Gui program doesn't look good with startx

I did not install a DE in arch linux, just to keep it lightweight. However, my GUI application doesn't look good running with start x.
is there any package I can install to make it look better, like fonts, visuals, or the only way is to install either KDE or GNOME desktops?

If you did not install a desktop environment or one of the windows managers, and you are using startx without having created your very own ~/.xinitrc, then you are using a very simple WM called twm.
You may really want to look at the wiki documentation that was linked in your other thread -- If you are trying to stay light, there are other choices to Gnome or KDE.   Look at i3,  Openbox, xfce4, or any of the other beloved environments discussed at length of these forums.
Even with twm, you can install and run a screen shot program.

  • KDE fonts under Gnome doesn't look good

Ok, most people complains about GTK fonts under KDE. I have the inverse problem, my kde apps doesn't look good into gnome.
If I run kde, the fonts are displayed properly with small size, but if I run gnome and the run a kde app, the fonts are very big.
When i run a gtk app under kde, the fonts are showed properly but it doesn't use my gnome theme.
Anyone have a solution on making kde apps looking good under gnome?

Even though it's the inverse problem, it's likely still the same solution.  Gnome has a Gconf setting for DPI.  Otherwise you change it as an option to X.  Where you do so depends on how you start up X though (startx, xdm, kdm, gdm, etc).  I'll post back once I'm in Gnome and tell you where you can change the DPI.

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
    Thanks

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

  • Iweb website doesn't look good on our web server (apache2)

    hello,
I made a website on iweb and then published it to a folder. I then copied the files to our web server (linux, sles9). When I viewed the files on my laptop, it looked fine. But when I put the files on the web server, it looks bad.
please see www DOT tkminc DOT com
Why are all the spaces full of capital letter A's? It's not just that. The second page doesn't look good either. I was all happy about using iweb until I saw the results on the web server. Why is this happening?
    Thanks,
    oskar

Why are all the spaces full of capital letter A's?
    I don't see any A's.
But if one does see such characters, it is normally because the server is (mis)configured to force all browsers to use the wrong encoding. See this note:

  • GNOME doesn't work correctly with startx only by GDM

This is driving me nuts, I'm having a bunch of problems because I'm starting my GNOME session using startx instead of GDM and this bugs me a lot because I prefer startx most of the times...
    1) One of the problems is that the sound does not work with startx. Starting through GDM, the sound is ok. What's even more frustrating is that sometimes, it doesn't even work through GDM
    2) I can't unlock anything in the "System » Administration" menu. All of the "unlock" buttons are grayed out and I can't click them. But it works on GDM. However, whatever setting I change (after unlocking) is not saved...

tandycorp wrote:But since your settings cannot be saved correctly you should first try to correct that problem, then the audio problem should  be easy to resolve. In my case the settings are saved correctly (I first installed gdm then completely deleted it). You may want to look to the hal wiki and add your user in /etc/d-bus/system.d/hal.conf. It looks like a session problem.
I've read the wiki but I don't know what should I do to the hal.conf everything seems "normal" to me...
    EDIT:
I don't know what I've done (changed lots of things lately and configuration files) but the sound seems to be working now... Not every time, but most of the time, it seems so. I have enabled the button sound (when you click a button) temporarily to see if the sound keeps working for the time being...
Also, the unlock button now is enabled and here's a thing I found about the settings not being saved. I open "Administration » Services", for instance, and click "unlock", input password, enable GDM, which was disabled of course and click "close". I open "Administration » Services" again and with everything disabled, I see that GDM is not checked, still, I click "unlock" again, the services list is unlocked and GDM is still unchecked. But, if I look inside /etc/rc.conf, I can see the gdm daemon was added to the list... If I reboot the computer, GDM will start automatically and if once again I go to "Administration » Services", now I see GDM checked. If I try to uncheck it, it will work, but I will only see the unchecked value in the "Services" window after another reboot. Is this normal?

  • How come the photoshoped images on my blog doesn't look good? They're a bit blurry.

Before saving the images in photoshop, it looked good. But after posting it on the blog, they are a bit blurry. Here are the links to the post: http://bit.ly/15Ytu4x and http://bit.ly/19RzUWE. Could someone please help?

