GTX 980 Gaming specs to compare 780 Ti Gaming

hello all MSI members
i just must come here and complain new nvidia 980 gtx Gaming card specs, bcoz i think thouse are poor.
if we check 780ti Gaming card specs and compare thouse 980 Gaming cards specs, different is big.
980 Gaming cards is oc'd too small,i think 1300 MHzis fine.980 Gaming oc'ed only for 1216 MHz,not so much.
780 Ti Gaming is excellent card, but i dont buy it bcoz i wait 980 Gaming card, but noe,i'm dissapointment
780Ti Gaming beat 980 Gaming cardl..
check urself ht1p://www.techpowerup.com and check MSI 780 Ti Gaming and GTX 980
make GTX 980 Gaming S,and higher clocks 1300/1415 was very nice.
now EVGA 980 SC is better clocked and i thnk about it.
well i still trust MSI and maybe update 980 Gaming new card cominh still and of coz 980 lightning, but
remembe, silence is VERY important.
all best all!

The reviews show a 40% power reduction on the cores at a only marginal increase in performance.
From the "Nvidia GTX980 review roundup - A generational leap in power efficiency" article
Quote
The 900 series cards have notably higher clock speeds than the GTX 780, and each CUDA core is 40% more efficient, which makes up for the smaller number of cores. The new Maxwell architecture is also dramatically more power efficient than Kepler—the 980 can deliver 30 gigaflops per watt, versus just 15 gigaflops per watt for the 680 and 780. That's allowed Nvidia to bring the card's thermal design point down to 195 watts, and to once again run off two 6-pin connectors.

  • MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming Twin Frozr - GPU_Z Speeds not right

I've just purchased the MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming Twin Frozr which is supposedly spec'ed at 1020mhz GPU clock from factory.
however, running GPU_z reveals that the GPU clock is 980 mhz only. seems like 40mhz less than stated in the product details?
what I did do is messed with MSI GamingApp and when i chose the "OC" setting it went to 1020 mhz.
    is this expected?
I was under the impression that it would be 1020 mhz as baseline without any sort of application tuning etc...
    thanks in advance.

The card works as it should. Just refer to the product site:
    Quote from: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/GTX-780Ti-GAMING-3G.html#overview
1020MHz Core (Boost Clock:1085MHz) (OC Mode)
980MHz Core (Boost Clock:1046MHz) (Gaming Mode)
876MHz Core (Boost Clock:928MHz) (Silent Mode)
     3072 GDDR5 7000MHz Memory
The baseclock of 1020 Mhz is only enabled using oc mode of the Gaming APP while the Gaming Mode is the normal clockrate it would run at even if not using the Gaming APP. Of course you could still oc with Afterburner while at OC mode and up the clockrate even further or you are just using an oc tool like Afterburner to adjust the clockrate completely manually.
The APP doesn't change any voltage settings. The voltage is determined by the gpu using Boost 2.0 (up to the maximum Nvidia boost voltage).

  • Connection MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G with 2560x1440 monitor

    Hi.
I'm going to buy WQHD (2560x1440) monitor. How to connect MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G to use 2560x1440 resolution? The specification for card states:
    DVI Connectors
    1 (Dual-link DVI-I)
    Max Resolution: 2048x1536 @60 Hz.
    HDMI Connectors
    1 (version 1.4a/2.0)
    Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @24 Hz (1.4a), 3840x2160 @60 Hz (2.0)
    DisplayPort
    3 (version 1.2)
    Max Resolution: 4096x2160 @60 Hz
I prefer connection over DVI but according to above spec I'm affraid if will be impossible...
I've heard the picture quality over HDMI/DisplayPort is worse then over DVI - is it right?

