GUI Freezes but SSH, mouse and audio continue

Every now and again, my Mac Mini's GUI will freeze except I will be able to move the mouse cursor (not click), whatever audio is currently playing will continue, and I'll have SSH access from my MacBook Pro.  I have SSH'd in and looked at 'top' to see if any processes are hogging the CPU, and I've never seen any out of the ordinary processes.  Sometimes a command of 'sudo shutdown -r now' will restart the computer but other times I have to do a hard reset with the power.
How else can I diagnose this?  What terminal commands should I be using to discover more information?

  • Mouse and Audio stutter/freezes with Intel ICH9R AHCI drivers

    edit: Initially (in original post) I suspected the random mouse and audio stutter/freezes were from a driver update. However between a reboot during these updates I had disconnected an eSATA cable from a drive that was not powered. It turns out the ICH9R when running in AHCI or RAID mode with appropriate drivers installed has problems with some HDDs when the drive isn't powered but the SATA data cable is connected. This is quite normal in SATA enclosures which I have plenty.
    What makes this more puzzling is that the stutter/freezes are very tiny and hard to notice IF you don't have any PCI cards connected. With a Intel 100 Mbit PCI NIC connected these stutters became real blocking issue that would have prompted me to return this Gigabyte G33 motherboard (Also affects P35) to the shop had I noticed this issue sooner. I'm not yet sure whether this stutter w/ AHCI/RAID issue affects only the Gigabyte boards but what is certain is that it does affect these in quantity based on how there's others reporting the exact same issue if googling around.

    This issue has been confirmed not to be limited to just my system.

    Same problem here, it's not limited to Vista, also happens on XP/2003 both 32/64 bit. I'm 99% sure it's to do with the Intel AHCI/Matrix storage driver. It'd be interesting to know what your motherboard brand/model is. Mine is Gigabyte DS2R and I've seen reports of this issue on other forums as well. I'm using the integrated Intel graphics and every component is Intel except Audio Realtek and Network Broadcom. The issue goes away by disabling AHCI/RAID but you lose hot-swap of SATA drives and NCQ.
    The primary indicator for this issue is that if any of the SATA ports has a drive that is plugged in but not powered up (and not powered down by the AHCI driver programmatically) then you get this global stutter/studder/hickups/choppy. In audio it sounds like tiny repeats. How bad it is seems to depend on what drive brand is plugged in etc so on some combinations it's very tiny and doesn't happen that often, on other drives it's more constant and easy to detect.
    I'd suggest you report at:

    btw. My AHCI BIOS/OROM version that is shown on boot with AHCI/RAID enabled is iSRC 1.07 08042006, what's yours?

    Though most posts in this thread involve laptops and many of them attempt to isolate the problem in wireless network adapters, let me assure you the same problem can show up in a desktop with wired-ethernet-only. (Admittedly, it's a Realtek onboard gigabit LAN, and Realtek has been fingered by a number of you for its drivers, at least its audio drivers.)
    On a brand new core2-quad P35 chipset machine with 4GB ddrII, with a completely clean install of Vista 32 business, I have been suffering intermittent global stuttering. It affects not only audio (of any sort, through any player, whether or not dsp-enhanced) but also video (you can see it in screen saver motion, for instance) and even cursor or mouse movement (hit and hold the spacebar in a text editor and watch the stuttering fun begin!). It's intermittent but not random; that is, it can disappear for a while after I apply one of my stab-in-the-dark fixes (read on) but can come back and then generally remains until I re-apply a fix. It's been like this since about day 1. Well, maybe day 2 or 3.
    I've seen so many variants of this problem posted in so many forums, with so many theories, that I could spend the next three months doing nothing but troubleshooting it, assuming I had the budget and time to try endless substitute components or re-builds from scratch, but there's no assurance any or all of that would actually fix it. I do have the Intel Storage Matrix AHCI drivers pre-installed, and Intel itself vaguely alludes to possible 'degraded performance in Vista' with regard to those drivers--is this what they're talking about? They don't say. I do have an Nvidia 8800gts, and Nvidia forums are full of complaints about unacceptable issues with their video drivers, but again it's vague, no smoking gun for global stuttering. I have tried THREE different audio configurations--the onboard realtek hi-def; an x-fi elite; and a c-media based Omega Claro card. I have the problem with all of them. Discovering how musical the c-media card is was a happy accidental side effect of this miserable odyssey, but it really just makes it more frustrating, since I now want to listen to music more than ever but can't find a permanent solution to this vexing problem.
    One of the weirdest symptoms is that the stuttering can re-appear (if it has been gone for a few days) just by connecting an external SATA drive, even if the drive is not turned on! Equally weird: simply going into the BIOS and just looking, changing nothing, exiting without saving, can cause it to reappear upon re-boot!
    And to ice this cake of weirdness, here are some things that can make it go away (sometimes, at least for a while): removing the external SATA drive and rebooting; removing and re-seating the cards on the motherboard; and clearing the BIOS (jumper or pull out the battery) and then re-entering all the same settings as were there already.
    The symptoms are driving me nuts, as audio is one of my main uses for a computer, but it's the HUH? quality of these various actions that can seem to make the problem disappear or re-appear that are really threatening my sanity. If anybody can sift a better clue out of these ashes of frustration than I can, I wish you would post it.

