Guitar Pick in CD drive

This is kind of embarrassing, but I was holing my guitar pick in one hand and using the computer with the other. Without really realizing what I was doing, I stuck the pick in CD drive, and pulled it back out. Again, I wasn't consciously doing this, so I continued. After about the third time, it went too far in and I couldn't get it back out. Anyone know of any way to safely get it out without ruining the drive? I would rather deal with this myself, but If I must take it in, I guess I must.

When I drop a pick inside my acoustic guitar I can usually get it out by turning the sound hole down and shaking the guitar up and down until it passes through the strings. I don't think that procedure will work for the MacBook, though.
The problem is anything you stick in there to pry it out could push it in further. Maybe try some double-sided sticky tape on something thin like a popsicle stick? That might get the optical drive head dirty though... probably best to take it in to an expert.

    Hello,
I'm new to iPhoto and I've got a problem. I've got a scan of a guitar pick(.jpg) that is rectangular. I want to elimintate the white space around the actual pic so it is image is only the shape of the pick(rounded edge triangle).
How do I do this? I'm using iPhoto 6.

  • Picking a Hard Drive

The Hard drive in my Powerbook has recently died. Since it was out of warranty i have decided to change the hard drive my self and and having already replace my iMac G5 i decided to give it a try. Now i have managed to remove he old hard drive from the power book and now all I need is to know what kind of hard drive I should pick.

You basically need to choose speed and size. Speed you want 5400rpm (the norm) or the faster 7200rpm, which also costs more. Size, whatever you need up to 160GB (5400rpm) or 100GB (7200rpm).
OWC at http://www.macsales.com has a good selection, and does Newegg at http://www.newegg.com . You want a 2.5" notebook drive that supports the ATA or Parallel ATA connection. A serial ATA or SATA connection will not work in the Powerbook. At OWC's web site, they are pretty specific on the two different connections.

Why did the apple HID framework attach the device when it has no HID compliant controls?
Can I get the Apple HID controls to release the programmer or not to attach at all?

    Background:
This project would enable high visibility robotics and educational applications that permit interfacing robotics and telematics with high level programming. (RE: build your own robot to enter a contest or collect your socks). The programmer downloads machine code to little embedded computers (PIC chips) that you can then instruct it to perform neat things that may earn you sex appeal or peer acclaim in the correct circles.

    The Questions:
Has someone allready done this? For this device? Which device does it work on?
    I don't know.
Why did microchip call a chip programmer a HID device?
It is one of the easiest ways to implement a simple USB device. Whether it has buttons, wheels or indicators on it is irrelevant. It can be something other than a mouse or keyboard.
Why did the apple HID framework attach the device when it has no HID compliant controls?
The device presumably declares itself to be a HID class device. Therefore it gets the HID driver.
Can I get the Apple HID controls to release the programmer or not to attach at all?
(or) I have to write a kext/driver stack to match the vendor/product/model exactly to force the point?
Yes. You need a "codeless kext" to match vid/pid of the device. The basic idea is to make a "driver" with no executable, so the system's kernel HID driver doesn't match against the device. This gives your userland driver a chance.
See lists.apple.com and search the USB development list for more.
    hope this helps, Stuart

  • Hard Drive Repeatedly Unseats Itself

Hey everyone, I have a 20GB iPod 4G from December, 2004. Lately I've been having some problems with it that result in the folder icon appearing on the screen. I've tried restarting it and doing a software restore. Neither work, infact the software restore can't even be completed. Apparently the hard drive is coming unseated.
I brought the iPod in to a nearby Apple store, where they reseated the hard drive and temporarially fixed it. A few days later the hard drive came unseated again (the guys at the Genius Bar ask me if I run with it or have dropped it, I haven't) and they reseated it for me. Then it died again.
I tried opening it up myself with a guitar pick and checking all the connections. This got me about 10 minutes of music playback before it died again.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had a simmilar problem or has any ideas of things I could try. I only want to get about 5 more months out of it, and would really rather not make another trip to the Apple store.