This cannot be possible Dual Link DVI is capable up to 2560x1600
I just purchased 2x 980s gaming and all the current cards only support DVI up to 1 (Dual-link DVI-I) Max Resolution: 2048x1536 @60 Hz.
This is incorrect unless MSI HQ R&D did not test 2560x1440 and 2560x1600 res or they put crappy components inside this card to not allow it.  I went back and fourth with owners on newegg with this card one owner did verify that it does work . For me I own a Monitor that only uses DVI dual link at 2560x1440. This will be a deal breaker for me if the cards do not work with my monitor or the video cards do not function correctly.
This does not make any sense what so ever for a manufacture to implement this standard as the majority of the population isnt even on 2560x1440 or 4k.  So i am pretty upset about how tech support fails to acknowledge the reasoning behind this new DVI standard .  Go look at the 760-780 series all say max res 2560x1600.
So my question to everyone out there who owns this card am i screwed or should i just use my dual link cable to run 2560x1440 even though it states 2048x1536 max res.  Someone that i know online says it works so whats the deal?
FYI this video card does support a max res of 2560x1600 over DVI
Tech support for MSI and Sales department were not trained correctly to let the customer understand that Max Resolution on the website for DVI 2048x1536 is for using the analog VGA adapter
Hope everyone now understands! Because this took me 4 hours of my time to figure out on my own with the help of Newegg tech support and verified owners!

  • VBIOS for my MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G request

    Hi,
May I request VBIOS for my MSI GTX 980 GAMING 4G S/N: 602-V317-03SB1409089224?
If possible please provide me with original NV317MH.111 that came with graphic card and the newest one.
PS. I upgraded NV317MH.111 to NV317MH.130 by means of MSI Live Update and now when using MSI Gaming APP to switch speed profiles, the GPU speed values shown in GPU-Z don't match the speeds for original Silent, Game and OC profiles for this card. What's wrong?

    nVidia drivers uninstalled.

  • 2nd GTX-980 Gaming 4G arrived for dual SLI

My secong 980 Gaing 4G arrived yesterday and my benchmarks are looking good: http://www.modsrigs.com/detail.aspx?BuildID=34135
My first 980 was hitting 1500 MHz with a +146 boost using MSI Afetrburner but this second board is holding it back. I had to back off my Primary board to +140 and kick my Secondary board to +160 to get them to run at 1476 Mhz. My first 980 went above and beyond advertised specs while the second 980 is running at exactly the advertised specs. My question: Is there away to flash the BIOS of my second board to get equal performance from both boards? Thanks for any replies. Yes, I know it's a dumb question.

    Quote from: Zuhl3156 on 19-April-15, 20:27:34
Better question: Will this boost the performance of both boards or lock it to advertised timings?
they will has the same clocks

I have never flashed a video board's BIOS except for when I used the 'Fan Unlocker' BIOS tool for my EVGA GTX-570 s/c boards. Do you have a tutorial listed any where on these forums? Is it safe to use this guide: http://www.trickmasterpc.com/
extract all files, then go to device manager and disable both GTX-980 Gaming 4G cards.
then right click on flash.cmd and select run as administrator
then answer with "Y" to all questions and wait flash to finish

  • Nvidia GTX 780 Ti or GTX 980 (AE CS6)

I'm building a pc to work with After Effects CS6. I do not know which is better between these two cards. The GTX 780 Ti has more cuda cores, 384bit, less clock speed. The GTX 980 has less CUDA cores, 256-bit, more clock speed, lower power consumption, and the new Maxwell.
Which card works best with AE CS6? And compatibility with AE CS6?
I would not want the GTX 980 is a good card for gaming and not for After Effects CS6, while the gtx 780 Ti is very good choice per work with CS6.
    Thanks.

After Effects uses the GPU for almost nothing.
If GFX cards don't make a difference, but you are considering exploring raytracing someday, with either Element 3D plugin or just built in AE raytracing. A Gaming card will benefit you massively. So you might as well go for it, then you at least have the option.
A lot of people will tell you that raytracing in after effects is not 'proper' raytracing. They would be right. But as E3D V2 is going to be basically realtime 'raytracing'. You will have the option to learn those principles in realtime. Then if you are interested enough to start doing 'proper' raytracing on better software. You'll know wtf you are doing, long before you are put off by how long everything takes at that level.
And hell if you don't explore it, at least your gaming experience will be AWESOME.

