Guide for Selecting a Power Supply

Mod may want to make this a STICKY.
Here's a general guide on how to select a PSU for your HP desktop.  The majority of standard ATX powersupply (PSU) should fit inside an HP case.  The exception would be a slim line case or the esoteric Blackbird.
Look for an 80+ certification on the PSU to save electricity.  A PC will normally idle or run at low load 75% of the time.  Therefore, look for a PSU that's more efficient in the 50-90W range.  An 80+ 350W PSU reaches the 80% efficiency level at 70W output (20% of rated output).  The output must be greater than 140W to achieve the same level of efficiency from an equivalent 80+ 700W PSU.  So picking a PSU that is rated 25% higher than the maximum ACTUAL load of the rig will save you more $ on electricity.
A modern PSU is designed to achieve peak efficiency between 20 and 80% of the rated output.  Running a PSU above the 80% load level will result in excessive heat, noise, and premature failure.
An Nvidia rig with GeForce GTX 280 (1024MB on board RAM) will draw about 350W max from the wall.  If we factor in the efficiency of a 80+ PSU, then the actual load on the PSU is only 280W (350 x 0.80).  To calculate the required PSU, multiply the actual load by 1.25 (25% margin).  In this case we only need a 350W PSU (280 x 1.25) to run this GPU.
Let's apply what we know to a Radeon HD 4870 (512MB on board RAM) rig.  290W max from the wall.  Actual load is 290W x 0.80 or 230W.  Now apply the 25% margin rule and we arrive at a PSU requirement of 290W (230W x 1.25).  Even if we apply a 50% safety margin, the power requirement is still under 350W (230W x 1.50).
There is no need to overspec the PSU by 50% unless you run your PC at full load 24/7.  Keep in mind that there is a huge variation in PSU quality and rating.  A cheap 500W PSU may not be able to deliver as much power as a quality 350W.  Antec Earthwatts/NeoPower/TruePower, Corsair, and Seasonic are quality units widely available at many US retailers.
Many high-end PSUs will need additional power from the PSU in the form of one or two 6/8 pin GPU power plug.  You can purchase an adaptor to convert a 4-pin molex to 6-pin GPU power plug.

Found a review of the Corsair 400W (Seasonic-built power supply) that I've been recommending on this forum.  This ATX power supply should fit inside most HP case (minus Slimline).  It has ample power to drive a modern quad core plus Radeon 4870 or GTX280 video card.
At 100% load, we see a 2.5% drop in the +12VDC rail, which is still within spec and does not affect the performance of any component inside the PC.  +12VDC regulation at 82% load is a superb 0.5% with 45C case temperature.  Note that the power output and efficiency decrease with higher temperature.
Cheap power supplies are rated at 25C.  When these units are subjected to higher case temperature, the output can drop 10-20%.
Again, we discover the sweet spot of a good PSU is 20-80%.  A good 400W PSU is more than adequate for many PC users.  This Corsair is only $30 after a $10 rebate.  That's a great price for a quality/quiet PSU that won't put a huge dent in your wallet.

I'm running Windows 7. Installed "Power Manager" via System Update 4.0 last night (10/23/2009). Getting this error when hitting FN+F3.
You are not authorized to display the panel for selecting a power plan.
Furthermore, I'm unable to see any of the default power schemes. Finally, I created two new power schemes, neither of them display for selection.
Any one else experiencing this issue?!?!?

  • Looking for Apple TV power supply - any ideas?

    Hi folks,
My out of warranty Apple TV has an obvious power supply problem (it's totally dead, no power up whatsoever).
There are a few websites that have tutorials on replacing the power supply (or hard drive, etc...).
The problem is I can't find a place to purchase a replacement power supply.
    It's a Delta Electronics ADP-36BF, Apple part # 614-0395 (http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.com/igi/HGslJDZeqPnKlFVD.huge)
Any ideas on where to find one?
If I can't get it myself to replace it, I'll probably just wait for the Boxee Box to replace it.
    Thanks.

I'm in the exact same boat -- I've looked everywhere and can't find anything. I've even called Delta Electronics about the part and they said they can only sell them to Apple. If you find anything out please let me know! Thanks.

  • IMAC 27" goes black, won't run or boot up for hours. Power supply?

and then suddenly be able to boot. But when you shut it back down, it won't boot again. Is this a power supply issue? I've cleaned it and tried multiple power outlets around my house, but the only cure seems to be to sit for a few hours. I use it with a Thunderbolt monitor on the side, but it doesn't seem to make any difference whether it's part of the equation or not.

Hello ... I start to have the exactly same issue with my 21" after a shutdown or sleep mode ... ... I have to wait some time until I can boot again. If I try to boot after 5m or so I can ear the Hard drive and fans but it doesn't start (no screen, no startup sound or keyboard access). Any sugestion?
    Thanks in advanced,

  • Labview drivers for sorensen dlm power supply

I am looking for a LabVIEW driver for a Sorensen DLM 150-4 power supply.  I am using ethernet to communicate with it.  Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

Sorensen probably changed the firmware to more compliant with LXI specs. It's nice that they finally adopted SCPI but it's too bad they didn't maintain backward compatability to their older models. I wonder what they are telling their customers with an installed base of the GPIB instruments that might want to buy the new model. In theory, I suppose you could use the existing driver as a starting point and replace the old commands with the SCPI ones. I only have GPIB models so I can't be of much help there. Have you checked with Sorensen to see if they have a new driver? If you do create a new driver, please post it so others can benefit.

