Guided Procedures Vs BPM

Hi
Can anybody tell me the difference betwwen two and which one is better and in what terms??
Is there any way out to migrate GP applications to BPM? It may sound weird but don't have any knowledge in this regard.
Thanks
Monika

Hi Monika,
Netweaver BPM aka Galaxy is said to be the successor of Guided Procedures which will be phased out in future. SAP will be supporting GP only until 2013. Also there are several differences between GP and BPM. Some of them are:
With BPM, you can change your process easily as compared to GP
Mapping between tasks is a pain in GP, but easy in BPM
BPM is pretty new while GP is around for sometime and much more stable than BPM
BPM gives you the flexibilty to design the process Graphically that is easily uderstood by Business and Tecnical guys
In BPM lot more features are there currently and more will be there once Netweaver 7.2 is released.
Hope this helps!!

Arafat

  • Guided Procedures and BPM

    Hello,
I read that GP as a portal workflow tool is going away and being replaced by BPM(Business Process Management)....i want to know the key differences between both of them .....and i also want to learn BPM.....can somebody provide useful documents on it....
Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Anil

    Hi Anil
With BPM, you have more facility to develop business process. You have a tool called Process Composer in NWDS, where you can develop using a high level interface.
BPM isn't complete as GP, because it is in initial versions, but SAP is going to increment this process
You can learn more about BPM in [https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-bpm|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-bpm].
There are a lot of interest think about bpm there.

  • Integration process communicating with guided procedure

    Hi everybody,
I read that it is possible to exchange messages between Integration Processes and SAP Business Workflow. Is it also possible to trigger and communicate to a guided procedure in a Integration process?
    Thanks,
    Mane

Integration processes can integrate with anything which uses one of the protocols supported by XI adapters (and you could even enhance this, by creating your own custom adapters).
E.g., to integrate with SAP Workflow, you could call a standard BAPI or a Z RFC that executes the desired workflow (or feed some step of a already in-process workflow).
For Guided Procedures, you could basically use anything that the UI frameworks within SAP portfolio support. For example, if you develop a WebDynpro-based GP, you could make the WebDynpro consume a Web Service that, for instance, triggers a BPM execution (you expose the 1st receiver step of the BPM, which should be a open sync/async bridge, as a web service through a sender soap adapter).
    That's just one example.
    Regards,
    Henrique.

  • Workflows using Guided procedures

    Hi,
    1) How does Guided procedures(GP) internally implement workflows? Does it call workflow items created in an R/3 server or does it have its own platform for implementing the same? If it has its own implementation, can it also call R/3 workflows?
    2) What is the main advantage of using GP for workflow tasks in portal compared to using UWL in portal? One advantage I see is GP can be used to integrate users, data across different system, but is there any other advantage in situations where the data comes from one single R/3 server?
    Regards,
    Srini.

    Hi Srini,
On the workflow processing level, Guided Procedures offers two possibilities. One of them is to use the built-in Java-based processing engine, which is mainly appropriate for testing purposes. The other option is to configure GP with the SAP Business Workflow (aka BPM Runtime Engine), which runs in the ABAP stack. In this case, you create and start processes in GP, but the processing is done on the ABAP side.
Regarding the differences between the GP runtime and UWL, I think the concept here is slightly different. In UWL you have access to your tasks (it works on the task level). By the way, GP offers UWL integration as well, and enables you to see the tasks generated in GP also in the UWL. However, when using the GP runtime tools, you have an overview on the entire process, and you have different authorization concepts as well - process Administrator, Owner, Overseer, contributors, and so on. You can see what the status of the overall process is, the process output and so on. Even if data comes from a single system, GP offers a process-driven, user-oriented view on it.
I hope this answers your questions. For more details, you can have a look at the https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/developerareas/platform?rid=/webcontent/uuid/7b9b3834-0801-0010-6a9a-dc53e0db37f2">caf [original link is broken] [original link is broken].

  • Difference between Guided Procedures and Business Workflow?

    Hi,
I'm new to workflows, so this question could be easy or absurd.
Is there a difference between Guided Procedures and Business Workflows? Or is this
the same thing with two names?
If it is different, when do I use which of them?
    Could both use UWL?
    Thanks a lot
    greetz
    chris

Workflow is a technology used to support business processes. You can make workflows without thinking/doing business processes. When you do business processes you will always wind up using workflow technology. All business process execution tools should by principle use a workflow engine at least SAP ones do. Not sure about others like Oracle BPEL tools for example.
SAP tools like GP and BPM/XI use either Netweaver Java or Abap workflow embedding the technical aspects of workflow design and runtime into the Netweaver stack simplifying the business user experience as it relates to designing and running business processes. But designing and running workflows using workflow tools directly still is very muc an IT challenge.

