GuestPC & OS 10.5

Hello:
I've been running GuestPC 1.9.7 on my G4 powermac since 2006. It has worked flawlessly under Tiger. Yesterday I upgraded to Leopard...
And while I haven't put it thru a ton of paces just yet, I did fire up a GuestPC window (I run Win2000) and got a couple of things going (started an app also went online to check for security updates), and bammo got a kernel panic.
I know that G4s and GuestPC are a bit 'retro' in these days of Intel & Parallels....
But do any of you know of definitie compatibility problems between GuestPC (after all, it hasn't been updated since '06) and Leopard? Is anyone here running this combination with no problems??
Thanks!

You should probably go right to the source and contact GuestPC support.

  • Windows programs on a PowerPC Machine

Hello, everybody, I have an upgraded Power Mac G4 sawtooth which has seen it's years of use, and never gave up and never will. Although I have intel macs that can do this job, I was wondering if there was a was I can possibly run windows programs right on the desktop's screen seamlessly as if it was running natively. If I remember correctly, Microsoft Virtual PC 6 and 7 for Mac could do this, but it's ancientware, and I can't find anything for it. My G4 sawtooth is more than enough to handle emulation and virtualization, I have done it before using Q, but I, for some reason can't run the windows programs on the desktop as if it was seamlessly running with the system. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
    System Specs:
    Power Mac G4 Sawtooth A.K.A (PowerMac3,1)
    PowerPC 7447a Sonnet Encore ST 1.6Ghz G4
    2GB PC-100 SDRAM
Flashed ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB AGP
    1.67TB HDD space
    23" Dell monitor (Left)
    65" Toshiba (Main)
    23" Dell monitor (right)
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    Firmware version: 4.2.8f1

Note: The serial number is from the logic board of a completely different G4 sawtooth since I had to get it replaced as the AGP slot failed to work one day.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Q, VirtualPC, Wintel, Open Darwin for PowerPC, Lismore Systems GuestPC, iEmulator are all the solutions I know that work for PowerPC.

  • Internet Explorer vs Safari

I just switched to a Mac after about a decade of using PC's (due to work). Unfortunately, there's a website that I need to access but Safari can't open. It's asking for me to select an application in order to open the site. Anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

i thought this duo-core thing's supposed to be able to
handle both windows & mac stuff?
It does. You just need to have Windows installed in a second partition (or be running something like Virtual PC, Parallels or GuestPC).
From a security perspective, I would be suspicious of any website that automatically downloaded a .exe file to my desktop - if I were running a PC.
I wouldn't download Windows Media Player. It's trash (in my opinion). Instead, download Flip4Mac. Basically that app plays Windows Media content through Quicktime. Really nice.

  • How to open an .exe file

Please forgive me for posting this question. I've spent time looking for an answer in the boards here and haven't found anything that works for me.
I need to open and .exe file that I know is a flash style game that I need to see for work. I don't need a full Windows emulator. Everything I've tried so far doesn't work. Crossover, Filejuicer, Tgemu, they don't work.
I'm not familiar with the whole emulator process, I just need a simple and hopefully free program that will run a game for me.

As others have said, there is no such thing an Intel G5.
Use this article to identify your iMac:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
If you have an Intel iMac, then you can run:
    Apple's Bootcamp
    Parallel's Workstation
    CrossOver Mac
    DOSBox
    VMWare
    Wintel by Open OS X
    Open Darwin's DarWINE
    iEmulator
    Q (QEMU) by Kberg
If you have a G5 iMac, you can only run:
    Wintel by Open OS X
    Open Darwin's DarWINE for PowerPC
    iEmulator
    Q (QEMU) by Kberg
    Lismore System's GuestPC
    Microsoft VirtualPC
Only WINE and Crossover solutions require no Windows installation.
As for running games, Intel Macs have much better graphics acceleration in certain virtualization engines listed above, whereas PowerPC Macs (including G5s) have none. Thus if you have don't have an Intel iMac, I'd get one, or another Intel Mac to test your game, if it requires any graphics acceleration.
WINE/Crossover has very limited application support, thus if you've tried your game on it, and it doesn't work, contact CrossOver and report the bug, if you have an Intel iMac, that they need to fix CrossOver to make it work. Unfortunately you may have to run Windows on your Mac to run the game. I would mention to the game developers, they should seriously consider crossplatform programming software such as Revolution, or RealBasic, or Flash, or Sun Java. Microsoft Java, ActiveX, DirectX, Visual Basic are not crossplatform, and are more subject to viruses and spyware.

