GTX 970 vs. 980

Do stats exist comparing these two directly in APP (all else being equal)?
Have a defective 970 and considering a 980, but wondering if it's worth the extra cost. In other words, does the extra cost yield significant real world performance gains in APP?

This would get a better response in the "hardware forum" ...

  • NVidia GTX 970 or 980 experience

There has been some issues reported surrounding the Nvidia GTX 970 addressing memory above 3.5 GB (it comes with 4 GB Ram).
I think this issue is likely a non issue with Premier or other cc products.
Does anyone have experience with either the GTX970 or GTX980 that you would like to share.
I am considering the CC version and these cards appear as if they would do well in a probably configured machine.
    Intel i7 - Windows 7 64 bit - 32GB Ram - SSD Drives, etc.
    Thank you.

We have a number of very good results with both boards on our Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM) web site.

  • GTX 970 HDMI Port

    Hi Guys,
i'm wondering if the newly announced GTX970 from MSI has an HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 1.4a Port.
The MSI Website states the latter, although the 'reference' model as well as some custom cards from other manufacturers having a HDMI 2.0 connection would suppose it is 2.0. I checked some German stores (since I live in Germany) and they either don't specificate the HDMI version at all or say 2.0.
I think this is rather important, because having a 1.4 port would mean only one port (the DP) would support 4k@60Hz, let alone GSync
Does anyone have some more information on this? Thank you!

    Quote from: badboy2k on 20-September-14, 01:51:52
the GTX 980 and GTX 970 both have HDMI 2.0 ports as that's what they use by the NVIDIA spec for it so it should be that as it will be to spec!
Someone should contact the people responsible for the product web page and get that updated as soon as possible.  I have been on many forums where members are avoiding the MSI card for that reason alone and are ordering EVGA cards instead even though they are louder and have a possible coil whine issue.

  • Any idea when GTX 970's will be added to the supported list in the latest version of premiere? id like my cuda.

Any idea when GTX 970's will be added to the supported list in the latest version of premiere? id like my cuda.

I Too would like to know. I've finally finished upgrading my rig with a 970, and as far as I know, there's been some good things and not so good things. (I'm on CC 2014.1 with Windows 8.1 Pro) I'll post screenshots when I get back to my computer.
FIrst things first: Make sure to install the CUDA specific to the 970/980. They have their own toolkit, that I believe people miss. I installed this, and then manually added my card to te supported cards file in the Premiere, AE, and Speedgrade files. When I opened Premiere, it's automatically set to use CUDA acceleration, so I believe it's supported there. I wasn't able to test this, unfortunately. I will confirm this soon.
Second, when I open After Effects, the Previews preference pane states my card is supported, and all the info below it seems correct, like the shader model. The only thing that seems off is the OpenGL, which is set to 2.1.2 NVIDIA or something of the like instead of 4.x, but I believe its an NVIDIA optimized driver, so I'm not too concerned. The big thing for me is the error message that I recieve when I try to enable Ray-traced 3D. I recieve a compilation error, followed by another message, and I have no clue what to do with them.
I'm really hoping Adobe releases an updates that bring full native support for these cards, as I'm running an class at my high school where I need to build three machines, all of which will have a 970 inside, and if Adbe doesn't support these cards, I'm kind of screwed as the pipeline is based completely in Adobe with its Dynamic Link and CUDA acceleration. Come on Todd, we believe in you!
TL;DR     Yes, CUDA acceleration should work within Premiere Pro CC 2014.1, but make sure to install the correct CUDA drivers from NVIDIA (they should be in the yellow boxed text on the downloads page)

  • MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G - Fans not spinning question

    Hi there.
I've read several post in this forum about fan issues with the 970 & 980 platform, as well as complaints regarding coil whine in a handful of hardware blogs.
As this threadhttps://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183618.msg1317790#msg1317790 was closed at the beginning of November and hasn’t seen an update or further clarification, I wanted to ask what the status of MSI's investigation on the discussed problems is. Are they solved in the newer batches (and if so, how could I spot a new revision of these cards), or are fan & coil whine problems still present to this day?
I already ordered a GTX 970 4G, but became so unsure of my decision through these issues not being declared as officially solved, that I ultimately cancelled it.
Looking forward hearing back from you.
    Best,

  • MSI GeForce Gtx 970 Coil Whine noise threw headset/stereo

Hi, I recently got an MSI GeForce Gtx 970 and for some odd reason, when I boot up a game it starts making some sort of Coil Whine noise which is not coming from my computer, it's coming from my headset or stereo. The noise kind of sounds like an electric tooth brush. And I have read many reviews on this graphics card and people are saying that they are hearing a Coil Whine noise coming from the graphics card, but me it's my headset. It may be an interference. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hey man,
I am not sure about this completely but I know my buddy has a gtx 980 and he gets coil whine. It also affects his headphones when they are plugged in. He told me the sound is much better when he got a set of USB head phones. G430 ones I think.

