Guide Layer

I have a layer used only for audio. For testing purposes, I
wanted to speed up publishing by omitting the audio layer. I simply
turned it into a guide layer. Flash isn't suppose to export content
on guide layers, but yet Flash is still publishes the audio layer.
Why isn't audio being excluded from my published file?

Are you using CS3? If so simply turn off the visibility of
the layer. This is a new CS3 feature
(located in Publish settings).
No longer do we have to convert layers to Guide layers to
omit them from publish.

  • Guide layer stops working when I change a movieClip

    Hey all,
So I have a few things moving along a common guide layer.
There are 7 objects, and depending on what is happening on screen,
i want to have some of the objects appear and disappear. I have all
of the objects _alpha set to 0, but when something triggers it, I
change a few of them to _alpha=100. The problem is that, at that
point, they stop moving along the guide. I know they move because
they will be halfway across the screen, but then stop moving
immediately after I call the change in _alpha. Any ideas? Can you
not change the properties of a movieClip while it is moving on the
    guide? Thanks...

Be sure to change the symbol to a button in both the library and in the properties panel.  If you only change it in the properties panel, the tmeline will not change.

  • Adding vector mask as guide layer?

I have a template that uses a vector mask as one of the layers to line up images. What I need to do is have the vector mask serve as a guide layer so when I go to export it does not appear on export. Is this possible?

No its not. You can Action or script a deleting of your "Guide" layer before you export or Save the file. Probably your best option

  • Automatically add guides to guide layer

Hi, is there a way to make any guides I create automatically go into a guide layer? the main reason for this is that I always forget to highlight the guides layer when drawing guides and it's also extra clicking, and I end up with loads of guides clogging up the other layers. And I'd have thought that the program could easily deal with it. Failing that, is there a way to select all the guides so I can move them all in one go?
    Cheers,
    Jarrick

    > is there a way to make any guides I create automatically go into a guide layer?
    No.
    > is there a way to select all the guides so I can move them all in one go?
Select one guide, then Select > Same Stroke Color, then switch to your guides layer and paste (making sure "Paste Remembers Layers" is not checked in the Layers palette).

  • Rectangles can't be moved from guides layer

Using Illustrator CS5 on Mac: When I draw a rectangle it shows up on the guides layer. When I try to move it to the foreground layer it reverts, without warning, back to the guides layer. I need the rectangle to be used as a clipping mask, so it has to be on the foreground (artwork) layer.
    Thanks for any help.

Scott's right, there ain't no guide layer in Illie.
Never has been, hopefully never will be, although it can occasionally be handy to make one.
I think you must be accidentally hitting a key combination that converts paths to guides.
Illie's default for doing that is Cmd+5.
The default keystroke for Object > Arrange > Bring to Front is Cmd+Shift+]. Is ] somewhere near 5 on your keyboard?
Maybe you should take a look at Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts.

  • Motion guide for a mask?

Am I missing something obvious or is it not possible to apply
a motion guide layer (with a path) to a mask (mc or graphic
    instance) or masked object?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Of course the ideal way around this would be to move the mask
with AS, but my scripting ability is not -= to the task just yet. I
have the masks moving straight along _x and _y okay w. script but
I'd like to be floating them around the stage with more expression.
    thanks

Convert your mask layer into movie clip than place in on
timeline to give it the Motion
Guide. In flash you can't apply two options to single layer,
either mask or guide, not both.
Using action script is easy when come to mask but this will
    as well require movie clips
as you need use movie clip to define the target and the mask.
Say, motion guide is in movie clip call "guide" and mask in
    movie clip call "mask", all
you need is place that on timeline frame:
    guide.setMask(mask);

  • How to use imported paths from Photoshop/Illustrator as motion guides

    Hi folks,
I've been raking the internet with no success for an answer to my question, but I've had no luck so far.
What I'm hoping to achieve animation wise is to have a shape move around a set path that was created in Photoshop. The reason being, it's a very specific shape (near enough a square but with curved corners and a chunk missing out of one of the sides), and I used the paths feature in Photoshop to create it and stroke the path for the smoothest possible effect. What I'd ideally like to do is import the same path I used to create the shape into Flash Professional CS6 and then use that same path to guide a small symbol around the edge of the square.
So far, I've worked out how to apply motion to a symbol through basic tweens, and then I can draw out a line using the pencil tool and apply that to the tween so it follows the pencil line instead of just going from point A to point B. The problem is, this looks awful...I'm not good enough with a mouse to create absolutely perfect shapes freehand, so I just want to be able to use the Photoshop path as my motion guide instead of having to make another one from scratch.
I've looked around for various importing methods, the most success I've had is exporting the paths to an Illustrator file, and then importing the Illustrator file into Flash directly. However, I have NO idea where these paths go when they're imported, or how to access them. If I import them to the stage, they seemingly disappear before I've even seen them, and if I import them to the library they just aren't there.
I could also do with a brief description of how paths work in Flash - I'm familiar with the Photoshop layout, what with the paths appearing in a panel next to the layers one (makes perfect sense to me, as you can just switch between the two panels to view whatever you want). I just don't understand how they work in Flash and what I should be looking for....
Many thanks in advance for any help!
    Todd

