Guild-Wars on Arch

I wasn't sure where to put this thread since there's no gaming section.  But anyway, I want to run guild-wars on my arch laptop.. any suggestions on how to do that?  I saw that it works with Cedega 4.3 but details are sparse.  I don't even really know how to get Cedega if I wanted it.  Anyone have any experience with somewhat complex game installs?  Should I try with wine first?

I think it looks great. I've already ordered it! coming next week....
phrak... how do you intend to try it? do you mean you've already bought it? cause I don't think there's a demo anymore
download the client from guildwars.com and pay for an account at plaync.com (it's the same people who did AO, CoH, LineageII, etc - all of which I just bought online like that)
BTW I did just buy it...
I'm going to play it tonight

  • Crazy Guild Wars/WINE/Graphics Problem

Recently I've gotten back into Guild Wars (and subsequently dropped off the forums like a stone), but I have a very bizarre issue with it. Every so often, and I have no idea why because error reports haven't turned up anything, I get a graphics failure, the monitor turns off as if it isn't receiving a signal or one of the sync rates is too high, and a fan in my computer, presumably on the graphics card, becomes audibly louder and faster. This only happens with Guild Wars on WINE, nothing else will cause it to occur. Also, it doesn't happen at precise intervals or after a certain number of hours, it seems to be completely random. I've had it happen on load, 5 minutes in, a few hours in, and on a day off where I was just being lazy, I had ten straight hours of gameplay and no problems whatsoever. I've gone over all of my logs, and absolutely nothing is turning up to clue me into the problem.
My computer is quite new, I purchased it this April. It has an Nvidia 9600GT graphics card, the drivers for which have been out of beta for a while now and have acted quite well with everything else, including Quake 4, ET:QW, Prey on WINE, and Mount&Blade on WINE. Previously I was using the Nvidia installer to handle the driver, but both it and the Arch package have the same problem, in case there was any doubt there.
Any help is very much appreciated, and while the problem may not best be suited to these forums, even getting the slightest hint as to what could be going on would be great help, as I'm completely in the dark on this one.

Launching the game with WINEDEBUG=+all wine Gw.exe causes so much debugging information to pass that it slows the entire process to a crawl. It took two full minutes to even display the GW "connecting to ArenaNet" window to appear, much less connect and complete, something which usually takes 1-3 seconds max. It would be impossible to test the game itself properly, if at all, with that option set.
I can also confirm now that using the xorg.conf fix won't solve the problem, as 10 minutes in I had another blackout. That fix seems to be for a much older 5200 card on a CRT though, the solution for which is not going to mesh as well with a 9600 running a 22" LCD.
It could also be an issue with the monitor now that I think of it, which is an LG 226WTY @1680x1050, but I have my doubts that it lies at the bottom of all this, as I've heard MPD stop playing when I've had it on and this problem has occured, so I think it has something to do with the system itself, be it kernel or internal hardware, more than the monitor.
Thanks for the ideas though, too bad they didn't solve the issue.
P.S. The more I think about it this might very well be a kernel+WINE issue, as I'm also unable to ctrl+alt+backspace out of X to the command line when the blackout occurs, which could mean the keyboard is being disabled by a kernel panic of some kind, thus causing the problem with the graphics card. Nothing has appeared in the logs though, which is odd.

  • Guild Wars 2 client updating on Windows 7 Boot Camp

I originally downloaded and installed Guild Wars 2 client and updated with no problem. I've played the game and everything ran fine. I wanted to make a larger partition for my windows, so I went through the entire process of deleting the windows partition and creating a new one and then installing windows 7 Home Premium on it. After the clean install I downloaded the Guild Wars 2 client just fine, but when it attempts to update, it only updates for about 4 seconds to around 1MB of data. I use a direct ethernet connection The error says "Download Failed! Please check your internet connection and try again." The update continually builds off of the download so I'm almost done downloading the whole update (16GB) but it shouldn't have any problems maintaining it's connection. I have no firewall on and no antivirus even installed since i'm not using this computer for anything else until I figure out the problem. I tried other games to see if it was an overall problem, but I can update and play The Secret World and Tera with zero problems as well as other offline games that require patches like Dragon Age 2 and Sniper Elite V2. It can't be something simple since I've already contacted my ISP to make sure there was no throttling or blocks on their end and I've been contacting Arenanet technical support and they don't have any ideas for windows boot camp issues.
Any ideas on what could be the issue? The common firewall, antivirus, and ISP possibilities have been troubleshot to death.

