Guideline for Using 40 Char in Short Text Field of Material Master

Dear Experts & Forum Members,
In MM01 while creating a Material Master record (spare part) we need to fill in Basic Data. It has a field known as "Short Text Field " This Field has limitation of 40 characters. This is the same field which has Searched associated with it. This description is what we see when we look for Stock Overview of Material in the Stores through MEMBER.
To use this 40 characters efficiently people usually come up with a guideline so that maximum and meaningful information crucial information for identification of spare part/material is VIEWED when we see it.
For example for an AC Motor the description may look like
*MOTOR AC SQ 100KW 1500 RPM 8P CLA FRXYZ
which describes AC Motor, Squirrel Cage Type, 100 KW, 1500 RPM, 8 Pole, Class A, Frame Size XYZ
Request the forum members to provide / share any guideline they might have come up with to use these 40 characters to describe different spare parts.

Hi Vinay,
We are also doing the same activity and we are arranging the material description in a manner which is almost simlar to you.
But, except one thing which is Classification. We have classification feature mapped with material master for the details of Dimension,Brand,Color and Orgin.

Making short text field in Display mode for one particular Purchasing

Hi All,
This is regarding Making the Short text field in Display mode of PR for one Particular Purchasing.. i am giving you a bit elaborate...We are into E-Catalog Procurement.I will do the shopping from the Vendors external catalog and i will return back to SAP.
While doing so, i dont want the user to change the Short Text field. I want that field shud display the Description. When i tried with the Screen Layout settings, it is fully grayed out and i am not able to see the Description of the Material. Is there any other options to get this enabled?. Please advice me on this settings to be done. Thanks in Advance.

Define a Field selection key (new not the one which is assigned to document type) which makes short text editable in screen layout config. and assign it to functional authorization value in t.code OMET. (it should be numeric). Then assign that functional authorization value in user master SU01 for users with parameter id EFB.
Then it will work

Through transaction code IW29 or IW59, complete field information is not available.

Make short text field in Purchase order creation only display..

Sir,
Yeah my requirement is quite unusual, but such is the situation.
I want to make the short text field in purchase order creation "only disply". what is happening is that user while creating PO is able to change the text of material in short text column. I want to make it only for display.
Can it done on document type level, since for service type, and Text type of account assignment cat, only text field is filled up. so how to do it.

If you want to have the short text display only for standard item but not service item, you may check below customizing.
Transaction SPRO:
MM-PUR-PO
-> Define screen layout at document level
Field Selection group: Basic Data, Item
Field Selection Key: PT0F Standard item purchase order
Field: Short text -> set as display

Production order no is missing the Batch short text field in MSC2N T.code

Hi Guys,
I have some requirement in my project. I have maintained Batch management in my project.
When I create & release the Production order in CO01, immediately Batch number (Produciton order: Goods receipt tab) creates automatically by the system.
Also this same production order should be appeared in the Short text field in Basic data 2 tab in the transaction MSC2N.
But this production order no. is not updated automatically in the short text field in MSC2N.
Is there any standard settings available for this case?
Please help me the same.

Hi Mohan,
There is no standard link between Production Order and Batch Master Record, If your client needs the production order number in Batch Master record, short text field. we need to achieve it thro user exits with the help of developers.

I am trying to search for a sapce within a text field but sofar not being very successful. I have used:

           MATCH COUNT lv_mcnt
           MATCH OFFSET lv_moff.
where search_str = TYPE c VALUE ' '.

Developer Guidelines for Using /tmp ?

Is there an Apple document anywhere with an official guidelines for using /tmp?
I know Apple started (explicitly) encouraging developers to use /tmp under Leopard because it's ignored by Time Machine but I can't find any actual definition of what a "temporary" file is or how long it can be guaranteed to exist in /tmp. Does the system regularly flush /tmp files using something like cron or luanchd as a part of system maintain?
I think it is a good idea but I don't want someone to leave the application open and possibly have a support file pulled out from underneath it.

