Guassian Blur hanging up in PS CS5.1 on 1 year old Mac Pro

I am running Photoshop CS5.1 on a Mac Pro that is only about a year old (OS - Snow Leopard). The machine has 24GB of ram and I am devoting about 18GB of the ram to Photoshop. It doesn't matter how big the image is that I am working on but whenever I try to run a Guassian Blur on a layer mask, the dialog opens up and just starts the beach ball spinning. I then try to click on the slider or type in a value and it doesn't respond. After about 2-3 minutes of spinning beach ball, the slider jumps to 250 and starts acting real wonky - the slider moves with the cursor without even holding and clicking on top of the slider - almost like its stuck to the cursor. I've tried running in both 64-bit and 32-bit modes and the same behavior occurs. Anybody else experience this weird behavior?
Thanks,
Brian

Does turning off OpenGL in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

All of a sudden the screen on my 3+ year old macbook pro has blurred badly - I can hardly read the words - any ideas?

You likely didn't erase the ENTIRE drive of the later OS X operating system before installing Snow Leopard. You just targeted the Macintosh HD partition.
Try again, this time make sure to select the name and size of your boot drive at the top to catch the hidden EFI partition that's responsible for the splash screen at boot time (no screen = white)
It will take two reboots to reset the EFI again, so once Snow is installed and reboots, reboot again.

  • New Mac Pro and 9.2 Hangs on Adjustments?? Old G5 Doesn't

    Hello
I have what should be a very fast new Mac Pro.  6 core at 3.46Ghz.  48Gb of RAM.  Solid state boot drive.  Software RAID 0 with 2 Hitachi 3TB drives, hardly anything on them yet. Nvidea Quadro 4000 CUDA card.  Everything installed and burned in for the overnight 8 hour test with the MPG workstation program at OWC.  Lion 10.7.2.
I had approximately 700 in camera photos combined still in camera between an up-to-16MP Sony NEX 5N camera and up-to-24MP pics on a Sony A77, that have already been loaded into my 6-7 year old 2.4Ghz dual core G5 with 6.5Gb RAM and much older version of iPhoto. OS 10.4.7 I believe.
Last night I loaded all those same pictures into the new machine and 9.2 version iPhoto.  And then deleted them from the cards on both cameras.  No issues. Smoking fast imports compared to the G5 which wasn't all that bad.
On the G5 with the picture adjust controls I could use the slider to go deeply into those same photos and see the effects of contrast, sharpness and all the other options.  Like butter.  Make the adjustments while in that deep if desired and then pull back to evaluate the overall picture before saving.  Or back in again if desired. No issues.
With the new rig I couldn't wait to try all of this, but once I go deep inside and start to move the adjustment slider controls the system every time starts getting hung with the spinning wheel.   Have to wait and wait for them to catch up to the curser on that adjustment.  Most of the time the system then will just get stuck and I have to force iPhoto to quit.
Please....does anyone know why all this latest powerfull hardware and software is doing that, compared to the old, much less capable G5?  I am really concerned now.  Haven't had a chance to get Photoshop and the other production premium software tested yet.
And one last question please.  Does anyone know if the "Enhance" feature in the Quick Fixes section adjusts Gamma as well?  There seems to be a lot more going on to give the photos depth (what I always really try to do)   than the sum of the small slider movements in the Adjust section.  With my old system and iPhoto version there was no "Gamma" adjust slider in iPhoto proper......but if I saved a photo first to my Desktop for instance, and then called up the adjustment features, there was a Gamma slider there.  Very handy and appreciated.
I see similar vast improvements on some photos now with the "Enhance" feature that looks like maybe Gamma has been optimized as well?  There now is no Gamma slider available even if the photo is taken to the desktop first.
    Thanks much
    Ron

    Hello Terence
Thanks for the tip to try.  Couldn't get to it until late last night.  Seems to still be the same in Library 2.
Also seems to be worse with 27" Cinema Display at full resolution.  And with several sliders on adjustment.  If I drop the resolution to 1920 x 1080 or 1600 x 900 and move smoothly about it is not as apt to hang up.  With as much horsepower as the new Mac Pro has, should resolution of monitor be an issue in these adjustments deep into the pictures?
How about the Enhance button?  Is gamma involved?  Everything I read about it on searches only talks about boosting saturation of the color and fine tuning with little other slider adjustments.  But on a picture where it has made a big difference to the good with depth and overall look, if I look at where the sliders were adjusted and then undo the enhance, and go back and manually put the sliders in the same position it doesn't look the same.
Does anyone know if gamma is being adjusted with this button?  Sure seems like it but can't find it mentioned anywhere.
    Thanks again!

