination of my MB changing power/performance AND the GTX680 also changing performce creates some kind of conflict.  I have had the Afterburner graph going when the driver crashed, and it shows the GPU power maxing out when the driver crashed. All other graphs bottom out ie. the whole card "hiccups".
So I will put the core voltage back to defaults, and also set the Nvidia display/performance options all back to defaults, and keep the EPUJ-6 engine stuck on max-performance, which is basically leaving the MB running at 100% stock CPU and power.  I expect that will prove stable and resolve the problem.
    Crossing my fingers.

  • MSI GTX 680 Lightning - No Signal/100% Fans

Hi, I recently built a computer, which contains an MSI GTX 680 Lightning. This is the first time I've built a computer so don't kill me if this has a simple solution.
The computer ran fine for a few months, then all the sudden I started getting a recurring issue where both my moniters show "No signal" and the 680's fans turn up to 100%, it stays like that and I have to reset the computer, after which it seems to run fine for a while and then it happens again unexpectedly.
The issue seems to happen more frequently when I'm playing games, but it also happens when I'm not even at the computer. Also, I haven't updated any drivers or anything recently so I don't think it would be that. This is pretty annoying, so any help would be appreciated.
    ~Thanks.

  • GTX 680 Lightning no display

Hi I am having problems with my GTX 680 Lightning  there is no output from the card I have also noticed that the blue disc like device on the card no longer lights up either please help

one last question whats the serial number of the card (so i can see if it is still in its warranty period)?
once i have checked that it is as its from its manufacture date for 3 years (the serial number contains the date it was made "if you do not want it to be public on here PM me the serial number") then Contact the reseller where you got the card from and ask them for a RMA as it sounds to me like its died!

  • GTX 680 Lightning DONT Overclock that well!!

    Hello.
I got 3 GTX 680 Lightning in 3 way, All with the golden F8 bios , the first card will run +500 on mem but the other 2 only +375 ...
    I got a max overclock at 1320 / 1690 Mhz.
    Core clock: +122
    Mem: +375
    vcore: +93
    Power target: +300%
I had 2 Evga 680 SC there overclocked like 5% worser than this, then I buyed this card I expted to hit alteast 1400Mhz, but no :( !
    Any help here?
Temps are fine, nerver over 80c.
OSB: what is best A8 or F8 bios ?

Overclocking is a matter of the individual sample and your oc result is already quite outstanding. You can't buy a card for expected (and a bit unrealistic) result of 1400Mhz gpu. As you are already at max voltage the card is simply maxed out.

  • GTX 680 Lightning now crashes to RED screen after RMA from March 2013

I had a GTX 680 Lightning crashing problem that required an RMA replacement back in March. Here's the thread I started about it: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=167822.msg1228389
Well, now I get a RED screen crash/restart every time I start any game. It happens within a few seconds to a few minutes, but it's consistent regardless of the game I play. Could this be another bad 680 after only 3 months?
    My system specs: MSI GTX 680 Lightning 2GB, MSI GT 640 1GB (dedicated PhysX), i5-2500K, Asus P8Z77-V, Coolermaster V8, 16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600, 4TB storage, Corsair HX1000, Dell 3008WFP, Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Red screens are usually caused by software isuues. First remove any monitoring software (like Afterburner) and retry. If no help try uninstalling current driver in safemode using >>Driver Fusion<< and power down. Remove the GT640 out of your system and restart. Install Nvidia driver and retry. For driver use the known good MSI driver 306.97: http://www.msi.com/service/download/driver-19780.html

  • GTX 680 4GB and slow render/export

Hopefully someone can help me out.
I used to have a crappy old graphic card and recently upgraded to a EVGA GTX 680 4GB (CLASSIFIED model).
    My systems specs are:
    i7 930 @ 2.8Mhz
    EVGA GTX 680 4GB
    Win 7 64 Ultimate
    24GB DDR3
PP CS6 (6.0.3) installed on SSD drive
Scratch disk - Source/Export are seperate drives (both 3TB USB 3.0 drives)
I am currently editing a music video with DSLR 1080p footage. At most, 2 layers of footage, basic transitions and some sharpening/color correction layers. Nothing that my old card was fussy about.
The MPE (GPU CUDA acceleration) is enabled in Premiere Pro. I do see a difference when building my clips, the timeline stays mostly yellow instead of completely red. My CPU isn't freaking out as it used to with my old card, so I do see a performance increase at that level.  However, if I try to render my timeline or export, it takes so long! To export my 3 minute music video clip, I takes approx. 43 minutes (in 720p).
I know each video project is unique, but similar projects processed with my old card appeared to be exported/rendered faster than with my new card.
What am I doing wrong? Any obvious pointers?
    Any help/tips will be appreciated.
    Thank you so much!

    =======
so even with a powerful GTX 680 4GB these rather basic video edits (color correction/de-noiser) will take that much time?
    =======
Todd has some stuff he wrote in help files about this stuff... spread out over various areas of forums ( ae, pre pro, etc. ).. and basically what you're getting out of cuda with cool card is very good and fast ( using graph card ram, gpu etc ). So really ...it does make editing faster and smoother etc...
BUT when you get to the export stage you're using the CPU , not the GPU anymore...although I think you can play around with pre rendering stuff and maybe then use 'rendered' files ...and gain a fraction of time on export.. I'm not experienced much with this at all...so what I'm saying is based on what I've read over the last year or so here in the forums etc.
What you call " basic" and simple really isn't so basic and simple in terms of what the program(s) is doing.. as the stuff has is really math intensive ( cpu is working it's little heart out )...and you are getting the product..but it's gonna take the time it takes using what it can use....
sorry, but there's no magic solution to making changes and then switching from gpu to cpu final export etc.
I just bought a custom made computer I call the " pig " ( it is HUGE )..and working with mov h264 native ( which is great cause before that had to be converted to avi etc ).. in the long run I save ton of time editing native with pig, but exports are slow even with pig...its fact of life , but cs6 and pig is doing well with it so far...

