Guest only access on Back to My Mac

I have three computers, all running 10.8.1. Two of the computers are at my home and the third is at my office. All three share the same appli i.d. with Icloud.
When I try and access the mac at my office remotely, I can only get guest access. It will not let me log in with my ID or user name/password. ( no alert, the log in window just shakes ) From the office mac I can access the other two mac's fine, screen share etc. with my apple ID. I have tried switching off btmm on the work mac and logging off icloud, restarting and logging back in, but I still get the same result...just guest access.
I've searched the support articles and have not found a similar issue.
Anyone with ideas would be great.
thanks

  • Remote shared drive access without Back to My Mac

I recently bought an external high-capacity LaCie drive to store all my media content, photos, etc.  It is shared over our Airport Extreme wireless network to my MBP.
I would like to be able to access the drive from my MBP when I am away from home -- whether traveling on business, or working out of another location; in either event, working from somewhere that is NOT on my home's local/wireless network.  I know the Airport Extreme can allow the drive to be accessed remotely via a MobileMe account (which I have) and a couple Macs properly configured to use the "Back to My Mac" service.  However, if I understand that service correctly, it is designed only for situations in which there are two macs, and one needs to access the other.  In my scenario, there's only one Mac -- my MBP which would be with me at whatever remote location.  The external drive I want to be able to access, would just be sitting on my home office desk connected to the Airport, as always.  Is there any way I can connect directly to that drive while I'm out and about somewhere?
    Thanks!
    Dan

Well I think it's certainly possible - if you check out the Disks/File sharing tab in the Airport Utility you can enable sharing over the internet via Bonjour.
That's the easy part - the difficult part is how to maintain security yet gain access. You'll need to allow access back via you router, so there will be faffing about with NAT, and of course it will depend on whether you have an external static or dynamic IP address - both can be accommodated but with different actions.
I don't know enough about your network to comment further.

  • HT4867 Problem, I can no longer admin my kids' computers using back to my mac

Now that the kids need to use their own icloud account to sync the ipods, computers and update apps I can no longer use my ID to manage their computers remotely.  Why not a separate spot to log in for back to my mac outside the icloud ... this is a problem.  Now all of MY comptuers are no longer accessable on my account because of the need for the kids to use other iCloud access to keep their stuff updated.

These are all MY computers ... my teen children just happen to be the ones that use them.  My point / question is aimed at the fact that Apple has now illiminated the last few features that were any use to me by forcing this move to iCloud.
It is not possible to screen share with any computer that is not listed on your back to MY mac  since screen share is part of that same system.
Now that the kids each need to have Icloud access to keep the ipods updated I can no longer do system updates with out sitting in front of each computer to do each update. This is a major waste of my time. Previously, I could just screen share and update them all from my office at MY business.
I was happy paying for mobile me and first they striped out "groups" which was a feature I was using, now they are killing Idisk which I was using and file sharing which I was using and web hosting which I was using, pretty much leaving only features that I have no use for remaining.
I had planned on buying Ipads and few more computers in the near future but I am so disappointed in the direction Apple took icloud I think I am done buying any more Apple hardware until they return some features to Icloud that I need.
Judging from this answer you must not have any teen kids to try to "admin" systems for.  This situation requires Apple to acknolage that they need to add an administration access to back to my mac that works around the individual users ID.
Itunes has a seperate ID access ... why not do the same with Back to My Mac??? Admin level and user level???
Icloud is now totally useless to me.

  • Can you setup both VPN server and Back to My Mac on Lion Server?

I have been trying to figure out if this is possible for some time. Can you use both Back to My Mac and VPN server services at once on a OS X Server?
So far here is what I have found:
    - According to http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1629  Back to My Mac and VPN use the same UDP ports(500,4500)
    - I have been able to get my VPN service working by removing all access for Back to My Mac(in System Preferences->iCloud) as well as removing all "Mobile Me" access on our AirPort Extreme.
The moment I try to add an account to access the network via Mobile Me(ie Back to My Mac) on the Airport Extreme, I am no longer able to make a VPN connection.
Checking the Service VPN Logs, no log entry is shown for the failed connection.
    So, my questions are:
    1. Has anyone been able to get these two working on the same server/network?
    2. Is there any way to change the default ports used by the VPN server service on Lion Server?
Thank you to anyone that can provide any suggestions.

