Guest wifi with Airport Express

Is it possible to create a guest wifi hot spot using the Airport Express? I currently have a 2Wire modem/router which provides a wired and password protected wireless network. I'd like to use my Airporrt Express to add an additional password free wireless connection that would not have access to my main network. Is this possible with the equipment that I have?

You can configure the AirPort Express as a "bridge" to "Create a wireless network" and connect to another router using an ethernet cable. But, using an Apple device as the main router, guests connecting through the Express will be able to "see" other devices on the network, so you would probably want to password protect the AirPort Express network.
I don't know whether a 2Wire gateway could be configured to work as you desire. My guess would be no, but I may be wrong. In any case, it's probably a question for 2Wire support.
Instead of "AirPort Express", you could substitute the phrase "wireless access point" in your post and then post it on the 2Wire site.

You need to change the radio settings from automatic to 802.11a - 802.11b/g on your capsule, then I put it back to the default settings...
Now in the AirPort utility you should see your iPhone connected to the AirPort

Extending wifi with airport express and time capsule

I'm new to macs and moving over in a big way!
I started with a time capsule and all was fine apart from the coverage in the house.
It seemed easy to extend the wifi so purchased an AE 802.11n and extended the network.
It does extend and I can connect to the internet but the network is now really really slow and the time capsule backup wont work.
connection is :
Ethernet modem - Airport express ( as its close to my audio equipment ) - extended WIFI conection via 802.11n.
Any suggestions? why is it so slow?
Im at 7.3.1 firmware on both AE and time capsule and the Macbook pro is at 10.5.3.

I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36.

Please look for the model number on the side or bottom of the device. It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.
What operating system are you using on your Mac or PC?
Do I need to connect them with a cable ?
Yes, if you want maximum performance, as wireless is always a compromise in quality of signal and speed.
Is there a benefit to connect them with cable?

Extend Wifi with Airport Express when Airport Extreme is in Bridge Mode

Hello,
I'm trying to make my Wifi network easier at home but Im having some trouble.
My Internet Provider installed a Router at home. So I had to connect my Airport Extreme to the IP Router via cable and setup in Bridge Mode.
In my Airport Extreme I created a Wifi Network called WIFI HOME.
Than I connected two Airport Express into my Airport Extreme via cable and created two new wifi networks: WIFI HOME 2 and WIFI HOME 3.
But, in my opinion, this is not cleaver way to have my Wifi Network setup, since I have to change networks all the time.
The problem is that every time I tried to extend my current WIFI HOME setup into one of the Airport Express, the Airport Express crashes during the setup reset and my network starts to behave wrongly.
I'm starting to think that is something related to the Bridge Mode in my Airport Extreme. but I want to check with you guys if that makes any sense.

Power off both of the AirPort Express devices
Disconnect the Ethernet cables
Wait a minute
Power up one of the AirPort Express devices for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express if it is a two port version
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a listing of New AirPort Bsee Station
Click on AirPort Express
The setup utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network. Then, it will suggest that the Express be configured to Extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Type in a name that you want to call the AirPort Express. Example........Express1
Click Next
Then, the screen message will change to indicate that the AirPort Express is being configured to extend using Ethernet.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
The first Express is now set up and working correctly.
Set up the second Express exactly the same way........except give it a different name to avoid confusion.....Example......Express2.

Problems with wifi with AirPort Express

I use the latest model of the Airport Express router to access my apartments wifi with my iPhone, Apple TV, Macbook Air, Ipad.
It usually works very well, however 1 out of 4 times its like the router does not give me access to the internet, even when Im logged into the wifi.
I then click 'Open Network Preferences' - Assist Me and go through the guided tour and then it works fine again.
This is the case with all my devices AND my girlfriends apple devices. We never have problems with other internet connections.
It's like the Express router allows me to login always, but sometimes it forgets to open for the internet so to speak.
Help me please, its really annoying!!

I have an airport express second generation. I also have my internet connections coming through a cisco router. Is it possible to extend the wireless signal coming from my router (with an ethernet cable) using my airport express?

Yes it is, if you establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection from a LAN <--> port on the Cisco router to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
Your next question might be "how" to setup the Express.
We'll need to know what operating system you are using on your computer, or whether you want to use an iPad or iPhone to set up the Express.

That is what I have suggested....twice now. From posts above:
My opinion would be that it is likely not the ISP, unless you have complete loss of Internet service for all devices at the same time......it is the Comtrend device....
and
I believe that the problem lies with the modem, and not the ISP signal.
Your ISP will likely have a different opinion, though. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Is is possible connecting a Trekstor wifi Storage with airport express? I wanna use Itunes and this storage for streaming music with mit mac pro book (OS X 10.9.3)
Or is it nessaray to use a apple wifi storage like airport extreme?

