Guidance on Aperture and Flickr Integration

Can anyone point me to anything that advises on the correct way to use the synchronisation feature. I just can't get this to work consistently; my Flickr folder in Aperture does not match the set in Flickr.
As seen on Flickr, I routinely get duplication whilst other photos go missing. I only get duplication in the Aperture album.
I'm on the verge of giving up on it, which isn't a big deal, but this kind of flakiness does make me doubt the solidity of the application in general. I'd much rather think that I've just misunderstood something.

i had a set in Flickr that is where i place 1 photo a day for all 365 days this year. i have been using my iPhone 4 to upload photos to Flickr, but i had synced this set to Aperture. today i used my regular camera and edited the photo in Aperture and dragged it to the Flickr set (in Aperture). when i went to Flickr, the new photo was there, but 3 previous photos were now listed as being newer than the photo i just added. my 3 previous photos that had 10 - 20 views had been removed and replaced with the same photo without the tags, without the titles, without the views, and without correct date for when the photos were taken. i had to spend a lot of time in Flickr trying to correct things and guessing the dates taken. not fun. and i really don't like losing the view count as i take great pride in that.
i was pretty excited to upgrade to Aperture, but version 3.0 is disappointing if it's going to screw up my hard work.

  • Aperture and Flickr Export Problems - Missing Files

I have a MacPro, Aperture 3, and Flickr Pro account. I was planning on using Flickr as an online storage/back-up option for lower-res files. However, whenever I try to upload a project to Flickr files always seem to drop off.
For example, if I export a project with 446 files in it, when it gets to Flickr it'll say I only have 403 images. Likewise if I try a smaller project (e.g., 426 -> 404).
Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what is the cause of this problem?
Also, any way to remove that 500 upload limit per project to Flickr? Flickr itself does not limit the number of photos you can store in a set.
    Thanks!

  • Aperture and Flickr sync

I sync nearly every project in Aperture with Flickr. Now I would like to check which photos I have synced and which not, but I can not find the richt selection in Aperture. Can anybody help me?

Having exactly the same problem. My guess is that Aperture sync is broken. The Flickr App behaves exactly the same and can't sort out the right date stamp. In my experience Aperture only sometimes messes up the tags and names, but always the time stamp, even after several resyncs.

  • Aperture and Flickr

I asked this question before, but I think I was not specific enough.
When you publish i.e. a project to Flickr a set is created in Flickr and that set is also shown in the Aperture Library. When you look at the metadat of a photo, you can she under "sharing" that it is published to Flickr, so it looks like that this information is stored in the metadata.
What I would like to do is a search in my whole aperture library for photos that are (or are not) published to Flickr, but I cannot find the specific field in the search criteria. Is this missing, or am I overlooking something?

  • Cannot get Aperture to set up Flickr integration

I've just recent bought Aperture and set up a Flickr account. In Aperture, when I click on the Flickr button, or try to add Flickr integration in the preferences, it tells me that I have to allow Aperture to access my Flickr account to set things up. When I click Set Up, it takes me to the Flickr login screen, and I sign in and that's it, nothing happens. It never does anything other than this and I've searched for answers, but can't find any. Anyone? Thanks.

    Sculley,
You have to set up your Flickr account to accept requests (and pictures) from Aperture. After you sign in to FLickr, you should see a screen that asks you to authorize Aperture to access your FLickr account. It won't be the normal photostream screen.
I did not set up my Flickr access the way you did (by clicking the Flickr button first), so I'm not sure what went wrong there for you.
Try setting up your Flickr account by using the "Web" tab of the Preferences and hit the "+" button to connect to Flickr.

