Guest Anchor Controller DNS issues

Hi,
I have an anchor controller (4402) is running version 4.0.219.0 in our DMZ
The main service we use is a guest service which uses the anchor controller in the DMZ for access to the internet. Authentication is via the WEB re-direct feature. We currently have a subnet assigned to the Guest SSID with a 22 bit mask providing just over 1000 ip addresses to clients.
Change required (which were attemped).
1. Move the dhcp server to a dedicated dhcp server and off the anchor controller.
2. Increase the address space to /21 thereby providing about 2000 addresses for clients. (By changing the ip address mask on the SSID interface).
Problems
The provision of dhcp from the new dhcp server worked fine and clients were able to pick up dhcp addresses when they associated to the wireless SSID.
The problem was that only some clients were being re-directed to the web-redirect page for authentication. Any clients who were re-directed were able to authenticate correctly.
Diagnosis
It appears that only some client's dns requests were being passed on from the anchor controller. A capture of packets between the anchor controller and the DMZ firewall did not pick up dns packets from an assiocated and connected client even when running dns queries manually from the wireless client.
A reboot of the controller did not make any difference.
Is there any throttling effect on dns queries which may have being implemented on the anchor controller by default once the subnet mask was increased? I noticed authentication successes of about 1 a minute while normally we would see authentication rates of 1 every couple of seconds.
Are there any bugs or known reason why an interface mask of /21 would be problematic on the controller?
We had to roll back the changes to the original configuration in order to bring the service back on-line.

Hello Eoin
Where is the external dhcp server ? in the same DMZ or on the inside network ? we have a /19 subnet allocated to the guests and I dont foresee any throttling on the dns queries.. The connectivity anyway till the anchor controller is on EoIP, and is just like the client connecting onto a local controller..
laptops which had issues -> was the problem interim or its just that they are not able to get the web redirect page at all ?
Check the release notes for any bugs on this software:

  • Guest access to the Internet with Guest Anchor Controller

    Hi;
We are doing our initial implementation of an enterprise wireless system.  I deployed a WLC 5508 connected to our data center core switch using LAG.  The 5508 is configured in FlexConnect mode since it is serving APs deployed to a handful of remote offices.  Employee wireless access has been rolled out and is working well.
I am designing guest access.  As is typical, I want to enforce a policy that guest wireless traffic is forwarded to the Internet Edge in our DMZ and directed out to the Internet.  We do not plan to deploy a Guest Anchor controller in the first phase of the roll out.
What is the best way to enforce forwarding of guest traffic towards the Internet Edge once the guest traffic arrives at the 5508?  A guest VLAN between the core switch and the Internet Edge isn't feasible since there is a firewall between the core and DMZ that is configured in Routed mode.
Thanks for the assistance!  Glenn Morrison

you'd have to do a VLAN between the core and the firewall for the guest traffic until you get the anchor installed.

    Steve

  • Guest Anchor Controller

Cisco documentation recommends using a dedicated controller for the guest anchor controller function becuase it needs to be located in the DMZ. However, if I have spare capacity on an existing controller (ie one used to manage APs) then perhaps I can also use it as the guest anchor.  Instead of being physically connected to the DMZ, I would just extend a guest user VLAN from the guest anchor controller to the DMZ.  I would welcome feedback on the validity & security of this alternate solution.
    Thanks.

    Hi Marvin,
Like anything in networking, there are always different ways to skin a cat. First lets chat about the guest anchor deployment in the DMZ. This particular design is Ciscos most secure way to handle guest access. The wireless guest packet never touches your switch fabric until it hits the DMZ. The packet rides over the guest wifi, hits the ap, gets encapsulated and doesnt get unecapsulated until it hits the DMZ anchor.
Another way and less expensive is to add a dynmic interface on your internal controller and ride that trffic into the DMZ. I have customer that do this very thing as well. Its cheaper and may be less hassle configuration wise.
In this approch, your guest packet gets unwrppaed can placed at the door step of the WLC.
    I hope this helps.
    Does this make sense?

  • Sizing guest anchor controller

40 locations, around 20-30 APs per location, 1 gig back from each site to the main site, minimizing cost. Trying to size the guest anchor controller. Redundancy is not required. As I understand correctly 4402/4404/5508 controller supports up to around 70 EOP tunnels. My limitation is bandwidth. Is it safe to say that if Internet bandwidth is <100Mbps, then 4402 will suffice? Only if Internet bandwidth was above >1Gbps when I'd need to go to 4404 (bandwidth is used twice, so 1Gbps guest traffic would result at approximately 2Gbps throughput)

You could always port-channel a 4402 and use LAG on your anchor controller for 2gb.
I use a 4402-12 for our anchor's as the BW is adequate, and AP license count is not a factor for anchors.