  • MSI Afterburner 2.2.4 - Voltage oc nerf for GTX 670 PE / GTX 680 Lightning

Looks like Nvidia has given MSI a bashing for allowing voltage adjustments with these cards.
Disappointing as the actual box states:
    Quote from: mikeo, OcUK Forums
Yet another new version just released:
    http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm#
    MSI Afterburner Version 2.2.4 (2012/9/18)
    -    Added new graphics cards support
    -    Change the NVIDIA Kepler series voltage control mode
And it's the 2nd item that is maybe of interest to those of us with Kepler based GPU's! Basically the GPU core voltage has been now locked for all cards (including the 680 Lightening and the 670 PE) to 1.175v. This by all accounts was by the direction of Nvidia/MSI themselves.
Suggested reading is the last few posts on this thread at Guru3D (post #67 onwards):
    http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=364858
    One quote from Unwinder:
it will be standard 1175mV, similar to all other 680 on the market. Advanced core voltage control of Lightning will be totally disabled, so it won't be different comparing to any other 680.
Though there are still two ways round this.
    1) Continue to use version 2.2.3
    2) Use 2.2.4 (or later when it becomes available) but use the work around that Unwinder gives in a later post.
Looks like Nvidia is continuing to put the pressure on to prevent any sort of meaningful voltage adjustment.

Quote from: flobelix on 22-September-12, 02:52:20
Sadly Nvidia really dictated this cut down. MSI had to follow. I keep on using 2.2.3 which keeps everything as it should. Poor 660ti users have no choice as only 2.2.4 supports this model. Right now there is no workaround for that gpu.
It's a shame really, I already have a GTX 670 that does 1340/7406, but on Thursday I decided to buy the MSI GTX 670 OC PE, having read this:
Quote from: HardwareCanucks - MSI GTX 670 Power Edition OC Review
MSI’s cards have continually impressed us with their willingness to overclock to impressive levels. With a bit of coaxing via MSI’s AfterBurner software to maximize the Power Limit and add 100mV to the core and memory voltage (PLL was also increased by 50mV) the GPU hit an impressive 1388MHz while the memory petered out at 6524MHz. Both of those clock speeds are personal bests but we have a feeling like there’s more in the tank should MSI decide to release a GTX 670 Lightning.
For those of you wondering, at these speeds, the actual Boost clock we typically observed in games was between 1450MHz and 1465MHz.
    Source
I got my MSI GTX 670 OC PE on Friday, will see what it can do tomorrow, even at factory clocks it should be on par with a reference GTX 680, I only game at 1920x1200 anyway, so it will be great.

  • GTX 680 Lightning Fan issue / noise

    Hi
So I've had my 680 Lightning for just over a year now and it's been working great with no issues at all, until i cleaned it. It needed a clean since it had a nice layer of dust on the heat-sinks. For starters who ever designed the card so you can't take the case off without taking the whole GPU cooler off isn't that smart,  it's a very badly designed since i can't clean the fan without voiding my warranty. ( Yes i know the fans spin up backwards to remove the dust on the GPU but over time you will still get a build up of dust on the heat-sink that needs to be removed )
Ok the issues is, when i was trying to remove the dust ( using a vacuum cleaner ) from one of the fans the plastic bit that is connected to the fan it self that holds the wires down broke, it's not causing any issues as the wires are not hitting the fans, i made sure of this. The real issue is that the other fan is making a high pitch noise / whine of sorts and it's driving me nuts( after cleaning ), the fans where very silent before the clean.
So where do i go from here? Is MSI willing to replace the fans? This issue would of never happened if i could of just taken the damn cover off in the 1st place since your fans going reverse on start up doesn't remove enough dust to not warrant a clean every once in a while.
Sorry if i sound :censored:ed but i paid over $630 Australian at the time when i bought it, it was marketed as an higher range card with the price to match it and for a higher range card one would expect to  be able to clean it when it needs.
I've used vacuum cleaners all my life to clean Case fans, GPU fans and CPU fans and never had an issue until now.

Fans or other spare parts aren't sold separately. If your vga is still covered by warranty contact MSI if seller refuses rma: >>How to contact MSI.<<
That of course means the vga needs to be rma'ed. Alternatively you can use an aftermarket cooler like Alpenfoehn Peter, Prolimatech MK26 or Accelero Xtreme III

Just noticed that the lower half of the blue LEDs on the back of my 680 Lightning flickering (the half closest to the motherboard) - most of the time they're a steady blue.

depend of VGA load the phases are switched on or off,
and those leds are their visual indicators.

when the card is in idle, not need phases will turned off to save power

Perhaps you should also check with the Afterburner support forum.

I am the moderator at the MSI "User to User" forum that gave that reply to him. I am a user of MSI products as are all of the mods over there and none of us are paid by nor employed by MSI. MSI does not write the code for Afterburner as you all should know and for him to come here bashing MSI & their support forum is uncalled for.
