Guest account and auto log out

I will be using Snow Leopard machines in a computer lab with guest accounts. However, I've read that when the idle timer ticks over, the dialog box confirming the Guest account's files will be deleted comes up and does not time out (like a normal account would).
So the machines never auto log out. In an environment where most users don't log off to protect their privacy, this is an annoying problem.
Is this still an issue? Is there a way to turn off that dialog box confirming logout? Or some other way to get my Guests to auto log off?

it would actually be pretty easy to create a automator script that runs a bash script like "sudo exit" which would then prompt for the password of a admin.

Mac desktop freezing, crashing apps, and auto logging out

Yesterday my 27 inch mac running on OS X 10.9.3, late 2013 has started crashing every app I try to open and usually twitching out and logging me off. I've tried every user on the computer, all with the same result. I have also tried to reset the pvram and repair the disk, with no luck. I'm getting worried there is something really wrong with it, not sure if I should take it in to a store, or what. Also, I've booted in safe mode and it seems to work, however most of my apps/games won't run due to insufficient specs that I know I have. Very confused as to what caused this, since its pretty new and only 200 gbs of memory has been used out of 1000. Any suggestions are helpful! Thanks

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. 6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

How do i force a guest account to Auto log off after being inactive for a period of time?

I have a 2010 21" iMac running OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8) in a hotel's guest lounge. I want to have it log off of the guest account after being inactive for 5 mins so that it clears the session info if the last person who used it did not log off when they were done (***this happens very often***).
I tried using the "System Preferences > Security> Log off when inactive for X minutes" option but this brings up the "Delete files and log off" dialogue which unless someone makes a selection just stays there and doesn't timeout, essentially stopping the logoff process.
How can i bypass that dialogue and force the system to log off the Guest User to avoid any issues with other guest seeing info from the previous user?

I don't believe it's possible to do what you want, unless someone could write an Applescript for it. I suspect the best route for now is the old fashioned way, paper and marker, warning guests to log off or their info will be public.

hi mate, have you checked you are up to date with latest firmware and all latest Nokia system app updates from the Store? also try performing a soft reset and double checking that everything is ok with your Microsoft account online.

How do I keep myself active so I don't get auto-logged out?

My wife & I have a computer that we share with our young kids. They each have their own account with Parental Controls turned on and time limits and it all works well with one exception. When they run out of time, their programs (often resource-intensive Safari) stay open and using CPU and memory and making the computer run slowly. We want to try setting the Security preference to log out after X minutes of inactivity, but we don't want the account we use to be auto-logged out.
My thought was that maybe there is a simple piece of software that could do something every few minutes that would keep her account active. Thinking about it now, I'll bet there are a lot of users who have the opposite problem - they want to be logged out when they are inactive, but something is keeping them active!
Anyway, does anyone know of a simple program that will keep her active so she doesn't seem to be inactive even when she is so we can 'trick' the Mac into thinking she never goes inactive? Then we can set the preference to log out inactive users, thus fixing the problem of our kids' programs running even after they've used up their time for the day.
Or maybe there is another solution to this problem. Any thoughts?

Mac OS X is a multi-User system. Settings for Parental Controls are on a per-User basis.
Parental Controls do not apply to your Account, unless you set your account to have some Parental Controls as well.

I want to disable auto log-out

I have a Mac Air OS 10.9.5. Normally, when I it is either idle for a time or I close the computer, it goes into sleep mode (but it does NOT quit all applications and log out) and requires a password to use it again -- that's the way I want it.
But sometimes, it when it goes idle or I shut it, it logs out or there is a count-down to logging out that I need to cancel when I come back in. Although I DO want to have to key in my password, I don't want to have to log back in because when it logs out, it quits all my applications.
How do I retain the password function while disabling the auto-log-out function?

From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it and enter your login password when prompted.
Click the Advanced button and, in the sheet that opens, uncheck the box marked

Auto log out issue

Since upgrading to Maverick, my iMac has started to log out after about 15-20 minutes of inactivity. The energy settings are 1hr computer sleep and 10min display sleep. And I have tried both unchecking the auto log out in “Advanced” Security & Privacy, and checking the box and setting it to 360min. Also tried deleting a couple of the Library/Preferences files that have been suggested before.
The computer first goes to screen saver at 10min, it can be awakened to the desktop, but if you leave it inactive for 15-20 min it will first go to the screen saver, then log out after another 5-10 min to the login screen. The apps that were open will re-open when you log back in.

I would like to add to this issue, just noticed that even though the screen saver is now set to 15 min, the display goes to screen saver at ~5 min. The clock in the upper right corner shows the correct time.

I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month. It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone. Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word. The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer. It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have. The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up. If it pulls up at all. I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean. I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks. I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either. I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me. I do remember when I believe my computer became infected: I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected. I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late. I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all. I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer. It refuses to uninstall. The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible. If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,

Install ClamXav and run a scan with that. It should pick up any trojans.

You need to return it to the seller and get your money back. You cannot reset or use the device with another AppleID installed unless you know the password for that ID.
If the device has been jailbroken, no one on here can give you any further help...the Terms of Use prohibit us from doing so.

I show and old defunct email address for my Apple ID on my APP store, iCloud, and iTune accounts and cannot log in. I am told my ID or password is incorrect. I did change my primary email address. that is the app ID that is showing.

If you mean you are trying to delete your iCloud account in iOS 7 and you don't know the passwod for the old ID, do one of the following:
If you still have access to your old email address, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your iCloud ID. Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email account and verify it. Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address. You should then be able to turn off Find My iPhone with your password. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud). Next, go back and change your primary email address and iCloud ID back to the way it was. You will then be able to go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current ID and password to reconnect to your iCloud account.
If you don't have access to your old email address, you will have to contact Apple to get them to reset the password for it so you can disable Find My iPhone and sign into your iCloud account. You will have to prove your identity to them in order to do so. You can either contact iTunes support for assistance with this (https://ssl.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html), or contact Apple Support (http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/).

Guest account and screensaver

Hello,
We have some iMacs at a property in a public area (Library). Guest account is setup for use. I'd like to configure a background and screensaver using certain images for the guest account and not have these settings delete/undo upon guest account logout. Is this possible?

I come from a Windows background, just starting to learn about Macs. There is not a way to edit the default Guest profile (sent background image, screen saver, etc)? Or use scripts at login to make the changes?

Sorry, unless she backup up the new phone before or is using iCloud to save the photos, the photos are gone.

If you want to just remove the app, just place your finger on its icon on the screen untill it start to jiggle, then press the X next to it.