  • I am trying to edit a .mov video in Premiere Elements 12, but the video and audio do not sync.  They work fine when played in Quicktime.

    Hello,
    I am trying to edit a .mov video in Premiere Elements 12, but the video and audio do not sync as soon as I load it into the program.  It appears to work fine in Quicktime.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the reply. This is the plan.
    Open Premiere Elements 12/12.1 to the Expert workspace.
    In the Expert workspace, go to File Menu/New/Project and Change Settings.
    In the Change Settings area, select the project preset
    NTSC
    AVCHD
    AVCHD LITE 720p30
    OK out of there. In the New Project dialog that appears, note that it has your new project preset named.
    Be sure to put a check mark next to "Force Selected Project Setting on This Project". And, then OK out of there.
    Back in the Premiere Elements 12 Expert workspace, use Add Media/Files and Folders to bring your video
    into Project Assets. From Project Assets drag your video to the Timeline Video Track 1/Audio Track 1.
    Is there an orange line over the content in the Timeline. See screenshot for orange line to which I am referring.
    There should be no colored line over the content if the project preset matches the video properties. But, if you do see
    that orange line, then render the Timeline content by pressing the Enter key of the computer main keyboard or press
    the Render button above the Timeline.
    Do your video/audio now play back in the Edit area monitor in sync?
    Please let us know the result, and then we will decide what next.
    Thanks.

  • Video pauses and audio continues. HELP!!!

    When playing videos in iTunes the video pauses every now and then but the audio continues, after about 10 seconds the audio will appear on fast-forward as if trying to catch up to the audio. Has only recently started happening. What can i do? PLEASE HELP!V

    I am having the same issue I posted this elsewhere
    I have a Mid 2010 Mac Mini Server (full specs below) and very recently it has developed a strange problem.  I'll be watching something on iTunes and the video will stop but the audio continues.  If I move the mouse and click on the screen the video suddenly plays very fast untill it catches up with the audio and then for a while it will play normally.  I can go through this process 3-4 times an hour before I give up and stream to my iPad instead.
    in the beginning it only happened when I was using the HDMI cable but recently it happens when the mini VGA adaptor is plugged in too.
    its beginning to be very frustrating so any help would be truly appreciated.
    thanks

  • Video pauses and audio continues for a few seconds

    I searched and was unable to find an answer. When I play a video in any type of player from youtube to VLC, the video starts and then the video pauses, audio continues for about 2 seconds, and then the video picks up where the audio is. It plays normally after the beginning. Any idea what this could be?

    Although I don't have my mouse jumping around, I can see that both YouTube and AVI videos that I play are stuttering during playback. And it's annoying.

  • Youtube video's seem to "freeze" the image while the audio continues playing. Never had that problem with Internet Explorer...how can I fix this?