Just as FYI....I just started using iCloud and tried the "back to my mac" on a mac server that is my VPN server.
Enabling "back to my Mac" prevents the VPN from being useable.
Disable "back to my mac" and the VPN works again, as verified from both another MAC and an iPhone.

  • Airport keeps dropping Back to My Mac

Internet still works, but can no longer connect back to my mac remotely.
Checking my airport using the Airport Utility. Not only is the Back to My Mac status not green, but the little circle is missing all together. Signing back in puts it back to green, but goes off again soon after.

    Shouldn't be any Mac required.

  • Can only access one Mac via Back to my Mac

I have Back to My Mac set up on my home Mac and two Macs at my office. I can successfully connect to one of the Macs at the office from home, but not the other.
Both office Macs are running Mountain Lion, have Back to My Mac enabled with the same iCloud account credentials, and are on the same LAN/router/switch. My home Mac is running 10.7.5 and cannot be upgraded to 10.8 (it's a very old Mac Pro 1,1.)
Because both office Macs are on the same LAN, those Macs can see one another in the Shared Sidebar in Finder, and I can Screen Connect that way, but I can't access the second office Mac from home for some reason.
I've tried stopping/starting Back to My Mac on the troublesome Mac numerous times (as well as my home Mac), and followed the instructions elsewhere on Apple's site to delete all the Back to my Mac Keychains and recycle the connection, but it didn't help.
Because it's a corporate network, I don't have direct access to the router settings (both work Macs complain that NAT-PMP and/or UPnP aren't on, but since I can still connect to one work Mac from home, that doesn't appear to be the problem.) Both Macs are connected exactly to the network the same way, though, so I'm confused as to why one Mac works while the other doesn't.
Are there any other settings I can check or confirm on the problematic Mac? Am I incorrect in assuming I should be able to connect to two different Macs remotely using the same iCloud account? I just assumed all the Macs I have would be connectable via Back to My Mac if they used the same credentials.
    Thanks,
    R

    Hello Robbie,
Thank you so much for the details you provided reguarding the Back to My Mac trouble you are experiencing.  You have taken some really good troubleshooting steps already, but I recommend reviewing the steps in the section titled "Troubleshooting Back to My Mac" in the following article (you can skip the steps you have already gone through):

  • Back to my mac guest password not working or changeable

    Hello,
I'm trying to connect to my mom's macbook pro (2010 Leopard) using Back to My Mac. I am running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) on my iMac (2Ghz Intel Core Duo). I am unable to upgrade to Lion because my iMac is too old.
I have upgraded my mobile me account to iCloud but I am still using Back to My Mac with my Mobile Me information.
I have gone through all the steps for entering mobile me acct info on both computers, turned file and screen sharing on - on my mom's mac, turned off her firewall, turned off virus barrier, etc.
I am able to reach the point where my finder window shows her computer and I can click on it.
My trouble is that when I click Connect As, there is no option to connect with an Apple ID.  There is only an option to connect as a guest or registered user.  I can connect as a guest, but then, when I try to use screen sharing, I still need a name and password. Nothing I have used has worked.
If I try to Connect As, as a registered user, I have the same problem.
Thanks a lot for any help.

I finally figured it out.  Needed to update her Airport firmware and allow guest access, and also changed Sharing preferences to Allow Access for All Users.

  • Back to my mac -- connect as guest is default

I have a couple of computers using 'back to my mac' screen sharing and file sharing with no problems (powerbooks, ibooks, mac mini(intel), and old G4). I just got a macbook pro and configured it with the same mobile me login info, etc, sync all mail/bookmarks/etc with no problems. However, when trying to connect to all other computers using screen sharing in the finder, it defaults to connect as guest. My mobile me credetials don't get used -- I have to specifically use an existing username/password from the maching i'm trying to connect to.
When I enable back to my mac, I do get an error saying teh router isn't configured for upnp, but it is -- four other machines are using it no problem this way with no problems.
Its only this laptop that has an issue. Firewall is off for all of this.
    Any suggestions?

I can't turn File Sharing off. I still want to file share. But I just don't want to connect to this "share" using the information that the Finder is defaulting to, and autoconnecting with. There doesn't seem to be a way to do this. I went through my entire KeyChain and I couldn't find anything that would account for this. It's as if the Finder thinks that because I connected to this share using my appleID once, it now defaults to this every time, and I have to actually disconnect and then reconnect with the login info that provides me the level of access that I require. Not sure if this makes sense.
I do appreciate the help. Thanks.