First off, is it possible that your first language is not English (I don't mean that sacrastically)? I really don't feel like you're understanding my posts.
Try searching around the Discussions though.
The first thing I tried was searching the discussions. I couldn't find anything on an iPods drive coming unseated, so I started my own thread.
It must be a problem with the disk on the hard drive,
    it's having trouble reading it.
Like I said earlier, the hard drive is physically unseating itself, even under light use. It's not an issue with the actual drive platter ("disk").
Your best/safest option is to get a new MP3 player.
Once again, I really don't feel like you're understanding my situation. My iPod is physically intact and the hardware is functioning properly, but the hard drive keeps coming unseated.
Thanks for trying to help, but I don't feel like your responses have adequately addressed my problem. Does anyone else have any ideas? I may try opening it up and inspecting the interal connection again.

  • I recently deleted a partition on my mac that was intended to install windows. Now it is just blank space. I attempt to resize my Macintosh HD partition to cover entire hard drive space and hit apply but nothing happens (disk utility). Any ideas?

    I have a few problems...
I wanted to make a partition to install windows, I tried to use bootcamp 5 where it wanted to partition and install windows at the same time. I do not have a cd of windows but instead had it on a flash drive. Bootcamp couldn't find it. Instead I was reading forums and found that there was another way to install windows by partioning your harddrive using the disk utility, downloading the bootcamp drivers, and installing rEFIt (an app that when starting the compouter a menu would come up to boot windows from the flashdrive). I try that and the windows install screen gets me to the point where I pick a partition. I attempt to pick the partitioned drive but a message comes up telling me that "this is of the GPT partition style" and windows cannot be installed on the drive.
So now I went back to disk utility and deleted the partition but there is still blank space. I wanted to retry and install windows through bootcamp (somehow) but a message comes up that there cannot be any partitions or that a partition must be created using bootcamp. SO i keep trying to drag the partition over the blank space and hit apply but nothing happens.
By the way I was trying to install windows 8 pro, some forums would say that you cant install win8 however I found others that said you could. How do I fix my partition and how do I use bootcamp to install windows (preferrably 8)?

Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

  • Time Machine doesnt see my USB drive, connected to Airport extreme =(

    Hello,
I've been trying to figure this one out for almost 3 weeks now, but with no luck. I have a usb hard drive, connected to airport extreme. I've clicked on "setup time machine", select "choose disk", there is no disk to select. So I click on the "set up time capsule, it takes me to airport utility. I then click on the "disk" button and file sharing is enabled.
I can mount the disk through the finder, just fine and able to transfer files back and forth, however time machine cant seem to pick up the drive. Would love to be able to use time machine to do backups, So can someone please help?
osx 10.5.5 with airport utility 5.3.2
    Thanks in advance!

Well this has worked for me. I have a Freecom 500Gb usb hard Drive connected through an unpowered 4-way USBhub to an Airport Extreme Base station. After mounting the Air Disk hard drive on my powerbook, I then dragged the disk to my user folder, thereby creating an alias. I have put that alias in my login items and now TimeMachine works beautifully. I've repeated it on a Mac Mini (also using OSX 10.5.5) and that seems to be fine too. Admittedly the back-ups take a long time over airport, but fine via Ethernet.
Good luck everyone who struggles with this.

  • How to restore session from external hard drive as time machine?

Hi - I'm trying to restore my apps and data from my time machine onto a new hard drive, which was just replaced by Apple.  I'm using a WD elements hard drive as a time machine and the new hard drive only sees it as an external hard drive - it asks whether I want to use it as a time machine, so if I select this will it keep all my old back ups from the previous hard drive?
When I went through the set up assistant it didn't pick up the external hard drive - it is definitely plugged in, on and on the same network!  I'm now trying migration assistant which closes down all apps, and so it can't pick up the drive either - any ideas?
    Thank you!

You need to boot to the recovery HD and then select Restore from a Time Machine backup.
You can't do that when you are bootiing to the real OS. It has to be done from the recovery hd.

  • My WD 2TB External Drive can't be formatted.

