Guides behave strangely when zoomed in above 800%

When creating web graphics, I often zoom in very close to check pixel-critical placement of guides.  Above a certain zoom level, maybe 800%, the behavior of the guides sometimes becomes unstable.  For example, when I attempt to move a guide, Photoshop creates another guide instead, which moves.  Needless to say, this hardly inspires confidence.  Setup is Mac Pro 8 core (early 2008), 10 GB RAM, large empty scratch disk, Photoshop CS3, and Leopard 10.5.6.  Can't remember if I ever saw this behavior in Tiger.  I am wondering if others are seeing this behavior, and what can be done to fix it?

I just tried all zoom views up to an including 3,200%, all the while creating moving and even rotating guides, and I could not replicate your issue.
I'm on a PPC Mac running Tiger OS 10.4.11 and Photoshop 14.10.1, with OpenGL enabled.  Could be either a Mac-Intel or Leopard thing.
Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some.  Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available.  nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2.

  • [CS3] Guides: Shift key will remove guide when zoomed-in above 500%!?!!???

    Ok, so... PS CS3 is kinda funky (buggy?) at times...
    I am on a quad-core Mac... Fast machine with lots of memory...
    Guides, in particular, are acting strange. The most annoying thing is when I am zoomed in (500%+, using Move Tool), and I want to snap my guide to each pixel increment on the ruler, holding down the shift key while moving the guide will make my guide disappear! Why???
    Additionally, I have noticed that newly created guides will sometimes take a few seconds to refresh and/or update? The ruler itself will take a few seconds to update when I move the center point around.
    Anyway, what's up with the disappearing guides?

    UPDATE: I just opened a different document, and guides work fine... This disappearing guide problems appears to happen randomly.

    Kinda OT: I tend to work with a lot of guides in my PS docs... I kinda wish Photoshop guides behaved like Illustrator guides. It would be cool to assign guides to different layers.
    ... A few other strange PS problems I have been having:
    1. Save for web will take like a minute to actually save slices when first "saving for web" upon opening a doc... After that, it goes fast.
    2. This happens occasionally: Command-tabbing through apps (example, Photoshop to Firefox, and back to Photoshop) will not bring the Photoshop menu to the front, but Photoshop is the selected front-most app. The fix: I have to command-tab back and forth one more time, in order to get Photoshop to come to front.

  • CS5: Shapes behave strange when blurred and then duplicated

    Hello there,
    I've encountered a strange behaviour (in PS CS5) when I created a simple shape with the shape tool, blurred it via the "Mask"-palette and tried to duplicate it with ALT+Drag:
    The layer was duplicated, but only the original shape could be seen. All kind of strange things happened, even when I tried to go back in the history-palette. I had to go back before the "Blur"-Step to get everything working normal again.
    When I don't blur the shape, everything works fine as expected. I can duplicate and move the shape/copies as much as I want. Autoselect layer/group is always OFF.
    I tried this several times now and it seems to me that there is a bug somewhere. Can someone try to reproduce this behaviour?

    Sorry, I'm using the German version (OS: Win7 x64), so I'm not sure about what the setting is called in the English version.
    There is a slider in the "Mask" palette which's called "Weiche Kante", so I think it's the "feather" slider you mentioned.
    Considering the procedure: I don't want to copy the vector mask, I want to duplicate the whole shape (layer) via selecting the layer in the palette and ALT+dragging the shape directly in the image.
    This works completely fine as long as I don't use the "feather" slider (Result: I get a second shape and a copy of the shape layer in the layer palette as expected).
    Changing the feather slider to a value > 0 everything gets messed up when using ALT+drag.

    P.S.: There also seems to be a visual bug when overlapping two shapes on different layers with feather value > 0. See picture. (all shapes are identical)
    But it's gone when saving, closing and reloading the file.

  • ITunes Behaving Strangely When I Sync

    Ok, I have some serious issues going on with iTunes, and I am hopeful that you all can help me diagnose the problem.
    The symptoms:
    1. If I download an app on my iPhone or iPad which already exist in my iTunes library, iTunes will delete that app from my device when I sync it.
    2. When I connect my iPhone or iPad to my Mac to sync it, iTunes insists on reinstalling EVERY app installed on the device, unless I cancel the sync and transfer all newly-purchased/downloaded apps from the iPad/iPhone prior to syncing.
    3. When I right-click on my iPad and select "Transfer Purchases", new music will transfer to iTunes, but new apps will not. (This one just started today, and seems to be confined to the iPad alone; the iPhone does not seem to be affected.)
    I have tried everything I could find, including doing a complete restore on both the iPad and iPhone, rebuilding iTunes library, and even completely uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but nothing as of yet has helped. I thank you in advance for any and all assistance you are able to provide.

