GTX980 gaming afterburner vs msi fan controller.

I noticed that the first fan are under the control of the custom fan profile from afterburner but the second one are under the control of the bios. Is there any way to have in afterburner the possibility to applied a custom fan profile for that second fan ?

^ Lol, then why MSI put this feature on these cards including 980 Gaming ? If their software, afterburner, doesnt have an update to fix this issue ?!
Also, i know that one fan for 980 gaming is controlled by gpu temp, and the other fan by vrm temps.

You mean "VGA FAN Control utility"?
it should be compatible with SLI, but system will recognize them as one graphics card, so you set the fan speed, two of the SLI card will response the same speed.
The status of the card is from the second one and nothing about the first one. it will be good to have a drop down menu to switch between cards.

  • MSI fan controller and sli ?

I have 2 x MSI GTX980 Gaming SLI and I noticed that the fan controller gave me the status of the second card not the first one. How to get the info from the first card ?

In Fan Control it will only show one GPU temperature for your display video card. If you want both GPU temperature I think you can try download Afterburner. It will show both GPU temp.

  • Need tech help for MSI VGA Fan controller for gtx 780 SLI

Just curios how to get the VGA Fan controller to work on the 2nd card that's in SLI? I can get the 2 fans to run 100% with afterburner but the middle one wont on the 2nd card? Thanks!

    I have the same problem.
On GTX 780 Lightning, Afterburner will control both cards 90mm fans.  Afterburner will not control the middle fan (fan 2).
The MSI fan controller will only control one card, not both.  I think there was a major oversight here.  They either weren't thinking anyone would SLi GTX 780 Lightning when they made the fan controller or its horribly broken.  In my case Rakunvar, my bottom card (PCI-E slot 5) is controlled while the top card (PCI-E slot 2) is ignored.
I heard somewhere, they plan to fix Afterburner so it will correctly work with the 780 lightning.  It seems to me they put the MSI fan controller in the box with the GTX 780 Lightning because they must've known that the current beta Afterburner wouldn't control the middle fan.

  • GTX980 Gaming 4G

Hi, just bought that card and there are software with it called:
MSI Gaming APP and MSI Fan Control.
Now, if i wanna use the Afterburner instead, how do i make the same easy settings as the MSI Gaming APP gives me?
I dont know 100% what core settings it gives on each, but, it's more easy to use than the Afterburner, but, i'll be missing the log and ingame OSD i can have from Afterburner.
Can someone please help me with how to set Afterburner to same 3 options?

    Hi
Here are the clocks of the card:
    Boost Clock / Base Clock
    1317 MHz / 1216 MHz (OC Mode)
    1291 MHz / 1190 MHz (Gaming Mode)
    1216 MHz / 1127 MHz (Silent Mode)
Where Gaming Mode is default (Afterburner would show +0 on GPU Clock).
To get Silent mode, simply put -63 on GPU clock and there you have Silent clocks (roughly).
OC Mode, do +26 and should be OK too (and behave as OC Mode).
So from my calculations (using Base Clocks shown on the specification of the card):
    OC Mode +26
    Default/Gaming mode +0
    Silent Mode -63
This is only theorotical calculations. If you want exact numbers..
    Use Gaming App first:
Gaming Mode -> GPUz + Afterburner screenshot while idle (make sure to CLOSE everything that might use GPU). Then screenshot while load.
Silent Mode -> Same as above: idle+load screenshot from afterburner+gpuz.
OC Mode ->Same as above. Make sure to name each screenshot so you know what was used *Gaming App or Manual with Afterburner?*
Then set Gaming Mode in Gaming App, uninstall it and use Afterburner.
Obviously default (Gaming Mode) should be +0 and show same/very close numbers to what was shown with Gaming App on Gaming Mode
Silent Mode: put -63 and take screenshot while idle. Then put to load. If numbers are higher than with Gaming App, put -65 (depending how far away it is from same number) or other way around.
OC Mode: do the same, but instead of -, do +.
    Hope that helps

  • GTX980 SLI fan vs fan controller info.

I received my GTX980 Gaming 4G (2). I use the fan controller software but i wonder how to adjust the fan speed of each individually when i am in SLI ? So far so good. The cards gave me more performance then the EVGA GTX780TI. The cooling are better compare to EVGA cooling solution. A Happy guy
note : I pull off that sticker on the fan upward and peoples have to be careful of not pushing on the fan when you peel off that sticker or you will break the fan mechanic.

I've also just received my GTX980 gaming 4G (also in SLI). Freaking amazing!!
The only problem that I have with one of my cards is the MOSFT fan on that card does not shutdown when all the other do. PSTLOUIS, does all your fans turn off, once you have booted into windows?
NOTE: I have tested the card in which both fans turn off and it works on it's own. When I test the second card, I've noticed that the fans still doesn't shut/turn off.