    Hi there,
Something really mysterious happened last night and it has completely stumped me.
I have a WD 2TB External Drive that I use with my iMac and Macbook Pro, it's formatted FAT so that I can use it on Windows aswell. This setup has worked well until last night. I plugged the external into a Win PC and it didn't want to pick up. It showed the drive letter and drive but not the usual name. It gave it the generic windows name and when I clicked on the icon nothing happens. When I ran disk management on Win it shows the drive is healthy but that it has 2TB free space which is obviously not true since it had 1TB free space.
I decided to safely remove it and plugged it into my macbook pro. It then also didn't pick up and only showed up in Disk Utility with the partion grey'd out. I tried for a couple of hours to verify the disk and repair the disk in Disk Utility and it would run and complete both but then when I tried to mount it in Disk Utlity it would say it can't.
I then thought the drive is fried so I downloaded Drive Drill to see if I could access the content on it to restore my lost data. I ran it and it picked up the drive and restored 100% of my lost information. I then tried to format the drive but everytime I delete the partition and format it it gets stuck on a certain position and won't do anything for hours.
I know the drive works fine because initially I left it and it eventually formatted the drive and it picked up on the dock. I then tried to copy information over to it and after 100GB it got stuck and wouldn't do a thing. I then decided to format again because I suspected some files that were corrupt might have been transferred over again when restoring the data on it.
Now my problem is that it shows up in Disk Utility and I can run verify and recovery but as soon as I want to format it doesn't work and it stays stuck at the point of formatting the drive.
I have already tried the following:
    - A different USB plug
    - Formatting in Windows
    - Different Formats (ex-FAT, NTFS etc)
    - Completely removing the partition and creating a new one
Here are screen shots of what it says when I verify and recover the drive:

    Thanks for the feedback Linc,
I have tried to repartition it and I also tried to delete and format, all of it takes time and finishes the process but then when I tried to mount it says it can't mount the drive and neither does it pick up on Windows. Very confused!

  • How do you boot from an external drive when internal drive is dead?

The internal drive is dead, but I have a complete dupolicate on my fire-wire external drive. I think I remember reading that there is a combination of keys to press down when starting to allow one to choose which drive to use as a startup volume. As it is, the thing won't start up at all.
So I know it's supposed to run from the external drive, but how do you get it to boot from it without having designated it as the startup when it was last running?

Hold down the Option key when booting the computer.
When I asked the question I was working on my daughter's ibook.
Now I'm back home and I have a firewall external drive, so I tried pressing option when I started and icons for startup drive come up BUT there is only one icon -- that being for my internal drive. I know that the external drive, which has a duplicate of the internal, is capable of starting it up ok, because when I go ahead and , after starting it up on the internal drive, then pick the external drive to start and then restart it, it goes to the external drive ok. But again, if it has been preferrenced to start on the internal drive and I do the thing by pressing with option when I start, it doesn't give me the option to use the external drive. (The external drive is partioned, and the duplicate startup is in one of the volumes, but I don't think this should have anything to do with anything, since it can start up using the appropriate external hard drive volume when I have selected it in my preferences.)

  • Backup an external hard drive connected to Airport -- is this possible?

Currently I have a hub connected to my airport extreme. There are 2 external hard drives connected to the hub. One has my iTunes library on it, and the other is being used for time machine backups.
I have no problem doing the backup wirelessly to the one hard drive. In time machine, I could pick either external drive to back up to. What I am trying to do is back up the external drive too. Time machine is only seeing the hard drive on my laptop. The exclude list is blank and when I try to add the itunes HD to the exclude list (to remove it), it won't let me select it-- it is greyed out.
If I connect the itunes HD directly into my laptop, I can run the backup, but that is not very convenient. Is what I am trying to do possible? Does anyone have any ideas? Are there any other posts discussing this (I could not find any with my specific problem).
    Thanks!

That's correct. Time Machine will not back up a network drive (see #2 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum).
You're going to need a different app. Which one will depend on where you want the backups to go; some apps will not back-up from a network drive; others won't back up to a network drive. I don't know, offhand, of any that will do both. Perhaps Kappy, V.K., or others will.
For backups to a local disk, try either CarbonCopyCloner (which I use to make a full bootable "clone" in addition to Time Machine), and I think SuperDuper will do this as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while, then send them some $$ so they can keep it current. It can be scheduled to run automatically, and you have the choice of it keeping only current copies or to archive prior versions as well. SuperDuper has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do scheduling. I don't know if it will keep archive copies.
There are many other backup apps, some of which will handle network drives. Check Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.
