GUI unresponsive on start-up

Hi,
When I start up my Mac Book Pro 2.3GHz Intel I cannot interact with the GUI interface for about ten minuites.
All programs which run on startup (Calender etc) seem to work, but I cannot click anything or move anything. The Mouse can be moved and I can see the cursor but it does not register with the on screen programs or menus. None of the keyboard shortcuts do anthing. The only thing that seems to work is the power off button.
However, when the computer has finnished doing whatever all of the interactions I made on the screen happen. For example, if I have tried to move a window on the screen before then it will be moved after the computer has woken up. Then it seems to work fine.
I have done a single user start up and a -fsck disk repair. It came back as having no errors.
I have had this computer since 2006 and perhaps its getting a bit old now? This error only seemed to happen intermittently after updates, but now it seems to happen on every start up.
Anybody got any ideas?
Much appreciation....
J

Try this:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • ITunes unresponsive when starting up with iPod touch plugged in.

    Whenever I start up my iTunes with my iPod plugged in, iTunes is unresponsive for a few minutes. However if I start it up without it plugged in, it works fine. I've also noticed that if I start up the program with my iPod plugged in, then unplug it, iTunes will start responding. I have done a fresh install before some time back and it worked fine after, but now it's acting up again. Is there any ideas on how to solve this?

    I forgot to mention, whenever it does sync, it just gets stuck staying "verrifying ipod".
    Try having that topped off with freezing.

  • Black lit screen and unresponsive on start up

    My mid-'13 (purchased October '13) 11" MacBook Air turns on but only to a black lit screen (no curser etc), the keyboard seems unresponsive and when I close it, the Apple is still lit up. Been like this for 4 days and no change. Fully charged. Running on Yosemite as of last week. Has suffered from the screen going off and freezing for a few seconds from time to time.

    Hi Harrisongaw,
    Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    I know it can be worrying when your computer doesn't start up. If your MacBook Air is only starting up to a blank screen, but the Apple icon is still illuminated, I recommend resetting the system management controller (SMC) as a first step.
    You can find the steps to reset the SMC for your model MacBook Air at this page:

  • Firefox is unresponsive when starting

    i click on the icon it starts to load then it freezes and i can't do anything at all when i click on it it says unresponsive and i have to end it. just started this morning when i updated yahoo toolbar as per there suggestion now i can't use firefox at all. every answer i have found requires me to be on firefox but i can't use it

    Hello,
    Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
    '''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
    #Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
    #After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
    #Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    #*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    #*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
    #Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    ##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    ##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
    More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
    <b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
    Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • GUI Unresponsive, some windows are blank, why?

    Taking my first steps in Solaris - SXCE on a new Ultra 40. So far the SunStudio interface has been very buggy for me. I need some help getting  SunStudio(any) AND NetBeans (6.01)  installed cleanly and working correctly.
    While installing SS12 the interactive-installer window would pop-up fine, but totally blank, no text, buttons or anything would render in the window. Had to use the CLI installer. Then decided to replace with SS-Express to get NB-6.01. The uninstaller kept doing the same thing. Think I uninstalled all of SS12 with 'prodreg' but not really sure. it was a mess...
    Installed SS-Express and at least once the 'auto-update' window similarly failed to render correctly. Also the GUI is now SLOW. Like pull down the side-scroll bar on the start-page and it will happen 10 seconds later. All other desktop apps remain fully responsive..Noticed 'Java' was using lots of CPU while this was happening.
    I'm at a loss, so any help is appreciated!

    I posted a reply but it doesn't seem to have appeared in the forum.
    So, here we go agian.

    The only busy thread is the AWT thread and it's busy drawing things:

    This kind of blitting occurs when one attempts to draw translucent images, including
    anti-aliased text.
    The last time I saw this was in a version of nb 6.1 (post SunStudio12 express release)
    in the welcome page. Note how the stack trace shows that it's the welcome page being repainted.
    But it only was noticable if you xhosted which drastically
    reduces the latency of the x protocol. I'm surprised that this is happenning in non-networked X.
    To verify the above please uncheck the "always show" checkbox in the welcome page, close it and
    see if things improve.
    There is a fix for this problem with the welcome page. While you verify I'll
    try and see which version it's in and how we can get this fix out.