    I restored my iPad, which fixed the third symptom, and doing away with the auto-sync and transferring purchases from the iPad to my Mac before syncing works around the first symptom, but I'm still experiencing symptom #2, where any app I download directly to my iPad (or my iPhone) that already exists in my iTunes library will get uninstalled when I sync my iPad (or iPhone) to my Mac unless I manually go through each and every app that I downloaded to the iPad (or iPhone) and click its checkbox in the Apps tab. This really gets annoying, especially on a day like today, when I was away from home and remembered a big bunch of apps that I wanted to reinstall on my iPad. That meant that once I got home, I had to do the following:
    1. Connect the iPad to my Mac and open iTunes.
    2. Go to the Apps tab on my iPad.
    3. Click "Apply"
    4. Have it tell me that 16(!) apps were going to be removed including <name of app #1 here>.
    5. Click "Cancel". (A "Keep All" button would be a lifesaver right here, as I would be finished!)
    6. Find <name of app #1 here> and click its checkbox, then click "Apply".
    7. Have it tell me that 15 apps were going to be removed including <name of app #2 here>.
    8. Click "Cancel".
    9. Find <name of app #2 here> AND <name of app #1 here>, because iTunes unchecks all the apps that were unchecked when we first arrived at the Apps tab after each canceled Sync.
    …and so on…
    In other words, by the time I got to the end, I had to find apps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16, clicking each of their checkboxes, and then FINALLY click "Apply".
    Admittedly, re-downloading 16 apps while not at home isn't a daily occurrence, but re-downloading 3 or even 4 happens often enough for this to be a real pain in the derrierre.
    Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this or how to fix it?

  • Query behave strange when called from java

    Hi,
    I had the same scenario a few times in two different queries in different databases (10g v2) and so not putting the query.
    When I run the query from sqlplus/toad it takes less than a second
    When I run it from java it takes about 5 minutes.
    I could have thought it is something to do with Java ...
    But when I rename the underlying table and use the new name in the query it takes normal (less than a second) time both in java and sqlplus/toad.
    Before changing the name, I have tried rebuilidng the indexes and analyzing the table. The table has about 10 million rows and 13 indexes in one scenario and as less as 400k with 3 indexes in the other scenario. and in both cases updated once daily.
    Each time this happends either a rename or dropping and recreating the table is solving the problem. I am lost.. any ideas what might be causing this problme; any solutions.

    Do whatever it is you are doing that makes it faster and run an Explain Plan capturing the output with DBMS_XPLAN. Also save off the stats collected on the table and indexes
    Then, when performance deteriorates capture another plan along with the stats.
    What is different?
    A table with 13 indexes is an indication of an issue. I would suggest someone take a good look at why so many indexes are there.

  • Lightroom Slideshow behave strangely when changing star rating.

    Hi there,
    I am having issues with Lightroom Slideshow when in Manual Mode and filter is on.
    When I try and do a manual slideshow and I have filters on "Rating" = ** and I try and change an image to a "*" or a "***" then the slildeshow starts acting weird i.e. it will start showing images randomly on its own. I have to cancel the slideshow and restart. This is easy to reproduce.
    Any ideas?

    You can use star ratings whether the dots are there or not. Try keys 0-5.
    Anyway, the View/Grid view style/Show extras menu item will re-instate the star field on your thumbnails.

  • Popup behaves strange when resizing

    Hello,
    I create a popup programmatically.
    After it is rendered I go to the downright corner to enlarge it. This corner has dots to show that it's resizeable.
    Resizing works, but not as expected. Although I enlarge it only a little bit the screen gets filled up with the content of the popup. I only get out pressing the 'ESC' key.
    After reopening it, it will be rendered with the 'last' size before pressing 'ESC'?
    Is there possibility to switch off the possibility to resize the popup window?

    Once the popup is resized, the size of popup will remain as per the size during the last resize.
    If you want to set the fixed height & width - every time you launch the popup - set the contentHeight and contentWidth for the popup using popupFetchListener.

  • Can't move/select diagonal guides when zoomed in 600%

    Hi there, I'm working on a few objects I have to divide using diagonal guides. However, when I try to select one of them above 600% zoom, I'm not able to activate them using the selection tool or the direct selection tool. I can select them using the layers panel but as soon as I zoom in above 600% and try to move them with the selection tools they get deselected. How can I fix this? Thanks!