  • Confused with all the software, need some opinions...

Hi, I am a recent Mac owner who is slowly trying to figure things out (I am bad with computers anyways) My dilemmas are: I was considering purchasing Office for Mac but then I see that there is also VPC so if I purchase VPC and download my Office for Windows on it, then I probably do not need Office for Mac. On the other hand I have read that VPC is pretty slow. The pricing of VPC is also a concern. I have researched few sites with similar programs like VPC that are cheaper and run pretty much like VPC (anyone heard or tryed IEMULATOR? www.iemulator.com, which is $25 , or guestPC www.lismoresystems.com, which is $50). The other thing is that i saw these sites about software that reads PC Cds on Mac (cdeverywhere.com and is about $40), and softarch.com/us/products/dm./html , which is about $60). So my question is if I have one of those virtual pcs or iemultor or whatever pc on my mac then i would not need those other PC reading software, coorrect?
All I need is to be able to exchange my files from my ibook to my pc desktop and viceversa with the easiest and cheapest software i can get. Anyone who has tried one of these mentioned above, I would appreciate your opinion on your experience with it. I like my ibook so far and all I am trying to do is to get the most use out of it.
    Thank you in advance!

All I need is to be able to exchange my files from my
ibook to my pc desktop and viceversa with the easiest
and cheapest software i can get.
The cheapest way (ie free) is to use NeoOffice.
    http://www.neooffice.org/
This is a fully compatible and functional office suite for the Mac, it is also free.
It can open and save Word, PowerPoint and Excel files.
Hi, I am a recent Mac owner who is slowly trying to
figure things out (I am bad with computers anyways)
My dilemmas are: I was considering purchasing Office
    for Mac
This will also do the job as well and will be faster than using any emulated version of Windows.
but then I see that there is also VPC so if
I purchase VPC and download my Office for Windows on
it, then I probably do not need Office for Mac.
You would need to delete Office from your PC though, or purchase an additional licence in which case the Mac version would be better (and cheaper than buying VPC and another Office licence).
    On
the other hand I have read that VPC is pretty slow.
It can be, and the native mac version of Office is faster than running Office on VPC.
The pricing of VPC is also a concern. I have
researched few sites with similar programs like VPC
that are cheaper and run pretty much like VPC (anyone
heard or tryed IEMULATOR? www.iemulator.com, which is

Remember these do not include a licence for Windows which would be an additional cost.
The consensus about these products is that they do work, but are slower than VPC.
So my question is if I have one of those
virtual pcs or iemultor or whatever pc on my mac then
i would not need those other PC reading software,
    coorrect?
Macs can read and open compatible PC files without the need for third party software. If you have Mac Office (or NeoOffice) they can both open Office files created on a PC.

  • WINE for OS 10.4.3

I'm puzzled about whether WINE will run on my system 10.4.3. without a lot of additional hassle. A tax software company, Futuretax.ca, has referenced WINE for non-Windows users of their software. However, am reading conflicting info. on whether WINE runs only on Leopard. I don't want to spent lots of time on this, since doing the taxes is enough of a headache. Anyone with experience on WINE for OS 10.4.3?

There is a port of Wine for Tiger called WinTel and another called DarWine. There are several other emulators as well which are derivatives: IEmulator and GuestPC. Other options are Q and QEMUX. All can be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. There is also a G5 optimized version of Virtual PC 7.0.2 from Microsoft.
Note that PPC emulations of Windows are typically quite slow. Some of the above are shareware or commercial products.
A couple of the above have Intel compatible versions, but they are not really necessary because an Intel computer can boot directly into Windows XP or Vista using the Boot Camp Assistant in Leopard.

