Guild Wars & Boot Camp

I hope someone can help.
I've been playing GW for over 2 year and just switched to Mac Book Pro 15" as my main computer. I did a trial version of VMWare to see if GW would run. Considering that the version of XP I was using (XP Pro 64 bit) I could log in and play but the graphics weren't up to par(really bad).
Since then I deleted VMWare off my computer when the trial expired and went out and bought Win XP Home Ed. SP 2 full version, so I would have a proper verion of Windoze to use. I installed and ran Boot camp no problems, installed Windoze, so far so good. Installed drivers (from the Apple provided disc) and game.
When I log in now graphics kick any of my PCs video to the curb, but the game keeps crashing the only message I get is: "Error! Disk Full." Sometimes the error pops up right away sometime it can take 10 minutes to appear, reguardless if I am staying put in the scene or running around doing a mission.
This is what I have tried with no luck:
Dailing the graphics in the game down all the way
Trying 3rd party newer graphics driver verisons
Other NVidia drivers found on Apple website
Driver Agent(website) said my graphic drivers are fine.
(I went graphics heavy route since Arena Net is blaming the graphics drivers for the error).
My XP setup is:
20GB HD size with 10.3 GB free
1.98GB of RAM
Wired connection to my AirPort Extreme Router.
Am I on a wild goose chase looking at the graphics as an issue?
Does anyone else have any tips that might help?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice.
Jenn

I have heard that the recommended size for the XP partition is 30 GB for purposes of virtual memory. You may want to try increasing the XP partition to 30 GB. I am not sure if that will require formatting that partition and reinstalling XP, or if you can do it with disk utility.

  • Guild Wars 2 client updating on Windows 7 Boot Camp

I originally downloaded and installed Guild Wars 2 client and updated with no problem. I've played the game and everything ran fine. I wanted to make a larger partition for my windows, so I went through the entire process of deleting the windows partition and creating a new one and then installing windows 7 Home Premium on it. After the clean install I downloaded the Guild Wars 2 client just fine, but when it attempts to update, it only updates for about 4 seconds to around 1MB of data. I use a direct ethernet connection The error says "Download Failed! Please check your internet connection and try again." The update continually builds off of the download so I'm almost done downloading the whole update (16GB) but it shouldn't have any problems maintaining it's connection. I have no firewall on and no antivirus even installed since i'm not using this computer for anything else until I figure out the problem. I tried other games to see if it was an overall problem, but I can update and play The Secret World and Tera with zero problems as well as other offline games that require patches like Dragon Age 2 and Sniper Elite V2. It can't be something simple since I've already contacted my ISP to make sure there was no throttling or blocks on their end and I've been contacting Arenanet technical support and they don't have any ideas for windows boot camp issues.
Any ideas on what could be the issue? The common firewall, antivirus, and ISP possibilities have been troubleshot to death.

you should be using Microsoft Security Essentials, regardless, or something for firewall besides your router, though that should be doing some of the work.
Windows on Mac aka "Boot Camp" is just to partition and motherboard drivers, otherwise it is maybe 95% same as a PC (sans BIOS for EFI).
You could of course bought WinClone or Paragon CampTuneX $20 to resize the old partitions.
Download managers and torrent-type with what ports it uses etc are not my area (torrents are funny, your IP address is out there for all to see and find which is one reason to not turn off firewalls and everything).

  • Can the boot camp partition be resized once windows is installed and running as virtual machine using vm fusion ware?

I have macbook air partitioned 505/50 and running OSX and win 7 side by side as virtual machines using vm fusion.  Can the partition size be changed without starting over?

Very helpful.  I started with vm ware to create a pseudo drive but could not import win 7 over home network.  mac has no immediate way to connect to network without adapter, and has no cdrom.  So i used boot camp to create partition, then made a bootable win7 iso file on a memory stick using win 7 usb/cdrom download tool from microsoft, and rEFIT to get mac to boot from the mem stick into the dos partition.  Then i ran vm fusion to import the win 7 partition as a virtual machine.  OSx and win 7 run side by side.
Seems from what you say that sizing cannot be accomplished without deleting partition and starting over.  If I start over and just run vm fusion to create he win7 virtual machine, not sure how I would bet the minimum win 7 os into the ac.  Perhaps vm will boot from the mem stick using refit.  Do you know?

  • MacBook Pro and Guild Wars 2?

