Guid Partition or Apple Partition?

Hey there,
my goal is to set up several Hard Drives to be daisy chained for using them to organize Pictures using Lightroom and backing it up. Just one HD I want to be connected via FireWire 800 to the iMac. Before I start adding the Files to the new Drives I have some questions.
What partition map should I choose for that? Guid or Apple Partition Map? I won't be using PCs just Intel Macs.
When I was at the store I told them how I want it to be set up and daisy chained. So I was told to buy Ultra Max Plus from Iomega which have some option about Raid. Actually I don't know anything about Raid.
Is there anything I have to be aware of or to adjust? or can I make the workflow somehow better using Raid?
I want one drive (2TB) to be the master and the other 2 TB the Backup using time machine. Further on I want to daisy chain two more 400 Fire Wire Drives through the Iomegas as Workflow Drives and two more via USB as monthly backup for the Workflow Drives. Do they all need to be GUID or is mixing with Apple Partition ok?
thanks
Dakota

Regarding your intended uses, here's what I suggest:
1 2TB FW800 drive as your main data drive (your working drive)
1 xTB FW800 or USB2 drive for Time Machine (if you really want to use TM; just don't rely on TM as your primary image backup disk)
1 2TB FW800 drive as your primary backup drive
1 xTB FW800 drive as your secondary backup drive (some day you will bless your soul that you had the sense to have a second backup drive with a copy of everything that is on your primary backup drive)
The backup drives should only be connected when you are doing a backup or restore operation. Otherwise they should be unmounted, disconnected & powered off. It is even better if your secondary (or even tertiary) backup drive is kept offsite.
The reason for using all FW800 drives is that if you daisychain a FW400 drive to a FW800 port or FW800 drive it will slow down the entire FW bus to FW400 speeds, thereby doubling all your i/o times. And copying from an external FW800 drive to an external USB drive will be slower than if both drives are daisychained via FW800.
I have extensive libraries of images & video files; this is the setup I finally settled on after years of trial & error and it has served me well. I would not recommend RAID for image storage. If you are doing mid-to-high end video editing & processing then RAID may be of interest.

  • GUID vs. Apple Partition Map

On my new Mac Pro the G-Raid3 will not mount in eSATA. It's fine in 800 Firewire. Out of the box it was set for Apple Partition Map and worked fine on my previous Intel Mac Pro on the same eSATA card.
Suddenly on the new MacPro it doesn't mount. G-Technology told me I have to repartition it as GUID. They said I have to select "Free Space" first and then proceed normally. (It's a 3-TB drive Raided internally.)
Now I checked a Time Machine backup disk I am using on my laptop. That also is Apple Partition. The laptop itself is GUID.
If we're going to keep up to date in an Intel world, is it wise to get all the drives into GUID format?
And what about Free Space? Should that be chosen every time? Why not just OS X Journaled?

Check on TimeMachine specs, I thought it req'd GPT(GUID).
GPT is a better 'modern' partition format and features.
I've never been much of a fan or in favor of multi-interface, handy for home users.
G-Tech's advice. The only way to change a drive to GPT from APM is
click on drive (not volume partition)
change from "current partition" to anything else, ie, "free space"
So that the OPTIONS.... will be available at the bottom.
    Click OPTIONS
change to GUID and click APPLY
Change partitions to what you need. Mac OS Extended (journaling)
    Click Apply.
    Destroys any data.
Things that worked in older Mac Pro may need firmware or driver updates. So your controller might - and please include things like what controller you use.

  • GUID partition table/Apple Partition Map

    Hello,
I just bought recently a Seagate FreeAgent Go for Mac and I'm planning on using it with Time Machine. My question is the following: since the Seagate is partitioned following the GUID partition table, and my mac's internal HD is partitioned according to the Apple Partition Map; would that affect in any way the backups?
    Thx!

    From http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/diskutil .8.html
the +APMFormat specifies that an Apple Partition Map scheme should be used. This is the traditional Apple partitioning scheme used to start up a PowerPC-based Macintosh computer, to use the disk as a non-startup disk with any Mac, or to create a multiplatform compatible startup disk+.

  • GUID vs Apple Partition Table

hot tip: if your AEBS disk doesn't seem to have a name in the airport utility, try formatting it with 'Apple Partition Map' instead of 'GUID'.
    can anyone confirm this?

  • Guid == Apple Partition?

Is GUID partition the same as "Apple Partition"?

Ah! I got my answer, which is "no". When you go to partition the HD under options it explains the types of partitioning. "GUID" is for intel macs or those running 10.4 or later...

  • Disk format GPT and Apple Partition Map  Upgrade questions

I was told that switching to the new computer with snow leopard that I would need to reformat my drives from my G5 to GPT (GUID Partition Table) from Apple Partition Map (APM) to get time machine to work (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2706634&tstart=0)
<<Intel Macs boot to either, but PPC Macs only boot to APM. Intel Mac software (OS) installer only want to install and update to GPT, so if you want to use existing drives to install OS X SL to, you will need to reformat the drive.>>
Disk utility is only giving me Mac OS Extended options, which I thought was my drive format already. So what do I do now? do I erase those drives or what? I'd rather not if I don't need to.

    Hi-
The Erase window only offers the formatting scheme.
The Partition Tab offers the selection of GPT or APM partitioning scheme.
You don't have to partition beyond one partition if you don't want to.
Just make sure GPT is selected and the apply.