    I used to use a different...server?...Internet Explorer. Before, when I used that, I could watch video's on youtube and they would run smoothly-image and sound in perfect sync. Now that I'm using Firefox per suggestion of a computer savvy friend, I can't watch youtube vid's in the same way. Most of the time, the audio will keep playing, but the image will stop. The only way I've discovered to prevent this is to be playing with the mouse on the side of the screen constantly. (which, when playing music video's for background while cooking dinner in the kitchen, it's rather impractical to be running back and forth to be playing with the mouse)
    I'm not a very computer savvy person. I'm using a laptop...it's an Acer...I think I have either Windows Vista or Windows 7...

    Thank you very much.
    I scanned my computer and see that it is not a virus problem. The problem lies with FoxNews.com not being compatible with the latest Flash Player or plug-in. I can view on-site videos from within Firefox on all sites except FoxNews. It is the only site that has a huge separating space in the middle of the front page. and that displays a large area of code words where it should have an ad: "clicksor_default_url = '';clicksor_banner_border = '#99CC33'; clicksor_banner_ad_bg = '#FFFFFF';clicksor_banner_link_color = "
    I ran the super bug-killer "ComboFix" (thinking the code was from the "Clicksor" virus) and was relieved to discover that it wasn't a virus.
    I can easily view videos on FoxNews from within Internet Explorer (and there is no "clicksor" code displayed in IE either). The problem lies somewhere within the Firefox version of Adobe's Flash Player /plug-in or FoxNews' incompatible code. Users are being kept up-to-date with the latest Adobe updates, but FoxNews must be using old software and needs to catch up. There must be a lot of people having this problem.

  • GUI Freezing (but im using- doInBackground() )??

    I have developed a GUI that can runs several different processes.
    Even though each of the processes are called in the same way, only one of these processes causes the GUI to freeze up. (the others do not).
    There are 4 classes involved in this process.
    1) public class myFrame extends FrameView  2) public class myWorkerClass extends SwingWorker<Void,String> 3) public class StreamGobbler implements Runnable4) public class JTextComponentAppendable implements java.lang.Appendable The Frame contains a JTextArea where i put all of the output (and error). And it also calls the WorkerClass as follows:
    private void StepTwoButtonActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
            worker = new myWorkerClass();
            worker.setStepTwo(true); // sets necessary fields  for worker.
            worker.execute(); // runs "doInBackground()"
        }The relevent classes in the WorkerClass are "doInBackground()" and "CreateParser()" ( CreateParser() uses the StreamGobbler as shown):
    protected Void doInBackground() throws Exception {
      if (getStepTwo() == true)
          myGUI.getOutputArea().append("++ CreatingParser ++\n");
          CreateParser();
    protected void CreateParser() throws InterruptedException
            Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
            try {
                proc = r.exec(Command, Environment, WorkingDirectory); // Command, Environment,
                                            //and WorkingDirectory are global variables,
                                            // set elsewhere in the Worker Class
                StreamGobbler output, error;
                output = new WorkerStreamGobbler(proc.getInputStream(),
                                    null, new JTextComponentAppendable( myGUI.getOutputArea()));
                error  = new WorkerStreamGobbler(proc.getErrorStream(),
                                    null, new JTextComponentAppendable( myGUI.getErrorArea()));
                output.start();
                error.start();
                proc.waitFor();
                proc.destroy();
               } catch (IOException ex) {
                   System.err.println("\n ERROR: Could not perform opperation ");
                   ex.printStackTrace();
        }The Gobbler Class is as follows: (it uses the JTextComponentAppendable class - ill put that after this class)
    public class WorkerStreamGobbler implements Runnable
        private final String prefix;
        private final BufferedReader in;
        private final Appendable out;
        private Thread gobblerThread;
         * @param input - InputStream to process (error or output)
         * @param prefix  - optional prefix that can be placed at the front of each string if desired.
         * (For this project the prefix was originally left as ""  (nothing) );
        public WorkerStreamGobbler(InputStream input, String prefix, Appendable output)
            this.prefix = (prefix == null) ? "" : (prefix + ": ");
            this.out = output;
            this.in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(input));
         * The method used to start processing of the thread on a new thread.
        public void start()
            gobblerThread = new Thread(this, "StreamGobbler: "+prefix);
            gobblerThread.start();
        @Override
        public void run()
            String line = "";
            while(!Thread.interrupted() && line != null)
                try
                    line = in.readLine();
                    if (line != null)
                       out.append(prefix + line + "\n");
                } catch (IOException e)
                { /* likely to occur if the input is closed, but
                   * that is okay, just stop reading from it and die.
                    e.printStackTrace();
    }Finally, the JTextComponentApendable is:
    import java.io.IOException;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
    import javax.swing.text.JTextComponent;
    public class JTextComponentAppendable implements java.lang.Appendable
        private final JTextComponent output;
        public JTextComponentAppendable(JTextComponent toAppendTo)
            this.output = toAppendTo;
        @Override
        public java.lang.Appendable append(final CharSequence input) throws IOException
            SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
               public void run()
                   if (input == null)
                       output.setText(output.getText() + " null");
                   else
                       output.setText(output.getText() + input);
            return this;
        @Override
        public java.lang.Appendable append(final char input) throws IOException
            SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run()
                    output.setText(output.getText() + input);
            return this;
        @Override
        public java.lang.Appendable append(final CharSequence input, final int start, final int end)
                        throws IOException
            SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run()
                    if (input == null)
                        output.setText(output.getText() + " null");
                    else
                        output.setText(output.getText() + input.subSequence(start, end));
            return this;
    I was under the impression that if methods called by ".execute()" ( which runs the "doInBackground()" method) would NOT cause the GUI to freeze up.
    Is it possible that the process i started with "proc = r.exec(...)" created another process that was not run in the background? Would that cause the GUI to freeze up?
    Any ideas?