  • WLC Guest portal - External DNS issue

I have an interesting behavior.  When my guest users attach to the guest network, I want them to use some external DNS source and not my organizations DNS servers.  So, I set the dhcp scope options to point to other DNS Servers.  When I do, the users don't seem to be redirected to the WLC guest portal, they get nothing and because of that, they cannot get to the Internet.
I am not sure why this is happening.  The re-direction URL is https://1.1.1.1/login.html?redirect=www.google.com?/ocid=iehp
I don't understand why pointing a guest client to an external DNS servers would cause the guest login page not to come up.

The issue is likely that you are attempting to redirect an HTTPS page. See this link for more information:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wlan-security/115951-web-auth-wlc-guide-00.html#anc7
You didn't mention your code rev, but it seems that 8.0 is able to redirect HTTPS for guest portal.

  • New Domain Controller DNS Issues

    Hello,
We currently have 2 root Domain Controllers (ROOTDOM) and 4 child Domain Controllers (MYDOM). ROOTDOM is an empty domain, everything on our network uses the MYDOM domain.
These existing DCs were running Server 2003, so we upgraded the schema and added 2 Server 2008 DCs in ROOTDOM and 4 Server 2008 DCs in MYDOM. All servers are DNS servers and Global Catalog servers.
The AD replication status tool shows replication is working perfectly between the new and old DCs, and everything looks up to date in AD and DNS on all servers.
The new servers have a SYSVOL and NETLOGON share as they should.
The servers are all in the Domain Controllers AD group and have correct static IP addresses, forwarders are pointing to the 2 old 2003 ROOTDOM DCs which in turn point to an internet source which works fine.
The problem is that when I change the DNS server address of a machine in MYDOM to one of my new 2008 DCs, the machine appears to lose connectivity with the domain. As soon as I put the DNS server back to one of the existing 2003 DCs, connectivity resumes
    as normal.
I really don't understand what else I'm missing on those 2008 DCs, could you give me any pointers of where to look?
    ROOTDOM          MYDOM
    2003RDC1         2003DC1
    2003RDC2         2003DC2
    2008RDC1         2003DC3
    2008RDC2         2003DC4

                            2008DC2
                            2008DC3
                            2008DC4
The issue is slightly complicated by the fact that 2008DC2 has a hardware failure so DCDIAG (understandably) reports replication issues to that at the moment.
    Any pointers greatly appreciated.

    Hi Kev,
    >>The problem is that when I change the DNS server address of a machine in MYDOM to one of my new 2008 DCs, the machine appears to lose connectivity with the domain.
Before going further, does the 2008 DC belong to MYDOM domain? For AD-integrated DNS servers and if these servers belong to the same domain, they should hold the same set
    of DNS records.
Besides, we can check DNS event logs to see if some related events were logged.
    Best regards,

  • Total throughput and client limitations per guest anchor controller; 7,000 guest clients

When I read the specs of a Cisco 5508WLC I read the following :
Cisco 5508 Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) – 8 Gbps and 7,000 guest clients
What happens when client 7001 tries to connect ? Is this a hardcoded like the max 500AP's limit ? Or is this just a guideline ?

7000 is the number of entries it can handle in its client database. So you cannot have more than 7000 clients in single 5508.

  • Server 2012 Domain Controller / DNS Issue

If you did ipconfig /registerdns, I'm assuming you did ipconfig /flushdns prior to that correct? Just want to make sure...
Once you are sure you did both, go ahead and type in nslookup in the command prompt. What does it display as the current DNS server? Once you type that in, you can type in the IP address of your new DC and see what it resolves to. Please get back to us with those results when possible.

We had a domain controller go down in a multi domain controller environment. We set a new one up and promoted it to the domain. Assigned it all the necessary roles and joined it to the domain. It has been 4 days since we did this and we cannot ping it by host name. We can ping it by IP address. I have forced replication, which allowed me to ping it by host name for a few hours, but then it stopped working. I have tried to change the DNS primary to a different DC, making the host a secondary DNS, that didn't fix it. I am looking for any suggestions on how to fix it. I have done a ipconfig /registerdns , restarted DNS services but still not able to ping host name of DC on a consistent basis.
    Any suggestions ?