  • GTX 970 MSI Gaming App

    Hello,
I installed GTX 970 Gaming and reinstalled Windows 8.1. Driver is from MSI website - 344.16.
When I start MSI Gaming App it says The platform does not support this application.
I read other threads but I couldn't find solution.

The Problem is that the Version from Online Produkt Page(1.0.0.21 or 2.0.0.21) is outdated and does not support the GTX970/980.
You have to install GAMINGAPP-Utility from included CD. Must be Version 3.0.0.5.

  • GTX 970 Gold Edition

    Had read about it recently....
    http://www.techpowerup.com/206844/msi-unveils-geforce-gtx-970-gold-limited-edition.html
    Have 2 questions:
    1) how come Limited Edition already if current Non Limited Edition is not fully sorted out yet?
    2) Backplate?... so it IS possible?
But mean things aside - its a piece of beauty, seriously. And backplate - can MSI make add on kits for 970 and 980 owners to buy (cheap)?

Quote from: Neqsus on 10-November-14, 15:01:16
So can anyone speculate on when they'll be getting this card out, maybe based on past limited edition releases? I'm looking at getting an MSI 970 Gaming, but I'm really not crazy about the red (I know, I'm probably the only one). I'm crossing my fingers that they'll get it out by 2015, I don't want to wait any longer than that to upgrade from my 550ti -.-
Also, what "issues" are there left to be sorted out with the current gaming card? I've heard some reports about fan noise, but given EVGA's lower quality components and cooler problems, ASUS's poor OC ability, and the massive size of the Gigabyte cards I'm pretty set on the MSI 970.
    Thanks for any insight!
-this graphic card uses an 8 phase power delivery system (6 for GPU, 2 for memory). BUT the voltage regulator on this card (OnSemi NCP81174) is designed to use only 4 phases. in reality this MSI card is nothing more than a reference card with a needlessly oversized cooler.
-this thing can NOT use a solid SLI bridge. you need to use a ribbon style SLI bridge. the plastic shield of the cooler sticks out about an inch over the SLI connectors. and this REALLY sucks because i wanted to use the pretty nVidia SLI bridge that has a glowing logo on it.
if they were going to go with this stupid giant fan design they could have at least thrown in some free extra long ribbon SLI bridges with the cards. but that's a minor thing.
more importantly, the Asus GTX 970 STRIX uses an 8 phase capable voltage regulator (IRF ASP1212) and costs the same. there is no excuse for going cheap on what is essentially the 3rd most important component on this card (behind the GPU itself and the memory). even the much hated EVGA GTX 970 uses a 5 phase voltage controller!!!

  • Gtx 970, Core Clock Spike Normal?

Is it normal for my gpu1 core clock to have small, consistent spikes?  http://i.imgur.com/8DcQxY7.png?1
I recently updated my drivers since some older drivers would make the fan in the msi gtx 970 4g have consistent spikes.  Looks like that's gone, but I'm not sure if this is normal for my core clock.
EDIT:  Derp... that's the fan tachometer, sorry.  Looks like it's still having the same problems.  Has anyone found a fix for this yet?  I know I can rollback to 344.16... I've been using that up until now, but I had to update to 344.75 in order to use Physx on High on Borderlands 2.  This sucks :(.

  • GTX 970 3.5 Ram issue

So we have now had it confirmed that the specification of the 970 GTX was wrong. These specifications were released by Nvidia and these were the specifications printed on the box of my MSI Gaming 970 4G. Namely that card has 4G of Vram running on a 256 bit bus. In reality we now know that only 7/8th (3.5G) of the 4G vram operates at the expected 224 Gb/sec memory bandwidth. We also know that the cards performance will seriously degrade in scenarios where a game tries to access that last 0.5G of vram.
Games increasingly used up more Vram when using high res texture packs. Also running higher resolutions and sli profiles require much more Vram and can easily exceed 3.5G.
What are MSI's thoughts on this issue?
The new MSI 970 Me100 editions, is this a true 4G card or will it also be limited to an effective memory pool of 3.5G??