I want to purchase a MacBook Pro for my son to use at college next year. He'll be pursuing and engineering degree, but is also a big PC gamer.
    1. Are the 13" MacBook Pros capable of playing PC games like Guild Wars 2 and WOW?
    2. What's the best way to run PC games on a Mac–Bootcamp, Parallels, or Fusion?
    3. What's the best/most affordable MacBook Pro configuration I can get away with?
    Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with wjosten on this one. Macs can be great gaming machines. For example, the iMacs always have the 2nd best mobile graphics chipset available. The same can't be said for the MacBooks Pros, but if you take wjosten's advice, you won't have the luxury of the Mac OS either. I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro, and I play Guild Wars 2 under Boot Camp. I can play it on medium-low graphics settings with no lag, and it still looks great. I have also installed it on the Mac side using Winskin, but that's much more complex, and the results aren't as good. If you opt for the cheapest 15" MBP, you'll get a dedicated graphics chipset that will be able to play the game on high graphics settings no problem. Do the kid a favor and get him a Mac, and not a PC...

  • Boot camp, viruses, and backup

i'm going to install boot camp on my macbook soon so i can play guild wars; does anyone have any suggestions for firewalls, spyware blockers, or anti-virus softwares that are free until i get a good anti-virus program. also, how do i back up all my programs on a dvd in case i mess up and delete it all; i know how to back up my iTunes but not all my apps and docs because i don't have an external drive yet. thanks

The best spyware blocker: Use FireFox
It never ceases to amaze me. I can use Firefox for months then do a scan with an anti-spyware program and not find anything. I can use Internet Explorer for ten minutes and then do a spyware scan and find stuff. This is not an exaggeration by the way. So far as anti-spyware programs go... Microsoft's Windows Defender has been consistently rated fairly high and it's free. I've been using it and have been happy with it since it's early beta days. The general rule for anti-spyware programs is that you should use more than one (in case one misses something that another may find)... Just to clarify on that... this is for anti-spyware programs ONLY. You should NOT run more than one anti-virus program as they can conflict with each other.

  • Wanting to know about gaming performance on boot camp

Hello I have an Intel imac 20” with 2 GHz core 2 duo processer 2 GB of ram and ATI Radeon HD 2400 128 MB.
And I will be getting leopard here soon but I basically want it for boot camp so I can play games on my Mac. I have played some games on my Mac but they run very poorly I downloaded unreal tournament 2003 and I couldn’t even run it, the frame rate was terrible it was the same for DOOM 3 it was extremely choppy even on low settings. I am wanting to play games like Command & Conquer 3 which I would just buy the one for Mac computers but after running the games I listed above I don’t think it will work at all is it my hardware or would I be able to run new pc games if I had windows through boot camp?
Any help would be greatly appreciative thanks.

Please note for a start that I am a beginner with Macs - only had my 24"iMac for 3 months, never paid much attention to Macs before. (But been playing with PCs and earlier things since they came out, spent 50 years or so with computing software and hardware). I got an iMac for reasons similar to yours, it seems - wanted the stability of the Mac platform (etc etc), but wanted to play 'real' games.
I set up a 250GB NTFS partition with Boot Camp (& iPartition), installed XP Pro SP2. Been loading and testing 19 assorted games that I like - mostly RPG/FPS, old and new. Of these 3 have NOT worked at all so far, 4 have worked with a bit of fiddling, the rest worked right off. Recent ones such as Guild Wars, The Witcher, Dark Messiah, Dungeon Siege 2, Hellgate London, Assassins Creed, Age of Conan:Hyborian Adventures & Overlord work just fine. Great graphics, decent frame rates, excellent sound. The only 'recent' game that is giving me problems is Elder Scrolls: Oblivion - but that gives everyone problems on PCs too! Especially as its useless as an RPG out of the box, needs extensive mods added that obviously cause problems. Some older games refuse to work - Might & Magic 7, Dungeon Keeper 2, are examples. I have yet to try DOSBox with the older games. The games requiring a bit of fiddling usually needed running in a 'compatibility mode', Win95 or Win98/Me.
I did have a very poor wireless data rate initially, using Airport (to my access point on the router). Seems a common complaint on these forums. I fixed it (eventually) by turning off Airport, using Ethernet to the router.
We seem not to play the same games - but if you have specific questions, drop me a line and I shall try to help. I am very happy myself with the iMac as a gaming platform. Room for improvements from Apple? - better keyboard mapping for some of the PC games; better audio level control; fewer wireless problems.

  • Can I play Guild Wars 2 without Bootcamp?