  • Want references for using ATX power supply with MDD.

There are references all over the place to adapting an ATX power supply for a MDD/FW800. But it would be nice to have links to as many useful ones as possible in one thread -- this one -- without too much superfluous verbiage.
Please post links with brief descriptive comments or, if you have some hard information that's not easily linked to, please post it as concisely as possible. Hopefully, the resulting thread will be useful to many people, and not just to me.

  • Workaround for bug (ACPI, Power supply)

    Hi.
I'm using Arch on Samsung 530U and there is bug in handling with power supply. It is reported for example here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/971061, https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1027798 etc.
Samsung's replies on my urgents to fix it are: "Use windows..."
In short - problem is that system remember if the battery is charging/discharging only at boot (I guess when acpi starts) and since than it is frozen. But the recognition of pluging/unpluging power supply works fine.
Here is what is does, when cable was plugged at start:
Battery is fully charged and adapter is connected:
    ~$ acpi -V
    Battery 0: Unknown, 80%
Battery 0: design capacity 6100 mAh, last full capacity 6100 mAh = 100%
    Adapter 0: on-line
    ~$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/status
    Unknown
    ~$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/ADP1/online
    1
    When the adapter is disconnected:
Battery 0: Charging, 80%, charging at zero rate - will never fully charge.
Battery 0: design capacity 6100 mAh, last full capacity 6100 mAh = 100%
    Adapter 0: off-line
    ~$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/status
    Charging
    ~$ cat /sys/class/power_supply/ADP1/online
    0
You can see that adapter is recognized well, but the battery still "thinks" it has been charging. I can't see how much time is remaining etc.
When I manually try 'sudo echo "Discharging" >> /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/status' I get permission denied.
    Any ideas or workaround?
    Thanks

  • VI for Walker Scientific Power Supply Control PSC 4

I am inneed of the VI for the captioned instrument.  i have searched the instrument Drive in NI website and also tried to google it. I couldn't find. Is there anyone using the same and if so could you please let me know how to get the same?

    Hi Jayakumar,
I just glanced through with the manual and I noticed that the instrument can be controlled with RS 232 (Serial) and IEEE 488 (GPIB). The command set is well documented, I do not think you need to make an instrument driverfor your device (if you are tight with time constraint). You can select one of the protocol RS 232 or IEEE 488 and try to create a program that suits your project/work. For a simple one, you can refer to the examples, (RS 232) Basic Serial Write and Read.vi and (IEEE 488) GPIB-VISA.vi, connect your instrument with either protocol and start sending the command set. If the simple test works, then you can develop more complicated program.
PS: You can find the examples at NI Example Finder (Help>>Find Examples...) then Hardware Input and Output>>Serial and Hardware Input and Output>>GPIB.
    Hope that helps!

  • Anyone have a model or circuit for a switched power supply?

Teach in a County College and would like to include this topic in one of the electronics courses.  Help is appreciated.
    Steve

Thank you for your help Yi.  Im using 10.0.144.  Using the "Save As" function, I modified the circuit from the Averaged Model Current Mode boost to create the "Trial_Boost_CM" file.  (The path is "samples/SMPS Circuits/Average Analysis")  I've described the extent of my modifications with text on the schematic.  I've been able to successfully simulate it with several "unknown parameters" warnings in the audit log
Using the same method, I created the "Trial_Buck_CM" file and modified it as noted on that schematic.  I've also been successful (with similar warning) simulating it.
Finally, I created a third file, "Trial_MultipleConverter" from the "Trial_Boost_CM" via the "Save As" function.  I added a second sheet and pasted the circuit from the "Trial_Buck_CM". When this combined circuit is simulated, the error message "...duplicated subcircuit name ...." as I mentioned previously occurs.
The error message does not appear when I delete either or both (naturally) of the CCM models.  Once I place the model again yields the same result.
This also occurs if you place the models within separate Hiearchial blocks.
    What am I doing wrong?

  • Where can I buy a replacement power supply (model VP-09500018-000) for my 1st generation Time Capsule?

My 1st Time Capsule no longer powers on!  It was making noises for a while before it would no longer keep power / turn on!   I have taken the time capsule apart and could easily replace the power supply if I knew where to buy it   Can anyone lead me in the right direction?
    Thank you!

Apple do not supply it as a part.
You can repair the existing supply.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/apple-time-capsule-repair-type2
Plenty of people sell the caps set on ebay. Cheaper if you have a good electronics store handy but they need to be top quality low esr capacitors.
Substitute a different kind of power supply.
I definitely believe in using external power supply for this job. This is my own website so disclaimer.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
Or some original type are available on ebay. Just search for "Time Capsule power supply"
Or look at what a whole second hand TC will cost you.. a Gen3 or Gen4 can be a better proposition than repairing a dead Gen1.
You can also do a half repair.. By that I mean you only need one voltage to run the TC.. a single 5v 3A power supply plugged into the TC board socket or soldered directly in.. will give you an airport extreme Gen2 for $10. Plug the hard drive in by USB.. or use a bit of careful hacking and use a SATA cable to the post on the board and use a 2TB or even 3TB esata case.
You can also still buy a Cisco dual voltage supply on ebay.. but the wiring of it is a bit rough.