  • Installing CS5.5 on my new mac pro - what to do?

Over the years I've purchased CS3 (boxed), CS 5 Design Premium (boxed), and CS 5.5 Design Premium (downloaded upgrade). I am ready to install 5.5 on my new mac pro. Questions:
I had once copied some CS 5.5 dmg files to my backup drive but they appear to be only pdfs about installing, etc., not applications...so,
Do I need to install my boxed CS5 first or is my 5.5 the complete set even though purchased as an 'upgrade'? (I see there are complete, separate CS5 and CS5.5 folders on my old mac)
With the above info in mind, I have to re-download CS5.5 from Adobe, right? Thanks!

Simply install CS5.5 right away and it will ask for the previous serials for verification.

  • Graphics Card on Mac Pro for CS5

    Hi all,
I was just wondering if anybody is using Premiere Pro CS5 on one of the latest Mac Pros (4,1 dual quad core Intel Xeon 16GB RAM) with any of the Mercury engine supported NVidia cards? The Mac I have currently has the ATI Radeon HD 4870.
I know the GTX 285 is supported but I since read on one of the Adobe forums that Apple had discontinued it?? Is this correct? I can't seem to find it in stock anywhere.
Will I have to go up to the Quadro FX4800 which is over $2,000AUD?
Just trying to get some user experience from anyone in a similar situation/setup.
    Thanks for all help/knowledge,
    Alex Hawkins

....Apple switched from nVidia to ATI in the latest Mac Pro,...
Wonder what a conspiracy theorist would make of that.
Maybe Apple is feeling the heat of the Adobe blow torch on FCP

  • How do you blur an image in InDesign CS5.5 (wtihout Photoshop)?

I'd like to apply a guassian blur to an image in InDesign CS5.5, but I don't have acces to Photoshop or any other real graphics program on my employers Windows laptop.  Is there any feature in InDesign that would result in a guassian blur look?

    Something like this? http://indesignsecrets.com/branislavs-great-ghost-technique.php

  • Create new swatch using Guassian Blur

    Hello
I am trying to create a new swatch pattern that repeats consistently (see diagram below)
I create a assemble four (6pt by 6pt squares) together and then colour them in approproiately. I guassian blur at 1.5pt each square. I add a base colour background in a square of 12pt by 12pt and then put a 12pt by 12pt invisible bounding box behind all this. I then drag to the swatch panel to create my new swatch.
Problem is that when I try to colour in a larger square with this patter I get harsh lines ... see the example. Would love thoughts on how to get around this
    Thanks
    John

Nah, don't create the seams at the edges of the squares but more in a flower shape with one of the squares in the middle and the others surrounding it as ahlf squares.

  • Why is "guassian blur" the one and only filter when exporting?

In the export thing, there is a "filters" thing, and the only available thing is "guassian blur". There must be a reason for this. Why have filters at this point? And why guassian blur? Is this some kind of much-needed feature? To blur everything in the last moment? I don't get it. What's the purpose of that?
Also, a bonus question: wasn't today (17th) when you are supposed to be able to download the trials of the new CC apps?

    From the help file:
The Gaussian Blur effect softens the image and eliminates noise. Adobe Media Encoder applies the Gaussian Blur effect as a pre-encoding step. This step minimizes the noise that the encoder would otherwise have to encode. It results in quicker encoding and smaller output file sizes. Select the Output tab to preview the results of this effect.
My guess is that noisy video is usually fixed in the timeline, but maybe not?

  • Hanging indent, Adobe Fireworks CS5

Any idear how to do a "hanging indent" in Fireworks CS5 for a multi-line custom bulleted list.
Or if there is the "indent here" option in paragraph text for Fireworks CS5?
I can't believe it doesn't have such a simple type controls like this, but it's legacy code - so maybe brute force is the only way.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cheers,
    Jamie

Thanks for the quick reply Jim -
A single negative indent value doesn't quite give me enough control. At least not what I'm used to compared to the other Adobe apps. Uusually you spec a first line indent value and an indent value for the remaining lines in the paragraph. (ie 8, -8 pts, respectively)
OR an Indent-here command. (I know there's no such thing in HTML, but that's not my concern in designing protypes/mockups - and CSS does handle that quite plainly these days.)
I know the FireWorks isn't ideal application for typesetting, but considering it's been rev'd up several times since the MacroMedia acquisition, you'd think someone would have solved this basic integration issue by now. I doubt it's fixed in CS5.5 either...UGH.
Brute force typesetting here I come.