you should be using Microsoft Security Essentials, regardless, or something for firewall besides your router, though that should be doing some of the work.
Windows on Mac aka "Boot Camp" is just to partition and motherboard drivers, otherwise it is maybe 95% same as a PC (sans BIOS for EFI).
You could of course bought WinClone or Paragon CampTuneX $20 to resize the old partitions.
Download managers and torrent-type with what ports it uses etc are not my area (torrents are funny, your IP address is out there for all to see and find which is one reason to not turn off firewalls and everything).

  • Guild Wars 2 : Standard Edition?

Now we have ourselves a release date.
Will Best Buy be selling a physical copy of the standard edition of Guild Wars 2? Will it be available for prepurchase and/or preorder?
I'm NOT interested in getting the digital edition or the collectors edition, just interested in getting a standard edition and I have a best buy gift card I've been saving for this exact product. So, can anyone drop any information on whether BB has ponied up or are they just sticking to the digital edition that they are currently selling.
    Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure what all factored in to us not carrying the physical version but I believe it had something to do with vendor agreements.  I totally understand the desire to have something physical in your hands, especially when you are all pumped for a new game release.  There's something traditional about it.  I know our Merchandizing team is aware of the demand out there for the physical version of Guild Wars 2 but it doesn't look like we'll be able to accommodate it at this time.

  • Any problems with heat and fan noise on Guild Wars 2 Macbook Pro retina?

I am thinking to start Guild Wars 2 Mac beta on my Macbook pro retina, but i have been reading in different forums that it heats up the system and that the fan kicks off really loud when playing the game. Anyone has any experience on this? Any guild wars 2 gamers please give me some feedback.

I have been playing GW2 for a while now on Beta. The game runs choppier than windows but I think that's because it's a Beta version. I bet after they finish optimizing it things should change, even heat.
As for the heat, it gets super hot. So hot the keyboard gets hot, and when I push in the keys, I feel heat. It's warm enough to cause concern. I don't know if it's bad or not, but the dude at the Apple Genius/Store said, the MBPR knows when it gets too hot and it'll let you know. He said if it plays and nothing is warning me then it's fine. The MBPR won't allow itself to go to catastrophic failure due to heat.
So I took his advice and have played. Just Monday (October 1st 2012) I played for a good 5 hours non-stop and nothing came up so if the Apple Genius guy is correct then I wouldn't worry about it. I do have AppleCare so if something does fail then I will blame the apple genius guy.
It's a fun game, my first MMO, but it's too hard for me sometimes. I don't like that

  • MacBook Pro and Guild Wars 2?

I want to purchase a MacBook Pro for my son to use at college next year. He'll be pursuing and engineering degree, but is also a big PC gamer.
    1. Are the 13" MacBook Pros capable of playing PC games like Guild Wars 2 and WOW?
    2. What's the best way to run PC games on a Mac–Bootcamp, Parallels, or Fusion?
    3. What's the best/most affordable MacBook Pro configuration I can get away with?
    Thanks!

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with wjosten on this one. Macs can be great gaming machines. For example, the iMacs always have the 2nd best mobile graphics chipset available. The same can't be said for the MacBooks Pros, but if you take wjosten's advice, you won't have the luxury of the Mac OS either. I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro, and I play Guild Wars 2 under Boot Camp. I can play it on medium-low graphics settings with no lag, and it still looks great. I have also installed it on the Mac side using Winskin, but that's much more complex, and the results aren't as good. If you opt for the cheapest 15" MBP, you'll get a dedicated graphics chipset that will be able to play the game on high graphics settings no problem. Do the kid a favor and get him a Mac, and not a PC...