  • How to convert .exe files to .dmg files, if possible??

Hi all. Using a mac, im discovering that there are many software solutions available that do not come as .dmg files and therefore can not be played by macs. I was wondering if there is any software around that can convert .exe files to .dmg files, or something that can decompile and recompile in a different format? Thanks in advance

The iBook G4 can't run Parallels because it is a PowerPC, and not Intel, but it can run these solutions to get Windows to run:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/virtualpc.aspx?pid=virtualpc - which Kurt already mentioned
    http://www.openosx.com/wintel/index.html
    http://darwine.opendarwin.org/
    http://www.iemulator.com/
    http://www.kju-app.org/kju/
    http://www.lismoresystems.com/ - GuestPC
Mind you, you will need a copy of Windows on CD for all except the WINE solutions. WINE solutions though are not as compatible as the full Windows emulator and virtualization solutions.
The iBook G4 is usually only fast enough to run Windows 2000 or older versions of Windows. If you want to run XP or Vista, you'll want a newer Intel Mac that was released 2006 and later. The Intel solutions are typically virtualization and not emulators. Those have other solutions for running Windows Applications listed here (some are the same as PowerPC, others are not):
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/mac/
    http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/ - a WINE like solution
    http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
    http://vmware.rsc02.net/servlet/campaignrespondent?ID=vmwi.1756
    http://www.openosx.com/wintel/index.html
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2006060201470077
    http://www.iemulator.com/
    http://www.kju-app.org/kju/
Two programs which will open Windows executible ZIP files are MacZipit and Stuffit Expander. If neither can open those ZIP files, then in all likelihood it will need an emulator/virtualization solution above.
I've made a list of software search engines on my Migrating from 9 to X FAQ* that you can find Mac native equivalent titles to Windows compatible titles.

  • Deciding to buy

I am thinking of buying a new ibook and am a little confused. Not sure if this is where I should post or not.
    1) how is the word processing on the ibook?
    2) could I install windows? Do not want to if the word processor is great.
    3) If they decide to put intel chips into the ibook should I wait to buy? Did the macbooks work okay when they first came out with the chip?
    4) I am only using for internet, email, and writing term papers, itunes, no real gaming
    Thanks

    1) appleworks which is bundled with the iBook is a good, but limited word processor. Unless you are doing fancy things appleworks is good, but you cal also but MS office for the iBook.
    2) Windows will not run on the iBook with out an emulator like Qemu or GuestPC. And even then the emulation is a bit slow.
    3) I think Apple will put an intel chip into the iBook computers with in the next year or two. If you need a laptop now buy the iBook it is a great computer with very little problems, the intel ones are bound to have some problems because they are new. The macbook pro computers had many problems when they came out because mac has never run on intel before, and the iBooks should have less.
    4) Safari is one of the best web browsers (that is what I am using now). For email the mac mail program is pretty good, I used it until I got MS office now I use entourage, but personally I think that mac mail is better and I will probably switch back. iTunes is the best program for music, and is for both windows and mac, so there is no real difference there.

  • Need to Query Local Admin Group

I wrote (copied) some PowerShell code that will add a Domain User to the Local Admin Group using ADSI.
    $GuestPC = "WinNT://DOMAIN/UserName,user"
    $AdminGroup = [ADSI]("WinNT://"+$env:COMPUTERNAME+"/administrators,group")
    $AdminGroup.add($GuestPC)
I want to add an If - Else statement to check if the Domain User is already in the Administrators group.
    I found this code:
    $members = @($AdminGroup.psbase.Invoke("Members"))
    $members | foreach {$_.GetType().InvokeMember("Name", 'GetProperty', $null, $_, $null)}
This code actually lists the members of the Administrators Group.  Maybe its early or I did not get enough sleep, but I cannot figure out how to just query the Administators group for $GuestPC and if it is there don't do anything, but if it is not there
add it using the above code.
Something easy for someone out there I hope?

Finally found the answer on Google.  Just need to add -cnotcontains "GuestPC" in side a If-Then
