Guitar Line-in Help!

So I'm trying to record my guitar with GarageBand 3.0.4. I bought the guitar cable that goes from 1/4" to 1/8". My guitar is plugged into my input jack right next to my headphone jack. I went to system pref --> Sound and selected Line-in from the list. I strum my guitar and see it register (it registers more with the Line-in than with the built in mic, so I know it's getting the input from my guitar). BUT GarageBand STILL uses my built-in mic to record instead of my Line-in guitar. Any suggestions? Is there a setting in GarageBand I don't know about?

i want to downgrade my 2011 mac mini server to mac os x i have the disks but the mini willl not reboot the apple changing to a circle with a line please help-

bpruse,  I may be completely off-track for your issue, but I had a similar situation where I wanted to downgrade a Mac Pro from Server to plain OS X and it would not boot from the OS X install disk.
I was attempting to use a full-install OS X.6.x disc with an earlier SL version than that which originally came installed on the Mac Pro.  After two or three hours of fiddling, I figured it out and used the discs that came with the system.
However, I don't know how that would work in your case if this is the mini server-version.  I'm sure the disks would only have Server on them.  Worse-case scenario, find out which X.6.x the OEM disc is installing and get an OS X disc with a new installer.

• PLEASE HELP! Guitar line in on Audigy 2 ZS not working

i have a sound blaster audigy 2 ZS platinum pro. In every program i try to use (FL 4, reason, krystal, ...) i can not even hear my guitar when plugged in to the sound card. I have tried the obvious, making sure i'm not in digital only mode, checking the cables. Some one please help.

Does Line-In work w/ normal line sources?
You propably need a pre-amp for guitar input through Line-In port but, if the port you're using is a Hi-Z port (you find this information from Audigy User's Guide) then, it should work even w/o additional pre-amp.

• Real Guitar-Line In-no sound-HELP!!

On GB 2 we were able to plug in the elec guitar into Line In, with audio cable coming from Headphone socket of powerbook going into Sony amp. But we were able to hear the guitar on the computer speakers and the amp with Monitor set to On. Now we have got GB3 and we don't seem to be able to do this.
Am I missing a trick here or have Apple removed this facility in the cause of Progress?
If so we need to revert to GB2. I have checked sound preferences which are now different in GB3 "Mic In/Out versus Audio In/Out)
Anyone help as this is driving us crazy!!
Cheers

I had some similar trouble with GB last night, but I did find a way around it. Awkward, but it will get you started. I have reported this bug to Apple.
If you do ANYTHING to the audio output settings in the preference panel, you lose your input from the line in. So what you need to to is set your prefs the way you want them, quit GB 3 and restart it. You should have your sound coming through loud and clear.
If you have no access to the prefs at all (another known problem caused by some kind of interplay between GB3 and other apps that use audio, e.g. iChat) then you have to restart the whole machine.
This is quite clearly a bug. The preferences in GB seem a bit messed up right now and a lot of people are having problems with them. I hope that Apple fix this pronto.

• Trouble recording a guitar line in.

Hey guys, I'll try to make this as short and detailed as possible. I plug my guitar into my computer using the Line In, using a ME-70 as a preamp, but the computer doesn't register any sound.
Let me try to explain how I'm setting it up:
-My guitar is connected to the 'guitar in' on my ME-70
-I use a 1/4" to 1/8" converter on the 'Rec Out' jack in the ME-70 to connect to the line in on my computer.
-I turn the preamp on my ME-70 on.
-Go to System Preferences/sound, use the input audio as Line in

I checked, made sure all the volumes were on, and everything was plugged in properly. however, no matter how hard I strum, or what I put the volumes at, there is no response in the input level. Every cable functions perfectly, and when I plug headphones into the Rec Out jack it sounds great. what can I be missing?
thanks for your help.

I am also having trouble getting my guitar to show up in Garageband. I have followed every tutorial I can find online (they all say the same things anyways). I set computer audio preferences and GB preferences to line-in, and experimented with mono 1, mono 2, and stereo 1/2 line in sources in GB. No love from any of them. No sound at all. My guitar has active pickups and all cables work elsewhere. The line-in does show a bit of input when unplugging the cable from the computer so the input isn't dead.
Any help would be awesome.

• Guitar Rig 2 - HELP PLEASE!!