  • Guild Wars 2 installation question

Sorry if this has already been answered, but can anyone confirm that if you purchase the digital copy of Guild Wars 2 from Best Buy, you'll be able to just take the key code and create an account at NCSOFT and just download the game files from them?
    Thank you in advance,
    melon
P.S. If the answer is no to my above question, Is there a way to download the game files without having to use the Best Buy PC App?

So for anyone that ordered Guild Wars 2 before the end of March 2012 as a physical copy regular edition , which coincidentally the guys at Guild Wars 2 said retailers would have the keys ready for them for the upcoming beta weekend,
     IS SCREWWWWWED.
You will not play until that box is at the store, but Ive just been notified by private messages, thats how things go down here, that the only way to change this is to RE- Order the Guild Wars 2 digital version.
For those of you who cannot just "re order" you are screwed until the box arrives at the nearest best buy location, so no beta weekends or bonuses for you, just the thought that you were told by a company and retailers that you could achieve something for GIVING THEM MONEY.
Order a copy from GameStopzzz, Or the official site, but just a reminder dont have any family members give you best buy gift cards. It'll just lead you down the firey spiral hellz hole that NCSoft and the bezzt buyzzz community team have failed to answer very simply.  ESPECIALLY CUSTOMER SUPPORT.
Thank you for not letting this game be played and setup in the easiest of fashions.

  • Guild Wars 2 Available On Apple Inc.

    Hello.
Apple Community, Simple Quick Question? When Would The Availability For Guild Wars 2 Become A Success For Apple Products? Realistically Here There Are Several Components That Need To Be Fixed And I Do Realize That But Instead, Please Provide Me With Facts And Statistics Upon Having Just Everyone's Opinion.
Understand That This Would Become Difficult For Apple Inc. To Provide The Software And Functionality To Work With Guild Wars 2, But Would Be Simpler And Most Effective Instead Of Using BootCamp.
    Thank, You
    Sincerely, Ei.S

Guild Wars 2 can be installed on a MacBook Pro ( Mid-2009 ) using Wine; however, there was some issues with the graphics ( the rain in te charr area was erasing the background ) that will most likely be heavily worked on by the developers of wine, and companies that use it such as crossover.

  • Can I play Guild Wars 2 without Bootcamp?

    Hey guys,
I've been thinking about trying Guild Wars 2 since it now has an OS X client, and I was wondering if my computer could actually run it. I don't mind being on the lowest possible settings as long as gameplay is still smooth.
I have the 15 inch MBP early 2011 model.
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6490M
    OS X 10.8.4

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You shouldn't have any problem because your Mac has got a dedicated GPU that can run the game without any problem. Anyway, look at the requirements of the game and see if it has got a OS X version. If so, you don't need to install Windows in Boot Camp.
In the case that you can only use it in Windows, there are applications like CrossOver that allows you to run Windows applications in OS X, but they don't work correctly

have you tried msi vga drivers for your card?
do you have such issues elsewhere?
well i haven't tried using the drive that come within the bundle yet
but as i mentioned before, i did not have any problem playing GW2 and other games
with my previous card (4870) and using exactly the same rig,
so i don't think the problem lies elsewhere,
but i think ill try msi vga driver that i got in the cd 1st,
thanks for your suggestion, ill report again the result later.
tried the msi vga drive (ver. 8.95) that come within the budle