  • Crash by gaming with MSI z97 Gaming 9 AC/ MSI 980GTX

    Dear MSI Form
The last couple of weeks I have a very bad crash,
    This is my system:
    Windows 8.1 64
Mother board: MSI Z97 Gaming 9 AC
    GPU: MSI GTX 980
    CPU: Intel core i7 4790K 4 GHz
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 240M
Memory: 16GB 4x4 Corsair vengeance pro
    Hard disk: 2 X 1TB 1 X 1TB SSD
Power supply: Be quiet! Power Zone 650W
Case: Cooler Master CM Storm Trooper Window
Fans: 9X Be quiet! Shadow wings + Fan controller
I use my pc mostly for gaming,
I bought en build my pc on September 2015 but now and then I get a very bad crash, the crash shuts down my pc (no blue screen / no Error) just a black screen with a pc that won’t respond on anything. The lights are on at my motherboard cpu cooler and GPU, but no respond. To turn my pc on again I have to shut down the main power switch. After 10 seconds I can start up my pc again.
I get the following windows event: id 41 kernel power
    Scenario:
This began when I played Dragon age 3 in December, I got the crash twice in like 100 hours. (not a big deal) than I got the same crash once when I played GTA V with 60 hours more or less. But now when I playing the Witcher 3 wild hunt I get it every 5 minutes.
What did I try to fix it but won’t work:
    - Memtest run x10 no error
    - Drivers up to date
    - The temps under full load are great CPU they won’t go over 51 degrease / GPU 68 degrees / the rest won’t go over 45 degrees.
    - I got no virus.
    - Everything is connected just fine.
I hope you guys can help me out.
    Kind regards,
    Tijs Dragtsma from the Netherlands

May be your PSU being too weak or going bad (I doubt though). Although you have 9 fans.. maybe try disconnecting case fans and leave only CPU cooler ones to work?

  • CPU Fan controller / Noisy CPU Fan

    Hi All.
I have the GD65 and the FX 8120 and the CPU fan is a bit noise( ~5750 RPM ).
Is there a smart/PWM CPU fan controller in the bios ?
The end goal is to only have the CPU fan get noisy when under load and not all the time.
    Thanks in advance.

Quote from: Bernhard on 30-September-12, 13:50:46
i.e. set you target temp to 40C and a minimum fan speed of 25%. That means your fan will run at 25% of its max rated speed until the CPU temp is at 40C, at which stage it will start spinning up to higher speeds.
The bios is the new fancy GUI and mouse one.
I found a a setting that seams to match your description: "Main->Hardware Monitor->CPU smart fan controller" and that then showed a setting called "CPU min.fan speed()"(looks like a function call to me).
I set the "CPU smart fan target" to 40C and the "CPU mun.fan speed()" to 50%.
So now would that mean that the CPU fan will spin at a minimum of 50% at 40C and slower when when less then 40C ?

  • Fan controller question

This is probably a quick and stupid question, I am running some vantec 80mm tornadoes which are a bit loud. Well actually if you can imagine a boeing 737's engines powering up you know how load these fans are. Seriously though they are about 71 Dcb. So I would like to control their rpm depending on my needs. My question is, can the K7N2-ILSR only support two fans directly off the motherboard (the nb fan and cpu). And I have to buy a fan controller right? Or is there another way I am not aware of.
Im sure some people will tell me I shouldnt have bought these fans, but they really do push a lot of air,
    Thanks everyone

I have a CoolerMaster Aerogate II control box.
It looks neat, it monitors temperatures of 4 devices and you can run your fans to it and control the speeds with a dial, as longs as the fan supports speed control.
The temps are accurate, while I'm in the bios screen I saw that the Aerogate was reporting the exact same CPU temperature as the bios was, but Aerogate was refreshing faster.  (it's a real time).  I have the Aerogate's diode run underneath the heatsink, right next to the CPU die.
The Aerogate has a LED screen that's blue, and the devices are selected through "channel switches."
The Aerogate cost 45 dollars (USD).
    It's my new favorite toy.

  • MSI GTX980 Gaming 4G Fan issue

    Hi all.
I read the thread about the GTX970 fan issue. I have the same issue on a brand new GTX980. First fan does not spin, while second fan is running at 90%. I saw the post about the sticker causing the issue. There was a sticker on my GTX980 which was removed carefully.
However, when I launch the MSI VGA Fan Control app it tells me they are at 0%/90% and they are set to auto. If I change this to 30%/30% the first fan immediately kicks on and they run together (although I can tell no audible difference).
Any thoughts? I do not have to manually touch the fan and when I set the fan app back to auto the 2nd fan is right back at 90%. I do not mind some fan action while playing but 90% fan 24/7 is not an option.
Best to RMA it or what? I have tried all sorts of things, it appears that the Afterburner app does not see the 2nd fan. When gaming the 1st fan kicks in like it should and runs at about 50%.
    Thanks.

