Guest network shows unsecured--why?

how can i make this secured? there is a password attached. i can connect using password. if i don't use password, then limited access (whatever that means), but it shows in available networks list as unsecured.

Remember also that the Linksys Guest Networks are not only unsecured, they are all unencrypted.   That's is why Linksys routers with Guest Networks are not recommended for businesses, only home use.   All other manufacturers use encrypted Guest Networks.

I'm not sure why the guest net work is unsecured.  I would have thought that would not be an option but it is unsecured.  Would anyone know how to secure the guest network [2.4 GHz]?  Also when I view the guest list some devices stay displayed whether they are in the vicinity or even turned off.  That adds to my paranoia with the guest network being unsecured.   I also can't edit the screen names to know who the device belongs to like is available in "my devices", forcing me to keep a MAC address list.  I guess I could ask them to edit the name of their device.  Any suggestions greatly appreciated.  Thanks Mickey

The guest network is designed that way. Though it shows unsecured, it uses a security – HTTP authentication in which your guests will be required to enter a password through a web browser. Your guests will be prompted for the password once they open a web browser to connect to the internet after connecting to the guest network. With regards to some devices stay displayed even if they’re turned off or not in the vicinity, it could be by design. I have EA6500 and am shown the same thing. There’s actually an option to change the name of the devices. Once you click on a certain device, it has the edit button (to change the name) and the change button (to edit the type/icon of the device).

I have 2 wireless networks set up:  One named BigMoose which shows to be secured.  The guest wireless neetwork is
BigMoose-guest.  It shows that it is unseured.
My problem is:  I don't know how to make it secured.  I have a seperate password for the uest site but when someone signs

Can someone please help me with this?

All other manufacturers have full WPA2-AES security on their guest networks.
    Hi sabretooth,
Guest network is secured. It appears to be unsecured but once you will access a website it will prompt you for the password, @cuberoot is correct there is no option to unsecure the guest network if there is teach me how.
Guest networks are designed for guest, so that if you have visitors they couldn’t access your files because it has a different IP address. The IP address of the guest network is 192.168.3.XX
It is...  OK please tell me what security is available for the Guest network please?  WPA, WEP or WPA2??

  • E2500 guest network

Few questions about the Cisco/Linksys E2500 router. Not sure if this is the right forum, please let me know if there is a more appropriate forum.
    1. How can I setup a different wireless security for the main network (WPA2/Personal) and guest network (WEP)?
    2. How can I see the DHCP clients connected to the guest network? The router config web interface only shows this for the main network.
    3. By default, Cisco Connect uses the same password for the router (192.168.1.1) and the main SSID. Is it possible to go into Advanced settings and change the router password or would that mess up Cisco Connect?
    4. The guest network appears as a unsecured network but when you open up a browser to access the Internet, it redirects to the router password page. This is fine for devices that have a web browser facility. But how can I activate the guest network for other devices like, say, a gaming console Nintendo DS, Wii or a Logitech Squeezebox Boom internet radio, Roku media player, etc. They appear to connect to the guest wireless network but are unable to access the Internet.
    Thanks

    1. The guest network is unsecured like ALL free guest networks from McDonalds to Starbucks.  No security is needed or wanted otherwise you would have to enter that security password all the time.
    2.  I don't think you can.  You know who is on your Guest network because they are in the house and you gave them the password at the browser prompt.
    3.  If you use the web browser to do anything the Cisco Connect will not work anymore.  Go into the settings and look around to find out all about your router.  You can always reset everything and start over.
    4.  No, the Guest network is for computers only.

  • E3000 Guest Network

Does anyone know if the E-Series Routers (E3000 in particular) has a timeout for the Guest Network access? I can't find any documentation about this. When I test it, it I access the guest network, close my browsers, logout, restart, etc, etc and still can access the internet through the guest network without having to authenticate again.
Basically what I'm trying to accomplish is I want guests to able to access the internet when they are in the office, but I would only want them to have access for the day or for a few hours and then they have to re-enter the password. I know if they have the password already, they can just re-enter it, but I would still like to force guests to Re-Authenticate again.

Guest network is unsecured and anyone can connect to the wireless network. But when you open the Internet browser it will ask you for the guest password.
I don't think there is any time out for Guest network access.
When you connect to the main wireless network, your computer will save the password for the main network. next time it will connect to the main network automatically without asking for the password.
I think this is how the Guest network might also be working.

There is no set time when LTE will be available on the iphone 5 with MTS.  The LTE network works well with MTS but currently our agreement with Apple does not allow us to activate it for the iphone 5.  However we are working with Apple to get LTE access for the phone.  I apologize about any inconvenience this may have caused you.