  • Can I keep my Lightroom 3 catalog on a PowerMac hard drive with Apple Partition Map

I want to keep my LR3 catalog on a HD in my Power Mac (Intel chip) that I had formatted and used to store my pre-LR3 photo folders on my G5 tower. The 1TB drive is half full, and was formatted as an Apple Partition Map. On swapping the drive into an empty bay in my Power Mac, I can open photos saved on the drive, although I can't seem to rename them. I created my brand new LR3 catalog on the drive as well, but haven't done anything other than import the LR3 catalog I had already created and exported from my MacBook. Other than the drive not being bootable on my Intel Power Mac, are there any risks to managing my LR3 catalog from this drive? Or should I only keep my LR3 catalog on a GUID partitioned drive?
This HD is not of course my startup drive, but only to be used to store my photos.

Oops, I should have used "Mac Pro" to describe my Intel machine, not "Power Mac"

  • "A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required."

    Hi.
Im trying to encrypt an external HDD and it says "A GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioning scheme is required."
Im aware HDD needs a MAC OS Plus (Journaled), I have check disk Information and its formated as MAC OS Plus (Journaled), so why its keep saying to a GPT Partion scheme is required)
Any idea on how to overcome this?
    Thanks!

Issue was with partition map, it was Apple instead GUID as listed in diskutil list

  • Apple Partition Scheme on a MacBook Pro?!

Following one or two odd hangs and crashes with my MacBook Pro, I started to investigate correct partition methods for Intel Macs.
Peculiarly, the internal drive appears to be set to an Apple Partition Scheme, whereas I understand Intel Macs should have their drives partitioned using the GUID scheme.
It's booting okay and for most part is trouble-free, but I'm wondering if I should go through the motions of moving it across to a GUID partition? Is there a downside to using an Apple Partition Scheme on an Intel Mac?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the input. I've just got the one partition, and recently had to set up that partition again because of a fairly severe crash.
In Disk Utility - Partition - Options, there are three partition options:
    1. Apple Partition Scheme (for PowerPC Macs)
    2. GUID Partition Table (for Intel Macs)
    3. Master Boot Record (for Windows)
I didn't select any, but went with whatever Disk Utility defaulted to (which it looks as though was Apple Partition Scheme). I set up the disk by formatting it while in Target Disk Mode and attached to another machine - this may have been the problem.
If there are no known issues running an Intel Mac on this kind of partition, I'll happily keep it as it is, but because it's a 'mission critical' system I really need to sure.
    Thanks again.

  • Can't boot into Windows 8.1 partition after apple store repair

Can't boot into Windows 8.1 partition after apple store repair
I went to the apple store about a week ago to get my screen fixed, and when I get it back I don't have an option to boot into my windows partition. The bootcamp partition is still there, but I can't boot into it. I can still see all of the files on the drive. When I try to boot into windows from the startup disc setting I get "no bootable device — insert boot disk and press any key” on a black screen. I went in for a dead pixel, and the guy at the genius bar ran something on my computer and went into disk utility application. I’m not sure what he was doing, but obviously that’s what messed up my windows partition. How can I be able to boot back into windows? Here's what disk utility looks like on my computer.

  • Partitioned drive with "Apple Partition Map" but installer says that the disk is not bootable

and refuses to install 10.5 on it.
I have an external drive hooked up to an eMac.  The plan is to install 10.5 on the drive, and then put the drive into a G4 powerbook.
I booted the eMac from the 10.5 retail install disk, partitioned the external drive into 1 partition, with the 'Apple Partition Map' option selected in the options.  But when I go to try to install onto the disk, it has a red X and says that the computer can not boot off of the device so it refuses to install.
Can anybody tell me what step(s) I missed?

The choice I selected was "Mac OS extended (Journaled)" which I think is HFS+journaled -- or at least none of the other choices on the pull-down looked remotely correct.

  • GUID and Re-Formatting Partition Scheme

nerowolfe (or anyone else who cares to offer advice):
Excellent information for the rest of us. I, too, have checked and my backup is NOT partitioned in GUID format. I have just opened Disk Utility and have tried to select GUID in "Options," then "Partition" on the main menu for my external HD volume, but when I do select "Partition," it comes up with the error "Partition Failed with Error: Could Not Unmount Disk."
I'm not super familiar with backing up at all, let alone these different formats, and I'm not too familiar with Disk Utility, either. I backup using SuperDuper, and that's about all I know to do. If you wouldn't mind, can you please offer your advice on this situation? I bought Leopard on Friday but have not yet installed due to all of the complains in this forum. I want to be sure I have a bootable backup.
    Thanks very much in advance!

A clone is an exact copy of your system. When you boot to a cloned drive it will look exactly like your system, Desktop and all, and can run your machine sans hard drive. I use a different background on mine so I can tell the difference.
A backup is just that, you have copies of everything but not in any sequence or format that would allow driving your machine should you have a hard drive failure.
SuperDuper is famous for cloning bootable external drives, and hopefully you let it do its thing, should your external allow it.

  • How to set up Apple Partition Map not to be a Master Boot Record

    Hi.
In order to copy Leopard install disk to a flash drive I need format the 8 G Cruzer (on which the U3 was removed) to set up Apple Partition Map not to be a Master Boot Record to be bootable on my Quicksilver G4. I never used partitioning before, step by step please.
    W.W.

    Hi, motsteve -
Forget booting USB on any G4
USB booting is possible on all G4s and later models starting with the G4 (AGP) models, per -
Article #58430 - USB Info and Benefits of Dual-Channel USB
I think I read somewhere (couldn't find it just now) that the earlier versions of OSX are not USB bootable, so booting to USB on G4s might need to be by using OS 9.
I've never tried USB booting. However, I have made a bootable Zip100 disk for my G4/500 (AGP), using its internal Zip drive. Did it just to see if it would work - it does. There's a fair amount of room left over on the 100MB disk, too.
Intel-based machines are also USB bootable, per this article -