  • GUI unresponsive after method call

    very basic question: i want the start() method to execute my main code when i click on the 'Begin' button. here's the event handler:
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
            if ("begin".equals(e.getActionCommand()))
                start();
    }the start method then runs my main code, but the swing components are unresponsive. do i need to dispatch a seperate thread for the start method?
    thanks for the help.

    Looks like you forgot to register the listener with the button.
    Is the actionPerformed method executed at all?
    Try this:
    public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
            System.out.println(e.getActionCommand());
            if ("begin".equals(e.getActionCommand()))
                System.out.println(Before start());
                start();
    }

  • When i switch users internet becomes unresponsive, also started to hear the fan when just using normally

    Hi
    Had my macbook pro for nearly 9 months now and noticed a couple of odd things.
    1) When i switch from one user to another and i try to go onto the internet i get a page is unresponsive message.
    2) I've started to hear the fan when the computer is just doing normal activities like surfing the net etc
    I have googled and cant find anything similer, any ideas?

    4,000 RPM for idle load seems excessive, 2,000 is usually the norm.
    There could be various reasons for this:
    1: Dead sensor or fan, the other is compensating. - #3 Hardware Test needed.
    2: Need a SMC reset - #1 SMC Reset.
    3: You installed something that has a background process and hogging CPU cycles.
    Open Activity Monitor > All Processes and click on the CPU to sort the highest to the top and see if something unusual is hogging cycles.
    Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Other possible reasons:
    5: You have done something to place excessive and sudden demand on the processors at one time, thus the software is trying to anticipate that and pre-emypt your behavior and run the fans at a higher speeds in advance.
    6: Your machine is in a excessively hot environment
    7: Your machine is in a excessively dusty or animal environment and the exhaust ports are clogged with animal hair/lint., will require cleaning by Apple if still under AppleCare/warranty.
    8: There is malware on your machine, or your third party software is no functioning correctly leaving processes running.
    9: OS X needs to be reinstall on the machine. #8 Reinstall Just OS X
    10: You have a corrupted cache file. #12 OnyX cache cleaning routine.
    11: You have a 13" MBP and have been trying to 3D game on it, didn't wait for it to cool down.

  • AME becomes unresponsive on starting Queue

    Hi Guys,
    Anyone else having this issue? Will appreciate your assistance if so.
    I have a number of encodes to complete. Some for DVD, some for BluRay and some for Vimeo. I queue all these up as I want them ticking along during the day while I get on but afer taking the time setting up the queue I hit the go/start/play button and then AME thinks about things before becoming unresponsive and I need to shut it down to quit and try again.
    For the record, I do have the native Premiere Pro import option checked as I love the way it loads in Premiere Sequences but if this is the problem then I will have to shut off.
    Many thanks,
    Alex

    Hi Larry
    Thanks for coming back to me.
    Larry Sullivan wrote:
    Are you using GPU accelaration?  There's a Renderer menu at the bottom of the AME queue, if this is set to CUDA or OpenCL try switching to Software Only and see if that helps
    Yes I am currently using the CUDA option. Found this has been great at speeding up the encoding, espeically with h.264 media. Not keen on switching this off long term.
    Larry Sullivan wrote:
    Disable "parallel encoding" in your Preferences, this will tell AME to only encode one job at a time.  It will take longer but may avoid the freeze (or at least show you which output is failing)
    I will give this a try. I ended up doing each encode manually one at a time and it seems to me that it may have something to do with this. It did apprear that one encode of a particularly long clip was the one causing a slow down/crash
    Larry Sullivan wrote:
    Are you sure you have enough room on your destination drive for all the outputs in your queue?
    No problem here. 12TB on the destination drive.
    Larry Sullivan wrote:
    What's the state of the Encoding panel when AME becomes unresponsive.  Is there a specific process mentioned?  Ex: "Reading XMP..."
    No. It just is blank and shows as if it is doing something but never really gets there. When I click on the application it's then that I get the spinning beach ball!
    Larry Sullivan wrote:
    Try resetting your AME preferences by relaunching the app and holding the Shift key down
    I will try this.