Quote from: Airjarhead on 01-February-15, 07:13:57
Sure, Nvidia, MSI, EVGA, Asus, etc. mislead us with the whole 3.5GB+512MB issue, but I don't think it was an egregious lie.  It was more a marketing issue.  After all, it is 4GB of total RAM, it just doesn't function as we would expect 4GB to function (as with GTX 980).  On this matter, I can see the manufacturer's/board partner's/retailer's point.
It is also true that the GTX 970 is still the same card (benchmark wise), that we bought after seeing the very first reviews.
HOWEVER...the following specifications prove a lie that can not be explained away with Marketing terms or benchmarks:
    Advertised ROPs: 64
    Actual ROPS: 56
    Advertised L2 Cache: 2MB
    Actual L2 Cache: 1.75MB
This is false advertising.  This is the lie.  This is why I am angry, and I do not understand why any user would defend Nvidia/board partner's/retailer's for this.
I don't think people is defending nVIDIA or AIBs in the first place. I have absolute no doubt anyone that bought the card liked to find the card was advertised with wrong specs. I know I am p***ed at nVIDIA - and nVIDIA alone -, because what they did. They now say there was a "missunderstanding between PR and engineering" and I believe them; what I find hard to believe is that not a single engineer noticed the PR mess before January 2015. But, this is a different discussion and I'm only speculating.
What I don't accept (and I think that is what some owners are having issues with), is the card having a flawed design; that is not working as intended. I defend nVIDIA engineers decision to cut the L2 cache so die-harvesting GTX 970 capable GPUs would increase, thus reducing the price. And at this moment, knowing the card's true specs I'm even more astonished with my GTX 970 performance. It really does more with less. And does it for €350 (that was how much it cost me). Plus, it completely destrois the GTX 780 I had before (and sold for €300 after using it for 18 months).
For nVIDIA to come out with a "new" GTX 970 with same ROP and L2 cache as GTX 980, they have to price it higher because is harder to harvest dies that will fill those specs.
And here's the ugly truth: if such a card cames out, it will stutter exactly the same as present GTX 970 stutters. Why? Because it will have the same CUDA CORES as the present GTX 970. The card will get out of "cuda core" power long before getting out of VRAM. The GTX 970 as is, has 1664 CUDAs that can handle with 52 pixels per clock, while the ROPs can handle 56 pixels per clock. Do you see where the bottleneck is?
So, having ROPs being capable of handling 64 pixels per clock would do anything for the GTX 970 unless the CUDA count increases - in which case, we will end up with a GTX 980.

  • Different versions of GTX 970 Gaming?

    Hi all,
I have just received 2 MSI GTX 970 Gaming. And they are different. First off, they are both GTX 970, they say so in the box, GPU-Z confirms it, and I have no problem using them in SLI. But they are different physically. One of them is slightly larger and has a piece of what seems to be a retention bracket close to the rear I/O. Its sort of like the 980 cooler version:
    http://www.tweaktown.com/image.php?image=imagescdn.tweaktown.com/content/6/7/6710_02_msi_geforce_gtx_980_4gb_twin_frozr_v_gaming_oced_video_card_review_full.jpg
And it has the 84.04.31.00.F1 bios. The second one doesnt have that retention piece of metal and is slightly shorter. This cooler seems to be the "standard" one, as is the one I can see in most reviews:
    http://www.overclockers.ua/video/msi-gtx970-gaming-4g/03-big-msi-gtx970-gaming-4g.jpg
And it has the 84.04.36.00.F1 bios. So it has a newer bios. Can anyone please throw some light into this? Are there different cooler versions of the MSI GTX970?
Thanks a lot for your help!

  • GTX 970 not working the way it should.

Hello, I bought a msi gtx 970 yesterday but it is not working good. I can not even play league of legends without stuttering. When I play on maximum settings it says 60 fps, but in fact it is stuttering. The memory clock keeps shooting up to 3506 and than goes down again, this keeps happening. When I had call of duty advanced warfare open for 10 minutes, not even being in a game, the gpu usage is 98% and the memory use is extremely high, while nothing is happening on the screen, just some menus.
All drivers are downloaded and previous drivers from my old video card are removed.
    These are my pc specs.
    i5 760 @ 2,8 GHz
    msi gtx 970
    8gb DDR3 RAM

    Windows 8.1 64 bit
Hope someone can help me out.