I RMA'd the card and will be looking at different manufacturers now.
Ok, as no MSI card is in question anymore:

  • MSI GTX980 Gaming sometimes not recognized by MSI Z97 Gaming 9 AC

I have been experiencing a very odd problem with my new hardware.
    Hardware
Motherboard: MSI Z97 Gaming 9 AC
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4790
    CPU-cooler: Scythe Mugen 4
    RAM: G.Skill RipjawsZ F3-17000CL9Q-16GBZH
Videocard: MSI GeForce GTX 980 4GB GAMING 4G
    PSU: Seasonic X-660 80+ Gold
    SSD: Crucial M550 2,5" 1TB
    Monitor#1: LG 34UM95-P
    Monitor #2: Eizo Foris FG2421
    OS: Windows 7 Professional
    Issue description
The thing is that with 2 monitors connected the videocard is not recognized on a cold boot, but boots perfectly most of the time after a restart. In some cases a restart doesn't do the trick. I have even seen a couple of times that the monitor shows that windows starts and then the monitor loses the signal from the videocard before I can see the desktop (rare). With just 1 monitor attached the videocard is recognized. Als the IGP works fine, it's just the videocard that doesn't seem to be recognized when 2 monitors are connected (all combinations of DP, HDMI and DVI). When the computer has booted after one or more restarts and the videocard is recognized the computer works flawlessly, no problems whatever I do with it (desktop work, stressing hardware, playing games, etc.). Not a single sign of instability.
It's just the cold boot and sometimes the soft boot or restart that causes the videocard to not being recognized with 2 monitors connected.
What makes it really weird to me is that when the computer goes into sleep mode I can wake it up normally within say 10 minutes. But if I wait for let's say an hour the videocard is not transmitting a signal through the videocard.
When IGP is enabled the computer boots and windows loads normally (I hear the sound of the Windows login), although the monitors stay black when connected to the videocard. Then switching the connectors from the videocard to the motherboard shows me a normal Windows login screen, but the videocard is not visible in the device list. When the IGP is disabled to bootup sequence just hangs until a restart works and the computer boots normally with the videocard getting recognized and working properly.
    Click sounds
I noticed the motherboard makes 4 click sounds when booting, like relays flipping. I think it has to to with distributing power to al the components, since it looks like components respond to the click by turning led lights on. But I have to say I've never come across a motherboard before that makes click sounds. Is this normal?
    Tried fixes
    - Replaced the RAM with 100% working RAM from my other computer (Corsair Vengeance LP CML8GX3M2A1600C9) -> problem persists
    - Disabed XMP -> problem persists
    - Replaced the PSU with another one (Cooler Master V550 Semi-Modular) -> problem persists
    - Reinstalled the videocard physically -> problem persists
    - Tried several combinations of connecting the 2 monitors to the videocard (all DP ports, HDMI and DVI) -> problem persists
    - Replaced the videocard with a MSI GTX970 Gaming (connected with 1xDP and 1xHDMI) -> problem persists
    Conclusions so far
The cause can be found in the videocard or motherboard (probably BIOS issue).
Who can shed some light on this issue?

    Quote from: JLio01 on 14-November-14, 17:02:39
Try all PCIE slots no luck? Does the black screen always happen on one certain monitor or both?
I tried both the first and the second PCIe slot. No difference except for the fact that in the second slot the card only works at x8 bandwidth.

BTW - Did anybody try to remove the wifi module from the board and then test?
I didn't install the wifi module in the first place.
    UPDATE
I returned the motherboard to the webshop I bought it from and sent my cpu, ram, psu and videocard (GTX980) with it so they could test it. They found out that the videocard is the problem. So now I have to send the videocard to the webshop it bought that from. However, I am suspecting that it's just a VBIOS problem and not some fault in the hardware itself. On the other hand, it would be very strange that MSI would release a videocard that cannot work with one of their own top motherboards, wouldn't it?

  • MSI GT60 Fan Controller?

I know there is a button to max out my fan but sometimes that's unnecessary. I was wondering if anyone was aware of a program where I could manually adjust the fan speeds for when things get a little too warm. I notice sometimes the fan will adjust itself, however, sometimes it doesn't adjust nearly high enough. The max fan creates a lot of noise that I don't mind too much, but it'd be nice to keep it quiet sometimes like when watching netflix.
    Appreciate any help, Thanks.

    Hi Clerity
MSI designs 1 single button named "Cooler Boost" to max the fan speed, it is great design when system under heavy loading, if you think it is too noisy after enable the " Cooler Boost" , the default cooling system will detect the system loading and adjust fan speed automatically, don't worry about the heat !! good luck @@