  • Facebook and Flickr with Aperture on Macbook Pro

I have set up both a Facebook and Flickr account in Aperture.  They work great and like how easy they are to use.  I do have a problem though.
After using my Macbook, I close the screen and leave it.  When I come back and open the screen, sometimes Aperture gives me an error that says:
There was a problem connecting to Facebook.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -1.)
After clearing the message it comes back in an endless loop.  Am I doing something wrong?  Should I exit Aperture before closing the screen evertime?  How can I clear this error without killing the application?
    Thanks.
    Mike T4

This is not much help, but I don't think it's an infinitely loop. I suspect the number of times you get the message is related to the number of flickr sets you have in Aperture. If you are patient, and click the OK button enough times, it will go away.
I really don't like force quitting - especially Aperture. I have always been able to "outlast" Aperture by clicking the OK button enough times.

  • Aperture 3 and Flickr sync problems

    Hi!
I started using Aperture 3 recently and made the mistake of authorizing Aperture to sync with Flickr.  I hate it!  Now I want to deauthorize it somehow but don't know where or how?  I've read horror stories that all of my Flickr photos will be deleted from Flickr if I deauthorize, but none of my Flickr photos were uploaded from Aperture, they were already in Flickr and were automatically synced to Aperture once I authorized it.  Now that I realize I've made a mistake I want to get out, but how?
    TIA!
    Debbie

I have been using the sync feature between my Aperture library and Facebook and Flickr for 6 months and I finally gave up on it yesterday.
As an example of what I usually go through, I uploaded 159 photos to my flickr account this past weekend, then added some captions/descriptions/tags etc. on flickr (was that a mistake?). Then Aperture promptly undid some my work at the next synchonization... I don't want photos on my stream named DSC_6788.jpg, etc.  Thing is, Aperture undoes some of what I do on Flickr but not all.  There's no rhyme, reason, or pattern to it.  If I use Aperture to add tags (by entering keywords in the right field), even those partially disappear after the next sync.
Another maddening thing is that it makes the filename the caption on Facebook albums.  I/e/. if, on Facebook, I added a desctiptive caption on a picture such as "Mommy and Daddy making out under the Eiffel Tower" (totally a made up example), then next time a synch happens, the caption would be "DSC_8646.jpg."  Gee, thanks for the help, Aperture.
For 6 months I have lived in fear of opening up Aperture.  Will the sync mess up what I've published online?
There should be option to not have Aperture override what you do on flickr (and Facebook).  I am a strong believer in the "Publish and Forget" model for places like Flickr and Facebook, not the sync model.
For now, it's back to export to a folder and upload via the uploader.

  • Aperture and iPhoto 08 integration problems

    Hi.
I just bought Leopard and iLife 08. I read in an article (see link below) a great way to integrate pictures from your Aperture library into the iPhoto library:
    - Setup Aperture to share previews with iLife
    - Setup iPhoto to not copy items into the iPhoto library
    - Import photos from Aperture into iPhoto by using the 'Show Aperture library' feature
Photos from Aperture (actually the previews from Aperture) are now in your iPhoto library. The great thing about this is that the Aperture previews are referenced so when you make changes to the photos in Aperture the changes become visible in iPhoto.
However, I have discovered two problems until now with this integration:
    1. When I make a change to a photo in Aperture the change is not visible in the iPhoto preview (or what it is). But when I double-click on the preview in iPhoto the full image has the change I made in Aperture.
    2. Keywords from Aperture also gets imported into iPhoto. However, some of my photos have more than one keyword in Aperture and when imported into iPhoto some of the photos have all keywords and some only have one of the keywords they have in Aperture.
Is there anybody out there having the same problems and even better a solution?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The great thing about this is that the Aperture previews are referenced so when you make changes to the photos in Aperture the changes become visible in iPhoto.
Well as you can see, that's not actually true. If you change the pics via Aperture there is no way for iPhoto to know about this change, and therefore no way that it will then update your thumbnail in iPhoto. I guess this integration is intended for after you've finished processing your pics.

  • New to Apple and Aperture-I am surprised at the lack of integration between Aperture and applications as iMovie.

