Gtx 970, Core Clock Spike Normal?

Is it normal for my gpu1 core clock to have small, consistent spikes?  http://i.imgur.com/8DcQxY7.png?1
I recently updated my drivers since some older drivers would make the fan in the msi gtx 970 4g have consistent spikes.  Looks like that's gone, but I'm not sure if this is normal for my core clock.
EDIT:  Derp... that's the fan tachometer, sorry.  Looks like it's still having the same problems.  Has anyone found a fix for this yet?  I know I can rollback to 344.16... I've been using that up until now, but I had to update to 344.75 in order to use Physx on High on Borderlands 2.  This sucks :(.

It is a vell known problem. There is a fix and it is also anounced through this forum. You should update your bios for your MSI GTX 970 card. Please see this thread: Fix for GTX970/980 Fans Randomly Turning On issue

  • Gtx 970 Memory clock halved

2 weeks ago I bought a new MSI GTX 970 gaming 4G VGA. I ran some tests yesterday thanks to some random black screen crashes, and according to Furmark,HwInfo and Afterburner  my memory clock is only at 3505 MHz. Now I am not understanding this part so well, but wasn't it supposed to be 7010 MHz as it was stated on MSI page too?
Can anybody be so kind and explain if this is bad or not, if it is locked by some software possibly or what?

    GDDR5 is based on DDR3.
It can open two memory pages at once.
That 7000MHz is not the clock, that's the bandwidth.
GDDR5 with 7GB/s data rate has a clock of 1750MHz.
    2 x 1750MHz = 3500MHz.
    Clear enough, isn't it?

CORSAIR VENGEANCE 12 gig ram ( 3*4g ) <-- that will cause a performance hit as you will be in single channel on the memory not dual channel! (on that platform you need even numbers of sticks and a odd amount will force single channel only (for max performance its 2 or 4 slots populated))
it could possibly be contributing to you issue!
Badboy2k first of all thanks for the very quick response! Secondly, does it mean that I would have to pluck out 1 of them? And is there any order or position I have to place them in? I had 4 sticks but 1 of it was spoilt so I took it out...

  • Should i boost my memory clock when i boost my core clock? (gtx 970)

ive oced my msi 4g gtx 970 to 1400mhz, i have also boosted my memory clock to 1803mhz, what will boosting the memory clock do ? will it just increase fps and performance like increasing the core clock would.

I was able to OC my Gaming 970 350+MHz on the memory clock. I have to say that I have never owned a GPU that is as powerful as this one. I have owned an MSI TF 7950 Boost OC edition, a Gaming 760 in SLI and 3 way SLI with 2 EVGA 760s and recently upgraded to this awesome BEAST of a GPU at Christmas!!! I LOVE YOU MSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • MSI GTX 660 TF 2GD5/OC (SLI) Running at 50% Core clock

    Hello there,
In my home setup, I have two MSI GTX 660 TF 2GD5/OC cards installed in my Mainboard (ASRock 970 Extreme4) in an SLI configuration (together with a bridge, of course). I would say that everything is running fine.
Though, with 3D mark, my core clock seems to be clocking in at 549 Mhz
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/738108
While in the official specifications, 1098 seems the normal rate (hm, that is exactly 50% slower).
    http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N660-TF-2GD5-OC.html#/?div=Specification
I am using the latest (BETA) Nvidia Driver 326.41 driver.
I have the feeling something is off, and my 3Dmark is actually a lot lower then it should be, since installing the 2nd card, my performance with Rise of the Triad 2013 and Super Street Fighter AE seems to have dropped (I can barely play in 3D anymore, while I had no problem doing so with a single card, and according to the Nvidia site, SSFIVAE supports 3D and SLI).
Can you guys give me some pointers what might be the problem? Thanks in advance!

  • MSI GTX 275 Lightning Core Clock problems

    Gooday
I've had my MSI GTX 275 lightning Edition card now for about 1.5 years, when i play games the core clock runs at its full speed of 702 Mhz, then when im in Windows, its drops to 301 Mhz (understandable, 2 different modes 3d/2d, i think), but now when i play games and dont alt-tab or anything it runs @ 702, but the minute i alt-tab just to check something on the net i start getting problems, when i switch back to the game it switches smoothly and perfect, but 30 minutes sown the line the whole display freezes,(but the game sounds continue) then if alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del its runs it fine but from then on the card FORCES the core clock down to 400Mhz and i have to restart the pc to get to to normal. and it does that even more often if msiafterburner is running (but also when i uninstalled it)
Why would it do that?, the core doesnt get hot, i leave the fan on 100%(core temp=45-60'C)
    Extra info :
    Drivers=270.61 (same on 266, and 258)
same happens if i oc to 740
    psu is 600W Vantec (2x 22 amp 12V rail)
    Core i7 920 (no oc)
    7 GB Ram
    Windows 7 x64 SP1 ultimate