I had a play around with some variations of this. What I can't grasp is why Flash won't recognise my shape layer as a motion path. I've tried breaking it down, that doesn't work... I traced it narrowly in Photoshop and imported it as a thin line with a gap (so essentially a line with two ends), and it comes into Flash as a bitmap or something of that sort. I found an option that traces the bitmap, and appears to convert it into a shape layer...I've managed to find the optimal settings so the line is joined all the way through apart from the start and end points. The only thing is, Flash seems to not even notice this as a guide layer when I apply it to the symbol I'm trying to animate. It just doesn't even notice it's there. The object moves straight from point A to point B in a straight line, the guide layer does nothing to adjust the motion... Is it not possible for the traced line to act as a motion guide? It's a shape, it is a single line with a start point and an end point, and there are no other instances of anything else in the layer - just the line and nothing else.
This seems way more difficult than it should be...I'm sure Adobe could have integrated a MUCH easier system for importing paths from Photoshop that actually exist in Flash rather than disappearing into some abyss instead!
Here is a screenshot of what I'm working with: http://gyazo.com/4c1046767e1ee8bf99f65751b9ba81b8
The long black oval is the shape I'm trying to animate. I've tried applying tweens to it while it's in shape form and while it's in every different symbol form, all to no avail.
The black line is what I'm trying to use as the guide. Having looked online, people seem to be able to just use the "paste in place" option and it somehow knows exactly what they mean and animates around the line perfectly. I tried that and it didn't work (no surprise there), and then I tried the motion guide layer setup and it also didn't work. I'm not sure if tracing a bitmap into a shape layer somehow removes any possibility of the line being recognisable as a line or something...could that be the case?
Is there a simple way to turn a shape layer (in this case the black line) into a motion guide that I'm missing? I thought just turning the layer into a guide layer would do the trick, but obviously not :/

  • How do you turn guides in layers off?

Hi, I am haveing the same problem from a long time ago which I posted that problem here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1276634?start=0&tstart=0
But now I created a new Puppet and am haveing the same problem again, I was wondering on how you turned off the guides in the layers as was the correct answer  said by Asymetrical on that thread above because when I try to do that with my puppet it didnt work. Asymetrical is probably doing it a different way than I am. If you could please send me detaled instructions on how he did this that would be fantastic.
I greatly apreashiate all the help, Thanks in advance!

I haven't seen the original fla in the post you mentioned here, but looking at the description it seems the problem was that some of the layers, which were supposed to be normal layers, were marked as guide layers.
If you have a similar issue then you can right click on any such guide layer, and uncheck "Guide" from the context menu to turn the guide layer off. Not sure if this is the problem with your content also though, as you might have tried it already I guess. You can probably share some more details about the problem content.

  • Guide Layers

I was just in the PS feature request forum and someone once again asked for improved guides. My idea was to create a special guide layer that would work like this. When the user drags a guide onto the art board a new, special guide layer is created. I can add new guides to this layer as before but I can ONLY add guides to this layer. Drawing a shape onto the layer would automatically convert it to a guide. Copying complex artwork or shapes with a fill would generate an error dialog chastising you for trying to attempt such a stupid feat. New guide layers could be created through a button along the bottom of the layers palette or simply by dragging a new guide onto any layer other then a guide layer. Guide layers could be colored and labeled (a special icon would denote this as a guide layer) individually so users could sort and organize them better. There could even be a hide behind option in the guide layer properties box which would allow guides to be hidden behind all artwork above them in the layer stack. This would be turned off by default and guides would function as they do currently. I know this can be sort of done by creating a new layer and moving guides onto that but I like the idea that AI will help me create these layers making it impossible to wind up having half of my guides on a layer with shapes and having to extract them carefully and put them on their own layer.

    > This simplifies the process...
    Simpler than one shortcut?
    >... and makes it impossible to have guides "hidden" on a layer with other content.
Which I don't see as a problem. Lots of content can be hidden on any layer. It's a lot of functionality to forfeit.
    > Turn off thumbnails and you got your real estate back.
Oh yeah. Wish I could make that a default. But then you can't drag from a child layer to a parent layer (yet another goddam bug).