  • Mac Pro hangs on authentication

I have a Mac Pro dual-dual 3GHz which has a sporadic issue where (as far as I can tell) processes hang when authentication is attempted.
I haven't seen any rhyme or reason to when this occurs. Sometimes, I will be in the middle of working, and I will notice that Terminal hangs when I try to open a new window. Other times, it will occur after the machine has gone to sleep (it wakes up fine, but then attempting to log in will hang).
When this issue is occurring, all the following will hang:
    * Logging in via loginwindow
    * Switching users
    * Logging in via SSH
    * Performing sudo
    * Opening a new Terminal window
The problem doesn't always go away upon rebooting. Sometimes, I reboot and everything is normal; on other occasions, the login window will hang after I enter my username and password and click Log in, even after multiple reboots.
This problem has never occurred when rebooting in safe mode. However, often I can reboot in safe mode, log in, everything appears normal (for safe mode), but when I reboot in normal mode, the inability to authenticate occurs again.
When this problem is occurring, it occurs on all accounts.
Eventually, after enough reboots, I am able to log in and work normally (until the next time it happens).
Also, I have never noticed anything wrong with either CPU or memory usage when this problem is occurring.
On one occasion when this was happening, I happened to have an open root SSH session available. I ran sc_usage on securityd and found that it was waiting on 'machmsg_overwritetrap'. It waited over 5 minutes without anything further happening. I'm not sure what, if anything, this indicates. (Also, 'LASTPATHNAME_WAITEDFOR' was blank.)
    Any ideas would be welcome.

Corupted object.... I had this under 10.3.x..... had to wipe clean and reload OS X from CD.
I read in a post that you could boot in safe mode, and delete "something" (I do not remember now) where the authentification data is stored and then you re-create your users... search past posts.
My suggestion of a clean reload is a safer bet that you will have a clean system.

@I run a Windows 8.1 -  Photoshop CS5 under Parallels on an iMac one year old and both having the latest OS. I use a NIK plugin "VIVEZA" which run fine for years without a problem. Latelt and without a reason, the NIK plugin has gone corrupt, (can not use it more the 2 corrections after a get a black background message that there is not enough memory) and the system stops running and a must restart is required. How do I fix this terrible problem?
If it requires a Photoshop CS5 re-install, (I belief that it may fix the problem) and re-install the two third party plugins (NIK Viveza) and (Onone Perfect Resize) how and where do I get to the proper Adobe upload page to do that.
    I have tried to fix this problem by changing the memory allocations, I have spend many hours on it and are very disgusted with it but it needs to be fixed. The current memory settings are;
    Ram available = 1588 MB
    Range = 873 -1143 MB
Recommended Photoshop usage range =  857  however I have tried every setting to max and in between. Nothing works. Current setting = 1588 (max)
The Photoshop I use is registered, I have product # and order # .

Contact NIK for updated/upgraded versions of their plug-ins.  They have been having a lot of issues with their plug-ins.

  • How do I transfer CS5.5 from an old macbook pro to a new one via firewire?

My old MacBook Pro fried its graphics card and I need to transfer all of my data across to my new macBook Pro. I have everything backed up on a hard drive but when I try to open it it says that i can't because t is on a Time Machine Back-up. How do I get it to open? Do i need to get a new serial number? Not sure what to do from here.

You need to reinstall on your new MacBook Pro from your original media (if you purchased a DVD), or from the backup you made of the installation files.
You cannot successfully migrate CS5.5 using FireWire. That would not be successful. You can use the same serial number you had before. However, if you used all your two activations, you may have to Adobe to remove its listing of your old Mac so you don't lose one activation.

  • Mac Pro 1,1 hangs indefinately at startup: Help Me Diagnose?

