Guitar - Laptop

How do i connect my electric guitar to my MacBook Pro with garageband, i spoke to a mac guy at the sound expo today and he said i could create an efficient link with just one wire (but for a better quality i would need a soundcard). So i have tried this but it dosent work, i have also tried using my amp as a preamp but that didnt work either. Every time i try the internal speakers pick uo the sound (i have also tried changing the sound input to line in). In Garageband help it says i can simply connect the guitar to the audio input (where is it, does my macbookpro have one - i have tried all the inputs i can)???
Help me please,
Thanks

I don't have a macbook pro but i do have a g5 and understand they have similar audio inputs. The macbook pro i believe has a headphone 1/8" port and another input port on the side. There are two ways i have recorded into gb using my "mini" (don't know the technical term, sorry) input in gb.
1. using an adapter that takes your guitar cord and adapts it to the 1/8" input on the computer
2. using an audio interface (i have an m-audio mobile pre usb) which allows you to plug right into it. The product connects to the computer using usb and requires you to install drivers.
I think the main thing you need to do is check your audio input/outputs on the computer in system preferences. Go to sys prefs/sound/input and be sure you're set to the correct input. In your case it should be "line in"...gb also has a similar setting under garageband/preferences/audio&midi - make sure you check that, too.
let me know if that helps and provide a little more info on your setup.

  • Plugging my guitar into my interface, i have huge latency problem en gb 08, mac laptop os5.8

please help, when I plug my guitar directly into my  tascam us 144 interface the latency problem makes it  almost impossible to record a decent track. I am using  GB 08 on a mac laptop with  OS 5.8

You can, with the right sort of connector, physically plug a lead from your guitar directly into the MacBook. The problem, as I understand it, is that the signal produced by your guitar (Hi-Z) is not what your MacBook's input jack is designed for (line level). You need something like a direct box or an effects unit that will boost the guitar signal to line level (depending on the make/model, even some stompboxes may do this) or a cheapo audio interface that provides at least a Hi-Z input for your guitar and a line-level output from which to run a cable to your MacBook's line-level input; you can also plug your guitar into something like the M-Audio Jamlab which goes into your MacBook via USB.

  • Want to hook up my laptop with guitar amp to hear garageband effects

I have a MBP (early 2008) and use garageband with a blue snowflake microphone and headphones to record. However, I was wondering if it would possible to have my laptop hooked up to my Marshall MG10 CF amp when I am in garageband just messing around with the many effects that it offers and having the effects from my guitar come out the amp speaker (without having to use headphones. I hope my explanation is clear.

You should be able to use a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter to plug the guitar into the audio input on your mac.  Then run the audio output to your amps guitar input or it's mp3 player input.

  • Is it possible to use the guitar amp featuer of GarageBand (iOS) while in a different app?

I love the guitar amp feature of GarageBand; I hook my electric up to my iPad via an iRig interface all the time. I'd like GarageBand to continue to function as the guitar amplifier function while I'm in another app where I can read my tablature and play along. I don't really feel like printing my music out on paper with all this great technology, and it seems silly that I'd have to add another iDevice or Laptop just to be able to read a text file or Safari while GarageBand fuzzes up my guitar. Thanks for any advice.

  • I cant get a signal from my line in when I connect my guitar directly into the input jack

I have several electric guitars. I set the GarageBand (and system preference) settings to the "line-in input" in garage band and have plugged my guitar directly into my MacBook Pro using a regular guitar cable and a reducer to fit the laptop input. I have had no luck getting any sort of signal out of this. When I spoke with the guys at the Genius Bar they said I should be able to plug right in. I think I may need an amplifier or something because I don't think any juice is getting to my pickups. Is there something I am missing?

Your pickups don't need any "juice" to work, but still your signal might be too low for a decent recording. Apple keeps advertising that you could just plug your guitar into the computer, but it doesn't work for most people. Try to run your guitar through anything that amplifies it - a pre-amp, for example, or your stereo.

