GTX580 Twin Frozr II OC: Crashing while gaming

I have a GTX 580 Twin Frozr II OC. My computer crash randomly while gaming. The screen turns black and the computer restarts.  It happens on different games. I have the latest bios on my motherboard and video card (70.10.17.00.01). I have also tried many different drivers. Currently I have the latest installed (320.49).
I have tried decreasing the core clock from 800 to 772 and increasing the Core voltage from 1025, 1038 and 1050, as well as different combinations of those.
Config:
Core i5 2500K @ 4.4Ghz
Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB @ 1600Mhz, 2 DIMMS (1.65V, 9/9/9/27)
ASRock Fatal1ty P67 Professional
Corsair HX 850W
GTX580 Twin Frozr II OC
2TB WD Black Caviar
Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Single Monitor
The S/N is 602-V255-01SB1102013982.
This is my bios http:// www .mediafire.com/?o6p4wf0prxa6tv5
Thanks!

The card came overclocked from factory. I decreased the clocks to the Nvidia default. The core clock to 772, Shader clock to 1544 and Memory clock to 2004. I also increased the core voltage to 1038.
The idle temperature is 38 C and at full load it goes to 82 C maximum.
Still, with all this, it still crashes now and then, but much less frequently.

nope its not dangerous, but that's extra OC with your current clocks.
Flash to the BIOS which i pointed, then it should works without vcore boost

  • GTX580 Twin Frozr II OC : Display driver crashing in DX11

I have two GTX 580 Twin Frozr II OC in SLI. nvlddmkm.sys seems to crash and restart after about 10 -15 mins on gameplay on DX11 games (I have seen it happen in F.E.A.R. 3 and Crysis 2 DX11). I have not had any issues with other games (I haven't played any other DX11 games), and surprisingly, it hasn't occured on Heaven benchmark (DX11) either, for some reason.

The BIOS for the cards is up-to-date, so are all drivers.
The voltage for both the cards was 1025mV. I upped the voltage to 1050mV (using Afterburner) and I haven't had any issues since (played Crysis 2 DX11 for a couple of hours). Could that have been the issue? If so, how do I permanently set the voltage to that value? And why am I having to do this in the first place?
    Thanks!

Also, do you know how to flash a new BIOS with different default values? I rather not have to set Afterburner to autostartup...
    - download NiBiTor v6.0 or above
    - save your bios by GPU-Z
    - open saved bios in NiBiTor and go to Tools/Fermi Voltage
    - change voltages Setting 2 and 3:0 from 1,0250 to 1,0500
    - change voltages Setting 2 and 3:1 from 1,0750 to 1,0880
    - klick Apply
    - save bios named gtx580.rom
    - than you must flash this bios on the card, you need bootable usb disk - try GOOGLE
    - if you have bootable usb and have copied right files for nvflash, restart pc, and get to boot from usb
    - in DOS mode write these commands: nvflash --protectoff for unlock security before flashing and the second command is nvflash gtx580.rom (name of saved bios)
    - watch in progress and at the succeed end, restart PC
    - finally in windows, reinstall driver for card
Hope this manual was helpfully for you. Sorry for my english

    and now my problem...
my stock clocks for this card are 800/600 / 2048 with 1,38mV and with these clocks graphic card is very unstable... BF3 crashes, crysis 2 crashes... so ive played a little bit with clocks and found it stable when i dowclock memory at 1900, at least i thought its stable (it was "stable" for bf3, it would crash but not as often as before). but, recently ive started to play crysis 2 and after 15 min or so it would crash to desktop with "crysis2 is not responding" message.. so ive reset my clocks to the default ones but added more juice.. didnt help. so ive flashed new vbios. didnt help. note: bf3 is running well (for now)
i dont know what to do? where is the problem? is it in the game itself or? i need someone to direct me as my pc knowledge is "low level"... thanks in advance

yes, in afterburner ive tweaked clocks and it seems that that was the issue... since i didnt have any crashes. why is that, i dont know... i hope that you could tell me... seems like memory is quite unstable on this card.
as i said, are there any drawbacks or impact on perfomance with these settings?
Memory clocks isn't performance related,[the core clock it is] it will makes close to 0 difference in speed.

i dont mind my card is downclocked a bit i just want it stable... today il try to test it with 3dmark11 as i really dont have time to play games for a couple of hours just to see if it works... so, my question is, just to make sure : if it passes with no errors (3dmark11) is this then considered to be a stable clock?
No, testing with 3dmark11 is not enough.