Hello all, trying to determine what could possibly be causing this issue with my Mac Pro Quad 2.66 xeon machine running Snow Leopard.
It will turn on but does not boot up, instead hanging indefinately at the white screen with apple logo, displaying a perpetually rotating load icon.
Perhaps the pros can help me figure this out...
Here are what may be some relevant details:
-Will not boot to system install disk
-Does not take keyboard command for auto disc-boot (c on startup).
-DOES take keyboard command for boot disc switching on startup (option on startup).
Sees install disc via this method, but machine will not boot to it.
-Only very recently, machine turns on automatically when simply plugged in, without the need to press the power button
(this started last night after the machine has been off for days).
-There are no error LED lights anywhere, on the logic board nor on the RAM risers.
Here are some steps I've taken so far:
-Removed hard drives to attempt forceboot to install disc and rule out a system drive issue; no change in symptom.
-Set up various RAM configs to check for RAM problems: no RAM, one pair of each set on Riser A, swapping risers, etc; no change in symptom.
-Failure to boot to Install Disc with any button combo at startup suggested some sort of optical drive problem so
removed optical drive completely; no change in symptom.
I am baffled by this, and while it is an older machine with the 'known issue-laden' Nvdia GeForce 8800GT dual graphics card,
there are no graphic anomolies whatsoever. I have the Arctic Cooler S1 heatsink/fan system in there and so always been nice and cool.
Any ideas folks? This has brought my studio to a complete standstill
Thank you kindly for your input and happy friday to you!

By the way, Ive done the Verbose mode and there are, as you guys stated, mostly lines of information I cannot understand. However, some things that stuck out as possible negatives with words like 'failed' appeared,
perhaps these lines they will look like something to some of you...
Most notable were the final lines at the bottom of the verbose readout page,
(reads as such but on single line):
    launchctl: CFURLCreateDataAndPropertiesFromResource(/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.appl e.auditd.plist) failed: -10
immediately following was another launchctl line, seemingly related to the previous:
launchctl: no plist was returned for: /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.auditd.plist
then yet another launchctl line which read (all on one line):
launchctl: dubious permissions on file (skipping): /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.adobe.Switchboard.plist
    then this one:
launchctl: please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
The very last line on the verbose readout page reads:
Notice: new kext com.paceapp.kext.pacesupport.snowleapord, v5.7 matches prelinked kext but can't determine if executables are the same (no UUIDs)
Another thing that stuck out was a line after the details of launching and bootup sequences (simply details powerup, verbose startup etc.) but then this line appears afterword:
    Bug: Launchctl.c:3557 (23930):17: ioctl(s6, SIOCAIFADDR_IN6, &ifra6) ! = -1
at the very top of the readout, there are seven lines referring to 'processors', looks like this:
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 1 LocalApicId= 1: Enabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 2 LocalApicId= 7: Enabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 3 LocalApicId= 6: Enabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 4 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 5 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 6 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
    AppleACPICPU: Processor Id= 7 LocalApicId= 0: Disabled
There is a line about mid page that reads as such:
    BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2
anyway, not sure what any of it means but thanks again for reading and for all the advice.
    Best,

  • Upgrading Mac Pro 3,1 for CS5

We have 2 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 need to update to use Adobe CS5, and I think we may need some hardware/software upgrade to boost the performance and would like to have some suggestion. Here is the list of hardware:
      Model Name:          Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1
      Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz
      Number Of Processors:          2
      Total Number Of Cores:          8
L2 Cache (per processor):          12 MB
      Memory:          10 GB
      Bus Speed:          1.6 GHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MP31.006C.B05
      SMC Version (system):          1.25f4
    OS:
It is currently running 10.5, so the OS should need to upgrade to 10.6 for better security and stability and also feature. I would like to know if running Snow Leopard in native 64-bit kernel will benefit CS5?
    RAM:
Current the RAM is 1GBx6 + 2GBx2, so there is only 2 spare RAM slot left. Perhaps add to 2x4GB or 2x2GB depends on the budget.
    HDD:
Perhaps we will request if WD VelociRaptor or Intel SSD. Since the HDD are loading into the slot so the connector need to be in place. I think the VelociRaptor should able to slide into the slot by mounting to the HDD mount comes with the Mac Pro chassis, but seems most SSD are in 2.5" form factor, and the mount doesn't fit, any suggestion? Thanks.
    Graphic:
Will CS5 leverage the core image or core animation of OSX so a modern card with more memory will render thing faster? Which graphic card upgrade can this Mac Pro use?
Any hints will be appreciated, thank you!