Sorry i forgot to add that to the first post, yep, re-installed windows, with/out SP1 with th different driver versions and also with/out or different gpu programs ie afterburner evga precision, riva tuner. The problem wasnt noticeable for about a year then lately it got worse and worse. I thought it was afterburner and the settings but without afterburner the game would only freeze much later on (few more hours) i saw (sorry cant say were exactly) that other users also had similar problems, where the game would get very choppy and windows would say "display driver stopped responding...) mine doesnt tell me that, the game would freeze and/or get a black screen and then few seconds later it would return but most of the time with the Forced down (400mhz) clock but windows didnt pick up display probs

  • My GTX 580 OC will not drop the core clock frequency when idle

    The model is N580GTX-M2D15D5/OC .
I have read some reviews said that the GTX580 drops the core clock down to about 50MHz when idle. But my card will always stay at 823MHz. Is this a issue or it's just working as intended? Can i have the clock auto-tunable?
    Thanks in advance

  • GTX 970 Gaming 4G can't overclock above 1398MHz

Hi, I was trying to use MSI Afterburner to overclock the GTX 970 GAMING 4G to around 1411MHz (+120 above 1291MHz) but the card seems to downclock to 1398MHz all the time. I've checked if this is due to insufficient voltage but power maxes out at 90% while the voltage hits 1.2v at 1401MHz for a short while before falling to 1.18v at 1398MHz. I've increased the Temp. Limit to 87 degrees (linked to a power limit of 107%) but it seems like the card won't go above 80 degrees. Please help.

OC is a plastic lottery. I just got MSI Gaming 780Ti and it handled +250 Core clock and +600Mem clock. Not sure if that is good or bad but in OCCT gpu stress test it gave me around 30fps more compared to stock clocks (gaming mode) yet the card was around 63 with fans at 40% (it is damn extremely cool!!).
Cool the card enough first so it doesnt go above 75. Else the OC might be successful but will throttle due to high temp

  • MSI GeForce GTX 970 TwinFrozr V backplate available/planned?

Anyone know if MSI plans/has a backplate for their MSI GeForce GTX 970 TwinFrozr V?
I'm looking to upgrade my cards and was looking at a couple of these, but really wanted a backplate for them.
    Thanks
Anyone know when these cards will even be available to buy?!
I tried emailing MSI, but their site is a mess for registering and asking for support/help. Not sure if they even got my messages :(

Like already said no passive cooling is required on the back as the vram doesn't require any. The normal case airflow is sufficient. A backplate on the back of some manufacturer's cards are just for the look of the card. Your fingers are a bad indicator for the temperatures of electronic components.
I agree with the previous post.
Did you see how much the cards without an back plate sag? I do, my previous MSI GTX 660ti PE had a very bad sag and only at the end of the card.
If you have back plate its quite obvious that the vrm's get cooled much better and it ads some rigidity to the card as well. I am an member of overclock.net forum and they complain about the vrm temps compare to the Gigabyte versions. The vrms get much hotter on the MSI gaming than on the G1 from Gigabyte.
I am not saying that gigabyte is better than MSI or they clock higher, in fact, i have 14K score in Firestrike so i am good, but i am only pointing out that a GPU WITH back plate has better cooling and rigidity.

  • GTX 970 OC

Hi guys i just got this card recently, and first off the Gaming app will not load, pops up icon in task bar then vanishes, but leaves the service running. But to my understanding the card is supposed to be default on the gaming mode and then can use app to OC or go silent, but my cpu-z says i'm half the mem clock and around half the Core which i'm guessing is silent settings? can someone point me in right direction

Oh just to add this is the GTX 970 4GD5T OC, S/N 602-v316-020b1501000386
Your card does not the support the Gaming APP as it is no Gaming series vga. In case of GTX 970 this means the GTX 970 GAMING 4G. GTX 970 4GD5T OC is obviously no Gaming card and therefor just to be tweaked via Afterburner. It does also not offer various profiles (Silent, Gaming, OC) like a Gaming series vga but just one profile (Boost Clock / Base Clock 1241 MHz / 1102 MHz).
However the card like all GTX 9xx is using dynamic power saving and will clock down without load. The full clockrate is only applied under load. Therefor there is no issue if clockrates are as marketed under load. Run a 3d game and check with Afterburner OSD: >>How to use MSI Afterburner<<

To check if there is a vbios update add your current vbios saved to file (.zip/.rar and attach or upload to some file hoster and add link).

  • GTX 970 3.5 Ram issue

So we have now had it confirmed that the specification of the 970 GTX was wrong. These specifications were released by Nvidia and these were the specifications printed on the box of my MSI Gaming 970 4G. Namely that card has 4G of Vram running on a 256 bit bus. In reality we now know that only 7/8th (3.5G) of the 4G vram operates at the expected 224 Gb/sec memory bandwidth. We also know that the cards performance will seriously degrade in scenarios where a game tries to access that last 0.5G of vram.
Games increasingly used up more Vram when using high res texture packs. Also running higher resolutions and sli profiles require much more Vram and can easily exceed 3.5G.
What are MSI's thoughts on this issue?
The new MSI 970 Me100 editions, is this a true 4G card or will it also be limited to an effective memory pool of 3.5G??