  • Guided procedures-help required

    Hi,
I have deployed some updated content in guided procedures. (Deleted the entire ORGINAL content even from the deleted items folder). The problem is other processes have disappeared strangely(folder names are missing the content inside the folder is present) .
Although i did not make any changes in those folders, the folder names are not appearing strangely.
Does the problem lie with deployment of content through SDM(i deployed all .sda files in one go) or any other issue.
Do i need to roll back the changes?
    Please suggest.

    Hi David,
Assuming that they are actually blocks in a process (I do not see other possibility of actually handling two different processes instead of two blocks in a process, but I will confirm with the person who brought the issues to my notice), is it possible to specify exit condition for one block that also depends on the exit condition of second block? That means even if the exit condition of one block is met, can it wait for the second block's exit condition?
In BPM we have Fork step where I can specify parallel branches and design the process such that it runs through certain number of branches. Is anything available like this in GP? Can you please provide any documentation which explains the parallel block handling in GP?  As I mentioned in my other response, I am familiar with BPM, but never used GP.
    Thank you very much.

  • Guided Procedures Theme

    Dear All,
Does anyone know where I can change the theme for the Guided Procedures Runtime Screen or once a procedure has been begun?
    Regards
    Richard

    Hi Gareth,
The Fork step is used in the XI BPM. There we can configure so that the process runs through the required number of branches. I am not familiar with Guided Procedures, which are configured in EP. I think BPM and GP are different from each other. Is that right? Can we also have Fork in GP?

  • Guided Procedures - Urgent help please

    Hello,
Can anybody please help me with the information I am looking for?
Our issues with EP Guided Procedures (GP) are in two spots:
    1) Parameter Passing - Use of  “out”  and “in” parameters from the process context to return / send values from Web Dynpro is not possible using out-of-box functionality.
    2) Eventing / Wait states/ "eventing" - In GP, when multiple parallel processes come to the final decision point, the automated decision point is processed based on the first process that arrives to the decision point. It is not possible to ‘Hold’ a process until the other parallel processes are complete.
Which of the following statements is true with respect to the issues we are having?
    a) the product has these capabilities, and we've just not properly taken advantage of them;
    b) the functionality doesn't currently exist - but is planned for near releases;
    c) the functionality doesn't exist - nor is it planned to be delivered by SAP.
    Thank you very much.

    Hello,
We are getting the following error when a user is trying to execute an Action in the Guided Procedures Process:
"Cannot complete Action: Activity could not be read".
    What can be causing this?
Any help would be highly Appreciated.

    Hello,
This is more than likely due to an inconsistency of a GP object at database level. I suggest opening an OSS ticket as this would require detailed analysis.

  • Task based UI (Guided Procedure) in SAP CRM 7.0

I am trying to build a Task Based UI in SAP CRM 7.0. I followed the steps which SAP mentions but unfortunately i can't get it work.I am a functional consultant and so its quite possible that might have missed something critical
This is the sequence of steps i followed
Step 1 - Create new BSP component
    2 - Created 3 custom views
    3 - Created a "Guided Maintenance Page"
4 - According to SAP documentation/material - when i open the view/page created in step 3 i would be able to see the views i created in Step 2 and i can choose the views ( and the sequence) i want to use in the guided procedure.
But unfortunately in Step 3 - i don't see any of the views i created in "Step 2" .
So just wondering what i have missed and why the guided procedure is not working.
    thanks in advance!
    Cheers
    SS

    Hi Ruby,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
In your reply you have mentioned that - "As far as I know , if you use the guided  maintainence  procedure , at the top you can see the number of custom views added in the component , in your case you will be able to see them as 1, 2 and 3"
The issue I am encountering is that  I don't see the (any) custom view in my guided procedure.
I don't see any of the the custom views 1,2 or 3 listed in the top half of the page. All i see is a table with no entries in it.
So i am wondering if i have missed out any important step in guided procedure( task based UI) creation process.
    thanks in advance!
    Cheers

  • How to change the name of (Guided procedure) GP Runtime View?

    Hello all!
At Design time in GP (Guided Procedure), I have added a runtime view at the tab "Runtime Views" named Additional Resources to a GP process.  At runtime, when the process is started,  at the left bar appears the button "Additional Resources". Is there a way to change this name? Any idea can be helpfull :).
    Kindly Regards,
    Luiza

    Hi,
an other solution is change the block property QUERY_DATA_SOURCE_TYPE from "Table" to "Sub-query" , than change at run time the property QUERY_DATA_SOURCE_NAME.
First create block and add items
The QUERY_DATA_SOURCE_NAME will be for ex. "Select 'A' as col1, 'B' AS col2, 'C' as col3 from dual"
Set into items the column name property to col1 , col2 ...
At run time change the query to "Select 'Z' as col1, 'X' as col2 , 'Y' as col3 from dual"
in this way you can change the source of column value.
Caution because if you change value type from varchar2 to date you must cast date into varchar2.
May be that this way is valid only for view data not for insert-update, i don't remember.
    bye