My current 780Ti is getting bottleneck by the CPU I have.. so even worse would be if I'd have 970 or 980..
That's because yours is the T version. It's not even nearly as good as the normal 4670 or K version.
Actually, it the lowest of the versions. Even S version would be better.
With normal 4670 and 4670K you wouldn't be getting bottleneck.
    Quote from: lucas-1996 on 09-February-15, 22:07:05
I have one more question. I cant really decide if I shall get the i5-4690k for my new motherboard or the i7-4790k. Is the i7 worth the 100 euro extra? I dont do things like photoshop, maybe a bit of streaming though.
What kind of cooling you have currently, or are you using stock cooler?
If you don't have sufficient cooler or are running stock cooler, you will need to invest on better cooling.
In which case, get the i5 4670K and buy a new, better cooler with that 100$.
I would recommend at least Hydro H80i if you have a free 120mm fan slot in the case.
If not, get the BeQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 or similar.

  • GTX 970 Causes APP 8.1 Instability

Good news: Upgrading from a GTS 450 to the GTX 970 allowed to view smooth playback on my 6k Dragon footage on the APP timeline.
Bad news: APP seems to want to crash a lot now, and my system flickers sometimes then goes to black and I have to cold reboot.
Did I get a bad card? Running the very latest vid drivers.
    System on Win 8.1
    i7 3770 3.9Ghz
    32 GB DD3 RAM
    Asrock MB
Disk system ~800 MB/s Sequential Read on separate SSD and SATA RAID 0 arrays

The problem seems to happen even in a new project with a basic time-lapse JPEG sequence. APP crashes. Also Photoshop crashes when opening DNGs in PS from LR. This didn't happen with my previous card.
Had downloaded the latest drivers. Even re-installed them and chose the "clean all previous installations" option.
Take the card back? Maybe this is a good excuse to get the 980 anyway. Only problem is everyone seems to be sold out of 970s and 980s, the only available was the 970 in a EVGA flavor that was reviewed poorly relative to other vendor implementations.

  • GTX 970 Fan Issue Part Two

    Hello,
i am new to the forum but i followed the first threat every day since my MSI 970 GTX Card has the issue with the fans (one is at 100% and one does not move)
I found that the threat is closed, i think that this is a shame.  I want to quote:
    "Nichrome"
    Enough of flaming on MSI
    >>Please read and comply with the Forum Rules.<<
If you have an issue mentioned in this topic with your 970 or 980, RMA it. (My word, RMA is a simple way, who pays me as i cannot use the pc in this time ??)
If you can't understand that MSI is unable (or was) to reproduce the issue, then we can't do anything about it. Also note that MSI has lots of different things to do, not just fixing 970 fan issue.
Any updates will be posted by Mods/Admins here.----End of quote."
WOW !!!!  MSI has a lot different things to do ?
And what, please ? The GTX970 is as new as a card could be. And MSI has different things to do as fixing errors ? WHAT ????????????? WHAT HAS MSI TO DO ???
I think you must be kidding. I am sorry that my first post is full of angry but if MSI has other things to do as fixing an error from a brand new product, what for the heck are these things ???? (fixing errors on a Geforce 8800 or else, oh yeah, that is really important !!)
I have contact with my reseller and i will get ( i hope still 2014 ) a new card, hopefully without errors.
But the statemant of MSI is, simple to say, not enough.

    Very upsetting?
Explain me one thing: how can you fix something if it's not broken? If they can't get the issue, then they can't investigate. Please stop behaving like you're 5 years old that don't understand a thing. Unless you are 5 years old, then it seems that your parents should speak to us or MSI instead of you.
That's not nice is it.  Yes he might be being a little melodramatic.  But to then insult him by calling him a child?  You should not be insulting people.  Whether this is a user to user forum or not, the forum uses the MSI brand which should encourage even more so a kinder approach to customers using the forum.  In my humble opinion of course.
Customers are unhappy.  It would be wise to note that the reaction of MSI, this forum, the fan troubles are all being widely discussed and documented all over the web.  MSI's reputation is not always being viewed in a good light.  Surely we should be trying to mindful and where possible improve that.
Also, the view that in some shape or form its the customers fault for buying hardware early isn't one I share, nor should it imo be viewed as acceptable.  I have always bought early release gpu's and never had any issue in the past 20 years from a hardware perspective.  I will freely admit that these 2 x 980's of mine are my very first purchases of MSI though.
I actually quite like my MSI 980's, though it is looking likely that they may require a vbios update to rectify the fan spin up issue being currently investigated by Nvidia.  It would have been nice to know that this was being investigated by MSI too.  Is that enough to put me off MSI again?  Not really.  But my perception of MSI has changed and think things could be handled better.
TL;DR  MSI could do better at maintaining customer relations.