    Does anybody know why type might render strangely when viewing a PDF in Chrome, Firefox and IE?
    I have a client who I create a report for every year. This year there seems to be a problem with the PDFs that I have exported when they are viewed in various web browsers. To elaborate, the type is rendering inconsistently – in Chrome the weight of the type is inconsistent (ranging from light to something more heavy) and in IE the type appears more condensed, and the x-height is variable.
    To my knowledge Chrome, Firefox and IE are all affected in one way or another. The problem does not occur in Safari.
    We always use Helvetica Neue and have never had problems like this before. I am using the same version of Helvetica Neue as I always use, but even when I change the font to Helvetica the problem still persists.
    On a deadline so would appreciate some support here. Box of beer to the person who can provide me with a working solution!

    Hello Ellis. Thanks for your efforts in helping narrow down this issue, and for offering workarounds for Simon. Here are the steps I sent to Simon, enhanced by the info you provided above:
    1. I typed some text in Id CC 2014.0 (Mac OS 10.9.4) using the system font Helvetica Neue Light at 12 pt. All defaults were on, including ligatures.
    1.a. I used the text in Simon's example, “An Annual Report marks the end of a year’s work, but it is also an opportunity to reflect on the principles that” and reduced the text frame width so that it wrapped across 4 lines.
    1.b. I also tried creating an all-page text frame and filling it with placeholder text (same font, same point size).
    2. Export > Interactive PDF (or Static PDF: doesn’t make a difference), using all the default PDF export settings.
    3. View resulting PDF in the latest Chrome (36.0.1985.143) on that same Mac, or on Windows, at various zoom levels, on a retina display as well as on a lower-dpi monitor. It looks fine to me: all words and lines have the same even "color" or weight.
    In all cases, the fonts embedded in the PDF were listed as:
    HelveticaNeue-Light (Embedded Subset)
    Type: TrueType
    Encoding: Ansi
    HelveticaNeue-Light (Embedded Subset)
    Type: TrueType (CID)
    Encoding: Identity-H
    If you follow the above steps, can you repro the problem?

  • Keep stroke weight when zooming into a comp

      I am building an animation which depicts the building of an element in Photoshop using grid, guides, and bezier paths. I need to represent these items graphically, and not using a screen grab animation.
      I need to zoom into a comp up to 800% and show how paths and grid are manipulated in pixel-perfect work. When zooming in, the paths that show the grid and the bezier paths must stay at 1px in width at all zoom levels.
      I'll be creating "bezier" strokes using the path tool in AE. I'll be applying a line weight to it in order to show the strokes. When I zoom in, the strokes need to stay the same weight.
      What's the easiest way to accomplish this?

    You would link the stroke width of e.g. a shape layer to the zoom/ scale with a linear() expression.
    linear(zoom,startzoom,endzoom,startwidth,endwidth)
    Fill in values as needed. The actual zoom varable could be linked to a slider ir the scale of the pre- comped main animation in the parent comp...

  • Image display control scrolling does not work properly when zoomed in

    I am using a ROI on an image in the image display control. When zooming into the image to fine-adjust the positioning of the ROI, the image scrolling does not work properly. As far as I understand, the image should scroll automatically when the ROI is leaving the visible area. However, the scrolling behaviour seems to depend on the origin of the Labview panel, not the origin of the image display control, which might require to move the ROI way out of the visible area before the scrolling takes place. In other words: the coordinate system of the image display control is shifted with respect to the true visible image area, depending on where you place it on the front panel. As a consequence, when clicking on a ROI which is in the visible area, but is outside of what Labview thinks is the visible area, it might immediately jump to the left border of the image, making the positioning of the ROI really difficult.
    Has anyone noticed this behaviour, and what would be a reliable solution to avoid this?

    Hello,
    no, I am not talking about the tools palette. Just place an image control with some image in it on a new VI front panel. Then, use the rectangle from the tools and select a ROI in the image. If you zoom in (using the magnification glass), and then grab the ROI and move it around, the image scroll with the ROI. So far, so good. If you now place the image control elsewhere on the panel, or add new control above it, resize the panel, etc. , this scrolling when moving the ROI will not work correctly if the origin (0,0) of the panel is far away from the image control.
    I have attached a VI for simplicity (although there is hardly any code in it).
    If you make a ROI and try to move it down, you will notice that scrolling starts if you move the mouse out to about 10cms below the image (depens on your screen, of course). After that, if you click on the ROI, the scroll bars and ROI might jump up to the upper end of the image. Imagine how annoying this is if you try to finely adjust the ROI position. 
    I think it is a bug in the implementation of the image display control.

  • A 1 pixel gap appears on webpage on the ipad or when zoomed on a Mac with Firefox 4

    I'm having an issue with a website having a 1 pixel gap under various OS's and browsers.