  • Guild Wars & Boot Camp

    I hope someone can help.
I've been playing GW for over 2 year and just switched to Mac Book Pro 15" as my main computer. I did a trial version of VMWare to see if GW would run. Considering that the version of XP I was using (XP Pro 64 bit) I could log in and play but the graphics weren't up to par(really bad).
Since then I deleted VMWare off my computer when the trial expired and went out and bought Win XP Home Ed. SP 2 full version, so I would have a proper verion of Windoze to use. I installed and ran Boot camp no problems, installed Windoze, so far so good. Installed drivers (from the Apple provided disc) and game.
When I log in now graphics kick any of my PCs video to the curb, but the game keeps crashing the only message I get is: "Error! Disk Full." Sometimes the error pops up right away sometime it can take 10 minutes to appear, reguardless if I am staying put in the scene or running around doing a mission.
This is what I have tried with no luck:
Dailing the graphics in the game down all the way
Trying 3rd party newer graphics driver verisons
Other NVidia drivers found on Apple website
Driver Agent(website) said my graphic drivers are fine.
(I went graphics heavy route since Arena Net is blaming the graphics drivers for the error).
    My XP setup is:
20GB HD size with 10.3 GB free
    1.98GB of RAM
Wired connection to my AirPort Extreme Router.
Am I on a wild goose chase looking at the graphics as an issue?
Does anyone else have any tips that might help?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice.
    Jenn

I have heard that the recommended size for the XP partition is 30 GB for purposes of virtual memory. You may want to try increasing the XP partition to 30 GB. I am not sure if that will require formatting that partition and reinstalling XP, or if you can do it with disk utility.

  • Yet Another Guild Wars 2 Problem

Hey, so I ordered the Digital Version about 4 hours ago and I downloaded the BB app and everything. Now I know people are having trouble opening up the app, but mine seems to be working fine. The problem here is that my order still says it's "in process."  My friend ordered the game last night and said he recieved his second email within 20 minutes with the serial number to join the GW2 beta. Why is my email taking so long?

I ordered the Digital Deluxe Version exactly 4 hours ago and I downloaded the BB app and everything is good to this point. The app seems to be working fine, I am logged in at least. The problem here is that my order still says it's "in process."  I paid $80 for this product and I have been a loyal Best Buy customer for over 20 years now, but a seemingly simple Digital Download not even starting after 4 hours is absurd.
Why is my game email taking so long? It seems that the whole point of Digital Downloads are to make it easier for the store employees and the customer. I could have driven to the store, actually I could have crawled to the store and back home by now.
I emailed Customer Support and hour ago and so far I have only received this message:
    Best Buy Customer,

  • Guid Wars 2 digital download - downloading in the future?

I want to buy GW2 through Best Buy (because I have gift cards, and I'd like to use them) but I worry about what will happen in the future if I wipe my PC or buy a new one.  Will I ALWAYS have to download it from Best Buy or can I download it from the Guild Wars 2 website itself, since I will have an active account?
I know that's how WoW works (once you buy it, you can download it anytime off their website) so I was curious if it would work the same with Guild Wars 2.  I've never bought a digital download game from Best Buy so I'm not really familiar with the process.
    Thanks for the help!

So I had this exact situation. I pre-ordered GW2 back at the end of April and was able to download it and it installed just fine. Well this weekend I reinstalled Windows 7 on my new SSD hard drive and when I reinstalled the BB PC App the "My Downloads" tab is completely empty. When I tried to submit a help request it says that it cannot find my order number. I have he original email so I know what it is but it is not working. What can I do?

  • [SOLVED] Graphic Corruption with 3D and Wine 1.3.8 + Catalyst 10.11

    Hello!
I'm getting graphic corruption with 3D games on my Arch Linux configuration using Wine and Catalyst. Tried World of Warcraft (also with opengl rendering) and Guild Wars - graphics look stretched and teared.
    Using ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I get same problem with guildwars in fullscreen when entering character select. I have to ctrl-alt-F1 to tty then back to get rid of the garbled graphics. Then my characters vanishes except for their armor/effects. Going into windowed mode stops the garbling of the graphics but the bodyless avatars remain. There is one error stands out in wine output but can't find anything specific to this error that helps.