Alright brothers, I know this is the Logic forum, I don't doubt that for an instant. But when a company with the reputation for quality such as native instruments drops the ball on offering the simplest bit of gratitude for purchasing their product - tech support - I decided to turn to my bros here in the Logic Forum . ..
I just got Guitar Rig 2 earlier today. I set it all up, installed the software, registered it, installed all the necessary drivers, installed the two update off the Native Instruments website, and still I have immense problems with this promising device.
In the standalone mode, GT 2 shows that it is receiving no audio input whatsoever from Rig Kontrol 2 (yes, I have the input gain turned up on RK2). . . however when I move the expression pedal and click the stomp boxes, everything works as it should. When i switch patches, I get the appropriate buzzes from overdrive boxes through my monitors.
When I switch to using it as a plugin in Logic, it receives input just fine, and Rig Kontrol does what its supposed to do. However, I do not get any output from my monitors. However, all other audio that is NOT related to Guitar Rig works fine. In order to get monitoring while using it as a plugin, i have to plug my headphones into the back of Rig Kontrol, or run the line outs from Rig Kontrol into my monitors directly.
While i am getting no input signal at all in the standalone version, I at least get some kind of buzz or hum indicating that if it DID get input, i would be able to hear the results through my monitors.
Also, in standalone mode, when I go to preferences, it doesn't allow me to select Rig Kontrol as the input device. . . nor does it offer the option. I am totally perplexed. . . and there's no one at Native Instruments. . . (no joke, that's what they said when I called about 30 times today)
If ANYONE knows how to make GT 2 fully funtional, please help! Thanks guys.

Having just installed GR2 on my MacBook Pro (17") I was apalled at the results I got. Stuttering audio and then completely packing in, unable to find it in Logic Pro as either a plug in or an instrument. I hopped along to the Native Instrument website and was very disappointed with the lack of drivers for the new Intel based Macs and poor support from NI.
It appears that this issue has been going on for many, many months. Most of the other applications I use (Reason, BFD) sorted the issues fairly quickly and I cannot believe that NI still have not come up with the goods. It is quite interesting that they are about to do a tour in America of GR2 on the Mac when all new Macs are now Intel based. My guess is that they have sorted the issue but in a diabolical show of contempt for their customers they have not made it available to us.
NI posted this on their web site "Nearly all NI products are fully compatible with the new Apple Mac X OS 10.4 operating system without the need to install any NI update. While upgrading to Mac OS 10.4, we recommend choosing the installation type "Upgrade Mac OS X"
This does not appear to be true and I believe NI have misinterpreted GR2. The update is stated to be ready by October 2006. I am not holding my breath!!

• Guitar line-in problems

So I bought an electric-acoustic guitar last weekend, and got it working in GB with help from a 6ft 1/4"-1/4" cable connected to a 1/4"-1/8" plug, all pluged into my line in port on my macbook. This was working great as a makeshift amp, providing distortion when set to the "metal" effect, as well as other effects. At least, until tonight.
In the middle of playing something, all of a sudden, the effect wasn't affecting my guitar sound anymore. It sounded like it was playing in the distance. I reset my computer, messed around with the settings, but nothing yet. Any ideas? I'm hoping I didnt blow something out somehow And while you're at it, my guitar sound (when it's actually working) turns off when my tuner is off. Any fixes for this?
Here are the settings I used to play my guitar through GB: Preferences --> Audio --> Audio input --> Built in input
Instrument --> Input Source --> Mono 1
Monitor --> On
These settings I got through a GB tutorial video so I don't think they're the problem, but who knows.

I would start with the guitar. You say the guitar shuts off when the tuner is off, the guitar should shut off when tuner is on. Can you plug the guitar into a amp to test. Also most guitars will stay on when a cord is plugged in draining the battery.
I would think you damaged any computer hardware the output from a E/A guitar with pre-amp is usually line level.

• Basic line chart help

I am relatively new Crystal reports 11 and am having problems creating a lsimple ine chart. I am trying to trend two types of network errors over time. The type of errors are in one field and the values are 1 or 2, I have two formulas, one converts a 1 to alarm and another to convert 2 to warn. I thought this would be simple but no mater what I've tried I end up with one chart that plots two lines that have the same values (instead of one for alarms and one for warns) or two charts that correctly plot the events over time. I need both events on one chart to compare them. There must be something fundamental I'm missing.
In the chart expert I have, on change of show @Alarm and @Warn. I've tried it with and without groups.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Tonus,
Try just creating 1 formula instead of 2.
Try this:
if {field.value}=1 then
"Alarm" else
"Warn"
Now use this formula in your chart expert.
I hope this helps,
Regards,
Zack H.

• Photo to line art, help needed

Hello - I'm struggling with a rather simple task: turning this image (http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/3641/limb1.jpg) into basic, b+w, vector line art. I'm not sure of the best approach. I've considered making a grid of squares and warping it to fit the shape, or using the pen to more or less trace the image...unfortunately, the image is poorly shot + lit so I can't use any automated trace tools. I'd love some help if someone knows a good approach!
Necessary info: os x 10.5, CS2.