  • X99S GAMING 9 AC Not booting - Debug 94 code - Issue with GTX 980 SLI in WoW

Hello, I bought the X99S GAMING 9 AC motherboard but have ran into some issues.
The computer won't boot when I put my second MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4 GB card in the last PCEI 3.0 port (PCIE port 5) and I get the debug LED message 94 on the motherboard. I have a SLI setup.
The first card I have in the second PCIE 3.0 port due to the Noctua U14S CPU fan takes up space for the first slot. So I have been running my grafic cards in PCIE slot 2 and 4 with some issues.
First the card in slot 2 gets really warm over 86 celsius. And second: SLI runs really poorly in World of Warcraft. I get a lot higher performance with just one card activated. I am not sure if it's cause I am not running my cards in the recommended PCIE 3.0 ports or because WoW has some issues with SLI, but I heard other people have no issues at all with WoW in SLI.
I got the same issue with 3Dmark firestrike, the cards perform really poor in SLI. I get higher score with SLI turned off..
Though SLI seems to run pretty well in 3dmark 11 and Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls.
But the main issue right now, is that the computer won't boot with the grafic cards in PCIE port 2 and 5. The solution to run them next to each other is not good, cause it gets really hot and I get bad performance in WoW and Firestrike.
Picture of my setup before I switched places with the grafic cards as you can see, it is really tight:
Any upcoming bios updates (got v1.3) that will solve this issue on the horization? Hopefully this get sorted out really soon..
    My whole computer setup:
    Intel i7 5820K | MSI X99S Gaming 9 AC (bios 1.3) | SLI MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4GB | Samsung 850 Pro 512 GB | WD Red 4TB | G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3000MHz 4x4GB | EVGA SuperNOVA P2 1000W | Noctua NH-U14S PnP | Fractal Design Define XL R2 | 5 Noctua NF-A14 PWM 140mm fans | Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

You must use the recommended PCIE slots as the manual says for your CPU type, PCIE #1 and PCIE #4 if I remember, just open the manual :P for optimal 2Way SLI, also your 5820k will limit to 28 pcie lanes only if you plan to add more vgas...the other problem is your giant CPU air cooler blocking PCIE#1, do a favor to yourself, buy a watercooler for your 5820k and your problems are gone, add some overclock in your system, low noise and better temps.
Here I use 3x980 in SLI with X99S Gaming 9 AC, going soon to WC the VGAs with EK blocks.....3way is far more temperature critical than 2way spaced one.
    Cheers

After downloading the matching archive first uninstall the Nvidia driver (!) then simply decompress the archive and then execute the included batch file (182.bat in case of NV316MH.182's archive) in Windows by double clicking or via command prompt (must be run as administrator)

  • MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G: Fan issue, too

I build a new system that also includes a brand new MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G that I received today and to my considerable regret the graphics card is exhibiting fan issues similar to the ones some of you described with 970 cards.
My MSI 980 is spinning one fan at constantly high speed from the moment the system gets turned on. It's the fan on the inner half of the card, not the one on the slot side. My card came with the notorious sticker, which I removed with utmost care. The fan on the sticker/slot side is working perfectly fine, spinning up after launch, then spinning down for as long as the card's temperature is below 60°C, then spinning up again when it's above. Regulation works flawlessly for THIS fan - it can also be controlled manually by AfterBurner, which displays the speed of this fan correctly.
On the other hand, the inner fan does not regulate at all. It goes full throttle from the moment the system starts and never slows down again.
_Its impossible to stop or change the speed of this second fan through AfterBurner or NVidia Inspector._
Trying to make the other fan spin by poking it by hand, as some have described for their 970 cards doesn't change anything, either, since the other fan does run if the temperature neccessitates it.
So it doesn't look like the behaviour of the second fan is caused by something being wrong with the hardware of the first fan.
Anyway - at my wits' end, for now.
    My setup:
    MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G (Bios 84.04.1f.00.f6)
    NVidia Drivers 344.60
Monitor connected to DVI Port (through VGA adapter, for now)
    ASUS Z97-A (Bios v2012)
    Core i7-4790K
    Samsung SSD 850 Pro
    Windows 7 Pro SP1 x64

I tried with the MSI Fan Control tool (v2.0.0.1) that was on the included driver CD: It also has no influence over the second fan, only over the first (properly working) one.
I also checked my cabling and nothing seems bend or cricked. No heat-sink touching circuit boards. Guess I'll pull the plug on this one and move back to my 580 for the duration of the RMA process... I just hope the next one turns out alright.

  • MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming - Coil Whine

    Hi all,
I've bought 2 MSI GTX 780 ti 3G Gaming and I have the same problem with both : Unbearable coil whine in all game and with 3DMark.
I'm not the only one who have this problem but I don't know if the card is responsible.
Sometimes V-Sync reduce the noise but not completly.
    My config :
    MB : Asus Z87-Deluxe
Corsair HX-850 and now Corsair RM-850
    Intel I7-4770K
    Corsair Dominator Platinium (2x8Go)
If the third card do the same noise,  what can I do ? Take a 780 Ti somewhere else that to MSI ?
    Thank you for your answer.
    Mike

At the beginning, I had a Corsair HX-850, and I've changed it to a Corsair RM-850.
Next I have tried a lot of changes on 2 systems :
    1st Computer :
    - Thermaltake Overseer RX-I
    - Asus Z87-Deluxe
    - Intel I7-4770K
    - Corsair Dominator Platinium (2x8Go at 2400)
    => With Corsair HX-850 + MSI 580 Lightning : No CW
    => With Corsair RM-850 + MSI 580 Lightning : No CW
    => With Corsair HX-850 + MSI 780 Ti : CW
    => With Corsair RM-850 + MSI 780 Ti : CW
    2nd Computer :
    - Thermaltake V9 BlackX Edition
    - Asus P8P67-Deluxe
    - Intel I7-2600K
    - Corsair Vengeance (2x4Go at 1600)
    => With Corsair HX-750 + MSI 580 Lightning : No CW
    => With Corsair HX-750 + MSI 780 Ti : CW
It seems that the Coil Whine is folowing the MSI 780 Ti. Perhaps I have to buy another MB like a MSI Z87... and after another CPU, and change my PLEXTOR PX-256M5Pro... and what ??? I shall like having enough money to spend to be your MSI beta tester...
The MSI GTX 780 TI Gaming is the best card that I've seen for a long time, and I want to understand why I have some trouble with it.
If you want to send me another 780 Ti, I'll try it with pleasure !

  • GTX 980 Gaming 4G backplate available?

I am interested in a backplate for my MSI GTX-980 Gaming 4G. Is one available? I have searched and come up empty using Google. My 980 appears to use the same circuit board as EVGA's 980 Classified. Would that backplate work if MSI doesn't offer one?
    http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=100-BP-2987-B9

hi, Not sure if it's still relevant but there is one option I found
    www(dot)vonetech(dot)com /shop/backplates/msi-dragon-backplates/#reviews
the link is weird but you cant miss, its the one with the dragon. I bought it and wrote a review on the page, its not yet been approved so ill copy paste it here.
buying experience: they first lost my order due to server switching, but that was just bad timing and shouldn’t be an issue for anyone else. shipping to canada(montreal) took 8days with standard shipping wich is pretty good.
the product: Altough it isn’t as solid as most other backplates, it is the only option for this GPU that im aware of right now. It is plastic, one full piece for the desing color, and then a second layer for the back color.
The magnet system is decent and maybe necessary since its platic and piercing holes into it might not be feasible. there are no instructions but you can easily figure it out.
The problem with the magnet system is that it leaves a pretty big gap between the pcb and the backplate itself.
overall if There was other options like metal/screw-in backplates I would go with those, but this still does the job fairly well. here are some picture of what you can expect.
    s297(dot)photobucket(dot)com /user/billsk8/slideshow/V1%20tech%20back%20plate
    end.
honestly if you really need one, this will work but if you can wait for something better then I'd probably do that