  • I "think" I upgraded to Mountain Lion. The only reason is I need to back up my mac to iCloud. Now I can't find how to do the back up.

Also now I can't hold down the "control" button and use the "wheel" on my mouse to enlarge the page so I can see the **** thing.

Open Accessibility preferences in System Preferences. Click on the Zoom icon in the list:
Set your desired Zoom options in the attached panel:
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    Mac 101- Time Machine
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Data Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Is it possible to use the ipad to access a mac mini running mountain lion and back to my mac?

Is it possible to access a mac running mountain lion using Back to my Mac?

To my knowledge the iPod can only be used as a secondary monitor since you have to boot up the Mac and turn on the secondary display. You would still need a KB and pointing device for the Mac
However, you can log into the Mini from an iOS device like an iPad using app like LogMeIn, GoTo MyPC or TeamViewer on both the Mac and the iPad. You use the touch screen on the iPad for all control of the Mac.
As you said, that would be tedious for a lot of typing but you could use a BT keyboard for the iPad.

No, Back To My Mac only works with machines you have registered to your .Mac account.

  • Accessing MBP and Mac Pro from iPhone (back to my mac? VPN?)

i am running Mountain Lion on the Mac Pro and Mavericks on the MBP and i am wondering if i have options for accessing these computers from my iPhone 5.
is this Back to My Mac and if so should i be able to access both computers from the iPhone while running this and what should i search for for setup instructions? or is this a utility only for getting back to my MBP running Mavericks from the iPhone or for getting back to my Mac Pro from my MBP? i am a bit confused about all of this.
also, does VPN get me something that Back to My Mac does not?
    TIA for any help

Back to My Mac is for connecting from one Mac from another Mac with your iCloud account. iOS is not a Mac, so that isn't a supported feature – tell Apple you want it – http://apple.com/feedback/
A VPN is not the same as Back to My Mac. A VPN is a way to 'securley connect into a network from the outside' so that you can access your home network whilst away etc. VPN's can be created on computers or some routers. A VPN on a network can potentially allow you access to everything on that local network.
You should probably read up on what each of them is…
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_my_mac
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn
You will need to explain what exactly you want to access - e.g. the files on the Mac, or use the UI to control the Mac (as if you were in front of it).
Apps like Screens can allow you some access to the Mac via iOS http://edovia.com/screens
You may find is much simpler to store required files in Dropbox & access them on iOS, it really depends on what you hope to access.
VPN's can be setup with Mac OS X Server, but that is probably not something to run unless you really need it (and have time to learn how to set up correclty - it will require you open up ports on your router which is a real security risk).

Regarding your first question about bookmarks, I think you discovered the answer in when you pressed the address bar. The second tab there has your bookmarks.
As for the keyboard, I'm not sure why your Firefox is reacting so slowly; mine seems to show keyboards even when I don't want them. If you have accumulated a lot of history, perhaps that's an issue?
Did you use any third party software to move your Firefox data from internal memory to the storage card?

  • Is it possible to set up Time Capsule on one network and then access its stored data (movies) using Back to My Mac from another network that also has Apple TV to play them?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to store data at my office.  I have an Apple TV at my home that I would like to start using to play my movies.  With the storage of the new Time Capsule, I am curious if I can somehow store my iTunes movies on the Time Capsule at my office and then use Back to My Mac to access the TC from my home and then play them via Apple TV.  Does this sound possible?  We have an iMac at the office that remains on 24/7 connected to the TC.

ATV cannot play movies from the TC, even if it is on your home network.. ATV is a streamer.. it is not a media player.. and the TC is a dumb as a board hard disk in a router.. so it has nothing in it either.
You cannot play movies from ATV without itunes, which streams to the ATV.
If the iMac is running 24/7 then you should be able to connect to the iMac remotely and run from iTunes on that, which could then play movies stored on the TC.. with the following issues.. if you use wireless on the iMac forget it. The iMac has to be ethernet connected as it has to pick up the movie on the library and play it back to the TC to network to your home.
The next issues is speed of slowest connection.
Your download to your home maybe great.. what is the upload speed from your office like??
If you pay for uploads and downloads you will pay for the movie 3x.. first to download it.. second to upload it.. office to net..  and third to download it again.. net to home..  Sorry but it is better to play the movie directly from online itunes store.
If you plan to try and play non-itunes movies over the connection, it won't work.. ATV as stated is linked to itunes and cannot play movie files.
Overall this sounds like you need to think it out a bit more.