Aperture slideshow is terrible in terms of entering any text on a photo.  It appears that you have to export the photos from Aperture to the desktop to import the photos to iMovie to be able to add quite good text to individual photos. While I am new to the Apple system (I am quite knowledgable in Windows), I am surprised that iMovie cannot import an Album or a Project from Aperture.  It does not appears possible to to copy and paste from Aperture to the project created in iMovie without exporting to the desktop.  This seems like a step backwards.
Since I come from Windows I will be importing most of my photos into Lightroom3 and doing  most of my work.  Yet, there are features in Aperture that I like and will probably use both for the time being.  I am using Aperture 3 and iLife11.  New Macbook Pro

I read the manuals and watched the tutorials on the Apple web site as well as F1 in Aperture and never saw a reference to using Windows menu to list photos in iMovie.  I check this and it does seem to work.  however, you must admit that the procedure for adding text on a photo is limited as compare to iMovie.  Maybe, it is because I want to add text to a photo for posting on Mobileme or other photo posting sites so friends can view the photos in a slideshow or one by one.
I assume that you can answer this question. Since I was exporting photos to the desktop so I could import them in iMovie, if I delete the folder on the desktop will they disappear form the project in iMovie?  Since I do not like a lot of folders on the desktop can I move them to the Pictures folder and not loose the project links in iMovie?

  • Aperture and iPhoto library integration.

    So here is my predicament:-
I'm new to Aperture but have more than enough experience in iPhoto. I'm 99% sure that I'm just missing something small so hopefully this wont be a hard question to answer.
I tend to use iPhoto as a photo management program as I love the way it looks and feels; especially the new version as part of iLife '11. Now I understand you can import your iPhoto library into Aperture HOWEVER is it possible to then update the Aperture library later on down the track without re-cataloguing (think thats the best way to put it) the iPhoto library all together?

Terrence, sounds like you have your brain wrapped around aperture quite well. I do not. So please forgive me if this question is redundant. Sometimes you just have to ask in your own words, if you know what I mean. I am about to download Aperture's 30 day trial.
In essence, iPhoto and Aperture cannot share a library, but they can access each other's libraries? Can you just preview iPhoto's library from within Aperture and vice-versa without having to import the photos? And if you import your existing iPhoto library into Aperture you then have two copies of each photo, one in Aperture and one in iPhoto, thus doubling the space on the HDD that photos are taking up?
I do understand the changes made in one program cannot be viewed in another.
Thank you for taking time to share your expertise with us!

  • Aperture and other Pro Applications ( Final Cut, Motion, DVD Studio Pro )

    Hi folks,
I have bought Final Cut Studio a while back, and have been working with all the tools for a while now ( FCP, Motion and DVD Studio Pro ). Recently I also switched to Aperture to manage / capture / organise my digital photographs ( previously I used iPhoto ).
Now I was wondering how I could use the pictures from my Aperture library in Motion or DVD Studio Pro. When I look at the file Browser, I can easily use some iPhoto pictures, but apparently I can't seem to find anything for Aperture.
What I would like to do is use some pictures from Aperture in a Motion project and also include an Aperture album in DVD Studio as a SlideShow.
What would be the best way to do this ? Do I have to export the pictures I want to use ? Or am I missing something ?
    Regards,
    Stefaan

    Stefaan,
Unfortunately, that type of integration between the Pro Apps is not there (yet). It would definitely be a nice feature to have. We should all send feedback to Apple asking for this feature. For now, you will need to export photos for use in these other apps.
Along the same lines, I would also like to see integration with Aperture and the "iLife" programs. Since Aperture will likely replace iPhoto for at least some of us, it would be nice to be able to use Aperture photos in these apps as well.