  • How to setup a guest network when the dialogue boxes do not show up in AirPort Utility 6.1

How do I setup a guest network when the dialogue boxes do not show up in AirPort Utility 6.1?
I see screenshots where there are boxes to 'enable' guest network but these simply do not apear on the Wireless tab in AirPort Utility

I now have a guest account, thanks to you!
I did the factory reset and was able to set up the guest account.
There were 3 problems, all of which I was able to solve.
The first problem was connect to Ethernet, which I selected by WAN port, as shown in the first screen shot. This page used to read just Ethernet and the Bridge Mode.
The second problem was whether to share a range of addresses or share a public IP address. I selected share a public IP address as shown in the first screen shot. I had tried the range of IP addresses in my earlier attempts, the ones that failed. Hopefully this will have no effect.
I have forgotten what the third problem was - only excuse is a few too many flavored drinks. I didn't have any problems solving it though.
What is really weird is I can log on to Guest and use on my iPad (first generation), my wife's iPod Touch (third generation), and my wife's 2011 MacBook Pro. I can't log onto Guest on my 2008 iMac, even after a restart. I get the image below.
Since I don't lug my iMac around a lot and it is connected by Ethernet, while my little make it right brain says figure this out, I am not going to worry about it.
Thank you again for your time and patience in helping me solve this.

  • No password on guest network = unsecured network overall?

    Hi
Just wondering if leaving the "guest network" password free creates an unsecured network overall? I just purchased an Airport Extreme to replace a D-link router [that would no longer stream airtunes (to my airport express) since I upgraded to snow leopard. (A common problem it seems)] Airtunes works great but to maintain a connection for the Nintendo DS's in the household I have to leave the guest network without a password. Is this a security issue?
    Thanks

No. The guest network of an AirPort base station uses a different set of IP addresses, so the two networks are isolated from each other.

  • HP Pavillion dv6000 shows it is connected to Airport Extreme Guest network, but does not allow internet access.  Anyone have ideas what to do?

My MacBookPro works fine on both primary and guest networks.  HP info shows excellent signal strength.  Web page won't open.  Tried reducing security level from WPA2personal to WPA.  Tried entering TCP/IP addresses manually in HP.  I'm told that the HP works with other WiFi routers and can access Internet through other WPA2 setups.  I'm out of ideas.  Help?

With a PC, the Windows Firewall and/or the anti-virus software will sometimes block an attempted Internet connection.
Check both applications to see if you can find a "blocked" item and then take steps to "allow" the connection.
If still no luck, temporarily disable the wireless security for a short period to see if the PC can connect that way. If it can.....then you know it is security related issue.
See if the PC can connect using a setting like WPA-PSK-TKIP. The equivalent Apple setting would be WPA/WPA2 Personal.

  • HT3477 Why would a Guest network need an Access Control List?

I have an Airport Extreme running software 7.6.4 and I have figured out today, to my dismay, that because I have an Access Control List active on my main network (with MAC addresses of my devices), the Guest Network feature, as implemented, becomes simply useless.
Essentially any friend coming at my place, to whom I want to share my internet connection for a while (say, a couple of hours) with an easy password, either provides me with the MAC address of his device, or has no access at all. And if he has to give me the MAC, then I could just simply add him to the main network in the first place and, BTW, I need to give him also the (complicated) password of my main network.
What is the purpose of a Guest Network then, if it is subject to the same access restrictions of the main one? I need to remove the access list on my main one, to offer quick and easy access to friends and family defeating the purpose of protecting my main network with MAC addresses and a separate guest network?
I don't get it. This is a bug. It has to be. I see no logic in it, in the way it is implemented. Or it should have 2 separate access lists, for flexibility. But a *Guest* network, should be by definition open, or easy access (with password, sure, if necessary) - and in case it should have restricted access, it should be by time maybe, not by MAC address....!

Why would a Guest Network need an Access Control List
The short answer would be that it would not need an Access Control listing......if you used the default settings in Timed Access.
Sorry, but I do not understand how you have constructed your Timed Access control list.
Normally, you would use the default settings and leave the "main" (and "guest") networks set for Unlimited Access.....and then only list the devices that you want to limit separately, establishing "rules" and timeframes for each device that you want to control.
When you do it the default way, a user would be able to connect to the Guest Network at any time, provided that he/she had the password for the guest network. No MAC Address needed at all.
If you wanted to limit the time that the "guest" could connect to the guest network, you would have to set up a "rule" for the guest. I would not normally think of limiting the time that a guest could connect.....(unless the guest were one of the grandkids).
It sounds to me as if you might have set the default network setting to No Access, and you have then set up each device with the times that they would be allowed to connect.
If you did it this way, then the default No Access would also apply to the Guest Network....and any guest would have to then be set up by MAC Address with a rule set for the times that they were allowed to connect.
Personally, I have changed the default rule for the "main" (and guest) networks from Unlimited Access to Everyday between 7:00 AM and 11:30 PM. So no one on either the main or guest network can connect before 7:00 AM or after 11:30 PM.
Then, there are a few rules that I have for devices that connect to the guest network to further limit them to certain times each day. You could do this as well for devices that you want to control on the "main" network.

  • Guest Network & WAN access ... Why?