    Hi,
I need to verify if the graphic card that is in my computer is really MSI GTX580 Twin Frozr 2, and not GTX560 or GTX570 (to check if i wasn't cheated...). I cannot identify it from the others twin frozr 2 cards since it has same cooling system and no distinct markings anywhere on the card, or at least i dont know about them. Computer still isn't functional, but will be later on today. I didnt receive card in package, but already installed in miditower case.
So plz i need fast answer, if there is any visual identification i can do, or software that i can use later today to see what graphic card it is.

    tell S/N of your card

  • MSI GTX580 Twin Frozr II too hot?

    Hi
Just purchased an MSI GTX580 Twin Frozr II (800 mhz clock). Noticed the temps seem rather higher than what I expected. With case open, Idle temps are around 42C but running (45C case closed) (ambient temp is about 18-19C) Witcher II the load temps were getting up to 88C (95C with case closed and fans at 85%). This was after about 15mins. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the load temps with case closed (95C) are getting rather close to the chips max 97C where it starts to down-clock. So, is my Card faulty?
    Steve

    Hi,
Just a quick update. Did some experiments last night. Laid the computer on its side and held a 120mm fan directly over the video card. Idle temps went down to 36C from 42C. I then ran furmark at 1920 by 1200 res extreme burn-in. Temps never got higher than 81C. Do these temps seem normal or are they still higher than what they should be? The heat sink on the video card gets extremely hot to touch at load, so plenty of heat is being transfered. The case, by-the-way, is a Lian-Li V1000 plus which has the motherboard placed in an upside-down config, so that the video card is at the top and processor below. This it got me thinking that air is getting trapped at the top and the venting fan isn't strong enough to pull the hot air out quick enough.

  • GTX580 Twin Frozr ii oc

Have been reading the comments from SVEt re GTX580 issues. I have been having the same crashes. BFE/Origin and Steam  ARMA. MSI Live update advises no updates are available for Video BIOS and reports my driver is  70.10.20.00.01.  I purchased and installed a new MSI twin frozr [[/oc for my sons computer.. Live update advises his Video BIOS as 70.10.49.00.03..  The only differences in systems are that I run two cards in SLI.. Disabling SLI made no difference to crashes on my computer yet my sons plays the game fine with no issues.. I read somwhere in a forum that the OC cards did have issues and that the latest BIOS adjusted the core voltage settings..  If I change my settings as per 1050 do you think this will fix my issue with crashes as advised to another member with similar problems or should I donate and buy the software for Video Bios update??

Because based on your results, seems kombuster only used one of the cards while testing.
Not all 3D applications supports SLI.
I remember for kombuster there was a separated shortcut [multi gpu support] in some versions.
Other possibility is that the wrong SLI mode is used for kombuster.
you can try change SLI mode from Nv control panel to AFR2 and retest

  • MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II Random Crashes

    Hello,
I have had an MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II video card for the past year, and it has been operating without problems for most of that time. I have been slowly upgrading my computer over past 5 years, but keeping the same motherboard and CPU. A few months ago I started having issues with it:
While playing video games or browsing the internet the video drivers crash and recover after a few seconds at random times, approximately once every half an hour. 30% of the time, the card crashes and doesn't recover at all, with a black screen, prompting a restart of the system.
Last month I have rebuilt my PC: kept the same the video card, 750W power supply (both 1 year old) and all my hard drives. I reinstalled the same version of Windows 7. I made sure to take precautions against static in the process. However the problem persists.
Because I have my power button set to a restart, I am able to have the computer perform a soft reboot every time when the screen goes black, rather than forcing a hard reset, so to me this means the new CPU, Motherboard and RAM are working OK. Also on occasion switching my monitor cable between the two DVI outputs brings the image back.
Here are some of the other things I have tried so far unsuccessfully:
Updating the motherboard and bios drivers to the latest version
Using a tool to delete and reinstall latest ATI drivers (12.9)
    Using ATI beta drivers (12.11b)
Using both windows and 3rd party memory check tools (both came back OK)
Changing RAM settings from 1600 to 1333.
Underclocking the video card (although it runs pretty cold and I have a dedicated fan installed right underneath it).
I will welcome any other suggestions.
    Thank you in advance,

Here is an update on my situation:
I went out a bought a new PSU, Antec HCG-620M, but the problem didn't go away. I'm still trying to keep up with the latest drivers. However most games that require high performance (i.e. Witcher 2 out of the older, more stable games) remain unplayable due to fairly regular random video card crashes. Older games with lower specs play fine though. I have also been running SpeedFan in the background and have seen an occasional spikes in the video card's operating temperatures (as high as 81C) but crashes occur at any temperature.
    Help would still be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • N570GTX Twin Frozr II/OC crashing computer