  • Virtual WLAN Controller Guest Anchor

We are planning a WLAN upgrade and the security policy is to forward wireless Guest user traffic to the DMZ controllers. We are now considering the Virtual WLAN Controller and all AP's will register with the virtual controllers and we will use Flexconnect for Staff and internal traffic that will switch their traffic onto the local switch.
We wish to forward the guest traffic to the DMZ Guest Anchor controller which will be a 5508 controller. This will also offer Office Extend AP service.
I have looked at teh virtual controller docs and not very clear if this deployment model is supported. Below is a diagram of what we wish to deploy and can anyone advise if thsi is a supprted deployment model.

Well you can use the vWLC to anchor to a 5508, but not the other way around. So if you use the DMZ 5508 for OfficeExtend, you will not be able to anchor the traffic back to the inside. Cisco doesn't support reverse anchoring for a Remote-LAN in OfficeExtend and requires you to actually have the OfficeExtend AP's connect to an inside WLC. In v7.0.x you were able to do this reverse anchor, but it was removed on later codes.

  • Guest Wireless Tunnelling - DHCP Issue

    Hi,
I'm attempting to implement Guest Anchor tunnelling between two WLC's but I've run into an odd issue I cannot find a clear answer to.
We have two 5508 WLC's, both Running 7.4.100.0.
The Guest Anchor Controller obviously resides in a DMZ, it's functionality has been proven by connecting an AP directly to it, and connecting the the guest WLAN.
The two controllers have been configured as Mobility Peers, the Mobility Tunnel between them is up (mping and eping both successful, status is up).
The Guest WLAN has been replicated on both controllers, I have set the Mobility Anchor on the WLAN. The Guest Anchor has itself as the mobility anchor and the Internal Controller has the Guest Anchor set.
DHCP is provided by the Guest Anchor's internal DHCP Server. DHCP Proxy is enabled on both Controllers, with the Option 82 format set to AP-MAC. Both Controllers WLAN settings are set to DHCP Server Override, pointed to the Management IP of the Guest Anchor and DHCP Addr. Assignment required.
The problem I'm experiencing is with connecting clients through the Internal WLC. The Client Associates to the Internal WLC and obtains a lease from the Guest Anchor and connects to the network. A few seconds later the client is dessociated from the internal controller. On every subsequent connection attempt, the client does not recieve a response to it's DHCP Requests, and hence ends up with an apipa address.
The Message logs on two controllers return the following errors:
    INTERNAL CONTROLLER:
*apfReceiveTask: Jun 27 14:03:25.839: #APF-4-HANDOFF_END_RCVD: apf_mm.c:1626 Handoff end received in wrong role (peer Ip: 0.0.0.0, sender:GUEST_ANCHOR_IP, Role:0) for mobile Client_MAC
    GUEST ANCHOR CONTROLLER:
    *DHCP Server: Jun 27 14:03:14.466: #DHCP-4-REQIP_NOT_PRESENT: dhcpd.c:559 Received a packet without a requested ip!.
Has anyone else seen similar behaviour? Does anyone have an ideas what might be causing this?
    Many Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi George,
    Thanks for the reply.
The Guest WLAN on the Internal Controller is Anchored to the WLC in the DMZ. The Guest Anchor is anchored to itself.
There are only two controllers in the configuration, so breaking off one of the Anchors isn't really an option.
I have tested the Guest Anchor as a Standalone WLC by connecting an AP directly to it, in that configuration DHCP works as expected.

  • Multicasting with a guest anchor configuration.

    Hi All
    First time posting. :-)
I have a guest anchor controller in our DMZ servicing Apple devices. We are looking at options for using Apple TV to display/stream presentations from executive iPads and such. Since it uses bonjour (multicast) would I be able to utilize the new features available in 7.0.116.0 to implement this solution? I have 4 WiSM 1s servicing the headquarters building and one 4402 guest anchor. I believe this is possible based on the note in the document: VLAN Select and Multicast Optimization Features Deployment Guide; specifically the section:
Note: In a Guest Tunneling scenario, roaming between export foreign and export foreign is supported. However, roaming between export foreign and export anchor is not supported with VLAN Select.
    In case of Auto Anchor:
Clients joining a foreign WLC, which is exported to an anchor WLC and mapped to a interface group, will receive an IP address in round robin method inside the interface group.
Clients joining a foreign WLC, which is exported to an anchor WLC and mapped to a interface only, will receive an IP address from that interface only.
Clients roaming between two or more foreign controllers mapped to a single anchor WLC with an interface group configured will be able to maintain its IP address.
Since I only have one guest anchor, I would assume based on this that I would fall under the export foreign - export foreign option and implementing this would be possible.
    Could someone advise?
    Thank you in advance!!