In theory, the Trekstor should be able to connect to an existing network either via a wired (Ethernet) or wireless (Wi-Fi) connection. The AirPort Express, depending on the model, can supply both.
On the other hand, the Express DOES NOT support hard drives connected to its USB port; whereas, the Extreme and Time Capsule base stations do.

I cant go on youtube with the wifi from airport express, its alway show that the webpage not found so I try to connect the lan to my mac ,its work. Anyone know why amd how to fix it. (only youtube and google doesnt work)

After the last upgrade, my itunes doesn't open (this happen only the first time after the start of my pc). It seems frozen.To re-open Itunes i need to terminate APS deamon every time from task manager.

I have MacBook Air 13 mid 2013 os x 10.9.5, ipad 4 ios 8.0.2, ipad4 ios 7.1.2 , iphone 5 ios 7.1.1
When i try to use speedtest.net from my Macbook i got good results of download speed and incredible upload http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3801286946 (connection 300 Mbps) , both ipads got terrible speedtest download result and incredible uploadhttp://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/981631804 (connection 150 Mbps), iphone 5 got bad download and great uploadhttp://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/981695357.
All these tests were done near airport express with really good signal and 5ghz. I tried to choose different channels, 802.11 mode, guest ssid, 5ghz ssid ...

As a last resort, try a factory default reset on the AirPort Express as follows:
Power off the AirPort Express
Wait a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
On an iPhone or iPad home screen....
Tap Settings
Tap WiFi
Look for a heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station. If it appears.....
Tap on AirPort Express just below the heading to start the configuration process on the Express again
If you try several factory default resets, and the AirPort Express does not appear under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station, the Express most likely is defective and will need to be replaced.

I have a new iMac and Time Capsule, how do i extend the network with airport express. My time capsule does have a guest net work, and logins and passwords? I am no computer person. So for me it would have to be spelled out.

You cannot extend the guest network unless everything is up to date 7.6.3 firmware. And that is only with the TC as the main router in the network.
All apple routers can be configured as the main wireless or as the extend wireless.. so don't worry if a post uses express or extreme or TC.. they are for wireless, the same thing.

At present it is not very good using earphone jack on my Iphone 4 to Hifi. Will it improve with airport express. What is the difference between airport express and extreem. Re Airport Express. I use one of these to play Apple Lossless files through my hifi. The stereo connector on the Express is capable of both analogue and digital output. To use the analogue output - which is the same from standard stereo equipment like CD Tape players, and iPhone headphone connector, use the standard plug with the appropriate connectors for your amplifier. To use the digital output, you will need to use a toslink cable - AND your amplifier will need to have a digital in port. The toslink will need to have a connector that fits inside the connector on the Express ( it is a bit longer than the usual stereo / headphone jack and allows the laser light inside the Express to shine down the cable to the amp - which may have a slightly different connector and require an attachment to the end of the tosling cable. If your amp does not have a digital connector - my does not - then you could purchase a stand alone DAC that takes the laser light and converts it to analogue output. These can vary in price substantially but MAY givea better sound - depending on the quality of the DAC and the quality of the amp. The Express has a built in DAC that is used if you use the standard stereo cable, and by-passed if you use the toslink cable.
Quality
The difference in quality will depend on the type of files you are using, your amp and your speakers.
MP3 files may not sound any different, but Apple Lossless or FLAC files which are much higher quality MAY - or MAY NOT - sound better using toslink cable and the DAC compared to using the analogue output and standard stereo cable from the Express.
Personally, I use Apple Lossless files from iTunes and the analogue output from the Express into Rega Amp and Royd Speakers and I'm very pleased with the sound. I have considered using an stand alone DAC but feel the extra expense is not worth it in my case. You could start with the same setup and see how it sounds to you. The quality is difinitely very good and you can add the toslink cable and DAC later. The latest Airport Express may contain an even better DAC than earlier versions so may sound even better.
If you have an iPhone, you can use Apples Remote app to control iTunes on your Mac, to choose music,change track, change volume etc. This all works over the wifi network. You can also stream music directly from your iPhone - or your friend's iPhone - to the Express over the wifi network.
I have my MacBook Pro in my office space, 15 metres away in the next room, my Express and stereo in the living room and my iPhone in my hand on the couch and I'm delighted with the flexibility and the sound.
I have no experience with bluetooth for sound.