I guess Blogspot is using some form of compression when you upload. Try re-sizing the images yourself in the Editor by saving a smaller copy (Image >> Resize >> Image Size) then add sharpening and try uploading again.

  • This doesn't look good.  Help would be appreciated.

Booted up into 10.3.9 after being on OS 9.2 which is on another internal drive and got a BLACK screen with this message.
etc/master password: NO SUCH file or directory
Lucky enough I was able to go back to my OS 9 drive. My 10.3 is still there on the desktop with everything in it. What am I looking at and how can I get back on my 10.3 drive? I have my OS disks and still can access my files if need be from my OS 9 drive if this can offer to any solutions.
Like everyone I have alot invested and do have most everything backed up on an external drive. **** good thing too.
Thanks to anyone with some suggestions or assistance.
    Chad

< have my OS disks >
Well. it would seem to me that the best way to proceed would be as follows:
You say you have backup copies of all your most important stuff.
You also say you have OS9 and OS10 installed on 2 separate hard drives.
This is not really necessary, as OS10.3 includes Classic (a perfectly functioning version of OS9).
I suggest that after making backup copies of anything else in your computer that you feel is very important, you reformat the bigger of your two internal drives, and do a complete clean re-install of 10.3.9.
Then you should just trash the other copy of OS9 so that the only thing your computer can start up from, is OS 10.
Also, avoid the "master password" thing by not setting one. I've heard many terrible stories of people forgetting the master password. IMHO a password for each user is more than enough to stop intruders getting into my computer, plus encryption software that make my most sensitive files impossible to penetrate.

  • Exported QTmovie quality doesn't look good at all..

I've composed, graded, and edited my sequence within FCS and just now exported it as a QT movie file.
It looks WAY less quality than the original movie file which was encoded with Compressor to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).
Let me explain about my workflow and please tell me what I am missing here.
    1. Shoot with Canon 5D Mark2 at the highest quality
    2. Encode the files to Apple ProRes422 (HQ)
    3. make a sequence and send to Color
    4. Create two grades, G1 is in color and G2 is in B&W, render and send back to FCP
    5. make a new sequence, put G1 in track v1 and G2 in track v2, bring it to Motion
    6. in Motion, change the top layer's blend mode to exclusion, save it and export as QT movie
    7. import the exclusion sequence to FCP, make a new sequence with it
    8. Now, v1=exclusion movie(background) and put v2=original color clips(showing part of it), send it to Motion
    9. Compose two layers with bezier mask putting some feather around
    10. Save it in Motion and export it in FCP as Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)
The final output looks bad. Especially, the feather and graded parts looks choppy and not smooth.
Information of the files before and after is almost the same except output file has *Integre (Big...)* right after Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)...
I will look into details and all the settings but if you think of anything please let me know.
Where to look and what should be set ...etc.
I'd really appreciate your input! Thanks in advance.

    Hi Nick,
Thanks for the link but it doesn't seem to apply my case.
I've already set the QT preference and I use Leopard+FCP7.
Maybe, I am using too much of Motion/Color for composing, layering, masking etc?
All the integration cause that kind of result??---Lesser quality export.
Please let me know what I should keep in mind most when I want to integrate FCP/Color/Motion, going back and forth.
I'd appreciate any advice from you!

  • Webpage looks good with tranparent boxes and photo background in live view but not in browsers

If anyone has time to help I would be very grateful.   I am new to dreamweaver and am trying to make a webpage with transparent colums and boxed text using styles.  It looks perfect in "live view" but when I look at it in any browser all formatting is gone.  It looks like the background with text on top layed out wrapped across the entire page.   I have not been able to figure out what is wrong in days of searching.  Does anyone know the answer?
This first the format I want and is what it looks like in Live View, the second is what it looks like in most browsers.