Hi, I have a N570GTX Twin Frozr II/OC constantly crashing my computer when gaming. (Shogun 2, SR3...)
I have Upgraded the bios to 2.22 and cleaned the fans/heat spreader from dust.
The gpu-temp is below 70C when the card crashes so I don't think there is a heat problem.
The computer can run prime95 without problems and with another graphics card the computer seems stable.
Is there any known problems with this card? Volt too low or something like that? Any new bios?
Computer specs: Everything running at default clock.
Mobo: ASUS P8P67 PRO, BIOS 3207
    CPU: Intel i5-2500K
Memory: 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance memory 1600Mhz
PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W 80+ Gold

I have tried the card in two different machines and with numerous versions of drivers from Nvidia. Right now I'm using 301.24 BETA drivers but the drivers doesn't seem to matter.
I have tried to run with the fan at 70%, GPU temp around 50C still crashes.
So the board is just broken. Didn't last a year.

  • GTX580 Twin Frozr II OC BIOS File Help Please

Hii guys!  I just got my GTX 580 Twin Frozr II OC installed today and I'm really excited but I'm having a bit of a problem.
I've tried flashing the BIOS using the MSI HQ USB Flasher but the program says that the BIOS file I downloaded from the MSI website is not a valid file. Live Update 5 can't seem to detect my motherboard model or BIOS Version and, possibly, as a result does not find any updates for the card. Also, the MSI website mentions an EXE file that's supposed to be in the BIOS file archive, yet there is no EXE file in the archive.
I need to flash the BIOS (?) because my graphics card keeps crashing when playing games.  Most times: black screen, followed by the card reverting back to stock speeds. Twice, however, the screen got completely messed up and I had to hard reset the computer. That was when I set the voltage to 1150. And yes, even at stock speeds and the stock voltage (which is how I have the comp running atm), the card crashes.. just after a longer while. It's also not a heat problem because my in-game temps stay around 65ish.
I'm sure the rest of my computer is stable because most of the components have been replaced including the old PSU I had; to a Corsair TX 750W.
I feel like I'm missing something obvious, because flashing the GPU BIOS is new to me.
But, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot Svet! I was able to flash the BIOS without any problems, however I quickly returned to the old BIOS ROM because the graphics card was much more unstable with the "new" BIOS. (Which ironically also has a lower BIOS version number than the one that came with the card). Overclocking at all would really mess up the screen and at stock speeds (800, 1600, 2048) it would crash. I reinstalled Windows (went from 7 Home Premium x64 to 7 Ultimate x64) because it got messed up during some installations I was doing and now... everything's running like butter. :\
After booting it up, I reinstalled all my games and every single one of them runs fine. I still get some really bad FPS in Splinter Cell Conviction, which is upsetting because I was looking forward to maxing it out and playing it at 60.. but whatevs.
I've tested the card also using
Assassin's Creed (From 1 to Revelations)
    Battlefield 3
    Dragon Age 2
    Deus Ex: Human Revolution
    Crysis 2
    Saints Row The Third
    NFS Run,
    and Arkham City.
The card has a lot of trouble playing Arkham City with Physx on or with any of the DX11 features and I'm surprised I'm getting poor FPS at all in some games because I'm actually only using a 1600x900 display. I'm not complaining because all the other games run maxed out pretty well; and the card seems stable. I was also able to overclock it, which was tricky until I decided not to overclock the memory - so that the Afterburner values are 1150 (voltage), 900, 1800, 2048, 85 (fan). It looks like if I overclock the memory at all the graphics card crashes. Was a tad disturbing as I read that others have gotten better overclocks but... again, the important thing is that it's stable and running well. But, out of curiosity, why can't it overclock higher like others have managed to get it to?
    Two questions though:
I'm using Nvidia's 290.36 Beta drivers - is that okay? Or should I only use the drivers from MSI's site?
(To note, I've used all of Nvidia's drivers and they all appear to deliver the same performance across all games. By "all drivers" I mean the 280.26, 285.62, 285.79, as well as the 290.36.)
How long is the standard warranty on this card?
Again, thanks Svet for pointing me in the right direction.  :D
I'm even more excited now for SW: The Old Republic.
Aphax my GPU's serial number is "602-V255-060B1107208512" - why do you ask though?

@SVet, I can do that if I get any issue. Just installed the card on a new machine and was thinking preventitive. I had heard that the N580GTX/OC had stabilitiy issues that required bios upgrades. Before I start crashing my machine, I was hoping to just go with a bios change that has worked for someone else.
It can't be used as each VGA is unique and require custom attention if issue occur.