I don't think Apple's guidelines are any different than the standard /tmp guidelines for UNIX. That being said, I don't know if they are written down anywhere.
I wouldn't use /tmp at all if there were another option. Most UNIX programmers try to avoid it because it is is usually a tiny partition on a local file system. Often, if you need a temp file, you need lots of space. Other times, you need a temp file but you want it to be fast. A common tactic is to create temp files and then hard link them into place when you are done. That usually won't work if using /tmp because the final destination is a different file system.

They usually go away at reboot. I don't know if it is shutdown or start up. /tmp is a good place for UNIX sockets, but not much else.
I think it is a good idea but I don't want someone to leave the application open and possibly have a support file pulled out from underneath it.
Nothing is going to get pulled out from underneath. I don't know the details of when the flush takes place, but I know it won't touch any open files. Otherwise, some system services (UNIX sockets are on my mind these days) wouldn't work. I wouldn't close any file in /tmp and later expect it to be there. It usually will be there, but it isn't guaranteed.

How can I avoid the modification of short text of a Material ?

Hello Experts, I want to prevent the situation in which the user choose a Material number when creates a Purchase Requisition (ME51N) and the system uses the Material Master description. But before save this document, the user change the short text of the material. This cause a lot of confusion on purchasing department. I would like to have this field as only display screen layout, but the issue here is that we need to procure another materials without material master number.
Any Suggestions?

Hi,
You can use Version Management for Purchase Requisitions to avoid Changes.
You can set the fields for Version Managemnt. Such that if any user changes the relevent field it will ask reason for change and Modifier.
There is one more option called Copying rules for Purchase orders. Plz have a look in it.

Authorisation object for "PO text in the material master"

Hi,
My requirement is as below:
"All users can see the Purchase Order Text as usual, but only a few users should be allowed to create / change the PO Long Text.
For other users, the same should appear in display mode only (both in creation & in change mode, MM01 & MM02)."
Please let me know, How to map this.
As per my knowledge thsi is possible only thru authorisation. But I want to know what is the authorisation object for "PO text in the material master" (Pl note that only for PO text in the material master field). we want control on "PO text of material master"

Upload of purchase order text in the material master

Now we have information of Purchase order text for all the material.
Is it possible to upload the Purchase order text using LSMW.
Some friends were telling that LSMW is not possible for Purchase Order text.
Can anyone suggest how I can upload this purchase order text for all 1000
material using LSMW program.
/if not LSMW is there any other method to upload it

there is standard direct upload i believe
go to lsmw
Execute 1st option
then inLSMW:Object Attribute screen
in standard batch/ direct input
firsr radio button
select object 005
and method 003
Program name RSTXLITF.
Then go by normal process i.e source field , field mapping...
In this way u can also upload Text in the Material master.

Text linkages from material master to purchase requisition

I already set the text linkage between basic data text in material master with item text in PR. I left fix indicator blank since I want the text to be adopted automatically.
I run MRP and create planned orders. Then I convert planned order to purchase requisition. Material master basic data text is not shown in purchase requisition. I tested using N and * and they both show. With N it shows (reading from material master) and I accnot modify it. With * it shows but I have to adopted to actually store the text as part of this document. With blank is not working. We want the text from material master to be automatically adopted in PR without manual intervention as with *.

If got ur query correctly : you want to make short text field in Preq as Display.
If yes then go to Tcode OLME (or SPRO) -> Purchase requistion->Define Screen layout at doc level->select ME51N--->double click basic data, item and make short text filed as display.

New standard field in Material master

Hi
I have to introduce "RETDELC" field in Material Master.
The said field is already available in MARA table.
The field is available only in ECC 6.0 version.
I have introduced the field in Field selection group and make it optional at client level, material type level and Transaction code level (MM01,MM02, MM03).
But stil, i could not get the same field in Material Master- Basic Material data-2 view.
Any help please!