            <h3>What does NBCS Do?</h3>
<p>Since 2004 The Narragansett Bay Coyote Study (NBCS) has been developing science-based coexistence and management strategies for our newest top predator.  Coyotes, originally a prairie species, have successfully colonized all parts of the continental and nearshore us in the past 100 years. They reached the islands of Narragansett Bay in the mid-1990s. Since then coyotes have become increasingly abundant and problematic in some island communities.</p>
<p>In our history of cohabitation with coyotes people consistently  tried to eliminate them by hunting, trapping, and poisoning. Lethal removal  worked for individual problem animals but did not work as a population control strategy. Why? Coyotes have intrinsic physiological and behavioral abilities to control their own numbers. If coyotes are removed they increase reproduction and numbers rapidly rebound. The critical population regulation trigger is competition for food. As long as coyotes are well fed (with few coyotes competing for food) their populations will grow. </p>
<p>It is also known that opposite effect occurs if coyotes if coyotes are stressed by competition for food. If there are too many coyotes competing for the food available coyotes will drop the the level sustainable by those resources.</p>
<p>Understanding this relationship, NBCS scientists decided to study the resource use of coyotes on two islands in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. We used GPS tracking collars to find out where the coyotes were spending thier time. We theorized that if we could identify important coyote food resources - and control them - the coyotes would bring their own numbers down. NBCS calls this &quot;passive coyote management.&quot;</p>
<p> Since 2005 when we trapped and collared our first island coyotes we have continually found that the most important food resources to our study are provided by people. That means they are within our control That means we can control coyotes. If we remove anthropogenic resources (human subsidies) coyote numbers will drop to the level sustainable by natural resources. When coyotes are sustained only by natural prey (mice, woodchucks, rabbits, geese, and deer) coyotes numbers will be lower and they will provide helpful pest control services. </p>
<p>Based our scientific data NBCS generated a set of <a href="coyotes/Best Management Practices for Coexistence with Coyotes - Nov 8 2010.pdf" target="_new">Best Management Practices for Coexistence with Coyotes</a>- basically a toolbox for safe, sustainable, community coyote management. We are working with the towns in our study area to adopt the CBMPs and be the first community in the nation to successfully and sustainably manage coyotes. We also believe other cities and towns might be able to use our results as a template if they are experiencing coyote problems. We have only just begun to implement the CBMPs on our islands. We hope in the near future to have all our towns implementing the CBMPs - only then will we see the full impacts they make on coyote numbers and behavioral problems. You can follow our progress on this website.</p>

Helo thanks for responding .  I think it uploads...  It says it does as an assocaiated file when I put to the website.  But that sounds like it is the issue. Those format commands seem to be the one it is ignoring.  I am not familiar with html but I see that the href command is what identifies the path to the file I call TCAStyles.  I notice that dw puts all my files in a local public file and the structure is different - with no public file - at the site.
I am not sure what the 2 dots in the href command mean - there is not a full path.  Is this command valid?  I will try to look into the directory structure on local and remote site and will check for files.

  • Having problems compressing web movie, quality doesn't look good, PLZ HELP

    Hi guys,
I used to be able to create a sharp/ crisp clean quicktime 7 web streaming movie in compressor 3 with it's default settings but lately it appears to be compressing a very poor quality QT7 web streaming movie. I have not changed any settings as far as I know.
I have always used H.264 800kbps for High Bandwidth and never had any problems with quality or the way it looked.
Can anyone help me out please.
    Thanks,
    Zia

Are you compressing the same kind of source material (content) as before? If you have content with a lot of fast motion (i.e. sports), you might need to adjust the video bitrate accordingly (increase it).
You could also try implementing frame controls and try an other more appropriate frame size. Have a look at this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7525834&#7525834

for a moment i was having graphic issues w/ itunes or my compt. the new shadow at the top header makes it look like a bent metal. i like previous graphic where it was simply across the surface and the window simply pops-out of the screen among other window on your screen. also the void space at the bottom is disconcerting. it just appears that something that something had to be there. i see no additional value or function for these two new visual characteristics.

You can post feedback about iTunes from the main iTunes drop down menu.

Is it playing the SD or HD? It sure doesn't look good.
Also, you can only buy the SD from the AppleTV menus.

Hey, Kenuck, do you know when HD TV shows are coming to Canada?
The link you gave to the Apple Canada website does say that we can watch HD TV shows, as you quoted, and that we can buy Grey's Anatomy. Both of these things are unavailable at the iTunes Canada store and I can't find a date for when/if they are coming to the Canada store.
Anybody know when/if HD shows are coming to Canada?