  • IPhoto/Aperture 1.5 Integration questions

Aperture 1.5 allows you to keep iPhoto pictures where they are with a "reference" from Aperture.
But since I upgraded to Aperture 1.5, I have the opposite problem -- how do I keep my pictures in Aperture but have iPhoto reference them? With previous versions of Aperture I already copied in all my iPhoto pictures and subsequently got rid of my iPhoto library (to save space).
However, I would like to use iPhoto for its better Slideshow capabilities and FrontRow integration.
    So here are some questions:
[1] Should I just set preference in iPhoto to not "Copy files to iPhoto Library Folder" and import the entire Aperture library?
[2] Will it copy the albums from Aperture intact?
[3] How much additional disk space (if any) will this use up?
[4] What is the signifcance of setting up previews in Aperture (which I have done)?
[5] In iPhoto I see that there is File>Show Aperture Library... where I can see thumbnails of my Aperture pictures. What else is this used for? (i.e. can I import pictures using this feature?)
[6] If, subsequent to import, I add to the Aperture libary, will that automatically synchronize with the iPhoto library, or do I have to iPhoto-import the entire Aperture library every time new photos are added to the Aperture library?
    iMac 17 1.25 GHz; iMac 20 Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

[1] Should I just set preference in iPhoto to
not "Copy files to iPhoto Library Folder" and
    import the entire Aperture library?
[2] Will it copy the albums from Aperture intact?
This will work if your Aperture library's masters are stored by reference. However, it will only copy the masters, not an album structure. It won't copy your adjustments either. Just the masters.
[3] How much additional disk space (if any) will this
    use up?
iPhoto will build JPEGs for each master image, so you will use some disk space.
[4] What is the signifcance of setting up previews in
    Aperture (which I have done)?
Previews will allow you to browse your Aperture library in iPhoto. You can decide what images are made available to iPhoto. These are the versions, not the masters, so adjustments made in Aperture will be seen by iPhoto (as opposed to importing the masters).
[5] In iPhoto I see that there is File>Show Aperture
Library... where I can see thumbnails of my Aperture
pictures. What else is this used for? (i.e. can I
    import pictures using this feature?)
You can drag images from that window into iPhoto, which will import the JPEG previews so you can use them in slideshows, etc.
[6] If, subsequent to import, I add to the Aperture
libary, will that automatically synchronize with the
iPhoto library, or do I have to iPhoto-import the
entire Aperture library every time new photos are
    added to the Aperture library?
There isn't any automatic synchronization, but I think the following is a good approach:
    1) When importing your masters into Aperture, don't have Aperture copy them from the CF card into the library. Instead give it a folder to copy them to. In addition, specify a sub folder that is "Project Name". By doing that, your import will be separate from other imports.
    2) Make sure iPhoto is set to reference images not copy them into the library.
    3) Then, when you want to synchronize with iPhoto, just drag the directories containing the projects that you want synchronized directly to iPhoto.

  • Flickr integration with Front Row?

I have what I think is the latest version of Front Row (2.2.1, 314). I've seen some conflicting hearsay on the various web forums that there is a way to view flickr photos within Front Row. But I don't see that functionality in Front Row.
Anyone know of a Flickr plugin for Front Row? I'm aware of the Understudy plugin that allows adding YouTube and Hulu feeds, but I couldn't seem to add a flickr feed using that plugin. I'd love to view flickr photos via front row on my old powerbook, which I have set up as a media center attached to my HDTV.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. I had heard of the Media Central software, but I don't really want to pay ~$40 for a piece of software just to get the Flickr integration I'm after. Also, as you say, I suspect it won't run very well on my powerbook G4 (1.67 GHz with 1GB of RAM), which is already so taxed by driving my 1080p HDTV that YouTube and HULU videos are essentially unwatchable. I'm mainly using this powerbook like an apple TV to view my family photos and itunes library and on-board movies on my HDTV, all of which works great, but I was hoping to get quick access to flickr as well. I will probably get an Apple TV once Apple upgrades the hardware (hopefully some time in the next year?), but since I have my old powerbook G4 just sitting around for now I thought I'd get as much functionality as possible from it, without spending any significant amount of $. So far all I've spent is $3 on iphone apps to control the mac from the couch ( AirMouse and Rowmote), and $8 on an a headphone-RCA audio cable.
I was hoping someone knew about a FrontRow plugin that could duplicate the Apple TV Flickr integration.
I was also a bit confused by the apparently incorrect section on wikipedia, which claimed that the most recent version of Front Row had Flickr integration. Shouldn't be surprising that wikipedia is wrong sometimes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FrontRow(software)