    One problem I see is that you're calling Swing stuff from within the doInBackground method and that's a no-no:
    protected Void doInBackground() throws Exception {

    CreateParser();
    }Why not use process and publish here?I got it working, so it doesn't freeze - (publish and process worked, thanks)... But im wondering if im doing this the wrong way....
    I need to be able to call "publish()" and have the output go to either a "error Textarea" or a "output Textarea"
    So In the worker class I changed a few things:
    public class J_Hats_ParentWorker extends SwingWorker<Void,ProcessingType>{ // Notice "ProcessingType"
    // All of these are newly added:
    protected void outPublish(String p)
           super.publish(new ProcessingType(p, myGUI.getOutputArea()));
        protected void errPublish(String p)
            super.publish(new ProcessingType(p, myGUI.getErrorArea()));
        @Override
        protected void process(List<ProcessingType> myTypes)
            for(ProcessingType p :myTypes)
                    p.myArea.append(p.myString);
        public class  ProcessingType{
         JTextArea myArea;
         String myString;
            ProcessingType(String s, JTextArea a)
               myArea = a;
               myString = s;
        }I then changed my Gobbler to determine if it is "output" or "error".. so the Gobbler does not append text to the GUI, it just sends it to be published
    public class WorkerStreamGobbler implements Runnable
        private final String prefix;
        private final BufferedReader in;
        private boolean out;                       // Instead of getting an Apendable object, i just test which "publish" to call based on this

         * The method used to start processing of the thread on a new thread.

                            myGUI.getWorker().errPublish(line+ "\n");
                } catch (IOException e)

                        Logger.getLogger(WorkerStreamGobbler.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
                    e.printStackTrace();

           CreateParser();
      public void CreateParser()

            error  = new WorkerStreamGobbler(proc.getErrorStream(), null, false);
            output.start();
            error.start();
            proc.waitFor();
            proc.destroy();
    }Does that seem all safe/good to you? Because it seems to work fine.