  • Recording with guitar to computer through USB X-Fi

I am having a problem trying to record with my guitar through my USB X-Fi 5.. I am using a program called Audacity to capture the recording. I have my guitar hooked up to a Line 6 POD 2.0 effects device that has a left/right output. Then I plugged the /8th male end running from that into the Line-In port on the USB X-Fi 5. and then to my computer via USB. But I cannot hear my guitar when playing and it will not capture the recording. I basically bought the USB X-Fi 5. because when recording with my guitar I thought that my laptops sound card was making the recording of low quality. So I got the USB X-Fi 5. to help that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Message Edited by BulletFMV on 2-06-2008 03:42 PMMessage Edited by BulletFMV on 2-06-2008 03:43 PM

That USB audio interface isn't any better for recording from onboard sound. You should have bought least the Creative E-MU 0202 USB (if you prefer Creative products/USB audio interfaces).
With your current setup, instead of using Audacity, you could try, say, Cockos Reaper + Asio4All driver.

In any case, remember also read the software documentation as well ... all needed information for recording task is normally guided there in user manual(s).

  • The Simplest way to record acoustic guitar/vocals

I'm no musician, but I have a MBP C2D and I want to record my grandpa playing guitar and singing with GB. He won't be around forever and all I want to do is preserve some of his music for our family.
Can someone please tell me what I need to acomplish this? He doesn't even have an electric acoustic so we'll have to buy a pickup for it because he insists on using his guitar.
I don't have a lot of money to spend after buying the MBP so just let me know what the essentials are for this one.
    Thanks in advance!

Assuming you have the mic already, we can easily stay under $100.
This Behringer Mixer is about $30.
If you don't have a mic, then take a look at this Studio Condenser Mic with USB Output for about $80 (nothing else needed)
And of course there's the mic built-in to the laptop, but quality there will be lacking.

  • Guitar and USB SB Live! 24-bit Exter

    Hallo all,
I was eager to buy the aforementioned SB model (USB SB Li've! 24-bit External) as my laptop doesn't seem to get any input from my guitar through the embedded sound card.
I was wondering, as this is the primary and only reason for me to buy this model, if I could plug my guitar in the input jack and record from there, or if a little amp is needed (as for other cards).
    Any idea?
Thanks in advance for any kind response,

    Hi
When you use LineIn for guitar you propably need a preamp (Guitar amp with LineOut, DI
    box, POD, Mixer, ...).
If you use MicLine then you propably get a weak sound (set mic boosting +20dB, if there
is this setting on Li've! software).
Check also settings on Creative Mixer (input source, rec source, and levels).
(I do not have this card/software so I'm not sure 'bout what mixer settings you have.)

I've set the audio midi set up to 44100.0hz but still the same.
At first i was using a audio interface (Tascam US-122) when the error came out. But then i tried to plug the guitar directly to the laptop. Still the same error came out. Do take note that all other applications are closed.

  • Any guitarists using Mainstage/Guitar Amp Pro in live situations??

I'm getting ready to purchase Logic Studio(as soon as my pc sells), and I was wondering if anyone is using Mainstage as a guitar rig for live situations. Is Guitar Amp Pro "tweakable" enough to get good results out of? I'd love to have GuitarRig3, but, that won't be in the budget for a while. Any thoughts?