  • Aperture and Not IPhoto

    Hi Folks,
I have been looking at Iweb as an easy way to update my web site. However from reading posts its clear that i can only use photos stored in Iphoto Libaray.
How do i use photos that are stored in my Aperture Library file instead, or do i need to create the photos i need on the web in iphoto only
    Thanks

    Hi,
My personal experience is that I can use photos from anywhere. I just drag and drop.
I use photos on my desktop that have never been run thru iPhoto. I use photos I have in an app called Lightroom. I also use photos on occassion that I get from the web and just drop them into iweb. Works fine for me. Of course I also use iPhoto for some photos too.
I am interested in using Aperture...but cannot till I update my computer system sometime early next year. Anyway...I am interested to know if you still cannot use Aperture to drag and drop. Mac is so integrated and all the apps work well together I would think it would work.
If you cannot PUSH the photos from within Aperture to iweb or PULL the photos from within iweb.....just try and drag and drop.
If you have iPhoto and want this.....can you drop your Aperture pics into iphoto to push or pull into iWeb?
Good luck...please let me know because I am very interested in using Aperture and your results.

  • Aperture and/or iPhoto ??

After a recent photo shoot I realized that I finally needed to update my photography workflow.
Currently I import pictures from my Rebel XT directly into iPhoto 09, I then make an album out of those pictures, go through my selection process of rejecting the majority of pictures, and then do any post processing in PhotoShop CS3 with the pictures that made the cut. This approach works but I find it cumbersome importing the images from PhotoShop once I have made adjustments. Ideally I would do it all in one application, which prompted me to purchase Aperture 2, as iPhoto's editing options are not robust enough for my needs.
Tomorrow I will be installing Aperture and now I am left with the question of whether I should use Aperture as the application to manage my quickly growing picture library (currently around 10k) or if I should stick with iPhoto to handle the entire library and just use Aperture to do work on specific albums that post processing is required on.
Many pictures I have taken and will take will never require post processing (ie pictures from a point and shoot) but I want one place where I can at least view all of the pictures in my collection (from point and shoots as well as SLR's).
Should I keep iPhoto as my library organizer or should I let Aperture handle everything? What would/do you do??
Thank you in advance for any insight on this!

Everyones responses have been very insightful, thank you.
I previously did not want to dirty up my original question by bringing up iPhoto exclusive functionality such as Faces, Places, Facebook/Flckr/etc integration; but I am glad it has come up.
When the aforementioned iPhoto specific features were first announced, my initial reaction was that this new functionality would be inherited in the next version of Aperture, after a little thought though I am not so confident that will be the case.
The responses to my initial question were unanimous that I should switch to Aperture to be my sole picture library management solution, prompting me to draw the conclusion that Aperture is the pro version of iPhoto rather that an application that works in tandem with it. Is it then appropriate for me to draw the conclusion that the aforementioned iPhoto exclusive functionality is considered more "home" than "pro" and therefore would not be migrated up to Aperture?
I guess I am making this difficult because I wish to maintain one library containing "home"(point and shoot) and "pro" (SLR / post processing) pictures, without loosing the functionality appropriate for each category. I understand that a "home" user may never care about the editing tools available in Aperture and that a "pro" user may never care about tagging peoples faces, but I believe there is a category of user that will sometimes want to do both.
When it comes down to it, I do not believe the iPhoto exclusive features will be enough to keep me from moving my entire library to Aperture, and hopefully some of those features will end up being inherited in an update someday.
I would love to hear everyones thoughts on this but understand if this thread has lost it's appeal. Thank you again for the previous responses.
