GTX 770 Lightning vBios recovery and other questions

Hey I was just wondering, is 70C too hot becau- Just kidding.  Haha, gotcha.
Actual Question: I was messing about flashing higher and higher power/memory/clock settings and I went too high. Just as I get to the betta fish loading logo (I'm using the 8.1 preview) the screen goes black but does not sleep and I'm stuck there. So now I get to use the LN2 switch to boot, (I JUST researched LN2 and realized what I've been missing) but how do I flash a Normal mode vbios when I can only run in LN2 mode?
Also, just to be 100% safe: A UEFI/GOP vBios is backward compatible with a legacy MB right? I want to make sure I have a vbios to boot with. MY actual computer is an obnoxious Inspiron 546 from 2009... yea. I'm just borrowing this rig. The 770 is MINE though.
Another issue I cannot understand is that whenever I reach 99% GPU usage under ANY (Normal) vBios settings in ANY game with ANY driver the game freezes and crashes and MSI afterburner occasionally reports something crazy like 90129374% Power in a spike. I was actually trying to work around that by overclocking so much I'd never reach 99% GPU usage, but it still spikes for a split second and crashes me.
Finally, I'm highly curious about this vbios entry on techpowerup http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/141424/msi-gtx770-2048-130605.html The other two MSI GTX770 Lightning vbios's on this page http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?manufacturer=MSI&model=GTX+770 are the Normal and LN2 vbios's as it states at the bottom, but that third one says nothing on the bottom, and to further increase curiosity the version number has a more significant change in it. Has something been updated?
Oooh yes, one last thing. I've think I might have come across a bug in Svets vBios Tuner (2.49h). I can't set any P*state  higher than 2040 because I get a 'wrong parameter' error with anything above that. I used Kepler Bios Tweaker 1.25 to set it to 2104 and that worked, but appears as 4 in both Kepler Bios tweaker and Svets Tuner after that.
I know this is a lot of questions at once here, but I tend to save 'em up for a while. Thank you in advance. -Eli

If you have a non-nvidia vga left you can install it besides the lightning and use it for primary display. Then just use nvflash as usual to reflash a normal vbios (of course card needs to be switched to normal) and it will flash the nvidia adapter it finds (the Lightning). If you only have another Nvidia card left you'd have to identify the adapters name you want to flash (type nvflash --list and all adapters are listed). If then wanting to flash add the adapter name before the file to flash, e.g.: nvflash i1 vbios.rom (assuming i1 is the Lightning's name and vbios.rom is the name of the file to flash). Nvflash will then just flash the Lightning.
If you have no other vga you are out of luck. A PC-Shop can recover it for you.

If the board is really legacy bios (no UEFI at all) then theoretically yes. Of course the board needs to be compatible to the latest GTX770 series cards. Old mainboards might run into compatibility issues apart from the vbios.

Then your card is for whatever reason not stable (e.g. insufficient power supply, software issue, too much cpu overclock or simply the card not making factory settings - rma issue -).

Don't download vbioses from third party sites. The uploaders mostly have no clue of these files themselves. There is nothing newer than you got from Svet. Don't experiment.

  • GTX 770 Lightning - Vbios fan rpm adjustments not supported?

Hello Svet, thank you again for that UEFI/GOP vbios.  I've yet to setup everything for the fastest boot time - I'll post a screenshot/gif/something if I can get under 4 seconds to the desktop.
I was wondering if it is possible to change the min/max rpm's and fan%, I tried using your Tuner but it has no effect on rpm's or minimum fan speed. Also, what about experimental voltages past 1.212?
Using afterburner I can set the core to +100mv but it doesn't apply that constantly. And lastly, is there a defined/theoretical limit for the maximum board power and maximum target power or will I be stopped by heat before I can even get close? (I'm using the standard cooler in a (good)closed case for now.) I'm only asking because I have no idea where to STOP, and would rather not find out the hard way.

if the new settings has no effect over FAN behaviour then no,
its hardware limitation of FAN used on the card.
you can try with boot fan duty instead to see if that would work

i placed those optional, some Titan's users wanted to apply more than 1.212 [i think it should not be possible but they insisted] so allow them to test, try and set more since they wanted such.

anything above 1.212 is non standard and can be set via Afterburner only [and ofc. the card itself must be spacial one(like yours) to support it]

no such limits, the card itself would start auto throttling in a case of issue
its advisable to test with smaller steps[not huge jumps]

  • MSI GTX 770 Lightning LE Edition --- Original/LN2 strange overclock results

Ok guys this is very strange OVERCLOCK results!! On my gtx 770 Lightning LE card i have 2 bios which need to be physically move(switch) by my hand on Graphis Card!
In ORGINAL Bios my OC results is higher and better then on LN2 Bios
    MSI Settings on ORGINAL bios:
Name: GeForce GTX 770 Lightning LE
    Driver Version: 334.89
    Core Voltage: +100
    Power Limired +109%
    Core Clock: +150 Mhz  GPU-Z-> GPU CLOCK: 1222; Boost: 1274 ; GPU 2.0 Boost: 1306 Mhz
    Mmemory Clock: +500
    Picture of ORIGINAL BIOS: http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#j6zvj9n0u6dhla2
    LN2 BIOS:
    Name: GeForce gtx 770
    Driver Version: 334.89
    Core Voltage: +12
    Power Limited: +109%
    Core Clock : +110Mhz ;  GPU-Z-> GPU CLOCK: 1182; Boost: 1234 ; GPU 2.0 Boost: 1267 Mhz
    Memory Clock: + 500Mhz
    Picture of LN2  BIOS: http://www.mediafire.com/view/myfiles/#oq818435y296uj3
With LN2 BIOS we need to have more OVERCLOCK potential or not? For me ORGINAL bios give me more OVERCLOCK potential than LN2 BIOS. Why is it so?