I've been using it with an acoustic bass. It's a little different from your situation but I can say that it's pretty fun. having all these sounds on command is a blast.
That said using a computer for some effects is one thing, using it to get a nice tube like distorted and/or warm sound is another. Unless you want to spend a few grand on a serious converter and preamp you probably won't be really matching a real analog sound in the real world flesh-space. The converter/interface and how you preamp it into the converter will make a huge difference in the sound. A lot of cheaper effect pedals are already using digital converters (bad ones) so if this is your baseline you could do much better with Mainstage easily. If you are trying to replace an 'all analog guitar straight into a tube amp' kind of sound you probably won't get it.
I've been using NI GuitarRig some, mostly because I had it before. The Mainstage guitar amps seem a little simple tweeking-wise, but that's just a brief impression on my part.
I use the laptop on an effects loop as an effects processor, and not to achieve my basic sound. The hardware you use around Mainstage can limit the quality of your final sound, so if you are on a budget don't expect to get the ultimate guitar sound by plugging straight into the laptop, or even by using one of the cheaper consumer interfaces.
I've been using an RME expresscard interface - which seems to degrade the sound a little- and I'm trying to replace that and the preamp with a Duet, mostly for size/weight considerations (you just cannot get these types of things for backline, so I gotta bring it with me).
Jump in and start working it out, have as much fun as you can. Maybe use it with your guitar amp as an effects unit. If you run it through the house and monitors at a venue you will get wildly varying results. If it's a critical mission have a way to bypass the computer or have a backup rig/sound handy... It's still a computer and they do weird things. Don't be browsing around the interwebs for pr0n or anything like that on the computer you expect to work for your live rig. Turn off as much network activity as you can. Turn off background apps. Keep the amount of audio and midi programs you install to a minimum. Keep backups. Go nuts.

  • Macbook Pro 13" 2012 wont recognise guitar!

    Hi,
I am new into this whole recording stuff and I am struggling to gain an input from my guitar into my Macbook Pro 2012.  I have just bought a 6.35mm to 3.5mm adapter and used my lead from my acoustic guitar to plug into my mac.  I went into the system preferences and sound output and the only one that appears is the built in microphone.  No line in or anything....just the same setting as before.  Am I doing something really stupid?
    Thanks for the help!

    Hey Delgadoh
Sorry but I have tried all those settings and step by step inputs.  My guitar is just not being recognised, possibly ive just got a bad adaptor or possibly I would need to go through and amplifier first?  The settings just appear with built in microphone.  Here is what I have at the moment...just my guitar and a standard cable with adaptor going into the laptop. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks

  • Caps (ladspa plugins collection for guitar players) doesn't work

    Hi there
Yesterday I finally wanted to try out my new M-Audio Transit with jack and jack-rack and play the guitar a little using ladspa to make a fine distortion. I always preferred caps, because their sound fits my needs best. However, there is no sound coming out of my headphone, when I select an amp simulator (there are several ones of them in caps). The speaker simulators work fine as usual. I didn't try out the modulation plugins. SOOO, what is wrong here?!?! In the first test, I used 48000Hz as samplerate and there were dozens of xruns per second. Switching back to 44100 made it relatively stable, but still no sound.
    Any idea?

    Army wrote:
It works now, reverted it to default CFLAGS line and now caps works fine So the PKGBUILD should contain a

in the build section and modify this line in the Makefile.
do'h! it's so obvious! that's actually the first thing to try. i also haven't thought about that. it seems that all these audio apps have their own flags. i'll change the PKGBUILD today.
redbit wrote:Btw: Do you know any good tutorial for the caps plugins? I'm a total newbie in playing the e-guitar and I can't get any sounds out of it which sound in any way similiar to a normal e-guitar sound.
there are several ways to use these plugins. try jack-rack or you can directly choose them in ardour or i think even in lmms.
with jack-rack: connect your midi input, etc, inside qjackctl with jack-rack, chose the plugins you need in jack-rack and then connect jack-rack to your sound output (PCM or so) or recording app. i use timemachine, but you can also use ardour. but as army said, try try try.
the realtime stuff: are you in the audio group? the limits.conf settings affect only members of the audio group.
the xruns: afaik it depends not directly on the cpu, but on ram and soundcard. 2gb ram should be sufficient, but if you have a totally cheap soundcard that might be a problem. though i used a sb live value soundcard with the emu10k1 chip for some time and i hadn't have any bigger problems, and that's a really cheap card. i don't know what chipsets they use for laptop mainboards. however, if you want to have good sound quality on a laptop you could buy an usb soundcard, but that might get very expensive.
their is no golden way or rule, try that for yourself.