Quote from: Airjarhead on 01-February-15, 07:13:57
Sure, Nvidia, MSI, EVGA, Asus, etc. mislead us with the whole 3.5GB+512MB issue, but I don't think it was an egregious lie.  It was more a marketing issue.  After all, it is 4GB of total RAM, it just doesn't function as we would expect 4GB to function (as with GTX 980).  On this matter, I can see the manufacturer's/board partner's/retailer's point.
It is also true that the GTX 970 is still the same card (benchmark wise), that we bought after seeing the very first reviews.
HOWEVER...the following specifications prove a lie that can not be explained away with Marketing terms or benchmarks:
    Advertised ROPs: 64
    Actual ROPS: 56
    Advertised L2 Cache: 2MB
    Actual L2 Cache: 1.75MB
This is false advertising.  This is the lie.  This is why I am angry, and I do not understand why any user would defend Nvidia/board partner's/retailer's for this.
I don't think people is defending nVIDIA or AIBs in the first place. I have absolute no doubt anyone that bought the card liked to find the card was advertised with wrong specs. I know I am p***ed at nVIDIA - and nVIDIA alone -, because what they did. They now say there was a "missunderstanding between PR and engineering" and I believe them; what I find hard to believe is that not a single engineer noticed the PR mess before January 2015. But, this is a different discussion and I'm only speculating.
What I don't accept (and I think that is what some owners are having issues with), is the card having a flawed design; that is not working as intended. I defend nVIDIA engineers decision to cut the L2 cache so die-harvesting GTX 970 capable GPUs would increase, thus reducing the price. And at this moment, knowing the card's true specs I'm even more astonished with my GTX 970 performance. It really does more with less. And does it for €350 (that was how much it cost me). Plus, it completely destrois the GTX 780 I had before (and sold for €300 after using it for 18 months).
For nVIDIA to come out with a "new" GTX 970 with same ROP and L2 cache as GTX 980, they have to price it higher because is harder to harvest dies that will fill those specs.
And here's the ugly truth: if such a card cames out, it will stutter exactly the same as present GTX 970 stutters. Why? Because it will have the same CUDA CORES as the present GTX 970. The card will get out of "cuda core" power long before getting out of VRAM. The GTX 970 as is, has 1664 CUDAs that can handle with 52 pixels per clock, while the ROPs can handle 56 pixels per clock. Do you see where the bottleneck is?
So, having ROPs being capable of handling 64 pixels per clock would do anything for the GTX 970 unless the CUDA count increases - in which case, we will end up with a GTX 980.

  • N660 TF 2GD5/OC - Core clocks keep spiking to maximum since PSU change

Hi, the core clocks on my GTX 660 Twin Frozr III have been spiking to maximum when browsing or just opening/closing programs since changing to a Corsair RM 750W PSU (their new model).
Looking at GPU-Z when this is happening (see pic below), the GPU load is under 5% so I don't know why this is happening.
    Here's my system information:
    Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD4H, BIOS F1, i5-3470, Windows 8 64 bit
    Corsair 2x4GB CMX8GX3M2B1600C9
    Corsair RM 750W PSU
    MSI N660 TF 2GD5/OC
    Corsair Neutron 128GB SSD
    Samsung SH-B123L Blu-Ray Rom Drive
My CPU & GPU are both at stock speed and I have done a virus scan with Kaspersky which was negative. Also using latest 327.23 WHQL drivers.
    Any help appreciated.

    Many thanks for your reply
I guess I'll accept this is normal behaviour then. I think it's because I've now got a quieter PSU (fan only spins up on 40% load) that I can hear the GPU fan briefly spinning up & down every time the power state changes. Which is only slightly annoying, but with my OCD tendencies becomes magnified.
The only workaround I've found so far is to use Nvidia Inspector's multi display power saver mode, so I'll stick to that for now and maybe wait for the next generation of cards from AMD and Nvidia before upgrading and maybe finding a card that works better with my PSU.

  • MSI GTX 970 4GD5T OC

Hi. I just bought another msi gtx 970 4gd5t oc and have been using them in sli. I noticed that the max core clock for both cards is now 1291 mhz in games. when it was just one it was 1329. Also i checked the bios in msi live update on the new one and it is nv316mh.191 but when i scan for updates it doesnt show up for any new ones. the old msi gtx 970 4gd5t oc bios is nv316mh.192 .  i remember there was a bios update for it when i first got it in live update.
can i update the bios manually to nv316mh.192 somehow? and would it void my warranty?

do not update the other with the VBIOS of your other card as you will run the risk of bricking it as tiny number differences usually signify that the 2 cards have different VRAM chips that required a different profile on each! if you flashed the higher number one onto the other you have a 50/50 chance of its going to be either going to have Erratic behaviour or it will be dead or damaged voiding the warranty as you put a VBIOS not meant for that card on it that caused the issue and you would have to pay MSI to fix it!
if you want a updated VBIOS if available  svet or one of the others can check that for you but you need to supply 2 pieces of information!
1: Serial Number of the card (EG: 000-0000-000000000000000) <-- you can leave off the last 3 digits so it has no identifying information...
2: a copy of the current VBIOS on the card