Thank you for information, I have the same problem. So I made a search on EoIP tunnel and Multicast.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_qanda_item09186a00808b4c61.shtml
Q I have a guest tunneling, Ethernet over IP (EoIP) tunnel, configured between my 4400 Wireless LAN Controller (WLC), which acts as the anchor WLC, and several remote WLCs. Can this anchor WLC forward subnet broadcasts through the EoIP tunnel from the wired network to wireless clients associated with the remote controllers?
    A. No, the WLC 4400 does not forward IP subnet broadcasts from the wired side to the wireless clients across the EoIP tunnel. This is not a supported feature. Cisco does not support tunneling of subnet broadcast or multicast in guest access topology. Since the guest WLAN forces the client point of presence to a very specific location in the network, mostly outside the firewall, tunneling of subnet broadcast can be a security problem.
unofortunately it seems that multicast over EoIP does not work.

  • Guest Anchor N+1: Multiple guest WLANs and Mobility List

    Hi Experts,
We are going to replace two guest anchor controllers WLC4402 sitting in different DMZs with two WLC5508 as N+1 redundant pair in one DMZ.
I assume each guest anchor controller should support multiple guest WLANs. Is it correct?
And between these two new anchor WLCs, do they need to add each other to Mobility List?
Or maybe I should ask first, does it matter if they are in the same mobility group or not?
    Thanks
    Cedar

N+1 for guest anchors isn't what N+1 was designed for.  N+1 was designed for redundancy for WLC's supporting access points, not mobility anchors.  This solution might work, but I really doubt Cisco will support this setup, but I can be wrong.... you can always talk with your local Cisco SE or open a TAC case and ask.
Guest anchors should have a different mobility group name from the foreign WLC's.  You do need the foreign to have both guest anchors and the guest anchor to just have the foreign WLC(s).  The redundant guest anchors do not need to have each other in the mobility group list.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Wireless Anchor Controller Web-Authenication Redirect Page

I configured a wireless guest anchor controller with a  custom web-authenication acceptable use policy splash  page with an email box and accept or reject button. Everything is working properly except if someone types their email in the box and hits enter instead clicking on accept it redirects the custom  page to the default Cisco page.  After entering the email on the Cisco page and click on accept it allows connectivity.

  • Guest Anchor - Web Passthrough - Apple device web redirect issue

    Hi All,
I've setup a Guest Mobility Anchor at DMZ with 5508 WLC. I've setup the EoIP mobility tunnel and everything works so far.
Now, I was testing multiple clients to connect to the Guest SSID and observed that Apple devices are not redirecting url, resulting unsuccessful connection.
I looked Cisco docs and added the command "config network web-auth captive-bypass enable" on the Anchor as recommended.
Even after executing the command, I'm still facing web redirect issue with Apple Devices. I don't have any issues with other devices, except Apple.
My controller running code AirOS 7.6.130.0. I'm using DMZ controller as DHCP server for Guests and public DNS servers as 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4
How to solve this web redirect issue? Will a Third-party generated CSR solves the problem?
    Thanks,
    CJ

    Hi All,
The issue was with WISPr Protocol with iOS Clients. After upgrading the AirOS Code on the controller to 8.0.100.0; the issue with Web Redirect is resolved.

  • Guest VLAN unable to get DHCP IP address from Anchor Controller

    Hello everybody,
In our test set up, we have two WLC 5508 Controllers connected via Checkpoint UTM-1 firewall Inside and DMZ Interfaces. Both the WLC controllers are connected to the firewall via Cisco 3750 switch. On the Local (Inside) Controller, guest SSID is enabled and attached to the wireless management Interface. On the remote anchor controller, guest SSID is enabled and attached to the Management Interface as well. The following configs are replicated on both the Controllers.

Is there any thing missing in the wireless configs and or the firewall rules as i could not see DHCP request back from the Anchor Controller. Also, after DHCP is obtained, the web authentication request will be redirected to an Amigopod device for authentication. In this case is the redirect URL congiguration to be performed only on the Anchor Controller or is this to be replicated on both the Local and Anchor Controllers.
    Thanks and Regards.

The DHCP issue is resolved if external DHCP server is configured on a 3750 switch connected to the WLC and the default gateway for DHCP points to the Firewall, which is in the data path between the Inside and Anchor Controllers. DHCP is essentially bridged (no Proxy setting now) from the EoIP tunnel to the Distribution system network. We will test this solution on pilot production and then consider upgrading to 7.0.116.0, as there are about six offices running 7.0.98.0, which will need to be upgraded.
For L3 security,  configuration is set up on both the controllers for external captive portal redirection.I will try this only on the Anchor and revert.
Thanks again very much for all your help.