  • Can I use the IRig to plug in my guitar on my mac book Pro or it just works in ipad, ipod and iphone?

Can I use the IRig to plug in my guitar on my mac book Pro or it just works in ipad, ipod and iphone?

    From their website:
Got a Mac? Get an iRig!
Now for the hidden features… if you have a newer Mac computer, you can use the iRig as an audio interface for it. The newer Mac models feature a headphone jack that act as a headphone/microphone input for headsets. This means that you can also use your iRig with your Mac laptop or desktop machine to take advantage of the higher processing power of your machine and you don't need an additional audio interface to use it. Simply plug the iRig into your headphone jack, plug your headphones/line out into your iRig and you've got a fully functioning audio interface for guitar/bass/keyboards, or any other instrument with a ¼" out. Pretty cool.

  • How do you input guitar in GarageBand on iMac

I've tried to input my guitar into GarageBand on my iMac, but have not been very successful. How can i do this?  I have iRig, and plug it into the back port, but that doesn't work.  I also have a USB Guitar Link that works with Amplitube 3 that is on the same iMac, but doesn't work with GarageBand.  I've tried changing the input choices under preferences, but no luck.  With the USB Guitar Link, the Audio Preferences menu gives me the choice of "USB Audio CODEC" and I choose that...but, that doesn't work either.  The ONLY thing that has worked is the "Built-In Microphone"...but that records everything in the room...and its of very low quality.  Any help is appreciated.

the iMac has separate input and output jacks, it does not work like your laptop's jack

  • Help recording guitar

first of all, let me say i am new to this and completely clueless about recording in general.
i just want to record some guitar and maybe some voice tracks.
i realize i need a lot more equipment and better hardware and software, but i'm not looking for studio quality recordings at this point, just something half way decent i can listen to.
i have no equipment besides my laptop hp g60-120us 2ghz,  4gb ram, and a samson g track usb microphone that i just bought.
could someone please show me how to set up adobe audition and my laptop properly so that i can get the most out of what limited equipment i have.
when i record now, i get a lot of white noise in the background...how would i go about getting rid of the white noise?
do i needs a asio driver?

Welcome! I could have a go at this, starting from the bottom:
You do need an ASIO driver to work well with modern soundcards and get realtime playback for overdubs.
The white noise may very well stem from the internal sound circuit or from level mismatch, or both. You should not use the internal sound input for any serious recording; it's not what it's meant for and the quality doesn't stand up.
Samson makes good stuff, and the mic itself is probably fine. You will however run into trouble using it as USB device togheter with another sound device; this is a limitation within the current ASIO technology (see below).
You do need a proper soundcard, like the M-Audio FastTrack
    - which is just as a suggestion. There are many products to choose from for little money now. For your use it must have at least one mic input AND a guitar input (often labeled Hi-z or Instrument as well). Typically one input will double as mic / guitar.
Install its driver - typically before you even connect the device! - and then when everything is clear, open Audition and select it as your input/output device. This is described in the Audition manual.
You do need to connect your speakers and/or headphones to this soundcard now. With ASIO you do need to use the same device for both input and output. I am not sure if you can use your Samson USB mic in this setup. If it has an ordinary audio connection, just connect that to the soundcard.
Recording is simple: Point to a track, select an input, arm for record (red R), Record...
Overdubs: turn OFF the previous red R, point to a new track, do the same as above.
You may want to record the guitar with some effects on (distortion, chorus, whatever). Click on the Fx button just above the track headers, and from the Fx Rack you can select an effect to add to your track. Audition has some basic electric guitar effects built in, for starters.
You can even add reverb on your vocals the same way. I recommend the Studio Reverb effect here, since it won't strangle your computer as fast...
At the lower right corner of your Audition screen, check that 'Audition Mix' is selected!
There's much to be found about recording in general on the net, but the Audition manual is also a worthwhile read.