  • HP Split x2 Ultrabook (unresponsive upon start, and defective screen)

    Dear Sir/Miss,
    I purchased the HP Split x2 13" Ultrabook PC (i5 Intel Processor) from BestBuy a little over a year ago. For the duration of the first year everything was fine. I did have some issues with the trackpad being unresponsive, but I was able to resolve that issue on my own. However, over the past week the computer has not been responsive when I press the power button. I am forced to press the button 10 to 15 times just to get the computer to start. Additionally, whenever I adjust the angle of the screen, the PC shuts off and goes into sleep mode. I had a guy from Geek Squad check it out and he told me he believed some of the connectors/wires between the keyboard, and tablet we're defective or damaged (apparently a common issue with hybrid laptops). The laptop has never been dropped, or handled roughly. I did check some of the HP support forums and found that many other individuals expirienced the same problem with this particular model. To rule out any software issues, I ran a virus scan using Norton 360, and Malwarebytes, and then I performed a factory reset on the PC, however, the issues with the power button, and screen still persists leading me to believe that the malfuntion is related to a hardware defect. My warranty expired on December 4th of 2014, however, if this is a defect in the PC's hardware will HP service the laptop? Any repsonse is greatly appriciated!

  • Photoshop CC unresponsive on start up

    All of a sudden Photoshop is taking a long time (5-10 minutes at least) to start up for me. The main window, dialogs, and file will be displayed on the desktop, but clicking on any part of the UI has no effect and keystrokes have no effect.
    Everything has been working fine for as long as I can remember, up until this morning.
    The only thing that changed recently was that I upgraded SilverFast Ai Studio to the most recent version, but at this point I believe it is stand-alone software in terms of scanning. I tried uninstalling it anyway, with no effect.
    I also tried uninstalling Photoshop, removing the preferences, then re-installing Photoshop. I tried upgrading my display drivers to the most recent version. Restarted the computer. Checked the hard drives to confirm they had free space. Still the same behavior starting up Photoshop.
    It was taking so long to finally become responsive that I thought it was basically frozen. It was only after I ran out of things to try that I left it there & when came back after a while found that it had become functional. Ok, I timed it just now and it took about 3 minutes to start up. I don't know if it was slower before or if it just felt slower. Either way, it's a significant change, and I'd like to get back to how it has been behaving if possible.
    Anyone have any ideas on what else I could look at to resolve this? TIA
    This is with Photoshop CC 2014 on Windows 7 64 bit.

    By bad hair flash screen do you mean the image of the lady in front of the lake? It gets past that point. Basically it's like the interface is totally loaded & ready to go, including a window displaying a file if Photoshop is launched by double-clicking a .psd, for example. But then nothing happens when using the mouse, stylus, or keyboard. I can't even quit the app without resorting to Task Manager.
    I really can't think of anything that changed on this system since it was working "correctly". It's very strange. The last Windows automatic update was at least last week. Things were working fine yesterday, and before that, so I'm not hopeful that restoring to a previous point would change anything.
    I guess I was hoping there was some way to do some diagnostics that might tell me more.

  • Itunes unresponsive on start up

    I run my A/V system through a Mac Mini -- used primariy for downloading tv shows and movies through itunes and streaming shows online. Since I started using iTunes Match, iTunes has become incredibly buggy on this computer -- hanging up on launch nearly every time; frequently during the "checking for available downloads" phase. I'm not sure if it's related to Match or not, but that was about the time it stopped working smoothly. I just get the spinning wheel and have to force quit out. Anybody have any suggestions?

    Disregard,  hooked up to itunes and clicked on summary, selected restore, all is well.

  • Lion unresponsive after starting Time Machine

    I accidentally deleted a file so I started Time Machine to restore it.  The machine seems to be hung.  There is no title bar and no dock.  I can see the application windows and I can move the mouse pointer but I can't click on it.  The machine has been in this state for over 90 minutes.  The screen saver didn't start but I can see dialogs that have popped up.  Unfortunately, I can't click on any of these dialogs.
    How do I get out of this?  Do I have to pull the plug?  How do I prevent this from happening in the future?

    I tapped the power button in anticipation of powering down the whole machine.  This closed Time Machine without powering the machine down.  I closed a bunch of applications and restarted Time Machine.  I restored the file successfully.  I wish I did this two hours ago.

    iphone is unresponsive but when i plug it into the wall charger it comes on saying it needs to be restored but when i plug the iphone into the laptop it isnt comming on or pickin up the iphone so therefor can not restore anyone any ideas

    Clean the dock port very carefully with isopropyll alcohol, especially the pins, which are on top of the midrib. Be very thorough and firm but do not break anything. Let it dry for half a minute at least. Connect to computer, if nothing, clean again.