  • Swipe between pages feature is freezing with magic mouse and magic trackpad in Mavericks

    I am experiencing a bug in Mavericks with my Magic trackpad and the Magic mouse. This bug comes and goes and is very sporadic. When it happens I am usually in a browser like Firefox or Safari, or in iPhoto. Anything that uses the Swipe between pages feature usually locks up, and  on top of this it locks the scroling up and down function in the browsers and in iPhoto. The only thing that makes these functions work again is to reeboot or turn off bluetooth and turn it back on. I see that many people are having this problem in other posts, and I am just wondering if Apple is actually working on this bug or has somebody found what trigers this bug and do they have the fix for it?
    Thanks for your help

  • New Iphone 4 syncs everything BUT my music and audio books when I sync?

    Hi
    I bought a new iphone 4 to replace my 3gs. None of my music or audiobooks that show on itunes on my computer will sync with the new phone. I had them all on my old iphone. My new iphone is recognized when I sync. Ideas?

    As with others I have lost all my contacts since the recent update. I have tried to backup but it didn't work (much as I expected as the backup was done after the update). So I really don't know what to try next, if there is anythign to try next? I have checked iTunes and I have never had the sync Contacts box ticked and I have tried finding something on the computer itself, but this is where my technical skills fail me as I really don't know where to look or what to look for.
    Have I lost all contacts and therefore need to input manually, or is there something left to try?
    Many thanks.

  • My "Saved-for-iPod" mp4 video stops, while audio continues...

    This has recently happened both with saving iMovie HD 6.0.4 projects as mp4s, and for DVD. 1) In iMovie, I imported a .mov I made in iPhoto (slideshow with jpegs & added music). Just that one file. I then saved it for iPod. I played it in iTunes, and the first minute is fine, but then the video "freezes" while the audio continues. Same thing happened when I synched it to my iPod. 2) In iMovie, I imported 5 avi files and added dissolve transitions. Sent to iDVD 6.0.4 and made a DVD. Same thing. The video image freezes at some point, and audio continues. I previously made DVDs successfully, by importing avi files to iMovie HD 6.0.2 & adding transitions. I can't figure out what could be wrong. Any help is appreciated.

    I have the iPod Touch 32GB and my video podcasts do the same thing. The video portion just freezes randomly but the audio continues on. This happens with a variety of video podcasts on my Touch. Very annoying and unacceptable for unit in this price range. I would love to see a solution to this problem!

  • Quicktime video freezes/pauses/skips while audio continues at normal rate.

    So here's my problem. I used a Canon Vixia to record some AVCHD footage of my band playing at a gig. I imported it into Final Cut Pro 7 using Log & Transfer. I edited the footage just fine (very simple cuts to remove unnecessary footage and add some title overlays).
    However, upon being exported, whenever I opened the .mov in Quicktime, the video would pause, freeze, or skip while the audio continued. Then the video would move extremely quickly to catch up to the audio. It has done this exported as ProRes 422 (LT), Apple Intermediate Codec, and H.264 (I used Compressor to get it into H.264). The only program to play without any skipping/speeding up was VLC, and there was some heavy pixelization/grey screens going on.
    Upon a whim, I uploaded one of the clips to Facebook. It still played the skips for me, but I had friends tell me that it played perfectly for them. I used a different computer, and sure enough, not a skip in sight. Going back to my computer, it still played the skips/speed-ups. They are present in Facebook, YouTube, Quicktime (both 7 and X), MPEG Streamclip, and during preview by pressing spacebar with the file selected.
    I'm running this on a 15" Macbook Pro (Early 2011 model) with Snow Leopard (10.6.8), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5, and 4 GB of RAM.

    To
    Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
    Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
    Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
    Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)
    Buy and use Taiyo Yuden (or Verbatim?) brand blank discs

  • Videos Freezes but the sound still continues.

    Hi all, I don't know what my problem is, I've uninstalled and reinstalled many times, I"ve deleted all history and cookies, it affects all browsers. I need help.
    My problem is that the screen would freeze but the sound and the indicator on the bottom would still, but only for a few second, then everything is frozen.
    I either have to move my mouse arrow over it to get it to move again or wait for the little window that says flash player plugin has failed and then refresh.
    I use a small window and have it overlap a small edge of the video keeps it from freezing, don't know why.
    I"m at a stump here.