I assume you have a high res version of the photo. Working in Photoshop, I would adjust levels to bring out the squares. Then use dodge and burn tools to further isolate them (you may have to paint in a couple). Then you can probably get a decent auto-trace. Of course, by then you could have traced it.
To trace it you could simply draw lines horizontally and vertically, in line with the squares, then convert them to a live paint object and fill in the intersecting squares.

• Cant get it to replace or print to new line, please help

2 problems. The instructions are to first replace each 's' with '$' and then print each word to a new line. Here is an example:
Give me a phrase: Viva Las Vegas, babies!
Viva
La$
Vega$,
babie$.
Here is my code that is not working:
import java.util.*;
public class StringEdit {
         private static Scanner input ;
         private static String makeMoney[] ;
         public static void main(String[] args)throws Exception {
              System.out.print ("Give me a phrase: ") ;
              input = new Scanner (System.in) ;
              makeMoney = input.nextLine().split(" ") ;
              //makeMoney = makeMoney.replace("s", "$") ;
              int i = 0;
              while (i < makeMoney.length) ;{
              if (makeMoney.contains("s")){
                   System.out.println("Show me here");
                   makeMoney[i].replace("s", "$");
              if (makeMoney[i].contains("S")){
                   System.out.println("Show 2");
                   makeMoney[i].replace("S", "$");
              System.out.print(makeMoney[i].toString());
              i++ ;
Please help me figure out what is wrong

your first post was the one which you really wanted to use for the assignment in order to get the output you desire. anyways like jverd said that you cannot update string because they are immutable. you can always do this
makeMoney[i] = makeMoney.replace(blah blah).
here is your program
import java.util.*;
public class StringEdit {
         private static Scanner input ;
         private static String makeMoney[] ;
         public static void main(String[] args)throws Exception {
              System.out.print ("Give me a phrase: ") ;
              input = new Scanner (System.in) ;
              makeMoney = input.nextLine().split(" ") ;
              //makeMoney = makeMoney.replace("s", "$") ;
              int i = 0;
              while (i < makeMoney.length) {
              if (makeMoney.contains("s")){
                   System.out.println("");
              makeMoney[i] =     makeMoney[i].replace("s", "$");
              if (makeMoney[i].contains("S")){
                   System.out.println("");
              makeMoney[i] =      makeMoney[i].replace("S", "$");
              System.out.print(makeMoney[i].toString());
              i++ ;
output
Give me a phrase: Viva Las Vegas
Viva
La$

• New/Additional phone line question- help please!

Hi
I am after some advice, and every time I call BT I get passed around as I am not 100% on what to ask for, or who I should speak to.
Basically, we have 2 phone lines coming into the house.  One line/number + broadband signal goes via a repeater to the office which is a separate building across the garden (approx 300m but I am not sure on the actual distance).  The signal is not great, for the broadband particularly - often drops out etc.  To solve this we would like a new physical line installed in the office building to give us a separate phone and broadband package to that of the main house, but ideally keeping the same number as we currently use in the office.  The office is used everyday for working from home and so is important to us.
Does that make sense?  I fully expect that an engineer will need to look at the site, and there will be a (significant) charge for the line to be installed (underground pipe work for cables already exists from house to office building and so this could be utilised).  Do I just place an order for a new line online, and wait for an engineer's visit?  Can I deal with changing the number at a later date if that is easier for the system to deal with?  Last time I rang BT, I was told I needed to speak to the exceptions team, when I was put through to them she told me all I needed to do was speak to customer services, customer services thought I was trying to move home and then didn't seem to understand what I needed (but it was probably how I was explaining it!).
I would be so grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, or give me tips on what to ask for.  My main worry is keeping the same phone number as it would be so much easier.
Thanks in advance

There are a number of possible solutions.  Here is, IMHO, the simplest:Create a line graph.  Under the Data tab, click Advanced.  In the "On Change Of" section, put Site.  In the Show Values, put each of your Period fields.If you don't want it broken down by site, simply change "On Change Of" to either "For Each Record" or "For All Records", depending on what you want.

• Missing image command line utility help

Hi all,
I can't seem to find the name of the utility (command line) that is very similar to ImageMagick. I know it's there because I used it before. It lets you manipulate images in various ways including resizing, changing the format, the colorspace tetc. I'm prety sure it'll even let you insert text on top of the image and save as xxx. I'm not a total geek ( I wish I was sometimes) so I'm not sure if it's a Darwin or BSD thing.
Please help.
Thank You,