    Hey guys,
I've been thinking about trying Guild Wars 2 since it now has an OS X client, and I was wondering if my computer could actually run it. I don't mind being on the lowest possible settings as long as gameplay is still smooth.
I have the 15 inch MBP early 2011 model.
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6490M
    OS X 10.8.4

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You shouldn't have any problem because your Mac has got a dedicated GPU that can run the game without any problem. Anyway, look at the requirements of the game and see if it has got a OS X version. If so, you don't need to install Windows in Boot Camp.
In the case that you can only use it in Windows, there are applications like CrossOver that allows you to run Windows applications in OS X, but they don't work correctly

  • Hi guys i used boot camp and turned my mac into windows and i wanted to play a pc game on the windows and i cant find a proper program to actually setup the game someone help me please

hi guys i used boot camp and turned my mac into windows and i wanted to play a pc game called guild wars 2 and i cant find a proper program to actually setup the game

Only if you decide to share with us your particular situation. Guild Wars should install and run like any other Game. Other than the Game Installer, Games don't need some other installer to make them work. Only someone who reads the instructions for the proper installation.

  • To install Windows 8 OS on a new iMac using Boot Camp, what size "partition" should I allocate for Windows on a system with 3TB Fusion drive?

I am trying to install Windows on a new iMac w/3TB Fusion drive. The system crashed on my first attempt but appears to have partitioned the drive correctly before crashing???  So, what size partition does Windows 8 need to operate effectively?  Is "more" better??? or just over-kill?  And, has anyone installed Winodow 8 on an iMac...and how did it work?  Would apps like "Parallel Desktop" or "VM Ware Fusion" be a good idea and troubleless?
I will try again but not too confident that it may get worse before it gets better.
    Regards....?
P.S.  I configured this iMac with the i7 processor 3.5GHz with Turbo Boost to 3,9GHz.  When I select "About this Mac" it diplays my i7 processor as a 3.4GHz instead.  Do you think they ran out of the i7 3.5GHz and shoved a i5 3.4Ghz in the iMac to meet deliver schedule???  I there a way to check the real-time speed of my processor??.

It depends on your uses. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3321 Windows 8 works properly in Boot Camp, always that your iMac is compatible > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US You can only use the 64-bit Windows 8 edition.
Respecting to your processor, you may want to contact with Apple, as they may have sent you the iMac with a wrong processor

  • Boot-camp and windows

I have been reading many things about boot-camp. I would like to install windows on my mac so I can use certain applications for school and what not. I understand there are some risks involved. My questions are:
    1) Viruses, spy-ware, etc....does it make os X in harms way?
    2) Difficulty of installing and uninstalling?
    3) Any suggestions or things to look out for before I do this?
    4) Any other software other than boot-camp or is that the best?
    5) How much disc space should I allocate to install windows on the second partition?
    6) Is there away to free some space on my hardrive...I heard that os X installs all types of drivers, etc that I will probably never use?
Please help with anything else before I make my final decision on this topic!!

    Hello again
    1) Viruses, spy-ware, etc....does it make os X in harms way?
No, but your Windows installation (using BootCamp, Parallels or VMware...) can be harmed as any windows.
    2) Difficulty of installing and uninstalling?
Quite easy, Apple provides easy to use tools (BootCamp) that lets you create, resize, or delete Windows partition. About Parallels and VMware, both are easy to use, my father-in-law get used to it quite quickly
    3) Any suggestions or things to look out for before I do this?
Go ahead, without risks, no fun ! Seriously, the risk is quite limited and I red not much reports about people crashing their mac with windows... In fact I did, but the guy is a bit geeky, and used Parallels in BootCamp mode, avoid that, Parallels still a beta.
    4) Any other software other than boot-camp or is that the best?
Personally, I love Parallels Desktop, it worth the price
    5) How much disc space should I allocate to install windows on the second partition?
10G is a good starting point. The interest of virtualization solutions (Parallels, VMware...) is that only the effective space is taken on disk and the disk growth when you need it, automatically
    6) Is there away to free some space on my hardrive...I heard that os X installs all types of drivers, etc that I will probably never use?
It is true that you certainly do not need additionnal languages, additional fonts, Hebrew, Chinese, Arabic, etc This is a choice to care at the installation, and not very easy to remove that afterwhile. My advice is to live with it.
Please help with anything else before I make my final decision on this topic!!

  • I'm desperately needing advice to a common question.  I use Quicken and love it.  But the Mac version is not as great as the PC.   Has anyone installed it by segmenting their Mac with Parallels or Fusion or Boot camp.  If so, which one do you recommend.

I'm desperately needing advice.  New Mac.   Used Quicken on my PC.  Researched all software for Financial programs and Quicken is still the most recommended.   I want to use Quicken on my Mac.  The Mac version is not highly rated so I would need to partition my Mac.   Has anyone done this for their quicken program and if so, which partitioning program did you use - Parallels, Fusion ware or Boot camp?
    Thx

Thanks.  Hadn't heard of it. ?  Is there any concern installing this free program on my Mac.    Have you used it?  Apart from being free is there any other advantage of Parallels and VMfusion. ?
Virtual Box is safe and well developed, it offers similar or identical features to the paid competition, it may be a little less polished but that's all.
Download and try it out, nothing to lose (except time).