Quote from: flobelix on 26-March-14, 04:10:14
Obviously you don't understand. LN2 allows to set higher voltages not increase oc potential with the same settings. When setting less extra voltage in LN2 than in normal vbios results can't be better.
Then why is voltage on "LN2 BIOS" only +12 and on ORIGINAL BIOS much better  +100?
    Look this: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2013/09/22/msi_geforce_gtx_780_lightning_video_card_review/3#.UzHuZPldWio
He have more OC potencial with LN2 BIOS! I really don't understand! And in Afterburner writes: MSI gtx 780 Lightning (LN2)
And when is my card on ORIGINAL bios in Afterburner writes " Graphics Card: MSI GTX 770 Lightning LE"
When is card on LN2 bios in Afterburner writes "Graphics Card: GeForce gtx 770"

  • MSI GTX 770 LIGHTNING - Unexpectedly Powers Off During 3DMark Demo (Ice Storm)

I run the 3DMark demo (I believe Ice Storm is the benchmark) on my PC containing this MSI GTX 770 LIGHTNING and at about 15 seconds or so, my PC suddenly powers off. I know that at least somebody else has experienced this issue before, but is this a common/semi-common problem? Is it something to be worried about? If I were to run other things (games, benchmarks, etc.) fine but still have problems with this demo, would that be indicative of an issue with the demo, or an issue with over-stressed hardware that still needs to be RMAed?
All other benchmarks runs fine, like even UNIGINE HEAVEN or games are now stable.   PSU IS:

I simply can't get past the 1:38 mark without my computer fully turning off by itself during this Ice Storm video benchmark. I quickly checked the temps right after I turned my computer on after this crash and they didn't seem anything out of the ordinary. So, what do you think my problem is?

It has the max amps that's possible for this wattage.
    It has more than enough

  • GTX 770 LIGHTNING

    Hello everyone,
I'm planning to buy a pair of GTX 770 LIGHTNING and go for SLI. Additionally, I also intend to use my old GTX 560 for PhySX. What will be the total PSU requirement ?. Some people recommend that I buy a 1500W PSU- Is that much power really necessary ?. Secondly, What will be the more powerful solution- a pair of GTX 770 LIGHTNING on SLI or a single GTX 780 ?. Thirdly, the specification of the GTX 770 LIGHTNING says it's HDMI-Output revision is version 1.4a. Does this mean that I have to buy a 1.4a hdmi cable, or my current 1.4 hdmi cable will do ?
    Thank you all in advance.

A system with a single GTX770 requires 42A and a 600W PSU minimum. For a pair in SLI I wouldn't use anything below a quality 750W - 800W psu with at least 60A on +12v. More would be safer. Using a GTX560Ti for Physx (what I wouldn't recommend as the 770 pair is sufficient for all Physx games including Borderlands2 with max Physx settings) would make a quality 1000W psu of 80A on +12v minimum recommended.

Powerful is relative. The Lightnings will deliver more FPS in benchmarks than a single 780 but may suffer from SLI typical issues like micro stuttering. If micro stuttering bothers you or if you even notice it depends on your individual feel. For me GTX680 SLi experience has been always fine. For some none the less a higher class single gpu might feel faster and games more smoothly despite lower average FPS. If I were you I'd consider buying the 780 and save the rest of the money to upgrade to a 2nd GTX780 later. Buying to lower class vgas instead of one higher class one is usually a bad idea.
HDMI depends on your screen. If it doesn't support special 1.4a 3D features it is pretty irrelevant.

  • GTX 770 Lightning LE vs GTX 770 Lightning difference?

    Hi everyone!
I plan to buy MSI GTX 770 but I would like to know what is the difference between MSI GTX 770 Lightning LE and (more expensive) MSI GTX 770 Lightning, beside GPU clock speed? Does Lightning LE have 12 phase VRM, back plate and GPU reactor?
    Thanks in advance!

its the normal and boost clocks that are the differences!
GTX770 Lightning LE - normal clock 1072MHz, Boost clock 1137MHz
    GTX770 Lightning - normal clock 1150MHz, Boost clock 1202MHz
it has a higher clock speed on the GTX 770 Lightning and the GTX 770 Lightning LE is a lower performing version to sell cards that are the same but the GPU doesn't match the expected normal specs for a Lightning!

This is the newest version listed on the website : http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N770_TF_2GD5OC.html#download
And thats an ss from GPU-Z, cant find the exact bios version in that downloadable zip from msi website and i cant seem to find the date created for the bios I have on my card now.
Having some problems with gpu load drops and microstuttering, so wondering if a bios update might sort out my problems.

The vbios on MSI site is a different vbios series (NV282MS.331) and older than your current vbios. Your vbios (NV282MS.352) is dated 06/18/13 while the one from MSI site is dated 06/11/13. Both are legacy vbios versions (no GOP support). You can try the latest hybrid vbios (GOP support) which is NV282MH.351. It is attached.