Just bought a TC. Everything works great. 5Ghz network, regular 2.4 Ghz network, but the guest network has me a little nervous. It functions however if you are on it and load up Airport Utility, you have full access to the TC.
I want to use Setup Over WAN for use on the regular networks but I don't want Guests to have access... Am I doing something wrong or is this a case of "It's just the way it is"?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the discussions, dw1985!
but the guest network has me a little nervous.
We had a chance to test out the Guest network feature recently when my sister was visiting and using her MacBook to connect to the "Guest" network here.
She could only connect to the Internet and was not able to "see" any of the other devices on the main network, such as other computers, Time Capsule, etc.
Since you are taking bandwidth away from the main network when you enable the guest network, you might want to turn the "guest" network on only when you have "guests".
I did not test the setup over WAN, so can't comment on that but would point out that when you do this, you are connecting to the Time Capsule from a remote location over the Internet. If you don't need this capability, you might want to disable that function.

  • HT4628 Why does internet connection on my Time Capsule cut out (on main but not guest network)?

Hi - I just got a time capsule 802.11n to use with my Macbook (OSX 10.6.8).
My wireless connectivity on my main (but not guest) network cuts out EVERY FRICKEN DAY multiple times.  The internet phone connection + guest network still work, so the internet connection is there -- something with the main network is going wrong.
When I reset the time capsule (remove plug and plug back in), it works fine again.
Can anyone recommend a solution so this connectivity problem stops?  Never had any issues with my Netgear wireless router, so at the moment, I'm really disappointed in this Apple product.  Hopefully there is a setting I can switch to fix this (or something else simple one of you smart people out there can recommend)
    Thanks,
    JLG

In any event, if your OS X version is 10.7.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion:
    Lion: AirPort Utility 5.6.
If your OS X version is 10.5.x or 10.6.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.5.3:
Leopard, Snow Leopard: AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
After you install the appropriate version of AirPort Utility, open it. The program will be located in your Utilities folder, which in turn is found in your Applications folder.
To open the Utilities folder, go to the Finder and select "Utilities" from the Go menu:
AirPort Utility 5.6 looks like this:
... but make sure you use the version of AirPort Utility you just downloaded.
Launch AirPort Utility and select your Time Capsule. Click Manual Setup, then the Guest Menu tab, then you can elect to disable the guest network, or to establish whatever security settings you want.
The window looks somewhat like this:
If your version of AirPort Utility does not look anything like that, you are probably not using the one you just downloaded. Find it and start over.
When you are finished configuring your Time Capsule, click Update and allow the Time Capsule to restart.

  • WRT1900 Guest network...

I turned off the guest netowrk option altogether as having it turned on exposes an unsecured network that advertises what type of router it is.  This is a security disclosure in my opinion.
The guest network option in this router may need to "mature" a bit.  If a user needs to browse to connect, what is the point of this?  Why not use regular security (or open) methods when the connection is made?
Also, an option to have a user conffiguralbe guest login page (html) would round out the solution as you could "welcome" your guests, present usage rules or what ever.
Just food for thought to help mature a new product.
    Thanks!

I also planned to turn OFF my guest network because of that, but had no option but to leave it ON since I have visitors using the net. I hope Linksys would see this thread and perhaps they’ll do something about it.

  • E4200 Guest Network Not Working

I cannot get the Guest Network feature to work.
Even though Guest SSID is enabled, it does not show up on any devices attempting to connect. Manually connecting by entering the Guest SSID fails (not recognized). On devices with the primary 5 and 2.4 GHz configured they do see the third network but without SSID (unknown) and are also unable to connect to it manually using the SSID.
    Here are my settings:
    Firmware: 1.0.02
E4200 is configured in Bridge mode (WAP).
    5 GHz Network
    Mode Mixed
    SSID Astro2-an
    Width Auto
    Channel Auto (DFS)
    SSID Broadcast Disabled
    2.4 GHz Network
    Mode Mixed
    SSID Astro2-bgn
    Width Auto
    Channel Auto
    SSID Broadcast Disabled
    Guest Access
    Allow yes
    Name Astro2-bgn-guest (cannot be changed)
    Guest Password testpassword
    Total Guests Allowed 5
    SSID Broadcast enabled
I did not try this before 1.0.02. Have rebooted modem and verified all configs (multiple times). The network is live in an office and can't keep screwing with it or drastically changing its settings.

I have now tried 3 of these routers and the problem as I see it is when you set the E4200 to bridege mode with a static IP then the client receives a .33.x address receive the E4200's default gateway and a .33.1 as the dns servers. I don't see how the clients could resolve dns with these 2 entries.
Alas, I have think I have now figured out why some people can connect using the E4200 in bridge mode as a guest and some cannot. It is my belief that Cisco needs to update the firmware to allow you to enter dns values on the staic page because if you set the E4200 to obtain an IP address automatically then it receives good DNS info. You can verify my results by looking at the staus page in staic and dynamic mode.
I hope this helps people that are having problems.......
(Mod Note: Edited due to non-compliance of forum guidelines.)
Your findings are correct. However I don't see where adding a static DNS would work. What Cisco needs to do is provide the DNS of the connected gateway for internet access when in bridge mode for guest connections. Then restrict routing to just the gateway for internet access and no local routing.