  • Games in Boot Camp smooth VERSUS games in OS X choppy

    Hey.
I have a Late 2008 Macbook Pro, mid-range model. I have Call of Duty 4 for both Mac OS X, and Windows XP through Boot Camp. I have all the proper drivers installed on Windows.
When I run CoD4 on Mac OS X, the framerate is choppy even on the lowest graphics settings. On the higher graphics settings, forget about it. I have the high-end graphics card enabled.
When I run CoD4 on Windows XP, you would think I was playing an Xbox 360. On the highest settings, the game runs at at maybe 40fps, smooth as butter.
Why is this the case? Is it the quality of the Call of Duty 4 port itself that causes the game to run poorly? Is it a driver issue?
(I have also tested other games on Windows XP, and they all without exception ran amazingly fast. Gears of War and Bioshock, both on highest settings, ran almost perfectly.)

Ok, I thought my Uni MBP was defective, because I have the same problem with CoD4. The game is choppy, and forget playing at high rez. I had the better performance on.
According to CoD4 ingame optimizer, the optimal setting for my spec should be 1024x768 rez. And even then, it would get choppy, especially during graphic heavy scene. The weird thing is, when I minimize the game to check the CPU usage via istat, cpu isnt maxed out at all (around 70% per core).
I was reading some posts on Macrumors, and other people have the same problem with not just CoD, but with Spore and WoW. On the other hand, some people say they can play CoD4 at high rez with most settings turned on and still get 40+ fps.
I ran hardware test last night and it didnt find anything wrong (which it also did ram test).

  • How to "Recreate Boot Camp"?

I have just upgraded Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
I also had to upgrade VM Ware Fusion to 5.0.
Now, when I attempt to run VM Ware Fusion I get the following message:
Your Boot Camp installation has been modified since you last accessed it.
Move the Boot Camp virtual machine to the trash then select "Run Boot Camp" to recreate it. This will not affect the Windows applications or data on your Boot Camp partition.
I have dragged the Boot Camp virtual machine to the trash but I don't understand what is meant by "...select "Run Boot Camp" to recreate it".
Select "Run Boot Camp" from where?
I have tried shutting down the computer and booting from the Boot Camp partition, shutting down again, restarting normally and attempting to run VM Ware Fusion again but I get the same message (above).

I had the same problem upgrading from VMware 5.0.0 to 5.0.4 with Mavericks. I found the message from Fussion a long way short of helpful and this forum much more so.
I would add that witn VMware Fussion running choose Virtual Machine Library from the Window menu tab and from there delte the Boot Campl viritual machine and create (add) a new one. I did not have to reinstall windows or any applications.
I'm sure VMware could make this more obvious in their upgrade process.

  • Problem with starting Boot camp

    Hi all,
when i try to use boot camp assistant(open boot camp assistant and click continue) it say 'you must update your system soft ware before using this setup assistant' evebn though I have updated by system using Software update option. Please help out with this problem.
    Thanks..

    This solved my problem...
I recommend going into your Disk Utility and under your hard drive on the left side click on the macintosh HD and then on the top make sure you have Journaling 'enabled.' (It's highlighted in green on the top menu bar in the disk utility box.)

  • Boot Camp, Medieval II, and Erractic Performance.  Root cause?

    Hello all,
I am currently having a very bizarre problem with my new 2.4GHz late 2008 MacBook (4GB RAM), running Boot Camp w/ XP.
The only application I have installed on the windows partition is Medieval II: Total War. My MacBook meets the system reqs for it (the recommended, not just the minimum required), and the first time I booted up the game, it was fast & smooth with all the graphics options maxed out.
I played a few more "battles," each time with maximum army sizes, and still no problems, it ran smooth as silk.
Now all of a sudden over the past two days, any attempted "battle" portion of the game just chugs along, completely unplayable. Moving all the settings to "low" changes nothing, still the same paltry performance.
I am mainly wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar with Boot Camp and gaming. Just a sudden drop in performance for seemingly non-in-game related causes.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, as I'm at a complete loss!
    Thanks in advance.

I played Medieval II quite a lot a while back in XP on my iMac and never had any such issue with it. Not long ago I got a late 2k8 MacBook spec'd identically to yours. I've not tried Medieval II on it, but if I get time over the weekend I'll give it a shot and see if I can replicate your problem.