  • How to stop flash pro cs6 exporting guide layers

Ive recently started using Flash cs6 having been using Flash 8 for a long time. When I export an image or image sequence from flash, it is exporting images with guide layers included, this is something which flash 8 never did and i can't get used to it and keep exporting long sequences with guide layers which is quite annoying. Is there a way I can change settings or something so this doesn't happen. any help appreciated

yeah i get the idea of guide layers and how useful they are. just dont  want all my rough layers visible when i export an image from flash.. my point being you never had to hide guide layers before publishing on old versions of flash which i think makes more sense.. why would you ever want to see a guide layer on a published image?? anyway, i discovered this only happens when using actionscript 3.0 but not 2.0 so, ive gone back to 2.0

  • Can you place a mask on a guide

    Hello,
I am trying to learn some masking techniques and I was making a file that looks like a flashlight is going across the screen and revealing its masked layer.
I would love to be able to make the spotlight move all over the page, and so I wanted to attach it to a guide on a guide layer.
is that possible? Right now, it doesn't give me the option in the layers properties.
    thanks

    Hi Rob,
I know you gave me the correct answer, but I am having some trouble doing it.
I can't seem to break up the groups of layers (mask and masked, and guide and guided) to get this to work.
I made a simple file with 2 different background color options. Then I wanted to put my ball movie clip on  a guide and use that as the mask.
I was unsuccessful..I tried different combination of what I enclosed here, but no go.
Would you or anyone else out there take a look at my file and see why I cannot get the mask to go on the guide layer?
    Thanks!

  • ActionScript keeps guides visible in Flash CC

    Hey Everyone,
Has anyone else noticed that when you Guide a layer in Flash CC (a camera guide for animation for example) the Guided layer is still part of a sequence export?
It seems to only work with Actionscript 1 or 2 which are both no longer supported in CC.
I still have more digging to do and will update discussion....
    Mark

Unfortunately not. This really bites as I was awating the fix of the fl.quit() bug- which CC fixed and now with this guide issue all exports include the guide layer. Which means no migrating to CC any time soon...We will forever live in the CS 5.5 and less world..
In the animmation world guides are used for Camera Guides defining action/title safe etc...director notes, etc..a real help to have within the FLA but not part of the final output. But i am sure this is effecting all industry as Adobe completly changed the workings of the guide layer. Really poor Q/C if you ask me. I understand new features having issues, but Adobe breaks old, tested and true features with every update.
Is there any chance that a hotfix may resolve this issue?

  • Problem turning off snap to guide MX11.0.2

    I am using FreehandMX 11.0.2 on a Mac G5 OS10.4.10 - I can no
longer use the view menu to show/hide guides, lock or turn off
snap. I can use the layers menu to show/hide or lock but cannot
turn off snap. I also cannot delete the Guide layer from the layers
menu. I have tried changing keyboard shortcut, deleting preference
file from settings folder but nothing works.

    Willem,
I don't use the F-keys in combination with modifier keys.
    Opt-F1 through
Opt-F8 are used by the system. Check in System
    Preferences>Keyboard &
Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts. Mac OS uses F9 through F12 for
    the Dock, Exposé
    and Dashboard.
If you never use certain system shortcuts, you could disable
    them in System
Prefs and thereby free them up for use in FreeHand. I have
    disabled the Mac
OS Spotlight shortcuts because they conflict with the
    magnifier tools in FH
    and Photoshop.
Here's what I use in FreeHand (US English keyboard layout):
    Grid>Show___F6
    Grid>Snap___F7
    Guides>Show___Opt+Cmd+;(semicolon)
    Guides>Snap___F8
Make sure when setting shortcuts in FH, you check "Go to
    conflict on assign"
to make sure you haven't used the same shortcut twice.
If you use a non-English keyboard layout, you might be seeing
    different
    results.
If you're using Entourage 2004 11.0, make sure to update to a
    current
version, because there's a known conflict with keyboard
    shortcuts in Adobe
    apps there.

  • Guide behaviour

I do not always like the way guides behave. I would like to see these options:
Option to put guides on dedicated layer automatically.
If this layer is locked it should still be possible to add guides to it, but not to change them without unlocking them.
Option to exclude guides from marquee-style selection (drag selection)
I liked the dedicated guide editor panel in Freehand a lot, maybe something like this could be added to AI as well. (A separate guides layer would go half-way towards this wish.)
The best feature I ever saw in respect to guides comes from a freeware program, Google Sketchup: There is an option to change guides (and other geometry, btw) immediately after creating them by just typing the numerical position value. This would easily work for horizontal and vertical guides, and is *very* handy. Actually, their whole concept to drag guides out of any straight path is quite impressive. Talk about ease of use. (Please note that I do not compare AI to Sketchup as a whole, of course, just this single feature and their general attitude towards usability.)

Blasted blank emails. I tried to edit the blank email and was told I don't have permission to do so.
This is what it should have said:
No Bob. That's a document-wide setting isn't it? This happens inconsistently through the document.
I've got a step closer. At some time in history the document was set up with an A master which simply defined page dimensions, and a B master which added running footers. All the other masters are based on the B master.
If I base the B master on [None] instead of A, and then format the guides in the B master, fewer pages act erratically.
In fact it looks now as if just a couple of pages are misbehaving. These use masters which change the number of columns from the B master they are based on. But another master in the set, which differs only by the running head, behaves properly.
So unless someone can point to a rule that says don't change the number of columns when basing masters on another, this will remain a mystery with somewhat less of an irritation than half an hour ago.