    When viewed on an iPad it shows a 1 pixel gap on the right side of the link icons.  When you zoom on the iPad, the gap disappears and reappears at random zoom factors.
    When viewed on my Mac Pro under Firefox (version 4) it is fine to start, but when zoomed, random images have the 1 pixel gap sometimes above and below or to the left or right or sometimes both above/below and left/right.
    I'm not over worried about the behaviour of Firefox...since it is only when the page is zoomed.
    When I view it on my Windows PC, I have no issue with the gap under Firefox 3 or 4, or IE.
    Any thoughts on what is going on?

    Have you thought of entering the following code at the very top of your CSS file?
                    margin: 0;
                    padding: 0;
                    border: 0;
    This should reset the browser of your iPad and FF in Mac.  I use neither so I can't test it at my end.  the above code is not likely to affect any other standards compliant browsers.

    The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

    from a time machine partition.
    TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.

    Most commonly used backup methods
    There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.

  • Has anyone ever encountered layer blend modes behaving strangely?

    I use photoshop quite a bit for retouching and photo compositing. Tonight I encountered a strange problem. I was trying to create a vintage look on a photo and had a number of adjustment layers including a curves, levels, color fill and there were also a few texture/noise layers all set to varying opacities. Near the top of all this I had a vignette layer that was black around the edges and white in the center set to blend mode of multiply. Well, when I was clicking on and off I realize that that vignette layer was definitely lightening the center part of the overall image quite a bit (the part that is white on the vignette layer), almost like a screen. So I flipped the vignette layer through different opacity modes and saw that there was no change in its behavior, every mode was screening the white, even darker color and multiply. I thought maybe it was interacting in a weird way with one of the other layers so I turned all the others off except the back ground-- still no change. Then I dropped the layer down one at time until it was below the background. When I started to move it up again, it was behaving normally for a moment until I moved it up a couple levels in the stacking order and then it went back to the screen behavior. Anyway I shuffled it around a bit but there was no consitency to when it would display the correct opacity and when it wouldn't, so it did not seem to be an interaction with any specific layer. I don't know, but I can't really think of any case where white set to multiply should produce a lighter result even if it were interacting with another opacity. In any case it does seem to me that there is something going on with the overall computation of opacities. I tried creating a new black and white layer and it was also doing the same thing, behaving strange and not displaying the correct opacity.
    I'm tired, so I'm going to bed. I'm going to shut off the computer and hope this goes away when I reboot, but if it does not, does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not a regular visitor to this forum, but I thought I'd put it out there in case anyone else has experienced anything like this. I've only got 5 gigs of ram on this computer and I've been working away for a while... maybe photoshop just couldn't keep up(?) I'm using Photoshop CS5, RGB Adobe 1998 colorspace.  I've never had anything like this happen in the last 11 years I've been using photoshop. Hmmm.... hope I don't have to reinstall or call support or worse. fingers crossed.

    Nevermind. It is still having the problem. I have to think that this file is just corrupt somehow because I just opened another file and can't seem to cause the same problem. Basically, I can fill a layer with white, put it to a blend mode of multiply or darker color and it will block out everything of the image below, ie totally opaque. The opaqueness varies depending on the if there are other layers also on blend modes, but it does not seem to correspond to normal blend mode interaction. If I put it right on top of a regular layer with an image on it, it totally blocks it out on a blend mode of multiply... weird. I am going to scrap this file and see if the problem recurs in other files. My 2006 Mac Pro is getting some years on it and has been running pretty slow. I'm not a hardware expert but I've done everything I know how to do to maintain it. Was thinking of upping the ram to see if I can hold out a bit longer before I upgrade the computer. Wouldn't surprise me if this problem is related to the computer.

  • Metronome behaving strangely

    When I press the record button in GB 3.0.4 The level meter displays a pulsing level, but I hear no sound for the metronome until I depress a key on my MIDI keyboard. This remains true whether I have it set to "Count In" or not. Another curious problem is that if I set the metronome to play during both Playback and Recording, I don't hear it during playback, until it reaches a region. For example, if I start playing from m. 1 but no instruments enter until m. 2, I don't hear the click start until after the instruments enter.
    Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas what might be causing it?

    Hangtime, thanks for your help, but the issue isn't the volume of the metronome. Normal GB functionality is that if you have Metronome selected to be "on," then when you click on the Record button you immediately hear the metronome, as well as see the click registering on the meter. I don't hear it, even though it is registering on the meter, until I depress a key on my MIDI keyboard. Then I hear it just fine. I've been working with this software since version 1 came out, and I've never had this problem before. I also have Sibelius, Logic, and Reason, so I am wondering if I may have unknowingly tweaked some setting that is making MIDI in GB behave strangely.
